A Survey of Real-Time Support, Analysis, and Advancements in ROS 2

Abstract
The Robot Operating System 2 (ROS 2) has emerged as a relevant middleware framework for robotic applications, offering modularity, distributed execution, and communication. In the last six years, ROS 2 has drawn increasing attention from the real-time systems community and industry. This survey presents a comprehensive overview of research efforts that analyze, enhance, and extend ROS 2 to support real-time execution. We first provide a detailed description of the internal scheduling mechanisms of ROS 2 and its layered architecture, including the interaction with DDS-based communication and other communication middleware. We then review key contributions from the literature, covering timing analysis for both single- and multi-threaded executors, metrics such as response time, reaction time, and data age, and different communication modes. The survey also discusses community-driven enhancements to the ROS 2 runtime, including new executor algorithm designs, real-time GPU management, and microcontroller support via micro-ROS. Furthermore, we summarize techniques for bounding DDS communication delays, message filters, and profiling tools that have been developed to support analysis and experimentation. To help systematize this growing body of work, we introduce taxonomies that classify the surveyed contributions based on different criteria. This survey aims to guide both researchers and practitioners in understanding and improving the real-time capabilities of ROS 2.

On Closure Properties of Read-Once Oblivious Algebraic Branching Programs

Abstract
We investigate the closure properties of read-once oblivious Algebraic Branching Programs (roABPs) under various natural algebraic operations and prove the following. - Non-closure under factoring: There is a sequence of explicit polynomials (f_n(x₁,…, x_n))_n that have poly(n)-sized roABPs such that some irreducible factor of f_n requires roABPs of superpolynomial size in any order. - Non-closure under powering: There is a sequence of polynomials (f_n(x₁,…, x_n))_n with poly(n)-sized roABPs such that any super-constant power of f_n does not have roABPs of polynomial size in any order (and f_nⁿ requires exponential size in any order). - Non-closure under symmetric operations: There are symmetric polynomials (f_n(e₁,…, e_n))_n that have roABPs of polynomial size such that f_n(x₁,…, x_n) do not have roABPs of subexponential size. (Here, e₁,…, e_n denote the elementary symmetric polynomials in n variables.) These results should be viewed in light of known results on models such as algebraic circuits, (general) algebraic branching programs, formulas and constant-depth circuits, all of which are known to be closed under these operations. To prove non-closure under factoring, we construct hard polynomials based on expander graphs using gadgets that lift their hardness from sparse polynomials to roABPs. For symmetric compositions, we show that the circulant polynomial requires roABPs of exponential size in every variable order.

Solving Tasks with Fewer Registers Than Processes

Abstract
This paper studies distributed-computing tasks through the lens of space complexity in the read/write wait-free model, defined as the number of multi-reader-multi-writer atomic read/write registers needed to solve a task using a wait-free algorithm. Surprisingly, even though the read/write wait-free model is at the foundation of distributed computing, previous work on space complexity has focused on synchronization primitives stronger than read/write registers or on weaker progress conditions. The paper reveals that the read/write wait-free model offers a rich space-complexity landscape: (1) assuming non-anonymous processes, it shows that there is an infinite hierarchy of tasks of increasing space complexity; (2) it shows that space complexity separates anonymous from non-anonymous memory; (3) regardless of process or register anonymity, it exhibits a task of space complexity two, which is the minimal non-trivial space complexity; (4) finally, it shows that subcases of the adopt-commit task have different space complexity in non-anonymous memory under bounded wait-freedom.

Improved Elastic Scheduling Algorithms for Implicit-Deadline Tasks

Abstract
Elastic scheduling provides a framework under which the utilizations of recurrent tasks are reduced by increasing their periods in response to system overload. The original elastic scheduling model was proposed by Buttazzo et al. in 1998 for implicit-deadline tasks on a uniprocessor and decreases task utilizations to satisfy a schedulable utilization bound. In 2019, Orr and Baruah extended the framework to multiprocessor scheduling of implicit-deadline tasks. In this paper, we propose, analyze, and evaluate new elastic scheduling algorithms for several of the scheduling policies considered in these prior works. In particular, (i) we evaluate an algorithm that we proposed as a short note in the Real-Time Systems journal and demonstrate that it allows for faster admission control than the algorithm of Buttazzo et al. when applied to uniprocessor and fluid scheduling. (ii) We also present faster elastic scheduling algorithms for partitioned EDF scheduling. Finally, (iii) we provide polynomial-time exact elastic scheduling algorithms for global EDF and global RM.

