Circuits, Proofs and Propositional Model Counting

Authors: Sravanthi Chede, Leroy Chew, and Anil Shukla

Abstract
In this paper we present a new proof system framework CLIP (Circuit Linear Induction Proposition) for propositional model counting (#SAT). A CLIP proof firstly involves a Boolean circuit, calculating the cumulative function (or running count) of models counted up to a point, and secondly a propositional proof arguing for the correctness of the circuit. This concept is remarkably simple and CLIP is modular so it allows us to use existing checking formats from propositional logic, especially strong proof systems. CLIP has polynomial-size proofs for XOR-pairs which are known to require exponential-size proofs in MICE [Fichte et al., 2022]. The existence of a strong proof system that can tackle these hard problems was posed as an open problem in Beyersdorff et al. [Olaf Beyersdorff et al., 2023]. In addition, CLIP systems can p-simulate all other existing #SAT proofs systems (KCPS(#SAT) [Florent Capelli, 2019], CPOG [Bryant et al., 2023], MICE). Furthermore, CLIP has a theoretical advantage over the other #SAT proof systems in the sense that CLIP only has lower bounds from its propositional proof system or if 𝖯^#𝖯 is not contained in P/poly, which is a major open problem in circuit complexity. CLIP uses unrestricted circuits in its proof as compared to restricted structures used by the existing #SAT proof systems. In this way, CLIP avoids hardness or limitations due to circuit restrictions.

Minimizing Working-Group Conflicts in Conference Session Scheduling Through Maximum Satisfiability (Short Paper)

Authors: Sami Cherif, Heythem Sattoutah, Chu-Min Li, Corinne Lucet, and Laure Brisoux-Devendeville

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 307, 30th International Conference on Principles and Practice of Constraint Programming (CP 2024)

Abstract
This paper explores the application of Maximum Satisfiability (Max-SAT) to the complex problem of conference session scheduling, with a particular focus on minimizing working-group conflicts within the context of the ROADEF conference, the largest French-speaking event aimed at bringing together researchers from various fields such as combinatorial optimization and operational research. A Max-SAT model is introduced then enhanced with new variables, and solved through state-of-the-art solvers. The results of applying our formulation to data from ROADEF demonstrate its ability to effectively compute session schedules, while enabling to reduce the number of conflicts and the maximum number of parallel sessions compared to the handmade solutions proposed by the organizing committees. These findings underscore the potential of Max-SAT as a valuable tool for optimizing conference scheduling processes, offering a systematic and efficient solution that ensures a smoother and more productive experience for attendees and organizers alike.

Polynomial Calculus for Quantified Boolean Logic: Lower Bounds Through Circuits and Degree

Authors: Olaf Beyersdorff, Tim Hoffmann, Kaspar Kasche, and Luc Nicolas Spachmann

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 306, 49th International Symposium on Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science (MFCS 2024)

Abstract
We initiate an in-depth proof-complexity analysis of polynomial calculus (𝒬-PC) for Quantified Boolean Formulas (QBF). In the course of this we establish a tight proof-size characterisation of 𝒬-PC in terms of a suitable circuit model (polynomial decision lists). Using this correspondence we show a size-degree relation for 𝒬-PC, similar in spirit, yet different from the classic size-degree formula for propositional PC by Impagliazzo, Pudlák and Sgall (1999). We use the circuit characterisation together with the size-degree relation to obtain various new lower bounds on proof size in 𝒬-PC. This leads to incomparability results for 𝒬-PC systems over different fields.

The Relative Strength of #SAT Proof Systems

Authors: Olaf Beyersdorff, Johannes K. Fichte, Markus Hecher, Tim Hoffmann, and Kaspar Kasche

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 305, 27th International Conference on Theory and Applications of Satisfiability Testing (SAT 2024)

Abstract
The propositional model counting problem #SAT asks to compute the number of satisfying assignments for a given propositional formula. Recently, three #SAT proof systems kcps (knowledge compilation proof system), MICE (model counting induction by claim extension), and CPOG (certified partitioned-operation graphs) have been introduced with the aim to model #SAT solving and enable proof logging for solvers. Prior to this paper, the relations between these proof systems have been unclear and very few proof complexity results are known. We completely determine the simulation order of the three systems, establishing that CPOG simulates both MICE and kcps, while MICE and kcps are exponentially incomparable. This implies that CPOG is strictly stronger than the other two systems.

