One-Clock Synthesis Problems

Abstract
We study a generalisation of Büchi-Landweber games to the timed setting. The winning condition is specified by a non-deterministic timed automaton, and one of the players can elapse time. We perform a systematic study of synthesis problems in all variants of timed games, depending on which player’s winning condition is specified, and which player’s strategy (or controller, a finite-memory strategy) is sought. As our main result we prove ubiquitous undecidability in all the variants, both for strategy and controller synthesis, already for winning conditions specified by one-clock automata. This strengthens and generalises previously known undecidability results. We also fully characterise those cases where finite memory is sufficient to win, namely existence of a strategy implies existence of a controller. All our results are stated in the timed setting, while analogous results hold in the data setting where one-clock automata are replaced by one-register ones.

Deciding the Value of Two-Clock Almost Non-Zeno Weighted Timed Games

Abstract
The Value Problem for weighted timed games (wtgs) consists in determining, given a two-player weighted timed game with a reachability objective and a rational threshold, whether or not the value of the game exceeds the threshold. When restrained to wtgs with non-negative weight, this problem is known to be undecidable for weighted timed games with three or more clocks, and decidable for one-clock wtgs. The Value Problem for two-clock non-negative wtgs, which remained stubbornly open for a decade, was recently shown to be undecidable. In this paper, we show that the Value Problem is decidable when considering two-clock almost non-Zeno wtgs.

Higher-Order Timed Automata and Tail Recursion

Abstract
Timed Automata (TA) are a popular formalism to model systems in dense linear time. However, due to their finite state-space, they can only model systems with a finitary logical behavior. There are extensions to e.g., timed pushdown systems and timed recursive state machines. Higher-Order Recursion Schemes (HORS) are another popular model for infinite-state, non-regular systems, naturally stratified by their type-theoretic order. We recently introduced Real-Time Recursion schemes as an approximation of HORS to real-time systems. This paper updates Real-Time Recursion Schemes into Higher-Order Timed Automata, a formalism that defines a tree-shaped timed automaton, which is more suitable to model actual systems. We show that the model-checking problem against the timed version of the modal mu-calculus exhibits the expected complexity bounds, i.e., an increase by one exponential towards the untimed version. We also show that, in the presence of tail recursion, half an exponential can be recovered, mirroring similar gains in the untimed setting. We also give a matching lower bound for the special case of order-1 HORTA. We conjecture that this can be generalized for all orders.

Resolving Nondeterminism with Randomness

Abstract
We define and study classes of ω-regular automata for which the nondeterminism can be resolved by a policy that uses a combination of memory and randomness on any input word, based solely on the prefix read so far. We examine two settings for providing the input word to an automaton. In the first setting, called adversarial resolvability, the input word is constructed letter-by-letter by an adversary, dependent on the resolver’s previous decisions. In the second setting, called stochastic resolvability, the adversary pre-commits to an infinite word and reveals it letter-by-letter. In each setting, we require the existence of an almost-sure resolver, i.e., a policy that ensures that as long as the adversary provides a word in the language of the underlying nondeterministic automaton, the run constructed by the policy is accepting with probability 1. The class of automata that are adversarially resolvable is the well-studied class of history-deterministic automata. The case of stochastically resolvable automata, on the other hand, defines a novel class. Restricting the class of resolvers in both settings to stochastic policies without memory introduces two additional new classes of automata. We show that the new automata classes offer interesting trade-offs between succinctness, expressivity, and computational complexity, providing a fine gradation between deterministic automata and nondeterministic automata.

Resolving Nondeterminism by Chance

Abstract
History-deterministic automata are those in which nondeterministic choices can be correctly resolved stepwise: there is a strategy to select a continuation of a run given the next input letter so that if the overall input word admits some accepting run, then the constructed run is also accepting. Motivated by checking qualitative properties in probabilistic verification, we consider the setting where the resolver strategy can randomise and only needs to succeed with lower-bounded probability. We study the expressiveness of such stochastically-resolvable automata as well as consider the decision questions of whether a given automaton has this property. In particular, we show that it is undecidable to check if a given NFA is λ-stochastically resolvable. This problem is decidable for finitely-ambiguous automata. We also present complexity upper and lower bounds for several well-studied classes of automata for which this problem remains decidable.

