Factorised Representations of Join Queries: Tight Bounds and a New Dichotomy

Authors: Christoph Berkholz and Harry Vinall-Smeeth

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 365, 29th International Conference on Database Theory (ICDT 2026)

Abstract
A common theme in factorised databases and knowledge compilation is the representation of solution sets in a useful yet succinct data structure. In this paper, we study the representation of the result of join queries (or, equivalently, the set of homomorphisms between two relational structures). We focus on the very general format of {∪,×}-circuits - also known as d-representations or DNNF circuits - and aim to find the limits of this approach. In prior work, it has been shown that there always exists a {∪,×}-circuit of size N^O(subw) representing the query result, where N is the size of the database and subw the submodular width of the query. If the arity of all relations is bounded by a constant, then subw is linear in the treewidth tw of the query. In this setting, the authors of this paper proved a lower bound of N^Ω(tw^ε) on the circuit size (ICALP 2023), where ε > 0 depends on the excluded grid theorem. Our first main contribution is to improve this lower bound to N^Ω(tw), which is tight up to a constant factor in the exponent. Our second contribution is a N^Ω(subw^{1/4}) lower bound on the circuit size for join queries over relations of unbounded arity. Both lower bounds are unconditional lower bounds on the circuit size for well-chosen database instances. Their proofs use a combination of structural (hyper)graph theory with communication complexity in a simple yet novel way. While the second lower bound is asymptotically equivalent to Marx’s conditional bound on the decision complexity (JACM 2013), our N^Θ(tw) bound in the bounded arity setting is tight, while the best conditional bound on the decision complexity is N^Ω(tw/log tw). Note that removing this logarithmic factor in the decision setting is a major open problem.

Modular Counting over 3-Element and Conservative Domains

Authors: Andrei A. Bulatov and Amirhossein Kazeminia

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 364, 43rd International Symposium on Theoretical Aspects of Computer Science (STACS 2026)

Abstract
In the Constraint Satisfaction Problem (CSP for short) the goal is to decide the existence of a homomorphism from a given relational structure {G} to a given relational structure {H}. If the structure {H} is fixed and {G} is the only input, the problem is denoted CSP({H}). In its counting version, #CSP({H}), the task is to find the number of such homomorphisms. The CSP and #CSP have been used to model a wide variety of combinatorial problems and have received a tremendous amount of attention from researchers from multiple disciplines. In this paper we consider the modular version of the counting CSPs, that is, problems of the form #_pCSP({H}) of counting the number of homomorphisms to {H} modulo a fixed prime number p. Modular counting has been intensively studied during the last decade, although mainly in the case of graph homomorphisms. Here we continue the program of systematic research of modular counting of homomorphisms to general relational structures. The main results of the paper include a new way of reducing modular counting problems to smaller domains and a study of the complexity of such problems over 3-element domains and over conservative domains, that is, relational structures that allow to express (in a certain exact way) every possible unary predicate.

On the Constant-Factor Approximability of Minimum Cost Constraint Satisfaction Problems

Authors: Ian DeHaan, Neng Huang, and Euiwoong Lee

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 353, Approximation, Randomization, and Combinatorial Optimization. Algorithms and Techniques (APPROX/RANDOM 2025)

Abstract
We study minimum cost constraint satisfaction problems (MinCostCSP) through the algebraic lens. We show that for any constraint language Γ which has the dual discriminator operation as a polymorphism, there exists a |D|-approximation algorithm for MinCostCSP(Γ) where D is the domain. Complementing our algorithmic result, we show that any constraint language Γ where MinCostCSP(Γ) admits a constant-factor approximation must have a near-unanimity (NU) polymorphism unless P = NP, extending a similar result by Dalmau et al. on MinCSPs. These results imply a dichotomy of constant-factor approximability for constraint languages that contain all permutation relations (a natural generalization for Boolean CSPs that allow variable negation): either MinCostCSP(Γ) has an NU polymorphism and is |D|-approximable, or it does not have any NU polymorphism and is NP-hard to approximate within any constant factor. Finally, we present a constraint language which has a majority polymorphism, but is nonetheless NP-hard to approximate within any constant factor assuming the Unique Games Conjecture, showing that the condition of having an NU polymorphism is in general not sufficient unless UGC fails.