eSLIM: Circuit Minimization with SAT Based Local Improvement

Authors: Franz-Xaver Reichl, Friedrich Slivovsky, and Stefan Szeider

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 305, 27th International Conference on Theory and Applications of Satisfiability Testing (SAT 2024)

Abstract
eSLIM is a tool for circuit minimization that utilizes Exact Synthesis and the SAT-based local improvement method (SLIM) to locally improve circuits. eSLIM improves upon the earlier prototype CIOPS that uses Quantified Boolean Formulas (QBF) to succinctly encode resynthesis of multi-output subcircuits subject to don't cares. This paper describes two improvements. First, it presents a purely propositional encoding based on a Boolean relation characterizing the input-output behavior of the subcircuit under don't cares. This allows the use of a SAT solver for resynthesis, substantially reducing running times when applied to functions from the IWLS 2023 competition, where eSLIM placed second. Second, it proposes circuit partitioning techniques in which don't cares for a subcircuit are captured only with respect to an enclosing window, rather than the entire circuit. Circuit partitioning trades completeness for efficiency, and successfully enables the application of exact synthesis to some of the largest circuits in the EPFL suite, leading to improvements over the current best implementation for several instances.

Polynomial-Time Pseudodeterministic Constructions (Invited Talk)

Authors: Igor C. Oliveira

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 289, 41st International Symposium on Theoretical Aspects of Computer Science (STACS 2024)

Abstract
A randomised algorithm for a search problem is pseudodeterministic if it produces a fixed canonical solution to the search problem with high probability. In their seminal work on the topic, Gat and Goldwasser (2011) posed as their main open problem whether prime numbers can be pseudodeterministically constructed in polynomial time. We provide a positive solution to this question in the infinitely-often regime. In more detail, we give an unconditional polynomial-time randomised algorithm B such that, for infinitely many values of n, B(1ⁿ) outputs a canonical n-bit prime p_n with high probability. More generally, we prove that for every dense property Q of strings that can be decided in polynomial time, there is an infinitely-often pseudodeterministic polynomial-time construction of strings satisfying Q. This improves upon a subexponential-time pseudodeterministic construction of Oliveira and Santhanam (2017). This talk will cover the main ideas behind these constructions and discuss their implications, such as the existence of infinitely many primes with succinct and efficient representations.

The Role of Local Algorithms in Privacy (Invited Talk)

Authors: Sofya Raskhodnikova

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 289, 41st International Symposium on Theoretical Aspects of Computer Science (STACS 2024)

Abstract
We will discuss research areas at the intersection of local algorithms and differential privacy. The main focus will be on using local Lipschitz filters to enable black-box differentially private queries to sensitive datasets. We will also cover new sublinear computational tasks arising in private data analysis. Finally, we will touch upon distributed models of privacy.

Structurally Tractable Graph Classes (Invited Talk)

Authors: Szymon Toruńczyk

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 289, 41st International Symposium on Theoretical Aspects of Computer Science (STACS 2024)

Abstract
Sparsity theory, initiated by Ossona de Mendez and Nešetřil, identifies those classes of sparse graphs that are tractable in various ways - algorithmically, combinatorially, and logically - as exactly the nowhere dense classes. An ongoing effort aims at generalizing sparsity theory to classes of graphs that are not necessarily sparse. Twin-width theory, developed by Bonnet, Thomassé and co-authors, is a step in that direction. A theory unifying the two is anticipated. It is conjectured that the relevant notion characterising dense graph classes that are tractable, generalising nowhere denseness and bounded twin-width, is the notion of a monadically dependent class, introduced by Shelah in model theory. I will survey the recent, rapid progress in the understanding of those classes, and of the related monadically stable classes. This development combines tools from structural graph theory, logic (finite and infinite model theory), and algorithms (parameterised algorithms and range search queries).