Prophecies All the Way: Game-Based Model-Checking for HyperQPTL Beyond ∀*∃*

Abstract
Model-checking HyperLTL, a temporal logic expressing properties of sets of traces with applications to information-flow based security and privacy, has a decidable, but TOWER-complete, model-checking problem. While the classical model-checking algorithm for full HyperLTL is automata-theoretic, more recently, a game-based alternative for the ∀*∃*-fragment has been presented. Here, we employ imperfect information-games to extend the game-based approach to full HyperQPTL, which features arbitrary quantifier prefixes and quantification over propositions and can express every ω-regular hyperproperty. As a byproduct of our game-based algorithm, we obtain finite-state implementations of Skolem functions via transducers with lookahead that explain satisfaction or violation of HyperQPTL properties.

Temporal Explorability Games

Abstract
Temporal graphs extend ordinary graphs with discrete time that affects the availability of edges. We consider solving games played on temporal graphs where one player aims to explore the graph, i.e., visit all vertices. The complexity depends majorly on two factors: the presence of an adversary and how edge availability is specified. We demonstrate that on static graphs, where edges are always available, solving explorability games is just as hard as solving reachability games. In contrast, on temporal graphs, the complexity of explorability coincides with generalized reachability (NP-complete for one-player and PSPACE-complete for two player games). We show that if temporal graphs are given symbolically, even one-player reachability (and thus explorability and generalized reachability) games are PSPACE-hard. For one player, all these are also solvable in PSPACE and for two players, they are in PSPACE, EXP and EXP, respectively.

A Direct Reduction from Stochastic Parity Games to Simple Stochastic Games

Abstract
Significant progress has been recently achieved in developing efficient solutions for simple stochastic games (SSGs), focusing on reachability objectives. While reductions from stochastic parity games (SPGs) to SSGs have been presented in the literature through the use of multiple intermediate game models, a direct and simple reduction has been notably absent. This paper introduces a novel and direct polynomial-time reduction from quantitative SPGs to quantitative SSGs. By leveraging a gadget-based transformation that effectively removes the priority function, we construct an SSG that simulates the behavior of a given SPG. We formally establish the correctness of our direct reduction. Furthermore, we demonstrate that under binary encoding this reduction is polynomial, thereby directly corroborating the known NP ∩ coNP complexity of SPGs and providing new understanding in the relationship between parity and reachability objectives in turn-based stochastic games.

A Framework for Extraction and Transformation of Documents

Abstract
We present a theoretical framework for the extraction and transformation of text documents as a two-phase process: The first phase uses document spanners to extract information from the input document. The second phase transforms the extracted information into a suitable output. To support several reasonable extract-transform scenarios, we propose for the first phase an extension of document spanners from span-tuples to so-called multispan-tuples, where variables are mapped to sets of spans instead of only single spans. We focus on multispanners described by regex formulas, and we prove that these have the same desirable properties as standard regular spanners. To formalize the second phase, we consider transformations that map every pair document-tuple, where each tuple comes from the (multi)span-relation extracted in the first phase, into a new output document. The specification of the two phases is what we call an extract-transform (ET) program, which covers practically relevant extract-transform tasks. In this paper, our main technical goal is to identify a broad class of ET programs that can be evaluated efficiently. We specifically focus on the scenario of regular ET programs: the extraction phase is given by a regex multispanner and the transformation phase is given by a regular string-to-string function. We show that for any regular ET program, given an input document, we can enumerate all final output documents with output-linear delay after linear preprocessing. As a side effect, we characterize the expressive power of regular ET programs and also show that they have desirable properties, like being closed under composition.

Weighted Transducers for Robustness Verification

Abstract
Automata theory provides us with fundamental notions such as languages, membership, emptiness and inclusion that in turn allow us to specify and verify properties of reactive systems in a useful manner. However, these notions all yield "yes"/"no" answers that sometimes fall short of being satisfactory answers when the models being analyzed are imperfect, and the observations made are prone to errors. To address this issue, a common engineering approach is not just to verify that a system satisfies a property, but whether it does so robustly. We present notions of robustness that place a metric on words, thus providing a natural notion of distance between words. Such a metric naturally leads to a topological neighborhood of words and languages, leading to quantitative and robust versions of the membership, emptiness and inclusion problems. More generally, we consider weighted transducers to model the cost of errors. Such a transducer models neighborhoods of words by providing the cost of rewriting a word into another. The main contribution of this work is to study robustness verification problems in the context of weighted transducers. We provide algorithms for solving the robust and quantitative versions of the membership and inclusion problems while providing useful motivating case studies including approximate pattern matching problems to detect clinically relevant events in a large type-1 diabetes dataset.

