A Survey of Real-Time Support, Analysis, and Advancements in ROS 2

Abstract
The Robot Operating System 2 (ROS 2) has emerged as a relevant middleware framework for robotic applications, offering modularity, distributed execution, and communication. In the last six years, ROS 2 has drawn increasing attention from the real-time systems community and industry. This survey presents a comprehensive overview of research efforts that analyze, enhance, and extend ROS 2 to support real-time execution. We first provide a detailed description of the internal scheduling mechanisms of ROS 2 and its layered architecture, including the interaction with DDS-based communication and other communication middleware. We then review key contributions from the literature, covering timing analysis for both single- and multi-threaded executors, metrics such as response time, reaction time, and data age, and different communication modes. The survey also discusses community-driven enhancements to the ROS 2 runtime, including new executor algorithm designs, real-time GPU management, and microcontroller support via micro-ROS. Furthermore, we summarize techniques for bounding DDS communication delays, message filters, and profiling tools that have been developed to support analysis and experimentation. To help systematize this growing body of work, we introduce taxonomies that classify the surveyed contributions based on different criteria. This survey aims to guide both researchers and practitioners in understanding and improving the real-time capabilities of ROS 2.

On the Computational Cost of Knowledge Graph Embeddings

Abstract
Over a decade, numerous Knowledge Graph Embedding (KGE) models have been designed and evaluated on reference datasets, always with increasing performance. In this paper, we re-evaluate these models with respect to their computational efficiency during training, by estimating the computational cost of the procedure expressed in floating-point operations. We design a cost model based on analytical expressions and apply it on a collection of 20 KGE models, representative of the state-of-the-art. We show that dimensionality or parameter efficiency, used in the literature to compare models with each other, are not suitable to evaluate the true cost of models. Through fixed-budget experiments, a novel approach to evaluate KGE models based on cost estimates, we re-assess the relative performance of model families compared to the state-of-the-art. Bilinear models such as ComplEx underperform with a low computational budget while hyperbolic linear models appear to offer no particular benefit compared to simpler Euclidian models, especially the MuRE model. Neural models, such as ConvE or CompGCN, achieve reasonable performance in the literature but their high computational cost appears unnecessary when compared with other models. The trade-off between efficiency and expressivity of both linear and neural models is to be further explored.

Temporal Modelling in Cultural Heritage Knowledge Graphs: Use Cases, Requirements, Evaluation, and Decision Support

Abstract
Our culture, history and world are in constant motion, continuously shaped by the flow of time, evolving narratives, and shifting relationships. Capturing this temporal complexity within cultural heritage (CH) knowledge graphs is essential for preserving the dynamic nature of human heritage. However, standard RDF predicates fail to effectively model the temporal aspects of cultural data, such as changing facts, evolving relationships, and temporal concepts. Over the past two decades, a variety of RDF-based approaches have been proposed to address this limitation, yet guidance is missing on which method best suits specific CH contexts. This paper presents a systematic evaluation of temporal RDF modelling approaches from a CH perspective. Based on an analysis of real-world CH use cases, core temporal requirements are identified that reflect both modelling expressivity and practical concerns. Six prominent approaches - RDF*, tRDF, Named Graphs, Singleton Property, N-ary Relations, and 4D Fluents - are assessed across these requirements. Our findings reveal that no single solution fits all scenarios, but suitable approaches can be selected based on project-specific priorities. To support practitioners, a decision-support tool is introduced to guide them in selecting the most suitable extension for their specific needs. This work provides practical guidance for CH modelling and contributes to the broader development of temporally aware Linked Data.

Line Cover and Related Problems

Abstract
We study several extensions of the classic Line Cover problem of covering a set of n points in the plane with k lines. Line Cover is known to be NP-hard and our focus is on two natural generalizations: (1) Line Clustering, where the objective is to find k lines in the plane that minimize the sum of squares of distances of a given set of input points to the closest line, and (2) Hyperplane Cover, where the goal is to cover n points in ℝ^d by k hyperplanes. We also consider the more general Projective Clustering problem, which unifies both of these and has numerous applications in machine learning, data mining, and computational geometry. In this problem one seeks k affine subspaces of dimension r minimizing the sum of squares of distances of a given set of n points in ℝ^d to the closest point within one of the k affine subspaces. Our main contributions reveal interesting differences in the parameterized complexity of these problems. While Line Cover is fixed-parameter tractable parameterized by the number k of lines in the solution, we show that Line Clustering is W[1]-hard when parameterized by k and rule out algorithms of running time n^{o(k)} under the Exponential Time Hypothesis. Hyperplane Cover is known to be NP-hard even when d = 2 and by the work of Langerman and Morin [Discrete & Computational Geometry, 2005], it is FPT parameterized by k and d. We complement this result by establishing that Hyperplane Cover is W[2]-hard when parameterized by only k. We complement our hardness results by presenting an algorithm for Projective Clustering. We show that this problem is solvable in n^{𝒪(dk(r+1))} time. Not only does this yield an upper bound for Line Clustering that asymptotically matches our lower bound, but it also significantly extends the seminal work on k-Means Clustering (the special case r = 0) by Inaba, Katoh, and Imai [SoCG 1994].