Quantum SAT Problems with Finite Sets of Projectors Are Complete for a Plethora of Classes

Authors: Ricardo Rivera Cardoso, Alex Meiburg, and Daniel Nagaj

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 350, 20th Conference on the Theory of Quantum Computation, Communication and Cryptography (TQC 2025)

Abstract
Previously, all known variants of the Quantum Satisfiability (QSAT) problem - consisting of determining whether a k-local (k-body) Hamiltonian is frustration-free - could be classified as being either in 𝖯; or complete for NP, MA, or QMA₁. Here, we present new qubit variants of this problem that are complete for BQP₁, coRP, QCMA, PI(coRP,NP), PI(BQP₁,NP), PI(BQP₁,MA), SoPU(coRP,NP), SoPU(BQP₁,NP), and SoPU(BQP₁,MA). Our result implies that a complete classification of quantum constraint satisfaction problems (QCSPs), analogous to Schaefer’s dichotomy theorem for classical CSPs, must either include these 13 classes, or otherwise show that some are equal. Additionally, our result showcases two new types of QSAT problems that can be decided efficiently, as well as the first nontrivial BQP₁-complete problem. We first construct QSAT problems on qudits that are complete for BQP₁, coRP, and QCMA. These are made by restricting the finite set of Hamiltonians to consist of elements similar to H_{init}, H_{prop}, and H_{out}, seen in the circuit-to-Hamiltonian transformation. Usually, these are used to demonstrate hardness of QSAT and Local Hamiltonian problems, and so our proofs of hardness are simple. The difficulty lies in ensuring that all Hamiltonians generated with these three elements can be decided in their respective classes. For this, we build our Hamiltonian terms with high-dimensional data and clock qudits, ternary logic, and either monogamy of entanglement or specific clock encodings. We then show how to express these problems in terms of qubits, by proving that any QCSP can be reduced to a qubit problem while maintaining the same complexity - something not believed possible classically. The remaining six problems are obtained by considering "sums" and "products" of some of the QSAT problems mentioned here. Before this work, the QSAT problems generated in this way resulted in complete problems for PI and SoPU classes that were trivially equal to NP, MA, or QMA₁. We thus commence the study of these new and seemingly nontrivial classes. While [Meiburg, 2021] first sought to prove completeness for coRP, BQP₁, and QCMA, we note that those constructions are flawed. Here, we rework them, provide correct proofs, and obtain improvements on the required qudit dimensionality.

Three Fundamental Questions in Modern Infinite-Domain Constraint Satisfaction

Authors: Michael Pinsker, Jakub Rydval, Moritz Schöbi, and Christoph Spiess

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 345, 50th International Symposium on Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science (MFCS 2025)

Abstract
The Feder-Vardi dichotomy conjecture for Constraint Satisfaction Problems (CSPs) with finite templates, confirmed independently by Bulatov and Zhuk, has an extension to certain well-behaved infinite templates due to Bodirsky and Pinsker which remains wide open. We provide answers to three fundamental questions on the scope of the Bodirsky-Pinsker conjecture. Our first two main results provide two simplifications of this scope, one of structural, and the other one of algebraic nature. The former simplification implies that the conjecture is equivalent to its restriction to templates without algebraicity, a crucial assumption in the most powerful classification methods. The latter yields that the higher-arity invariants of any template within its scope can be assumed to be essentially injective, and any algebraic condition characterizing any complexity class within the conjecture closed under Datalog reductions must be satisfiable by injections, thus lifting the mystery of the better applicability of certain conditions over others. Our third main result uses the first one to show that any non-trivially tractable template within the scope serves, up to a Datalog-computable modification of it, as the witness of the tractability of a non-finitely tractable finite-domain Promise Constraint Satisfaction Problem (PCSP) by the so-called sandwich method. This generalizes a recent result of Mottet and provides a strong hitherto unknown connection between the Bodirsky-Pinsker conjecture and finite-domain PCSPs.

