Cutwidth Versus BFS-Width with Applications to Graph Reconstruction from Distance Queries

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 370, 20th Scandinavian Symposium on Algorithm Theory (SWAT 2026)

Abstract
Eppstein, Goodrich, and Liu [ESA 2025] introduced a new graph parameter, called BFS-width, and gave polylogarithmic bounds on it for bounded bandwidth graphs. Their bounds naturally imply several applications, e.g. in graph reconstruction via shortest path distance queries, graph drawing, and matrix reordering. We study this parameter for a broader class of graphs, namely bounded cutwidth graphs. We prove a sublinear upper bound on the BFS-width of bounded cutwidth graphs and show that our bounds are asymptotically tight. Our upper bound implies the first deterministic algorithm for reconstructing a bounded cutwidth graph with a subquadratic number of shortest path distance queries.

Accelerating GPGPU Simulation by Strategically Parallelizing the Compute Bottleneck

Authors: Jakob Sachs, Tim Lühnen, and Sohan Lal

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 141, 17th Workshop on Parallel Programming and Run-Time Management Techniques for Many-Core Architectures and 15th Workshop on Design Tools and Architectures for Multicore Embedded Computing Platforms (PARMA-DITAM 2026)

Abstract
Cycle-accurate GPGPU simulators like GPGPU-Sim provide invaluable insights for hardware architecture research but suffer from extremely long runtimes, hindering research productivity. This paper addresses this critical bottleneck by proposing a strategy to accelerate GPGPU-Sim. We first perform a holistic profiling analysis across diverse GPGPU benchmarks to identify the primary performance bottleneck, pinpointing the SIMT-Core cluster execution within the CORE-clock cycle. Based on this, we implement a parallelization scheme that strategically targets this hotspot, utilizing a thread pool to manage concurrent execution of SIMT-Core clusters. Our approach prioritizes minimal modifications to the existing GPGPU-Sim codebase to ensure long-term maintainability. Evaluation of a simulated NVIDIA H100 model demonstrates an average simulation wall-time speedup of 3.58× with 8 worker threads, and a maximum up to 4.38×, while incurring a maximum cycle count error of 3.22%, with some other benchmarks exhibiting no error at all.

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 139, 1st New Ideas in Networked Systems (NINeS 2026)

Abstract
Real-time video streaming relies on rate control to match video bitrate to network capacity while keeping latency low. Existing deployed video rate controllers react slowly to network changes, causing under-utilization and latency spikes. In contrast, modern delay-sensitive congestion control algorithms (CCAs) adapt on round-trip-time timescales, maintaining a tight feedback loop that achieves both high utilization and low latency. We introduce Vidaptive, a lightweight framework that enables real-time video to leverage responsive CCAs without codec changes. Vidaptive decouples encoding from transmission: it paces video frames at the CCA’s rate and injects dummy packets when the encoder output is insufficient, preserving a continuous feedback loop. An online algorithm dynamically adjusts the encoder’s target bitrate to align with CCA capacity while bounding frame latency. Implemented in Google WebRTC, Vidaptive improves both video quality and tail latency on diverse cellular traces. Compared to GCC, it delivers 1.5× higher bitrate, +40% VMAF, +1.4 dB SSIM, +1.3 dB PSNR, and reduces 95th-percentile frame latency by 57% (2.2 seconds). Against Salsify, it achieves lower tail latency without invasive codec modifications. These results show that coupling existing CCAs with a thin adaptation layer can outperform specialized video rate controllers while remaining deployable in practice.

Simulate Before Sending: Rethinking Transport in Datacenter Networks

Authors: Dan Straussman, Isaac Keslassy, Alexander Shpiner, and Liran Liss

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 139, 1st New Ideas in Networked Systems (NINeS 2026)

Abstract
Existing transport protocols in commodity datacenter networks struggle to provide low collective completion times (CCTs) to AI training collectives, as packet losses and retransmissions significantly degrade performance. We propose dcSim, an efficient transport that achieves low CCTs and practically lossless performance with commodity switches. In dcSim, each packet first employs a small simulation probe to traverse the network and explore congestion along a candidate path. Only packets whose simulation probes succeed are then transmitted, expecting to succeed as well. Evaluations confirm that dcSim achieves faster CCTs than existing schemes, with small queues and virtually zero packet loss. Finally, dcSim also excels in adverse conditions, including oversubscribed topologies.

