On the Satisfiability of Random 3-SAT Formulas with k-Wise Independent Clauses

Abstract
The problem of identifying the satisfiability threshold of random 3-SAT formulas has received a lot of attention during the last decades and has inspired the study of other threshold phenomena in random combinatorial structures. The classical assumption in this line of research is that, for a given set of n Boolean variables, each clause is drawn uniformly at random among all sets of three literals from these variables, independently from other clauses. Here, we keep the uniform distribution of each clause, but deviate significantly from the independence assumption and consider richer families of probability distributions. For integer parameters n, m, and k, we denote by ℱ_k(n,m) the family of probability distributions that produce formulas with m clauses, each selected uniformly at random from all sets of three literals from the n variables, so that the clauses are k-wise independent. Our aim is to make general statements about the satisfiability or unsatisfiability of formulas produced by distributions in ℱ_k(n,m) for different values of the parameters n, m, and k. Our technical results are as follows: First, all probability distributions in ℱ₂(n,m) with m ∈ Ω(n³) return unsatisfiable formulas with high probability. This result is tight. We show that there exists a probability distribution 𝒟 ∈ ℱ₃(n,m) with m ∈ O(n³) so that a random formula drawn from 𝒟 is almost always satisfiable. In contrast, for m ∈ Ω(n²), any probability distribution 𝒟 ∈ ℱ₄(n,m) returns an unsatisfiable formula with high probability. This is our most surprising and technically involved result. Finally, for any integer k ≥ 2, any probability distribution 𝒟 ∈ ℱ_k(n,m) with m ∈ O(n^{1-1/k}) returns a satisfiable formula with high probability.

Toward an Earth-Independent System for EVA Mission Planning: Integrating Physical Models, Domain Knowledge, and Agentic RAG to Provide Explainable LLM-Based Decision Support

Abstract
We propose a unified framework for an Earth‑independent AI system that provides explainable, context‑aware decision support for EVA mission planning by integrating six core components: a fine‑tuned EVA domain LLM, a retrieval‑augmented knowledge base, a short-term memory store, physical simulation models, an agentic orchestration layer, and a multimodal user interface. To ground our design, we analyze the current roles and substitution potential of the Mission Control Center - identifying which procedural and analytical functions can be automated onboard while preserving human oversight for experiential and strategic tasks. Building on this framework, we introduce RASAGE (Retrieval & Simulation Augmented Guidance Agent for Exploration), a proof‑of‑concept toolset that combines Microsoft Phi‑4‑mini‑instruct with a FAISS (Facebook AI Similarity Search)‑powered EVA knowledge base and custom A* path planning and hypogravity metabolic models to generate grounded, traceable EVA plans. We outline a staged validation strategy to evaluate improvements in route efficiency, metabolic prediction accuracy, anomaly response effectiveness, and crew trust under realistic communication delays. Our findings demonstrate the feasibility of replicating key Mission Control functions onboard, enhancing crew autonomy, reducing cognitive load, and improving safety for deep‑space exploration missions.

Algorithmic Contiguity from Low-Degree Conjecture and Applications in Correlated Random Graphs

Abstract
In this paper, assuming a natural strengthening of the low-degree conjecture, we provide evidence of computational hardness for two problems: (1) the (partial) matching recovery problem in the sparse correlated Erdős-Rényi graphs G(n,q;ρ) when the edge-density q = n^{-1+o(1)} and the correlation ρ < √{α} lies below the Otter’s threshold, this resolves a remaining problem in [Jian Ding et al., 2023]; (2) the detection problem between a pair of correlated sparse stochastic block model S(n,λ/n;k,ε;s) and a pair of independent stochastic block models S(n,λs/n;k,ε) when ε² λ s < 1 lies below the Kesten-Stigum (KS) threshold and s < √α lies below the Otter’s threshold, this resolves a remaining problem in [Guanyi Chen et al., 2024]. One of the main ingredient in our proof is to derive certain forms of algorithmic contiguity between two probability measures based on bounds on their low-degree advantage. To be more precise, consider the high-dimensional hypothesis testing problem between two probability measures ℙ and ℚ based on the sample Y. We show that if the low-degree advantage Adv_{≤D}(dℙ/dℚ) = O(1), then (assuming the low-degree conjecture) there is no efficient algorithm A such that ℚ(A(Y) = 0) = 1-o(1) and ℙ(A(Y) = 1) = Ω(1). This framework provides a useful tool for performing reductions between different inference tasks.