Subcoloring of (Unit) Disk Graphs

Authors: Malory Marin and Rémi Watrigant

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 345, 50th International Symposium on Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science (MFCS 2025)

Abstract
A subcoloring of a graph is a partition of its vertex set into subsets (called colors), each inducing a disjoint union of cliques. It is a natural generalization of the classical proper coloring, in which each color must instead induce an independent set. Similarly to proper coloring, we define the subchromatic number of a graph as the minimum integer k such that it admits a subcoloring with k colors, and the corresponding problem k-Subcoloring which asks whether a graph has subchromatic number at most k. In this paper, we initiate the study of the subcoloring of (unit) disk graphs. One motivation stems from the fact that disk graphs can be seen as a dense generalization of planar graphs where, intuitively, each vertex can be blown into a large clique-much like subcoloring generalizes proper coloring. Interestingly, it can be observed that every unit disk graph admits a subcoloring with at most 7 colors. We first prove that the subchromatic number can be 3-approximated in polynomial-time in unit disk graphs. We then present several hardness results for special cases of unit disk graphs which somehow prevents the use of classical approaches for improving this result. We show in particular that 2-Subcoloring remains NP-hard in triangle-free unit disk graphs, as well as in unit disk graphs representable within a strip of bounded height. We also solve an open question of Broersma, Fomin, Nešetřil, and Woeginger (2002) by proving that 3-Subcoloring remains NP-hard in co-comparability graphs (which contain unit disk graphs representable within a strip of height √3/2). Finally, we prove that every n-vertex disk graph admits a subcoloring with at most O(log³(n)) colors and present a O(log²(n))-approximation algorithm for computing the subchromatic number of such graphs. This is achieved by defining a decomposition and a special type of co-comparability disk graph, called Δ-disk graphs, which might be of independent interest.

Temporal Valued Constraint Satisfaction Problems

Authors: Manuel Bodirsky, Édouard Bonnet, and Žaneta Semanišinová

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 345, 50th International Symposium on Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science (MFCS 2025)

Abstract
We study the computational complexity of the valued constraint satisfaction problem (VCSP) for every valued structure over ℚ that is preserved by all order-preserving bijections. Such VCSPs will be called temporal, in analogy to the (classical) constraint satisfaction problem: a relational structure is preserved by all order-preserving bijections if and only if all its relations have a first-order definition in (ℚ; <), and the CSPs for such structures are called temporal CSPs. Many optimization problems that have been studied intensively in the literature can be phrased as a temporal VCSP. We prove that a temporal VCSP is in P, or NP-complete. Our analysis uses the concept of fractional polymorphisms. This is the first dichotomy result for VCSPs over infinite domains which is complete in the sense that it treats all valued structures that contain a given automorphism group.

The Role of Regularity in (Hyper-)Clique Detection and Implications for Optimizing Boolean CSPs

Authors: Nick Fischer, Marvin Künnemann, Mirza Redžić, and Julian Stieß

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 334, 52nd International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2025)

Abstract
Is detecting a k-clique in k-partite regular (hyper-)graphs as hard as in the general case? Intuition suggests yes, but proving this - especially for hypergraphs - poses notable challenges. Concretely, we consider a strong notion of regularity in h-uniform hypergraphs, where we essentially require that any subset of at most h-1 is incident to a uniform number of hyperedges. Such notions are studied intensively in the combinatorial block design literature. We show that any f(k)n^{g(k)}-time algorithm for detecting k-cliques in such graphs transfers to an f'(k)n^{g(k)}-time algorithm for the general case, establishing a fine-grained equivalence between the h-uniform hyperclique hypothesis and its natural regular analogue. Equipped with this regularization result, we then fully resolve the fine-grained complexity of optimizing Boolean constraint satisfaction problems over assignments with k non-zeros. Our characterization depends on the maximum degree d of a constraint function. Specifically, if d ≤ 1, we obtain a linear-time solvable problem, if d = 2, the time complexity is essentially equivalent to k-clique detection, and if d ≥ 3 the problem requires exhaustive-search time under the 3-uniform hyperclique hypothesis. To obtain our hardness results, the regularization result plays a crucial role, enabling a very convenient approach when applied carefully. We believe that our regularization result will find further applications in the future.

