Clustering in Varying Metrics

Abstract
We introduce the aggregated clustering problem, where one is given T instances of a center-based clustering task over the same n points, but under different metrics. The goal is to open k centers to minimize an aggregate of the clustering costs - e.g., the average or maximum - where the cost is measured via k-center/median/means objectives. More generally, we minimize a norm Ψ over the T cost values. We show that for T ≥ 3, the problem is inapproximable to any finite factor in polynomial time. For T = 2, we give constant-factor approximations. We also show W[2]-hardness when parameterized by k, but obtain f(k,T)poly(n)-time 3-approximations when parameterized by both k and T. When the metrics have structure, we obtain efficient parameterized approximation schemes (EPAS). If all T metrics have bounded ε-scatter dimension, we achieve a (1+ε)-approximation in f(k,T,ε)poly(n) time. If the metrics are induced by edge weights on a common graph G of bounded treewidth tw, and Ψ is the sum function, we get an EPAS in f(T,ε,tw)poly(n,k) time. Conversely, unless (randomized) ETH is false, any finite factor approximation is impossible if parametrized by only T, even when the treewidth is tw = Ω(polylog n).

Multi-Criteria Route Planning with Little Regret

Abstract
Multi-criteria route planning arises naturally in real-world navigation scenarios where users care about more than just one objective - such as minimizing travel time while also avoiding steep inclines or unpaved surfaces or toll routes. To capture the possible trade-offs between competing criteria, many algorithms compute the set of Pareto-optimal paths, which are paths that are not dominated by others with respect to the considered cost vectors. However, the number of Pareto-optimal paths can grow exponentially with the size of the input graph. This leads to significant computational overhead and results in large output sets that overwhelm users with too many alternatives. In this work, we present a technique based on the notion of regret minimization that efficiently filters the Pareto set during or after the search to a subset of specified size. Regret minimizing algorithms identify such a representative solution subset by considering how any possible user values any subset with respect to the objectives. We prove that regret-based filtering provides us with quality guarantees for the two main query types that are considered in the context of multi-criteria route planning, namely constrained shortest path queries and personalized path queries. Furthermore, we design a novel regret minimization algorithm that works for any number of criteria, is easy to implement and produces solutions with much smaller regret value than the most commonly used baseline algorithm. We carefully describe how to incorporate our regret minimization algorithm into existing route planning techniques to drastically reduce their running times and space consumption, while still returning paths that are close-to-optimal.

Separator-Based Alternative Paths in Customizable Contraction Hierarchies

Abstract
We propose an algorithm for computing alternatives to the shortest path in a road network, based on the speed-up technique CCH (customizable contraction hierarchy). Computing alternative paths is a well-studied problem, motivated by the fact that route-planning applications benefit from presenting different high-quality options the user can choose from. Another crucial feature of modern routing applications is the inclusion of live traffic, which requires speed-up techniques that allow efficient metric updates. Besides CCH, the other speed-up technique supporting metric updates is CRP (customizable route planning). Of the two, CCH is the more modern solution with the advantages of providing faster queries and being substantially simpler to implement efficiently. However, so far, CCH has been lacking a way of computing alternative paths. While for CRP, the commonly used plateau method for computing alternatives can be applied, this is not so straightforward for CCH. With this paper, we make CCH a viable option for alternative paths, by proposing a new separator-based approach to computing alternative paths that works hand-in-hand with the CCH data structure. With our experiments, we demonstrate that CCH can indeed be used to compute alternative paths efficiently. With this, we provide an alternative to CRP that is simpler and has lower query times.