DiVerG: Scalable Distance Index for Validation of Paired-End Alignments in Sequence Graphs

Abstract
Determining the distance between two loci within a genomic region is a recurrent operation in various tasks in computational genomics. A notable example of this task arises in paired-end read mapping as a form of validation of distances between multiple alignments. While straightforward for a single genome, graph-based reference structures render the operation considerably more involved. Given the sheer number of such queries in a typical read mapping experiment, an efficient algorithm for answering distance queries is crucial. In this paper, we introduce DiVerG, a compact data structure as well as a fast and scalable algorithm, for constructing distance indexes for general sequence graphs on multi-core CPU and many-core GPU architectures. DiVerG is based on PairG [Jain et al., 2019], but overcomes the limitations of PairG by exploiting the extensive potential for improvements in terms of scalability and space efficiency. As a consequence, DiVerG can process substantially larger datasets, such as whole human genomes, which are unmanageable by PairG. DiVerG offers faster index construction time and consistently faster query time with gains proportional to the size of the underlying compact data structure. We demonstrate that our method performs favorably on multiple real datasets at various scales. DiVerG achieves superior performance over PairG; e.g. resulting to 2.5-4x speed-up in query time, 44-340x smaller index size, and 3-50x faster construction time for the genome graph of the MHC region, as a particularly variable region of the human genome. Uncertainty Management in the Construction of Knowledge Graphs: A Survey

Abstract
Knowledge Graphs (KGs) are a major asset for companies thanks to their great flexibility in data representation and their numerous applications, e.g., vocabulary sharing, Q&A or recommendation systems. To build a KG, it is a common practice to rely on automatic methods for extracting knowledge from various heterogeneous sources. However, in a noisy and uncertain world, knowledge may not be reliable and conflicts between data sources may occur. Integrating unreliable data would directly impact the use of the KG, therefore such conflicts must be resolved. This could be done manually by selecting the best data to integrate. This first approach is highly accurate, but costly and time-consuming. That is why recent efforts focus on automatic approaches, which represent a challenging task since it requires handling the uncertainty of extracted knowledge throughout its integration into the KG. We survey state-of-the-art approaches in this direction and present constructions of both open and enterprise KGs. We then describe different knowledge extraction methods and discuss downstream tasks after knowledge acquisition, including KG completion using embedding models, knowledge alignment, and knowledge fusion in order to address the problem of knowledge uncertainty in KG construction. We conclude with a discussion on the remaining challenges and perspectives when constructing a KG taking into account uncertainty.

Exact Algorithms for Minimum Dilation Triangulation

Abstract
We provide a spectrum of new theoretical insights and practical results for finding a Minimum Dilation Triangulation (MDT), a natural geometric optimization problem of considerable previous attention: Given a set P of n points in the plane, find a triangulation T, such that a shortest Euclidean path in T between any pair of points increases by the smallest possible factor compared to their straight-line distance. No polynomial-time algorithm is known for the problem; moreover, evaluating the objective function involves computing the sum of (possibly many) square roots. On the other hand, the problem is not known to be NP-hard. (1) We provide practically robust methods and implementations for computing an MDT for benchmark sets with up to 30,000 points in reasonable time on commodity hardware, based on new geometric insights into the structure of optimal edge sets. Previous methods only achieved results for up to 200 points, so we extend the range of optimally solvable instances by a factor of 150. (2) We develop scalable techniques for accurately evaluating many shortest-path queries that arise as large-scale sums of square roots, allowing us to certify exact optimal solutions, with previous work relying on (possibly inaccurate) floating-point computations. (3) We resolve an open problem by establishing a lower bound of 1.44116 on the dilation of the regular 84-gon (and thus for arbitrary point sets), improving the previous worst-case lower bound of 1.4308 and greatly reducing the remaining gap to the upper bound of 1.4482 from the literature. In the process, we provide optimal solutions for regular n-gons up to n = 100.

Abstract
Large Language Models (LLMs) have taken Knowledge Representation - and the world - by storm. This inflection point marks a shift from explicit knowledge representation to a renewed focus on the hybrid representation of both explicit knowledge and parametric knowledge. In this position paper, we will discuss some of the common debate points within the community on LLMs (parametric knowledge) and Knowledge Graphs (explicit knowledge) and speculate on opportunities and visions that the renewed focus brings, as well as related research topics and challenges.

Machine Learning and Knowledge Graphs: Existing Gaps and Future Research Challenges

Abstract
The graph model is nowadays largely adopted to model a wide range of knowledge and data, spanning from social networks to knowledge graphs (KGs), representing a successful paradigm of how symbolic and transparent AI can scale on the World Wide Web. However, due to their unprecedented volume, they are generally tackled by Machine Learning (ML) and mostly numeric based methods such as graph embedding models (KGE) and deep neural networks (DNNs). The latter methods have been proved lately very efficient, leading the current AI spring. In this vision paper, we introduce some of the main existing methods for combining KGs and ML, divided into two categories: those using ML to improve KGs, and those using KGs to improve results on ML tasks. From this introduction, we highlight research gaps and perspectives that we deem promising and currently under-explored for the involved research communities, spanning from KG support for LLM prompting, integration of KG semantics in ML models to symbol-based methods, interpretability of ML models, and the need for improved benchmark datasets. In our opinion, such perspectives are stepping stones in an ultimate view of KGs as central assets for neuro-symbolic and explainable AI.

