Commutative Algebras of Series

Authors: Lorenzo Clemente

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 380, 41st Annual Symposium on Logic in Computer Science (LICS 2026)

Abstract
We consider a large family of product operations of formal power series in noncommuting indeterminates, the classes of automata they define, and the respective equivalence problems. A P-product of series is defined coinductively by a polynomial product rule P, which gives a recursive recipe to build the product of two series as a function of the series themselves and their derivatives. The first main result of the paper is a complete and decidable characterisation of all product rules P giving rise to P-products which are bilinear, associative, and commutative. The characterisation shows that there are infinitely many such products, and in particular it applies to the notable Hadamard, shuffle, and infiltration products from the literature. Every P-product gives rise to the class of P-automata, an infinite-state model where states are terms. The second main result of the paper is that the equivalence problem for P-automata is decidable for P-products satisfying our characterisation. This explains, subsumes, and extends previous results on Hadamard, shuffle, and infiltration automata. We have formalised most results in the proof assistant Agda.

First-Order Logic and Twin-Width for Some Geometric Graphs

Authors: Colin Geniet, Gunwoo Kim, and Lucas Meijer

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 367, 42nd International Symposium on Computational Geometry (SoCG 2026)

Abstract
For some geometric graph classes, tractability of testing first-order formulas is precisely characterised by the graph parameter twin-width. This was first proved for interval graphs among others in [BCKKLT, IPEC '22], where the equivalence is called delineation, and more generally holds for circle graphs, rooted directed path graphs, and H-graphs when H is a forest. Delineation is based on the key idea that geometric graphs often admit natural vertex orderings, allowing to use the very rich theory of twin-width for ordered graphs. Answering two questions raised in their work, we prove that delineation holds for intersection graphs of non-degenerate axis-parallel unit segment graphs, but fails for visibility graphs of 1.5D terrains. We also prove delineation for intersection graphs of circular arcs.

Computing Twin-Width via Treedepth and Vertex Integrity

Authors: Robert Ganian and Mathis Rocton

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 364, 43rd International Symposium on Theoretical Aspects of Computer Science (STACS 2026)

Abstract
Twin-width is a graph parameter that has become central to explaining the fixed-parameter tractability of first-order model checking across many graph classes. Despite its algorithmic importance, computing twin-width remains poorly understood: even recognizing graphs of twin-width at most four is NP-hard, and no fixed-parameter approximations parameterized by twin-width itself are known. A recent approach towards breaking this barrier focuses on first developing fixed-parameter algorithms for computing or approximating twin-width under parameterizations distinct from twin-width. Our first result establishes that approximating twin-width is fixed-parameter tractable when parameterized by treedepth, thereby breaking the long-standing barrier that all previous tractable parameterizations were based on deletion distance. The proof proceeds via oriented twin-width, yielding the first constructive evidence that this variant may be easier to handle algorithmically. As our second main result, we show that computing twin-width exactly is fixed-parameter tractable with respect to vertex integrity. This constitutes the first non-trivial parameterized algorithm for computing optimal contraction sequences.

A Pumping-Like Lemma for Languages over Infinite Alphabets

Authors: Yoav Danieli

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 364, 43rd International Symposium on Theoretical Aspects of Computer Science (STACS 2026)

Abstract
We prove a kind of a pumping lemma for languages accepted by one-register alternating finite-memory automata. As a corollary, we obtain that the set of lengths of words in such languages is semi-linear.

A Linear Kernel for Independent Set Reconfiguration in Planar Graphs

Authors: Nicolas Bousquet and Daniel W. Cranston

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 364, 43rd International Symposium on Theoretical Aspects of Computer Science (STACS 2026)