Graph Coloring Below Guarantees via Co-Triangle Packing

Authors: Shyan Akmal and Tomohiro Koana

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 359, 36th International Symposium on Algorithms and Computation (ISAAC 2025)

Abstract
In the 𝓁-Coloring problem, we are given a graph on n nodes, and tasked with determining if its vertices can be properly colored using 𝓁 colors. In this paper we study below-guarantee graph coloring, which tests whether an n-vertex graph can be properly colored using g-k colors, where g is a trivial upper bound such as n. We introduce an algorithmic framework that builds on a packing of co-triangles K₃ (independent sets of three vertices): the algorithm greedily finds co-triangles and employs a win-win analysis. If many are found, we immediately return yes; otherwise these co-triangles form a small co-triangle modulator, whose deletion makes the graph co-triangle-free. Extending the work of [Gutin et al., SIDMA 2021], who solved 𝓁-Coloring (for any 𝓁) in randomized O^∗(2^k) time when given a K₂-free modulator of size k, we show that this problem can likewise be solved in randomized O^*(2^{k}) time when given a K₃-free modulator of size k. This result in turn yields a randomized O^*(2^{3k/2}) algorithm for (n-k)-Coloring (also known as Dual Coloring), improving the previous O^*(4^k) bound. We then introduce a smaller parameterization, (ω+μ-k)-Coloring, where ω is the clique number and μ is the size of a maximum matching in the complement graph; since ω+μ ≤ n for any graph, this problem is strictly harder. Using the same co-triangle-packing argument, we obtain a randomized O^*(2^{6k}) algorithm, establishing its fixed-parameter tractability for a smaller parameter. Complementing this finding, we show that no fixed-parameter tractable algorithm exists for (ω-k)-Coloring or (μ-k)-Coloring under standard complexity assumptions.

Unsupervised Multimodal Learning for Fault Diagnosis and Prognosis - Application to Radiotherapy Systems (PhD Panel)

Authors: Kélian Poujade, Louise Travé-Massuyès, Jérémy Pirard, and Laure Vieillevigne

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 136, 36th International Conference on Principles of Diagnosis and Resilient Systems (DX 2025)

Abstract
Modern complex systems, such as radiotherapy machines, require robust strategies for fault detection, diagnosis, and prognosis to ensure operational continuity and patient safety. While data-driven methods have gained traction, few studies address diagnostic and prognostic tasks using multimodal operational data under unsupervised or semi-supervised learning settings. This gap is particularly critical given the scarcity of labeled failure data in real-world environments. This work aims to design a unified approach for fault detection, diagnosis, and prognosis using multimodal data in the absence of complete labeling. To this end, autoencoders (AEs) are employed due to their suitability for unsupervised and self-supervised learning, flexibility in handling heterogeneous data, and ability to construct latent representations optimized for various downstream tasks. A specific implementation based on a Long Short-Term Memory β-Variational Autoencoder (LSTM-β-VAE) was developed to detect anomalies in machine logs. This framework is applied to TomoTherapy® systems - a highly complex and under-explored use case within the radiotherapy domain. Initial results demonstrate strong anomaly detection performance on both a public benchmark dataset (HDFS) and a proprietary dataset derived from real-world TomoTherapy® machine faults. Beyond methodology, the paper includes a concise literature review of multimodal learning and data-driven diagnosis and prognosis with a focus on AEs. Based on this review, key research directions are identified for the continuation of the thesis, especially the integration of explainable AI as a means to enhance diagnosis capabilities in the absence of labeled faults.

Graph Modification of Bounded Size to Minor-Closed Classes as Fast as Vertex Deletion

Authors: Laure Morelle, Ignasi Sau, and Dimitrios M. Thilikos

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 351, 33rd Annual European Symposium on Algorithms (ESA 2025)

Abstract
A replacement action is a function ℒ that maps each graph H to a collection of graphs of size at most |V(H)|. Given a graph class ℋ, we consider a general family of graph modification problems, called ℒ-Replacement to ℋ, where the input is a graph G and the question is whether it is possible to replace some induced subgraph H₁ of G on at most k vertices by a graph H₂ in ℒ(H₁) so that the resulting graph belongs to ℋ. ℒ-Replacement to ℋ can simulate many graph modification problems including vertex deletion, edge deletion/addition/edition/contraction, vertex identification, subgraph complementation, independent set deletion, (induced) matching deletion/contraction, etc. We present two algorithms. The first one solves ℒ-Replacement to ℋ in time 2^poly(k) ⋅ |V(G)|² for every minor-closed graph class ℋ, where poly is a polynomial whose degree depends on ℋ, under a mild technical condition on ℒ. This generalizes the results of Morelle, Sau, Stamoulis, and Thilikos [ICALP 2020, ICALP 2023] for the particular case of Vertex Deletion to ℋ within the same running time. Our second algorithm is an improvement of the first one when ℋ is the class of graphs embeddable in a surface of Euler genus at most g and runs in time 2^𝒪(k⁹) ⋅ |V(G)|², where the 𝒪(⋅) notation depends on g. To the best of our knowledge, these are the first parameterized algorithms with a reasonable parametric dependence for such a general family of graph modification problems to minor-closed classes.