Supporting Psychometric Instrument Usage Through the POEM Ontology

Abstract
Psychometrics is the field relating to the measurement of concepts within psychology, particularly the assessment of various social and psychological dimensions in humans. The relationship between psychometric entities is critical to finding an appropriate assessment instrument, especially in the context of clinical psychology and mental healthcare in which providing the best care based on empirical evidence is crucial. We aim to model these entities, which include psychometric questionnaires and their component elements, the subject and respondent, and the latent variables being assessed. The current standard for questionnaire-based assessment relies on text-based distributions of instruments; so, a structured representation is necessary to capture these relationships to enhance accessibility and use of existing measures, encourage reuse of questionnaires and their component elements, and enable sophisticated reasoning over assessment instruments and results by increasing interoperability. We present the design process and architecture of such a domain ontology, the Psychometric Ontology of Experiences and Measures, situating it within the context of related ontologies, and demonstrating its practical utility through evaluation against a series of competency questions concerning the creation, use, and reuse of psychometric questionnaires in clinical, research, and development settings.

Mining Inter-Document Argument Structures in Scientific Papers for an Argument Web

Abstract
In Argument Mining, predicting argumentative relations between texts (or spans) remains one of the most challenging aspects, even more so in the cross-document setting. This paper makes three key contributions to advance research in this domain. We first extend an existing dataset, the Sci-Arg corpus, by annotating it with explicit inter-document argumentative relations, thereby allowing arguments to be distributed over several documents forming an Argument Web; these new annotations are published using Semantic Web technologies (RDF, OWL). Second, we explore and evaluate three automated approaches for predicting these inter-document argumentative relations, establishing critical baselines on the new dataset. We find that a simple classifier based on discourse indicators with access to context outperforms neural methods. Third, we conduct a comparative analysis of these approaches for both intra- and inter-document settings, identifying statistically significant differences in results that indicate the necessity of distinguishing between these two scenarios. Our findings highlight significant challenges in this complex domain and open crucial avenues for future research on the Argument Web of Science, particularly for those interested in leveraging Semantic Web technologies and knowledge graphs to understand scholarly discourse. With this, we provide the first stepping stones in the form of a benchmark dataset, three baseline methods, and an initial analysis for a systematic exploration of this field relevant to the Web of Data and Science.

An Almost-Logarithmic Lower Bound for Leader Election with Bounded Value Contention

Abstract
We investigate the step complexity of the Leader Election problem (and implementing the corresponding test-and-set object) in asynchronous shared memory, where processes communicate through registers supporting atomic read and write and must coordinate so that a single process becomes the leader. Determining tight step complexity bounds for solving this problem is one of the key open problems in the theory of shared memory distributed computing. The best known algorithm is a randomized tournament-tree, which has worst-case expected step complexity O(log N) for N processes. There are provably no deterministic wait-free algorithms, and only restricted lower bounds are known for obstruction-free and randomized wait-free algorithms. We introduce a new lower bound that establishes an Ω((log N)/(log log N + log Q)) step complexity for any obstruction-free Leader Election algorithm, where N is the number of processes, and 2 ≤ Q ≤ N is a bound on the value contention, which we define as the maximum number of different values that processes can be simultaneously poised to write to the same register in any execution of the algorithm. Our result is strictly stronger than previous bounds based on write contention. In particular, it implies new lower bounds on step complexity that depend on register size.

Deterministic Synchronous Self-Stabilizing BFS Construction with Constant Space Complexity

Abstract
In this paper, we resolve a long-standing open problem in self-stabilization asking whether it is possible to construct a spanning tree using constant memory per node in a synchronous semi-uniform networks, i.e., networks in which one node is distinguished. We design a synchronous self-stabilizing algorithm that constructs a breadth-first search (BFS) tree in any anonymous semi-uniform network using only a constant number of bits of memory per node. Crucially, our approach operates without any prior knowledge of global network parameters such as maximum degree, diameter, or number of nodes. In contrast to traditional self-stabilizing methods - such as pointer-to-neighbors, distance-to-root, or identifiers - that are unsuitable under strict memory constraints, our solution employs an innovative constant-space token dissemination mechanism. This mechanism effectively eliminates cycles and rectifies errors in the BFS structure, ensuring both correctness and memory efficiency. The proposed algorithm not only meets the stringent requirements of memory-constrained distributed systems, but also opens new avenues for research in the design of self-stabilizing protocols under severe resource limitations: constant space-complexity may not systematically prevent the existence of self-stabilizing algorithms for important non-trivial tasks.