Max Weight Independent Set in Sparse Graphs with No Long Claws

Authors: Tara Abrishami, Maria Chudnovsky, Marcin Pilipczuk, and Paweł Rzążewski

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 289, 41st International Symposium on Theoretical Aspects of Computer Science (STACS 2024)

Abstract
We revisit the recent polynomial-time algorithm for the Max Weight Independent Set (MWIS) problem in bounded-degree graphs that do not contain a fixed graph whose every component is a subdivided claw as an induced subgraph [Abrishami, Chudnovsky, Dibek, Rzążewski, SODA 2022]. First, we show that with an arguably simpler approach we can obtain a faster algorithm with running time n^{𝒪(Δ²)}, where n is the number of vertices of the instance and Δ is the maximum degree. Then we combine our technique with known results concerning tree decompositions and provide a polynomial-time algorithm for MWIS in graphs excluding a fixed graph whose every component is a subdivided claw as an induced subgraph, and a fixed biclique as a subgraph.

Satisfiability of Context-Free String Constraints with Subword-Ordering and Transducers

Abstract
We study the satisfiability of string constraints where context-free membership constraints may be imposed on variables. Additionally a variable may be constrained to be a subword of a word obtained by shuffling variables and their transductions. The satisfiability problem is known to be undecidable even without rational transductions. It is known to be NExptime-complete without transductions, if the subword relations between variables do not have a cyclic dependency between them. We show that the satisfiability problem stays decidable in this fragment even when rational transductions are added. It is 2NExptime-complete with context-free membership, and NExptime-complete with only regular membership. For the lower bound we prove a technical lemma that is of independent interest: The length of the shortest word in the intersection of a pushdown automaton (of size 𝒪(n)) and n finite-state automata (each of size 𝒪(n)) can be double exponential in n.

On a Hierarchy of Spectral Invariants for Graphs

Authors: V. Arvind, Frank Fuhlbrück, Johannes Köbler, and Oleg Verbitsky

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 289, 41st International Symposium on Theoretical Aspects of Computer Science (STACS 2024)

Abstract
We consider a hierarchy of graph invariants that naturally extends the spectral invariants defined by Fürer (Lin. Alg. Appl. 2010) based on the angles formed by the set of standard basis vectors and their projections onto eigenspaces of the adjacency matrix. We provide a purely combinatorial characterization of this hierarchy in terms of the walk counts. This allows us to give a complete answer to Fürer’s question about the strength of his invariants in distinguishing non-isomorphic graphs in comparison to the 2-dimensional Weisfeiler-Leman algorithm, extending the recent work of Rattan and Seppelt (SODA 2023). As another application of the characterization, we prove that almost all graphs are determined up to isomorphism in terms of the spectrum and the angles, which is of interest in view of the long-standing open problem whether almost all graphs are determined by their eigenvalues alone. Finally, we describe the exact relationship between the hierarchy and the Weisfeiler-Leman algorithms for small dimensions, as also some other important spectral characteristics of a graph such as the generalized and the main spectra.

Computing Twin-Width Parameterized by the Feedback Edge Number

Authors: Jakub Balabán, Robert Ganian, and Mathis Rocton

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 289, 41st International Symposium on Theoretical Aspects of Computer Science (STACS 2024)

Abstract
The problem of whether and how one can compute the twin-width of a graph - along with an accompanying contraction sequence - lies at the forefront of the area of algorithmic model theory. While significant effort has been aimed at obtaining a fixed-parameter approximation for the problem when parameterized by twin-width, here we approach the question from a different perspective and consider whether one can obtain (near-)optimal contraction sequences under a larger parameterization, notably the feedback edge number k. As our main contributions, under this parameterization we obtain (1) a linear bikernel for the problem of either computing a 2-contraction sequence or determining that none exists and (2) an approximate fixed-parameter algorithm which computes an 𝓁-contraction sequence (for an arbitrary specified 𝓁) or determines that the twin-width of the input graph is at least 𝓁. These algorithmic results rely on newly obtained insights into the structure of optimal contraction sequences, and as a byproduct of these we also slightly tighten the bound on the twin-width of graphs with small feedback edge number.