Morpheus Consensus: Excelling on Trails and Autobahns

Abstract
Recent research in consensus has often focussed on protocols for State-Machine-Replication (SMR) that can handle high throughputs. Such state-of-the-art protocols (generally DAG-based) induce undue overhead when the needed throughput is low, or else exhibit unnecessarily-poor latency and communication complexity during periods of low throughput. Here we present Morpheus Consensus, which naturally morphs from a quiescent low-throughput leaderless blockchain protocol to a high-throughput leader-based DAG protocol and back, excelling in latency and complexity in both settings. During high-throughout, Morpheus pars with state-of-the-art DAG-based protocols, including Autobahn [Giridharan et al., 2024]. During low-throughput, Morpheus exhibits competitive complexity and lower latency than standard protocols such as PBFT [Castro et al., 1999] and Tendermint [Buchman, 2016; Buchman et al., 2018], which in turn do not perform well during high-throughput. The key idea of Morpheus is that as long as blocks do not conflict (due to Byzantine behaviour, network delays, or high-throughput simultaneous production) it produces a forkless blockchain, promptly finalizing each block upon arrival. It assigns a leader only if one is needed to resolve conflicts, in a manner and with performance not unlike Autobahn.

Abstract
During the workshop, we deeply discussed what CONversational Information ACcess (CONIAC) is and its unique features, proposing a world model abstracting it, and defined the Conversational Agents Framework for Evaluation (CAFE) for the evaluation of CONIAC systems, consisting of six major components: 1) goals of the system’s stakeholders, 2) user tasks to be studied in the evaluation, 3) aspects of the users carrying out the tasks, 4) evaluation criteria to be considered, 5) evaluation methodology to be applied, and 6) measures for the quantitative criteria chosen.

Mining Inter-Document Argument Structures in Scientific Papers for an Argument Web

Abstract
In Argument Mining, predicting argumentative relations between texts (or spans) remains one of the most challenging aspects, even more so in the cross-document setting. This paper makes three key contributions to advance research in this domain. We first extend an existing dataset, the Sci-Arg corpus, by annotating it with explicit inter-document argumentative relations, thereby allowing arguments to be distributed over several documents forming an Argument Web; these new annotations are published using Semantic Web technologies (RDF, OWL). Second, we explore and evaluate three automated approaches for predicting these inter-document argumentative relations, establishing critical baselines on the new dataset. We find that a simple classifier based on discourse indicators with access to context outperforms neural methods. Third, we conduct a comparative analysis of these approaches for both intra- and inter-document settings, identifying statistically significant differences in results that indicate the necessity of distinguishing between these two scenarios. Our findings highlight significant challenges in this complex domain and open crucial avenues for future research on the Argument Web of Science, particularly for those interested in leveraging Semantic Web technologies and knowledge graphs to understand scholarly discourse. With this, we provide the first stepping stones in the form of a benchmark dataset, three baseline methods, and an initial analysis for a systematic exploration of this field relevant to the Web of Data and Science.

LLM-Supported Manufacturing Mapping Generation

Abstract
In large manufacturing companies, such as Bosch, that operate thousands of production lines with each comprising up to dozens of production machines and other equipment, even simple inventory questions such as of location and quantities of a particular equipment type require non-trivial solutions. Addressing these questions requires to integrate multiple heterogeneous data sets which is time consuming and error prone and demands domain as well as knowledge experts. Knowledge graphs (KGs) are practical for consolidating inventory data by bringing it into the same format and linking inventory items. However, the KG creation and maintenance itself pose challenges as mappings are needed to connect data sets and ontologies. In this work, we address these challenges by exploring LLM-supported and context-enhanced generation of both YARRRML and RML mappings. Facing large ontologies in the manufacturing domain and token limitations in LLM prompts, we further evaluate ontology reduction methods in our approach. We evaluate our approach both quantitatively against reference mappings created manually by experts and, for YARRRML, also qualitatively with expert feedback. This work extends the exploration of the challenges with LLM-supported and context-enhanced mapping generation YARRRML [Schmidt et al., 2025] by comprehensive analyses on RML mappings and an ontology reduction evaluation. We further publish the source code of this work. Our work provides a valuable support when creating manufacturing mappings and supports data and schema updates.