A Research Framework to Develop a Real-Time Synchrony Index to Monitor Team Cohesion and Performance in Long-Duration Space Exploration

Abstract
As humanity prepares for long-distance space exploration, optimizing group performance, the ability of a group to achieve its goals efficiently, is critical. Astronaut crews will endure isolation, confinement, and operational stress, making group synchrony - the alignment of behaviors, emotions, and physiological states - a key factor in mission success. Synchrony influences team cohesion, performance, and resilience, necessitating effective crew management strategies. This paper proposes a framework for a real-time, unobtrusive index of group synchrony to support astronauts and mission control. Research indicates that team cohesion fluctuates in isolated environments, with reduced communication and interpersonal conflicts emerging over time. A system tracking synchrony could mitigate these issues, providing proactive support and improving remote management. Additionally, it could serve as a cognitive and physiological feedback tool for astronauts and a decision-making aid for mission control, enhancing well-being and efficiency. Our approach integrates behavioral and physiological synchrony measures to assess team cohesion and performance. We propose a multi-modal synchrony index combining movement coordination, communication patterns, and physiological signals such as heart rate, electrodermal activity, and EEG. This index will be validated across different tasks to ensure applicability across diverse mission scenarios. By developing a robust synchrony index, we address a fundamental challenge in space missions: sustaining team effectiveness under extreme conditions. Beyond space exploration, our findings could benefit high-risk, high-isolation teams in submarine crews, polar expeditions, and remote research groups. Our collaboration with the Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales, the Institut de Médecine et de Physiologie Spatiales, and the Toulouse University Hospital marks the first step, with experimental data collection starting this year. Ultimately, this research fosters more adaptive, responsive, and resilient teams for future space missions.

Towards Passively Actuated Short-Range Telehaptics for Astronauts

Abstract
Human extra-vehicular activity (EVA) plays a vital role in current and near future space exploration for two reasons: the superior dexterity exhibited by human astronauts, and their flexible problem-solving and decision-making capabilities. However, the dexterity of astronauts during EVA is limited by the flexibility and tactility of their EVA suit gloves, which are primarily designed to provide thermal insulation and pressure for the hand. This creates a compromise between utility and protection. To address this compromise, a Passively Actuated Short-range Telehaptic (PAST) device is proposed. The PAST device couples the motion of fingers between a robotic hand and a human hand through a hydraulically actuated linkage. It also transfers tactile information, including pressure, direction of motion, and position of contact, via a taxel array. Results demonstrate that the proposed prototype PAST device surpasses an unpressurised benchmark heavy work glove (HWG) in tasks involving tactile position and motion direction identification. This provides evidence supporting the feasibility of enhancing astronaut dexterity during EVA through the use of PAST devices as an alternative paradigm to gloves.

Reachability in Deletion-Only Chemical Reaction Networks

Abstract
For general discrete Chemical Reaction Networks (CRNs), the fundamental problem of reachability - the question of whether a target configuration can be produced from a given initial configuration - was recently shown to be Ackermann-complete. However, many open questions remain about which features of the CRN model drive this complexity. We study a restricted class of CRNs with void rules, reactions that only decrease species counts. We further examine this regime in the motivated model of step CRNs, which allow additional species to be introduced in discrete stages. With and without steps, we characterize the complexity of the reachability problem for CRNs with void rules. We show that, without steps, reachability remains polynomial-time solvable for bimolecular systems but becomes NP-complete for larger reactions. Conversely, with just a single step, reachability becomes NP-complete even for bimolecular systems. Our results provide a nearly complete classification of void-rule reachability problems into tractable and intractable cases, with only a single exception.

Just Verification of Mutual Exclusion Algorithms

Abstract
We verify the correctness of a variety of mutual exclusion algorithms through model checking. We look at algorithms where communication is via shared read/write registers, where those registers can be atomic or non-atomic. For the verification of liveness properties, it is necessary to assume a completeness criterion to eliminate spurious counterexamples. We use justness as completeness criterion. Justness depends on a concurrency relation; we consider several such relations, modelling different assumptions on the working of the shared registers. We present executions demonstrating the violation of correctness properties by several algorithms, and in some cases suggest improvements.