Limitations of Affine Integer Relaxations for Solving Constraint Satisfaction Problems

Authors: Moritz Lichter and Benedikt Pago

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 334, 52nd International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2025)

Abstract
We show that various recent algorithms for finite-domain constraint satisfaction problems (CSP), which are based on solving their affine integer relaxations, do not solve all tractable and not even all Maltsev CSPs. This rules them out as candidates for a universal polynomial-time CSP algorithm. The algorithms are ℤ-affine k-consistency, BLP+AIP, BA^{k}, and CLAP. We thereby answer a question by Brakensiek, Guruswami, Wrochna, and Živný [Joshua Brakensiek et al., 2020] whether a constant level of BA^{k}solves all tractable CSPs in the negative: Indeed, not even a sublinear level k suffices. We also refute a conjecture by Dalmau and Opršal [Víctor Dalmau and Jakub Opršal, 2024] (LICS 2024) that every CSP is either solved by ℤ-affine k-consistency or admits a Datalog reduction from 3-colorability. For the cohomological k-consistency algorithm, that is also based on affine relaxations, we show that it correctly solves our counterexample but fails on an NP-complete template.

Nonuniform Deterministic Finite Automata over Finite Algebraic Structures

Abstract
Nonuniform deterministic finite automata (NUDFA) over monoids were invented by Barrington in [Barrington, 1985] to study boundaries of nonuniform constant-memory computation. Later, results on these automata helped to identify interesting classes of groups for which equation satisfiability problem (PolSat) is solvable in (probabilistic) polynomial time [Mikael Goldmann and Alexander Russell, 2002; Idziak et al., 2022]. Based on these results, we present a full characterization of groups, for which the identity checking problem (called PolEqv) has a probabilistic polynomial-time algorithm. We also go beyond groups, and propose how to generalise the notion of NUDFA to arbitrary finite algebraic structures. We study satisfiability of these automata in this more general setting. As a consequence, we present a full description of finite algebras from congruence modular varieties for which testing circuit equivalence CEqv can be solved by a probabilistic polynomial-time procedure. In our proofs we use two computational complexity assumptions: randomized Expotential Time Hypothesis and Constant Degree Hypothesis.

Restricted CSPs and F-Free Digraph Algorithmics

Authors: Santiago Guzmán-Pro and Barnaby Martin

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 334, 52nd International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2025)

Abstract
In recent years, much attention has been placed on the complexity of graph homomorphism problems when the input is restricted to ℙ_k-free and ℙ_k-subgraph-free graphs. We consider the directed version of this research line, by addressing the question is it true that digraph homomorphism problems CSP(H) have a P versus NP-complete dichotomy when the input is restricted to ℙ→_k-free (resp. ℙ→_k-subgraph-free) digraphs? Our main contribution in this direction shows that if CSP(H) is NP-complete, then there is a positive integer N such that CSP(H) remains NP-hard even for ℙ→_N-subgraph-free digraphs. Moreover, CSP(H) becomes polynomial-time solvable for ℙ→_{N-1}-subgraph-free acyclic digraphs. We then verify the questions above for digraphs on three vertices and a family of smooth tournaments. We prove these results by establishing a connection between F-(subgraph)-free algorithmics and constraint satisfaction theory. On the way, we introduce restricted CSPs, i.e., problems of the form CSP(H) restricted to yes-instances of CSP(H') - these were called restricted homomorphism problems by Hell and Nešetřil. Another main result of this paper presents a P versus NP-complete dichotomy for these problems. Moreover, this complexity dichotomy is accompanied by an algebraic dichotomy in the spirit of the finite domain CSP dichotomy.

On the Degree Automatability of Sum-Of-Squares Proofs

Authors: Alex Bortolotti, Monaldo Mastrolilli, and Luis Felipe Vargas

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 334, 52nd International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2025)

Abstract
The Sum-of-Squares (SoS) hierarchy, also known as Lasserre hierarchy, has emerged as a promising tool in optimization. However, it remains unclear whether fixed-degree SoS proofs can be automated [O'Donnell (2017)]. Indeed, there are examples of polynomial systems with bounded coefficients that admit low-degree SoS proofs, but these proofs necessarily involve numbers with an exponential number of bits, implying that low-degree SoS proofs cannot always be found efficiently. A sufficient condition derived from the Nullstellensatz proof system [Raghavendra and Weitz (2017)] identifies cases where bit complexity issues can be circumvented. One of the main problems left open by Raghavendra and Weitz is proving any result for refutations, as their condition applies only to polynomial systems with a large set of solutions. In this work, we broaden the class of polynomial systems for which degree-d SoS proofs can be automated. To achieve this, we develop a new criterion and we demonstrate how our criterion applies to polynomial systems beyond the scope of Raghavendra and Weitz’s result. In particular, we establish a separation for instances arising from Constraint Satisfaction Problems (CSPs). Moreover, our result extends to refutations, establishing that polynomial-time refutation is possible for broad classes of polynomial time solvable constraint problems, highlighting a first advancement in this area.