Exact and Heuristic Dynamic Taxi Sharing with Transfers Using Shortest-Path Speedup Techniques

Abstract
We introduce a first-of-its-kind efficient, exact algorithm for the dynamic taxi-sharing problem with single-transfer journeys, i.e., a dispatcher that assigns traveler requests to a fleet of shared taxi-like vehicles allowing transfers between vehicles. We extend an existing no-transfer solution by collecting all viable pickup and dropoff vehicles for a request and computing the optimal transfer point for every pair of vehicles. We analyze underlying shortest-path problems and employ state-of-the-art routing algorithms to compute distances on-the-fly, which serves as the basis of dispatching requests with exact and up-to-date travel time information. We utilize constraints on existing routes, pruning techniques for transfer points, and both instruction- and thread-level parallelism to speed up the computation of the best assignment for every traveler. In addition to the exact variant, we propose a tunable heuristic approach that sacrifices solution quality in favor of improved running time. We evaluate our algorithm on a large road network with realistic input sets (up to 150000 requests). We demonstrate the effectiveness of our speedup techniques and the heuristic. We show first results on the benefits of transfers for taxi sharing on dense request sets, proving that our algorithm is well suited for the analysis of taxi sharing with transfers on large input instances.

Linear-Time Multilevel Graph Partitioning via Edge Sparsification

Abstract
The current landscape of balanced graph partitioning is divided into high-quality but expensive multilevel algorithms and cheaper approaches with linear running time, such as single-level algorithms and streaming algorithms. We demonstrate how to achieve the best of both worlds with a linear time multilevel algorithm. Multilevel algorithms construct a hierarchy of increasingly smaller graphs by repeatedly contracting clusters of nodes. Our approach preserves their distinct advantage, allowing refinement of the partition over multiple levels with increasing detail. At the same time, we use edge sparsification to guarantee geometric size reduction between the levels and thus linear running time. We provide a proof of the linear running time as well as additional insights into the behavior of multilevel algorithms, showing that graphs with low modularity are most likely to trigger worst-case running time. We evaluate multiple approaches for edge sparsification and integrate our algorithm into the state-of-the-art multilevel partitioner KaMinPar, maintaining its excellent parallel scalability. As demonstrated in detailed experiments, this results in a 1.49× average speedup (up to 4× for some instances) with only 1% loss in solution quality. Moreover, our algorithm clearly outperforms state-of-the-art single-level and streaming approaches.

Algorithm Engineering of SSSP with Negative Edge Weights

Abstract
Computing shortest paths is one of the most fundamental algorithmic graph problems. It is known since decades that this problem can be solved in near-linear time if all weights are nonnegative. A recent break-through by [Aaron Bernstein et al., 2022] presented a randomized near-linear time algorithm for this problem. A subsequent improvement in [Karl Bringmann et al., 2023] significantly reduced the number of logarithmic factors and thereby also simplified the algorithm. It is surprising and exciting that both of these algorithms are combinatorial and do not contain any fundamental obstacles for being practical. We launch the, to the best of our knowledge, first extensive investigation towards a practical implementation of [Karl Bringmann et al., 2023]. To this end, we give an accessible overview of the algorithm and discuss what adaptions are necessary to obtain a fast algorithm in practice. We manifest these adaptions in an efficient implementation. We test our implementation on a benchmark data set that is adapted to be more difficult for our implementation in order to allow for a fair comparison. As in [Karl Bringmann et al., 2023] as well as in our implementation there are multiple parameters to tune, we empirically evaluate their effect and thereby determine the best choices. Our implementation is then extensively compared to one of the state-of-the-art algorithms for this problem [Andrew V. Goldberg and Tomasz Radzik, 1993]. On the hardest instance type, we are faster by up to almost two orders of magnitude.

CluStRE: Streaming Graph Clustering with Multi-Stage Refinement

Abstract
We present CluStRE, a novel streaming graph clustering algorithm that balances computational efficiency with high-quality clustering using multi-stage refinement. Unlike traditional in-memory clustering approaches, CluStRE processes graphs in a streaming setting, significantly reducing memory overhead while leveraging re-streaming and evolutionary heuristics to improve solution quality. Our method dynamically constructs a quotient graph, enabling modularity-based optimization while efficiently handling large-scale graphs. We introduce multiple configurations of CluStRE to provide trade-offs between speed, memory consumption, and clustering quality. Experimental evaluations demonstrate that CluStRE improves solution quality by 89.8%, operates 2.6× faster, and uses less than two-thirds of the memory required by the state-of-the-art streaming clustering algorithm on average. Moreover, our strongest mode enhances solution quality by up to 150% on average. With this, CluStRE achieves comparable solution quality to in-memory algorithms, i.e. over 96% of the quality of clustering approaches, including Louvain, effectively bridging the gap between streaming and traditional clustering methods.