DiVerG: Scalable Distance Index for Validation of Paired-End Alignments in Sequence Graphs

Abstract
Determining the distance between two loci within a genomic region is a recurrent operation in various tasks in computational genomics. A notable example of this task arises in paired-end read mapping as a form of validation of distances between multiple alignments. While straightforward for a single genome, graph-based reference structures render the operation considerably more involved. Given the sheer number of such queries in a typical read mapping experiment, an efficient algorithm for answering distance queries is crucial. In this paper, we introduce DiVerG, a compact data structure as well as a fast and scalable algorithm, for constructing distance indexes for general sequence graphs on multi-core CPU and many-core GPU architectures. DiVerG is based on PairG [Jain et al., 2019], but overcomes the limitations of PairG by exploiting the extensive potential for improvements in terms of scalability and space efficiency. As a consequence, DiVerG can process substantially larger datasets, such as whole human genomes, which are unmanageable by PairG. DiVerG offers faster index construction time and consistently faster query time with gains proportional to the size of the underlying compact data structure. We demonstrate that our method performs favorably on multiple real datasets at various scales. DiVerG achieves superior performance over PairG; e.g. resulting to 2.5-4x speed-up in query time, 44-340x smaller index size, and 3-50x faster construction time for the genome graph of the MHC region, as a particularly variable region of the human genome. Multi-Objective Memory Bandwidth Regulation and Cache Partitioning for Multicore Real-Time Systems

Abstract
Memory bandwidth regulation and cache partitioning are widely used techniques for achieving predictable timing in real-time computing systems. Combined with partitioned scheduling, these methods require careful co-allocation of tasks and resources to cores, as task execution times strongly depend on available allocated resources. To address this challenge, this paper presents a 0-1 linear program for task-resource co-allocation, along with a multi-objective heuristic designed to minimize resource usage while guaranteeing schedulability under a preemptive EDF scheduling policy. Our heuristic employs a multi-layer framework, where an outer layer explores resource allocations using Pareto-pruned search, and an inner layer optimizes task allocation by solving a knapsack problem using dynamic programming. To evaluate the performance of the proposed optimization algorithm, we profile real-world benchmarks on an embedded AMD UltraScale+ ZCU102 platform, with fine-grained resource partitioning enabled by the Jailhouse hypervisor, leveraging cache set partitioning and MemGuard for memory bandwidth regulation. Experiments based on the benchmarking results show that the proposed 0-1 linear program outperforms existing mixed-integer programs by finding more optimal solutions within the same time limit. Moreover, the proposed multi-objective multi-layer heuristic performs consistently better than the state-of-the-art multi-resource-task co-allocation algorithm in terms of schedulability, resource usage, number of non-dominated solutions, and computational efficiency.

Enabling Containerisation of Distributed Applications with Real-Time Constraints

Abstract
Containerisation is becoming a cornerstone of modern distributed systems, thanks to their lightweight virtualisation, high portability, and seamless integration with orchestration tools such as Kubernetes. The usage of containers has also gained traction in real-time cyber-physical systems, such as software-defined vehicles, which are characterised by strict timing requirements to ensure safety and performance. Nevertheless, ensuring real-time execution of co-located containers is challenging because of mutual interference due to the sharing of the same processing hardware. Existing parallel computing frameworks such as Ray and its Kubernetes-enabled variant, KubeRay, excel in distributed computation but lack support for scheduling policies that allow guaranteeing real-time timing constraints and CPU resource isolation between containers, such as the SCHED_DEADLINE policy of Linux. To fill this gap, this paper extends Ray to support real-time containers that leverage SCHED_DEADLINE. To this end, we propose KubeDeadline, a novel, modular Kubernetes extension to support SCHED_DEADLINE. We evaluate our approach through extensive experiments, using synthetic workloads and a case study based on the MobileNet and EfficientNet deep neural networks. Our evaluation shows that KubeDeadline ensures deadline compliance in all synthetic workloads, adds minimal deployment overhead (in the order of milliseconds), and achieves lower worst-case response times, up to 4 times lower, than vanilla Kubernetes under background interference.