Abstract
Fix a positive integer r, and a graph G that is K_{3,r}-minor-free. Let I_s and I_t be two independent sets in G, each of size k. We begin with a "token" on each vertex of I_s and seek to move all tokens to I_t, by repeated "token jumping", removing a single token from one vertex and placing it on another vertex. We require that each intermediate arrangement of tokens again specifies an independent set of size k. Given G, I_s, and I_t, we ask whether there exists a sequence of token jumps that transforms I_s into I_t. When k is part of the input, this problem is known to be PSPACE-complete. But it was shown by Ito, Kamiński, and Ono [Ito et al., 2014] to be fixed-parameter tractable. That is, the problem can be solved in time f(k)⋅ P(n), for some function f and polynomial P, where n denotes the order of G. Here we strengthen the upper bound on the running time in terms of k by showing that the problem has a kernel of size linear in k. More precisely, we transform an arbitrary input problem on a K_{3,r}-minor-free graph (for some fixed positive integer r) into an equivalent problem on a (K_{3,r}-minor-free) graph with order O(k). This answers positively a question of Bousquet, Mouawad, Nishimura, and Siebertz [Nicolas Bousquet et al., 2022] and improves the recent quadratic kernel of Cranston, Mühlenthaler, and Peyrille [Daniel W. Cranston et al., 2024]. For planar graphs, we further strengthen this upper bound to get a kernel of size at most 42k.

Generalised Quantifiers Based on Rabin-Mostowski Index

Authors: Denis Kuperberg, Damian Niwiński, Paweł Parys, and Michał Skrzypczak

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 364, 43rd International Symposium on Theoretical Aspects of Computer Science (STACS 2026)

Abstract
In this work we introduce new generalised quantifiers which allow us to express the Rabin-Mostowski index of automata. Our main results study expressive power and decidability of the monadic second-order (MSO) logic extended with these quantifiers. We study these problems in the realm of both ω-words and infinite trees. As it turns out, the pictures in these two cases are very different. In the case of ω-words the new quantifiers can be effectively expressed in pure MSO logic. In contrast, in the case of infinite trees, addition of these quantifiers leads to an undecidable formalism. To realise index-quantifier elimination, we consider the extension of MSO by game quantifiers. As a tool, we provide a specific quantifier-elimination procedure for them. Moreover, we introduce a novel construction of transducers realising strategies in ω-regular games with monadic parameters.

Weakly-Sparse and Strongly Flip-Flat Classes of Graphs Are Uniformly Almost-Wide

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 363, 34th EACSL Annual Conference on Computer Science Logic (CSL 2026)

Abstract
In this work we take a step towards characterising strongly flip-flat classes of graphs. Strong flip-flatness appears to be the analogue of uniform almost-wideness in the setting of dense classes of graphs. We prove that strongly flip-flat classes of graphs that are weakly sparse are indeed uniformly almost-wide.

Register-Bounded Synthesis from Constraint LTL

Authors: Nino Dauvier, Emmanuel Filiot, and Pierre-Alain Reynier

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 363, 34th EACSL Annual Conference on Computer Science Logic (CSL 2026)

Abstract
We consider synthesis problems from logical specifications over infinite data domains, expressed in the logic constraint LTL (CLTL), which extends LTL with predicates over an infinite set of data values. We consider register-bounded synthesis, where the goal is to automatically generate, if it exists, a transducer with r registers that realizes a given CLTL formula, where r is also given as input. We prove that CLTL register-bounded synthesis is 2ExpTime-c for various data domains such as any infinite set with equality, (ℚ, <), and (ℕ, <). For the latter domain, this contrasts with known undecidability results of (unbounded) register CLTL synthesis, by Bhaskar and Praveen. Lastly, we consider synthesis in a partial observation setting by extending CLTL with invisible variables.

Uniformity Within Parameterized Circuit Classes

Authors: Steef Hegeman, Jan Martens, and Alfons Laarman

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 358, 20th International Symposium on Parameterized and Exact Computation (IPEC 2025)

Abstract
We study uniformity conditions for parameterized Boolean circuit families. Uniformity conditions require that the infinitely many circuits in a circuit family are in some sense easy to construct from one shared description. For shallow circuit families, logtime-uniformity is often desired but quite technical to prove. Despite that, proving it is often left as an exercise for the reader - even for recently introduced classes in parameterized circuit complexity, where uniformity conditions have not yet been explicitly studied. We formally define parameterized versions of linear-uniformity, logtime-uniformity, and FO-uniformity, and prove that these result in equivalent complexity classes when imposed on para-AC⁰ and para-AC^{0↑}. Overall, we provide a convenient way to verify uniformity for shallow parameterized circuit classes, and thereby substantiate claims of uniformity in the literature.