Robustness Generalizations of the Shortest Feasible Path Problem for Electric Vehicles

Abstract
Electric Vehicle routing is often modeled as a Shortest Feasible Path Problem (SFPP), which minimizes total travel time while maintaining a non-zero State of Charge (SoC) along the route. However, the problem assumes perfect information about energy consumption and charging stations, which are difficult to even estimate in practice. Further, drivers might have varying risk tolerances for different trips. To overcome these limitations, we propose two generalizations to the SFPP; they compute the shortest feasible path for any initial SoC and, respectively, for every possible minimum SoC threshold. We present algorithmic solutions for each problem, and provide two constructs: Starting Charge Maps and Buffer Maps, which represent the tradeoffs between robustness of feasible routes and their travel times. The two constructs are useful in many ways, including presenting alternate routes or providing charging prompts to users. We evaluate the performance of our algorithms on realistic input instances.

Abstract
We study the problem of graph partitioning for evolving road networks. While the road network of the world is mostly stable, small updates happen on a relatively frequent basis, as can been observed with the OpenStreetMap project (http://www.openstreetmap.org). For various reasons, professional applications demand the graph partition to stay roughly the same over time, and that changes are limited to areas where graph updates occur. In this work, we define the problem, present algorithms to satisfy the stability needs, and evaluate our techniques on continental-sized road networks. Besides the stability gains, we show that, when the changes are low and local, running our novel techniques is an order of magnitude faster than running graph partitioning from scratch.

Faster Transit Routing by Hyper Partitioning

Abstract
We present a preprocessing-based acceleration technique for computing bi-criteria Pareto-optimal journeys in public transit networks, based on the well-known RAPTOR algorithm [Delling et al 2015]. Our key idea is to first partition a hypergraph into cells, in which vertices correspond to routes (e.g., bus lines) and hyperedges to stops, and to then mark routes sufficient for optimal travel across cells. The query can then be restricted to marked routes and those in the source and target cells. This results in a practical approach, suitable for networks that are too large to be efficiently handled by the basic RAPTOR algorithm.

Rethinking Experimental Methods in Computing (Dagstuhl Seminar 16111)

Abstract
This report documents the talks and discussions at the Dagstuhl seminar 16111 "Rethinking Experimental Methods in Computing". The seminar brought together researchers from several computer science communities, including algorithm engineering, programming languages, information retrieval, high-performance computing, operations research, performance analysis, embedded systems, distributed systems, and software engineering. The main goals of the seminar were building a network of experimentalists and fostering a culture of sound quantitative experiments in computing. During the seminar, groups of participants have worked on distilling useful resources based on the collective experience gained in different communities and on planning actions to promote sound experimental methods and reproducibility efforts.

A Fast Heuristic Algorithm for the Train Unit Assignment Problem

Abstract
In this paper we study a railway optimization problem known as the Train Unit Assignment Problem. A train unit consists of a self-contained train with an engine and a set of wagons with passenger seats. Given a set of timetabled train trips, each with a required number of passenger seats, and a set of train units, each with a given number of available seats, the problem calls for the best assignment of the train units to the trips, possibly combining more than one train unit for a given trip, that fulfills the seat requests. We propose a heuristic algorithm based on the computation of a lower bound obtained by solving an Integer Linear Programming model that gives the optimal solution in a "peak period" of the day. The performance of the heuristic algorithm is computationally evaluated on real-world instances provided by a regional Italian Train Operator. The results are compared with those of existing methods from the literature, showing that the new method is able to obtain solutions of good quality in much shorter computing times.