Satisfiability of Commutative vs. Non-Commutative CSPs

Authors: Andrei A. Bulatov and Stanislav Živný

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 334, 52nd International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2025)

Abstract
The Mermin-Peres magic square is a celebrated example of a system of Boolean linear equations that is not (classically) satisfiable but is satisfiable via linear operators on a Hilbert space of dimension four. A natural question is then, for what kind of problems such a phenomenon occurs? Atserias, Kolaitis, and Severini answered this question for all Boolean Constraint Satisfaction Problems (CSPs): For 0-Valid-SAT, 1-Valid-SAT, 2-SAT, Horn-SAT, and Dual Horn-SAT, classical satisfiability and operator satisfiability is the same and thus there is no gap; for all other Boolean CSPs, these notions differ as there are gaps, i.e., there are unsatisfiable instances that are satisfiable via operators on Hilbert spaces. We generalize their result to CSPs on arbitrary finite domains and give an almost complete classification: First, we show that NP-hard CSPs admit a separation between classical satisfiability and satisfiability via operators on finite- and infinite-dimensional Hilbert spaces. Second, we show that tractable CSPs of bounded width have no satisfiability gaps of any kind. Finally, we show that tractable CSPs of unbounded width can simulate, in a satisfiability-gap-preserving fashion, linear equations over an Abelian group of prime order p; for such CSPs, we obtain a separation of classical satisfiability and satisfiability via operators on infinite-dimensional Hilbert spaces. Furthermore, if p = 2, such CSPs also have gaps separating classical satisfiability and satisfiability via operators on finite- and infinite-dimensional Hilbert spaces.

Symmetric Linear Arc Monadic Datalog and Gadget Reductions

Authors: Manuel Bodirsky and Florian Starke

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 328, 28th International Conference on Database Theory (ICDT 2025)

Abstract
A Datalog program solves a constraint satisfaction problem (CSP) if and only if it derives the goal predicate precisely on the unsatisfiable instances of the CSP. There are three Datalog fragments that are particularly important for finite-domain constraint satisfaction: arc monadic Datalog, linear Datalog, and symmetric linear Datalog, each having good computational properties. We consider the fragment of Datalog where we impose all of these restrictions simultaneously, i.e., we study symmetric linear arc monadic (slam) Datalog. We characterise the CSPs that can be solved by a slam Datalog program as those that have a gadget reduction to a particular Boolean constraint satisfaction problem. We also present exact characterisations in terms of a homomorphism duality (which we call unfolded caterpillar duality), and in universal-algebraic terms (using known minor conditions, namely the existence of quasi Maltsev operations and k-absorptive operations of arity nk, for all n,k ≥ 1). Our characterisations also imply that the question whether a given finite-domain CSP can be expressed by a slam Datalog program is decidable.

On Deciding the Data Complexity of Answering Linear Monadic Datalog Queries with LTL Operators

Authors: Alessandro Artale, Anton Gnatenko, Vladislav Ryzhikov, and Michael Zakharyaschev

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 328, 28th International Conference on Database Theory (ICDT 2025)

Abstract
Our concern is the data complexity of answering linear monadic datalog queries whose atoms in the rule bodies can be prefixed by operators of linear temporal logic LTL. We first observe that, for data complexity, answering any connected query with operators ○/○- (at the next/previous moment) is either in AC⁰, or in ACC⁰\AC⁰, or NC¹-complete, or L-hard and in NL. Then we show that the problem of deciding L-hardness of answering such queries is PSpace-complete, while checking membership in the classes AC⁰ and ACC⁰ as well as NC¹-completeness can be done in ExpSpace. Finally, we prove that membership in AC⁰ or in ACC⁰, NC¹-completeness, and L-hardness are undecidable for queries with operators ◇/◇- (sometime in the future/past) provided that NC¹ ≠ NL and L ≠ NL.