Regulating Synchronous Data Exchange to Meet Control Flow and Data Specifications

Authors: Ashwin Bhaskar and M. Praveen

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 360, 45th IARCS Annual Conference on Foundations of Software Technology and Theoretical Computer Science (FSTTCS 2025)

Abstract
When multiple software components interact via method calls, we may want to ensure that the order of invoked methods and the arguments provided adhere to some specification. The classic problem associated with interface automata checks for the existence of a mediator whose intention is to act as a buffer in between method invocations so that invocations do not go unanswered. We extend the base model underlying interface automata, enabling them to exchange integer values - one automaton generates an integer value and outputs it by firing a generating transition and another automaton receives the value by synchronously firing a receiving transition. Transitions in the automata can have guards with linear order constraints on the exchanged values, influencing which methods can or can not be invoked later. So the generated values influence the sequences of invocations that are enabled. We specify desirable properties of the sequence of method calls and the arguments passed to them using an extension of Linear Temporal Logic (LTL). We consider the interoperability problem, which is to check if it is possible to generate integer values in such a way that all enabled sequences satisfy the given specification. We show that the interoperability problem is undecidable in general, even when there are only two participating automata. We show decidability in the case where guards on generating transitions can only have equality constraints on the exchanged value (but receiving transitions can continue to have linear order constraints). We model this problem as a game between two players, one trying to generate integer values such that violating sequences are disabled while the other player tries to dig out violating sequences that are enabled. Interoperability is equivalent to the first player having a winning strategy. We solve this game via a finite abstraction, which results in a symbolic game. We then show that winning strategies for the symbolic game can be translated to winning strategies for the original game over integers.

The Tape Reconfiguration Problem and Its Consequences for Dominating Set Reconfiguration

Authors: Nicolas Bousquet, Quentin Deschamps, Arnaud Mary, Amer E. Mouawad, and Théo Pierron

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 351, 33rd Annual European Symposium on Algorithms (ESA 2025)

Abstract
A dominating set of a graph G = (V,E) is a set of vertices D ⊆ V whose closed neighborhood is V, i.e., N[D] = V. We view a dominating set as a collection of tokens placed on the vertices of D. In the token sliding variant of the Dominating Set Reconfiguration problem (TS-DSR), we seek to transform a source dominating set into a target dominating set in G by sliding tokens along edges, and while maintaining a dominating set all along the transformation. TS-DSR is known to be PSPACE-complete even restricted to graphs of pathwidth w, for some non-explicit constant w and to be XL-complete parameterized by the size k of the solution. The first contribution of this article consists in using a novel approach to provide the first explicit constant for which the TS-DSR problem is PSPACE-complete, a question that was left open in the literature. From a parameterized complexity perspective, the token jumping variant of DSR, i.e., where tokens can jump to arbitrary vertices, is known to be FPT when parameterized by the size of the dominating sets on nowhere dense classes of graphs. But, in contrast, no non-trivial result was known about TS-DSR. We prove that DSR is actually much harder in the sliding model since it is XL-complete when restricted to bounded pathwidth graphs and even when parameterized by k plus the feedback vertex set number of the graph. This gives, for the first time, a difference of behavior between the complexity under token sliding and token jumping for some problem on graphs of bounded treewidth. All our results are obtained using a brand new method, based on the hardness of the so-called Tape Reconfiguration problem, a problem we believe to be of independent interest. We complement these hardness results with a positive result showing that DSR (parameterized by k) in the sliding model is FPT on planar graphs, also answering an open problem from the literature.

Near-Optimal Vertex Fault-Tolerant Labels for Steiner Connectivity

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 351, 33rd Annual European Symposium on Algorithms (ESA 2025)

Abstract
We present a compact labeling scheme for determining whether a designated set of terminals in a graph remains connected after any f (or less) vertex failures occur. An f-FT Steiner connectivity labeling scheme for an n-vertex graph G = (V,E) with terminal set U ⊆ V provides labels to the vertices of G, such that given only the labels of any subset F ⊆ V with |F| ≤ f, one can determine if U remains connected in G-F. The main complexity measure is the maximum label length. The special case U = V of global connectivity has been recently studied by Jiang, Parter, and Petruschka [Yonggang Jiang et al., 2025], who provided labels of n^{1-1/f} ⋅ poly(f,log n) bits. This is near-optimal (up to poly(f,log n) factors) by a lower bound of Long, Pettie and Saranurak [Yaowei Long et al., 2025]. Our scheme achieves labels of |U|^{1-1/f} ⋅ poly(f, log n) for general U ⊆ V, which is near-optimal for any given size |U| of the terminal set. To handle terminal sets, our approach differs from [Yonggang Jiang et al., 2025]. We use a well-structured Steiner tree for U produced by a decomposition theorem of Duan and Pettie [Ran Duan and Seth Pettie, 2020], and bypass the need for Nagamochi-Ibaraki sparsification [Hiroshi Nagamochi and Toshihide Ibaraki, 1992].