Abstract
A king in a directed graph is a vertex v such that every other vertex is reachable from v via a path of length at most 2. It is well known that every tournament (a complete graph where each edge has a direction) has at least one king. Our contributions in this work are: - We show that the query complexity of determining existence of a king in arbitrary n-vertex digraphs is Θ(n²). This is in stark contrast to the case where the input is a tournament, where Shen, Sheng, and Wu [SICOMP'03] showed that a king can be found in O(n^{3/2}) queries. - In an attempt to increase the "fairness" in the definition of tournament winners, Ho and Chang [IPL'03] defined a strong king to be a king k such that, for every v that dominates k, the number of length-2 paths from k to v is strictly larger than the number of length-2 paths from v to k. We show that the query complexity of finding a strong king in a tournament is Θ(n²). This answers a question of Biswas, Jayapaul, Raman, and Satti [DAM'22] in the negative. A key component in our proofs is the design of specific tournaments where every vertex is a king, and analyzing certain properties of these tournaments. We feel these constructions and properties are independently interesting and may lead to more interesting results about tournament solutions.

Anonymous Self-Stabilising Localisation via Spatial Population Protocols

Abstract
In the distributed localisation problem (DLP), n anonymous robots (agents) A_0, ..., A_{n-1} are located at arbitrary points p_0, ..., p_{n-1} ∈ S, where S is a Euclidean space. Initially, each agent A_i operates within its own coordinate system in S, which may be inconsistent with those of other agents. The primary goal in DLP is for agents to reach a consensus on a unified (jointly agreed) coordinate system, in which all agents receive unique labels (coordinates) that accurately reflect the relative distances between all points p_0, ..., p_{n-1} in S. Extensive research on DLP has primarily focus on the feasibility and complexity of achieving consensus when agents have limited access to inter-agent distances, often due to missing or imprecise data. In contrast, this paper proposes a minimalist, computationally efficient distributed computing model where agents can query any pairwise relative positions, if needed. Specifically, we introduce a novel variant of population protocols, referred to as the spatial population protocols model. In this variant each agent can memorise one or a fixed number of coordinates, and when agents A_i and A_j interact, they can not only exchange their current knowledge but also either determine the distance d_{ij} between them in S (distance query model) or obtain the vector v_{ij} spanning points p_i and p_j (vector query model). We propose and analyse several distributed localisation protocols, including: 1) Leader-based localisation protocol with distance queries We propose and analyse two leader-based localisation protocols that stabilise silently in o(n) time. These protocols leverage an efficient solution to the novel concept of multi-contact epidemic, a natural generalisation of the core communication tool in population protocols, known as the one-way epidemic. 2) Self-stabilising leader localisation protocol with distance queries We show how to effectively utilise a leader election mechanism within the leader-based localisation protocol to get a DLP protocol that self-stabilises silently in time O(n(log n/n)^{1/(k+1)}log n) in k-dimensions. 3) Self-stabilising localisation protocol with vector queries We propose and analyse an optimally fast DLP protocol which self-stabilises silently in O(log n) time.

Towards a Better Understanding of Graph Perception in Immersive Environments

Abstract
As Immersive Analytics (IA) increasingly uses Virtual Reality (VR) for stereoscopic 3D (S3D) graph visualisation, it is crucial to understand how users perceive network structures in these immersive environments. However, little is known about how humans read S3D graphs during task solving, and how gaze behaviour indicates task performance. To address this gap, we report a user study with 18 participants asked to perform three analytical tasks on S3D graph visualisations in a VR environment. Our findings reveal systematic relationships between network structural properties and gaze behaviour. Based on these insights, we contribute a comprehensive eye tracking methodology for analysing human perception in immersive environments and establish eye tracking as a valuable tool for objectively evaluating cognitive load in S3D graph visualisation.

Resilience in Knowledge Graph Embeddings

Abstract
In recent years, knowledge graphs have gained interest and witnessed widespread applications in various domains, such as information retrieval, question-answering, recommendation systems, amongst others. Large-scale knowledge graphs to this end have demonstrated their utility in effectively representing structured knowledge. To further facilitate the application of machine learning techniques, knowledge graph embedding models have been developed. Such models can transform entities and relationships within knowledge graphs into vectors. However, these embedding models often face challenges related to noise, missing information, distribution shift, adversarial attacks, etc. This can lead to sub-optimal embeddings and incorrect inferences, thereby negatively impacting downstream applications. While the existing literature has focused so far on adversarial attacks on KGE models, the challenges related to the other critical aspects remain unexplored. In this paper, we, first of all, give a unified definition of resilience, encompassing several factors such as generalisation, in-distribution generalization, distribution adaption, and robustness. After formalizing these concepts for machine learning in general, we define them in the context of knowledge graphs. To find the gap in the existing works on resilience in the context of knowledge graphs, we perform a systematic survey, taking into account all these aspects mentioned previously. Our survey results show that most of the existing works focus on a specific aspect of resilience, namely robustness. After categorizing such works based on their respective aspects of resilience, we discuss the challenges and future research directions.