Incremental Maximization for a Broad Class of Objectives

Authors: Yann Disser and David Weckbecker

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 351, 33rd Annual European Symposium on Algorithms (ESA 2025)

Abstract
We consider incremental maximization problems, where the solution has to be built up gradually by adding elements one after the other. In every step, the incremental solution must be competitive, compared against the optimum solution of the current cardinality. We prove that a competitive solution always exists when the objective function is monotone and β-accountable, by providing a scaling algorithm that guarantees a constant competitive ratio. This generalizes known results and, importantly, yields the first competitive algorithm for the natural class of monotone and subadditive objective functions.

Canonical for Automated Theorem Proving in Lean

Authors: Chase Norman and Jeremy Avigad

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 352, 16th International Conference on Interactive Theorem Proving (ITP 2025)

Abstract
Canonical is a solver for type inhabitation in dependent type theory, that is, the problem of producing a term of a given type. We present a Lean tactic which invokes Canonical to generate proof terms and synthesize programs. The tactic supports higher-order and dependently-typed goals, structural recursion over indexed inductive types, and definitional equality. Canonical finds proofs for 84% of Natural Number Game problems in 51 seconds total.

Graph Reconstruction via MIS Queries

Authors: Christian Konrad, Conor O'Sullivan, and Victor Traistaru

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 325, 16th Innovations in Theoretical Computer Science Conference (ITCS 2025)

Abstract
In the Graph Reconstruction (GR) problem, a player initially only knows the vertex set V of an input graph G = (V, E) and is required to learn its set of edges E. To this end, the player submits queries to an oracle and must deduce E from the oracle’s answers. Angluin and Chen [Journal of Computer and System Sciences, 2008] resolved the number of Independent Set (IS) queries necessary and sufficient for GR on m-edge graphs. In this setting, each query consists of a subset of vertices U ⊆ V, and the oracle responds with a boolean, indicating whether U is an independent set in G. They gave algorithms that use O(m ⋅ log n) IS queries, which is best possible. In this paper, we initiate the study of GR via Maximal Independent Set (MIS) queries, a more powerful variant of IS queries. Given a query U ⊆ V, the oracle responds with any, potentially adversarially chosen, maximal independent set I ⊆ U in the induced subgraph G[U]. We show that, for GR, MIS queries are strictly more powerful than IS queries when parametrized by the maximum degree Δ of the input graph. We give tight (up to poly-logarithmic factors) upper and lower bounds for this problem: 1) We observe that the simple strategy of taking uniform independent random samples of V and submitting those to the oracle yields a non-adaptive randomized algorithm that executes O(Δ² ⋅ log n) queries and succeeds with high probability. This should be contrasted with the fact that Ω(Δ ⋅ n ⋅ log(n/Δ)) IS queries are required for such graphs, which shows that MIS queries are strictly more powerful than IS queries. Interestingly, combining the strategy of taking uniform random samples of V with the probabilistic method, we show the existence of a deterministic non-adaptive algorithm that executes O(Δ³ ⋅ log(n/Δ)) queries. 2) Regarding lower bounds, we prove that the additional Δ factor when going from randomized non-adaptive algorithms to deterministic non-adaptive algorithms is necessary. We show that every non-adaptive deterministic algorithm requires Ω(Δ³ / log² Δ) queries. For arbitrary randomized adaptive algorithms, we show that Ω(Δ²) queries are necessary in graphs of maximum degree Δ, and that Ω(log n) queries are necessary, even when the input graph is an n-vertex cycle.

Abstract
We study the partial search order problem (PSOP) proposed recently by Scheffler [WG 2022]. Given a graph G together with a partial order on the set of vertices of G, this problem determines if there is an 𝒮-ordering that is consistent with the given partial order, where 𝒮 is a graph search paradigm like BFS, DFS, etc. This problem naturally generalizes the end-vertex problem which has received much attention over the past few years. It also generalizes the so-called ℱ-tree recognition problem which has just been studied in the literature recently. Our main contribution is a polynomial-time dynamic programming algorithm for the PSOP of the maximum cardinality search (MCS) restricted to chordal graphs. This resolves one of the most intriguing open questions left in the work of Scheffler [WG 2022]. To obtain our result, we propose the notion of layer structure and study numerous related structural properties which might be of independent interest.