Abstract
Knowledge Graphs (KGs) have emerged as fundamental platforms for powering intelligent decision-making and a wide range of Artificial Intelligence (AI) services across major corporations such as Google, Walmart, and AirBnb. KGs complement Machine Learning (ML) algorithms by providing data context and semantics, thereby enabling further inference and question-answering capabilities. The integration of KGs with neuronal learning (e.g., Large Language Models (LLMs)) is currently a topic of active research, commonly named neuro-symbolic AI. Despite the numerous benefits that can be accomplished with KG-based AI, its growing ubiquity within online services may result in the loss of self-determination for citizens as a fundamental societal issue. The more we rely on these technologies, which are often centralised, the less citizens will be able to determine their own destinies. To counter this threat, AI regulation, such as the European Union (EU) AI Act, is being proposed in certain regions. The regulation sets what technologists need to do, leading to questions concerning How the output of AI systems can be trusted? What is needed to ensure that the data fuelling and the inner workings of these artefacts are transparent? How can AI be made accountable for its decision-making? This paper conceptualises the foundational topics and research pillars to support KG-based AI for self-determination. Drawing upon this conceptual framework, challenges and opportunities for citizen self-determination are illustrated and analysed in a real-world scenario. As a result, we propose a research agenda aimed at accomplishing the recommended objectives.

Structural Summarization of Semantic Graphs Using Quotients

Abstract
Graph summarization is the process of computing a compact version of an input graph while preserving chosen features of its structure. We consider semantic graphs where the features include edge labels and label sets associated with a vertex. Graph summaries are typically much smaller than the original graph. Applications that depend on the preserved features can perform their tasks on the summary, but much faster or with less memory overhead, while producing the same outcome as if they were applied on the original graph. In this survey, we focus on structural summaries based on quotients that organize vertices in equivalence classes of shared features. Structural summaries are particularly popular for semantic graphs and have the advantage of defining a precise graph-based output. We consider approaches and algorithms for both static and temporal graphs. A common example of quotient-based structural summaries is bisimulation, and we discuss this in detail. While there exist other surveys on graph summarization, to the best of our knowledge, we are the first to bring in a focused discussion on quotients, bisimulation, and their relation. Furthermore, structural summarization naturally connects well with formal logic due to the discrete structures considered. We complete the survey with a brief description of approaches beyond structural summaries.

Agnostically Learning Boolean Functions with Finite Polynomial Representation

Abstract
Agnostic learning is an extremely hard task in computational learning theory. In this paper we revisit the results in [Kalai et al. SIAM J. Comput. 2008] on agnostically learning boolean functions with finite polynomial representation and those that can be approximated by the former. An example of the former is the class of all boolean low-degree polynomials. For the former, [Kalai et al. SIAM J. Comput. 2008] introduces the l_1-polynomial regression method to learn them to error opt+epsilon. We present a simple instantiation for one step in the method and accordingly give the analysis. Moreover, we show that even ignoring this step can bring a learning result of error 2opt+epsilon as well. Then we consider applying the result for learning concept classes that can be approximated by the former to learn richer specific classes. Our result is that the class of s-term DNF formulae can be agnostically learned to error opt+epsilon with respect to arbitrary distributions for any epsilon in time poly(n^d, 1/epsilon), where d=O(\sqrt{n}\cdot s\cdot \log s\log^2(1/epsilon)).

Utility-Based Scheduling of (m,k)-firm Real-Time Tasks - New Empirical Results

Abstract
The concept of a firm real-time task implies the notion of a firm deadline that should not be missed by the jobs of this task. If a deadline miss occurs, the concerned job yields no value to the system. For some applications domains, this restrictive notion can be relaxed. For example, robust control systems can tolerate that single executions of a control loop miss their deadlines, and still yield an acceptable behaviour. Thus, systems can be developed under more optimistic assumptions, e.g. by allowing overloads. However, care must be taken that deadline misses do not accumulate. This restriction can be expressed by the model of (m,k)-firm real-time tasks that require that from any k consecutive jobs at least m are executed successfully. In this article, we extend our prior work on the MKU scheduling heuristic. MKU uses history-cognisant utility functions as means for making decisions in overload situations. We present new theoretical results on MKU and on other schedulers for (m,k)-firm real-time tasks. Based on extensive simulations, we assess the performance of these schedulers. The results allow us to identify task set characteristics that can be used as guidelines for choosing a scheduler for a concrete use case.