A Polynomial-Time Approximation Algorithm for Complete Interval Minors

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 353, Approximation, Randomization, and Combinatorial Optimization. Algorithms and Techniques (APPROX/RANDOM 2025)

Abstract
As shown by Robertson and Seymour, deciding whether the complete graph K_t is a minor of an input graph G is a fixed parameter tractable problem when parameterized by t. From the approximation viewpoint, a substantial gap remains: there is no PTAS for finding the largest complete minor unless P = NP, whereas the best known result is a polytime O(√ n)-approximation algorithm by Alon, Lingas and Wahlén. We investigate the complexity of finding K_t as interval minor in ordered graphs (i.e. graphs with a linear order on the vertices, in which intervals are contracted to form minors). Our main result is a polytime f(t)-approximation algorithm, where f is triply exponential in t but independent of n. The algorithm is based on delayed decompositions and shows that ordered graphs without a K_t interval minor can be constructed via a bounded number of three operations: closure under substitutions, edge union, and concatenation of a stable set. As a byproduct, graphs avoiding K_t as an interval minor have bounded chromatic number.

Solving Partial Dominating Set and Related Problems Using Twin-Width

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 345, 50th International Symposium on Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science (MFCS 2025)

Abstract
Partial vertex cover and partial dominating set are two well-investigated optimization problems. While they are W[1]-hard on general graphs, they have been shown to be fixed-parameter tractable on many sparse graph classes, including nowhere-dense classes. In this paper, we demonstrate that these problems are also fixed-parameter tractable with respect to the twin-width of a graph. Indeed, we establish a more general result: every graph property that can be expressed by a logical formula of the form ϕ≡∃ x₁⋯ ∃ x_k ∑_{α ∈ I} #y ψ_α(x₁,…,x_k,y) ≥ t, where ψ_α is a quantifier-free formula for each α ∈ I, t is an arbitrary number, and #y is a counting quantifier, can be evaluated in time f(d,k)n, where n is the number of vertices and d is the width of a contraction sequence that is part of the input. In addition to the aforementioned problems, this includes also connected partial dominating set and independent partial dominating set.

Elimination Distance to Dominated Clusters

Authors: Nicole Schirrmacher, Sebastian Siebertz, and Alexandre Vigny

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 345, 50th International Symposium on Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science (MFCS 2025)

Abstract
In the Dominated Cluster Deletion problem, we are given an undirected graph G and integers k and d and the question is to decide whether there exists a set of at most k vertices whose removal results in a graph in which each connected component has a dominating set of size at most d. In the Elimination Distance to Dominated Clusters problem, we are again given an undirected graph G and integers k and d and the question is to decide whether we can recursively delete vertices up to depth k such that each remaining connected component has a dominating set of size at most d. Bentert et al. [Bentert et al., MFCS 2024] recently provided an almost complete classification of the parameterized complexity of Dominated Cluster Deletion with respect to the parameters k, d, c, and Δ, where c and Δ are the degeneracy, and the maximum degree of the input graph, respectively. In particular, they provided a non-uniform algorithm with running time f(k,d)⋅ n^{𝒪(d)}. They left as an open problem whether the problem is fixed-parameter tractable with respect to the parameter k + d + c. We provide a uniform algorithm running in time f(k,d)⋅ n^{𝒪(d)} for both Dominated Cluster Deletion and Elimination Distance to Dominated Clusters. We furthermore show that both problems are FPT when parameterized by k+d+𝓁, where 𝓁 is the semi-ladder index of the input graph, a parameter that is upper bounded and may be much smaller than the degeneracy c, positively answering the open question of Bentert et al. We further complete the picture by providing an almost full classification for the parameterized complexity and kernelization complexity of Elimination Distance to Dominated Clusters. The one difficult base case that remains open is whether Treedepth (the case d = 0) is NP-hard on graphs of bounded maximum degree.