Model-Free Reinforcement Learning for Stochastic Parity Games

Abstract
This paper investigates the use of model-free reinforcement learning to compute the optimal value in two-player stochastic games with parity objectives. In this setting, two decision makers, player Min and player Max, compete on a finite game arena - a stochastic game graph with unknown but fixed probability distributions - to minimize and maximize, respectively, the probability of satisfying a parity objective. We give a reduction from stochastic parity games to a family of stochastic reachability games with a parameter ε, such that the value of a stochastic parity game equals the limit of the values of the corresponding simple stochastic games as the parameter ε tends to 0. Since this reduction does not require the knowledge of the probabilistic transition structure of the underlying game arena, model-free reinforcement learning algorithms, such as minimax Q-learning, can be used to approximate the value and mutual best-response strategies for both players in the underlying stochastic parity game. We also present a streamlined reduction from 1 1/2-player parity games to reachability games that avoids recourse to nondeterminism. Finally, we report on the experimental evaluations of both reductions.

FO-Definable Transformations of Infinite Strings

Abstract
The theory of regular and aperiodic transformations of finite strings has recently received a lot of interest. These classes can be equivalently defined using logic (Monadic second-order logic and first-order logic), two-way machines (regular two-way and aperiodic two-way transducers), and one-way register machines (regular streaming string and aperiodic streaming string transducers). These classes are known to be closed under operations such as sequential composition and regular (star-free) choice; and problems such as functional equivalence and type checking, are decidable for these classes. On the other hand, for infinite strings these results are only known for regular transformations: Alur, Filiot, and Trivedi studied transformations of infinite strings and introduced an extension of streaming string transducers over infinte strings and showed that they capture monadic second-order definable transformations for infinite strings. In this paper we extend their work to recover connection for infinite strings among first-order logic definable transformations, aperiodic two-way transducers, and aperiodic streaming string transducers.

Mean-Payoff Games on Timed Automata

Abstract
Mean-payoff games on timed automata are played on the infinite weighted graph of configurations of priced timed automata between two players - Player Min and Player Max - by moving a token along the states of the graph to form an infinite run. The goal of Player Min is to minimize the limit average weight of the run, while the goal of the Player Max is the opposite. Brenguier, Cassez, and Raskin recently studied a variation of these games and showed that mean-payoff games are undecidable for timed automata with five or more clocks. We refine this result by proving the undecidability of mean-payoff games with three clocks. On a positive side, we show the decidability of mean-payoff games on one-clock timed automata with binary price-rates. A key contribution of this paper is the application of dynamic programming based proof techniques applied in the context of average reward optimization on an uncountable state and action space.

Stochastic Timed Games Revisited

Abstract
Stochastic timed games (STGs), introduced by Bouyer and Forejt, naturally generalize both continuous-time Markov chains and timed automata by providing a partition of the locations between those controlled by two players (Player Box and Player Diamond) with competing objectives and those governed by stochastic laws. Depending on the number of players - 2, 1, or 0 - subclasses of stochastic timed games are often classified as 2 1/2-player, 1 1/2-player, and 1/2-player games where the 1/2 symbolizes the presence of the stochastic "nature" player. For STGs with reachability objectives it is known that 1 1/2-player one-clock STGs are decidable for qualitative objectives, and that 2 1/2-player three-clock STGs are undecidable for quantitative reachability objectives. This paper further refines the gap in this decidability spectrum. We show that quantitative reachability objectives are already undecidable for 1 1/2 player four-clock STGs, and even under the time-bounded restriction for 2 1/2-player five-clock STGs. We also obtain a class of 1 1/2, 2 1/2 player STGs for which the quantitative reachability problem is decidable.

Revisiting Robustness in Priced Timed Games

Abstract
Priced timed games are optimal-cost reachability games played between two players---the controller and the environment---by moving a token along the edges of infinite graphs of configurations of priced timed automata. The goal of the controller is to reach a given set of target locations as cheaply as possible, while the goal of the environment is the opposite. Priced timed games are known to be undecidable for timed automata with 3 or more clocks, while they are known to be decidable for automata with 1 clock. In an attempt to recover decidability for priced timed games Bouyer, Markey, and Sankur studied robust priced timed games where the environment has the power to slightly perturb delays proposed by the controller. Unfortunately, however, they showed that the natural problem of deciding the existence of optimal limit-strategy---optimal strategy of the controller where the perturbations tend to vanish in the limit---is undecidable with 10 or more clocks. In this paper we revisit this problem and improve our understanding of the decidability of these games. We show that the limit-strategy problem is already undecidable for a subclass of robust priced timed games with 5 or more clocks. On a positive side, we show the decidability of the existence of almost optimal strategies for the same subclass of one-clock robust priced timed games by adapting a classical construction by Bouyer at al. for one-clock priced timed games.