GraphRAG on Technical Documents - Impact of Knowledge Graph Schema

Abstract
Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) is seeing rapid adoption in industry to enable employees to query information captured in proprietary data for their organisation. In this work, we test the impact of domain-relevant knowledge graph schemas on the results of Microsoft’s GraphRAG pipeline. Our approach aims to address the poor quality of GraphRAG responses on technical reports rich in domain-specific terms. The use case involves technical reports about geology, chemistry and mineral processing published by the Minerals Research Institute of Western Australia (MRIWA). Four schemas are considered: a simple five-class minerals domain expert-developed schema, an expanded minerals domain schema, the Microsoft GraphRAG auto-generated schema, and a schema-less GraphRAG. These are compared to a conventional baseline RAG. Performance is evaluated using a scoring approach that accounts for the mix of correct, incorrect, additional, and missing content in RAG responses. The results show that the simple five-class minerals domain schema extracts approximately 10% more entities from the MRIWA reports than the other schema options. Additionally, both the five-class and the expanded eight-class minerals domain schemas produce the most factually correct answers and the fewest hallucinations. We attribute this to the minerals-specific schemas extracting more relevant, domain-specific information during the Indexing stage. As a result, the Query stage’s context window includes more high-value content. This contributes to the observed improvement in answer quality compared to the other pipelines. In contrast, pipelines with fewer domain-related entities in the KG retrieve less valuable information, leaving more room for irrelevant content in the context window. Baseline RAG responses were typically shorter, less complete, and contained more hallucinations compared to our GraphRAG pipelines. These resources include links to the MRIWA reports, a set of questions (from simple to challenging) along with domain-expert curated answers, schemas, and evaluations of the pipelines.

Strategic Analysis of Just-In-Time Liquidity Provision in Concentrated Liquidity Market Makers

Abstract
Liquidity providers (LPs) are essential figures in the operation of automated market makers (AMMs); in exchange for transaction fees, LPs lend the liquidity that allows AMMs to operate. While many prior works have studied the incentive structures of LPs in general, we currently lack a principled understanding of a special class of LPs known as Just-In-Time (JIT) LPs. These are strategic agents who momentarily supply liquidity for a single swap, in an attempt to extract disproportionately high fees relative to the remaining passive LPs. This paper provides the first formal, transaction-level model of JIT liquidity provision for a widespread class of AMMs known as Concentrated Liquidity Market Makers (CLMMs), as seen in Uniswap V3, for instance. We characterize the landscape of price impact and fee allocation in these systems, formulate and analyze a non-linear optimization problem faced by JIT LPs, and prove the existence of an optimal strategy. By fitting our optimal solution for JIT LPs to real-world CLMMs, we observe that in liquidity pools (particularly those with risky assets), there is a significant gap between observed and optimal JIT behavior. Existing JIT LPs often fail to account for price impact; doing so, we estimate they could increase earnings by up to 69% on average over small time windows. We also show that JIT liquidity, when deployed strategically, can improve market efficiency reducing slippage for traders, albeit at the cost of eroding passive LP profits by up to 44% per trade on average.

On Finding 𝓁-Th Smallest Perfect Matchings

Abstract
Given an undirected weighted graph G and an integer k, Exact-Weight Perfect Matching (EWPM) is the problem of finding a perfect matching of weight exactly k in G. In this paper, we study EWPM and its variants. The EWPM problem is famous, since in the case of unary encoded weights, Mulmuley, Vazirani, and Vazirani showed almost 40 years ago that the problem can be solved in randomized polynomial time. However, up to this date no derandomization is known. Our first result is a simple deterministic algorithm for EWPM that runs in time n^𝒪(𝓁), where 𝓁 is the number of distinct weights that perfect matchings in G can take. In fact, we show how to find an 𝓁-th smallest perfect matching in any weighted graph (even if the weights are encoded in binary, in which case EWPM in general is known to be NP-complete) in time n^𝒪(𝓁) for any integer 𝓁. Similar next-to-optimal variants have also been studied recently for the shortest path problem. For our second result, we extend the list of problems that are known to be equivalent to EWPM. We show that EWPM is equivalent under a weight-preserving reduction to the Exact Cycle Sum problem (ECS) in undirected graphs with a conservative (i.e. no negative cycles) weight function. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to study this problem. As a consequence, the latter problem is contained in RP if the weights are encoded in unary. Finally, we identify a special case of EWPM, called BCPM, which was recently studied by El Maalouly, Steiner and Wulf. We show that BCPM is equivalent under a weight-preserving transformation to another problem recently studied by Schlotter and Sebő as well as Geelen and Kapadia: the Shortest Odd Cycle problem (SOC) in undirected graphs with conservative weights. Finally, our n^𝒪(𝓁) algorithm works in this setting as well, identifying a tractable special case of SOC, BCPM, and ECS.
