How Many Slopes Does Polynomial Area Cost?

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 370, 20th Scandinavian Symposium on Algorithm Theory (SWAT 2026)

Abstract
In this work, we study the interplay between the number of slopes, the number of bends per edge, and the area requirements for planar drawings of bounded-degree graphs. Our motivation stems from the fact that, while numerous algorithms produce planar drawings with few slopes for graphs of relatively small degree in polynomial area, existing approaches for higher-degree graphs often require super-polynomial area. We address this gap in the literature by presenting new constructions that yield polynomial-area drawings with few bends per edge while slightly increasing the required number of slopes, thereby providing the first systematic study of slopes, bends and area trade-offs.

Abstract
A Euclidean noncrossing Steiner (1+ε)-spanner for a point set P ⊂ ℝ² is a planar straight-line graph that, for any two points a, b ∈ P, contains a path whose length is at most 1+ε times the Euclidean distance between a and b. We construct a Euclidean noncrossing Steiner (1+ε)-spanner with O(n/ε^{3/2}) edges for any set of n points in the plane. This result improves upon the previous best upper bound of O(n/ε⁴) obtained nearly three decades ago. We also establish an almost matching lower bound: There exist n points in the plane for which any Euclidean noncrossing Steiner (1+ε)-spanner has Ω_μ(n/ε^{3/2-μ}) edges for any μ > 0. Our lower bound uses recent generalizations of the Szemerédi-Trotter theorem to disk-tube incidences in geometric measure theory.

Dynamic Light Spanners in Doubling Metrics

Authors: Sujoy Bhore, Jonathan Conroy, and Arnold Filtser

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 367, 42nd International Symposium on Computational Geometry (SoCG 2026)

Abstract
A t-spanner of a point set X in a metric space (𝒳, δ) is a graph G with vertex set P such that, for any pair of points u,v ∈ X, the distance between u and v in G is at most t times δ(u,v). We study the problem of maintaining a spanner for a dynamic point set X - that is, when X undergoes a sequence of insertions and deletions - in a metric space of constant doubling dimension. For any constant ε > 0, we maintain a (1+ε)-spanner of P whose total weight remains within a constant factor of the weight of the minimum spanning tree of X. Each update (insertion or deletion) can be performed in poly(log Φ) time, where Φ denotes the aspect ratio of X. Prior to our work, no efficient dynamic algorithm for maintaining a light-weight spanner was known even for point sets in low-dimensional Euclidean space.

On the Maximum Number of Tangencies Among 1-Intersecting Curves

Authors: Eyal Ackerman and Balázs Keszegh

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 367, 42nd International Symposium on Computational Geometry (SoCG 2026)

Abstract
According to a conjecture of Pach, there are O(n) tangent pairs among any family of n Jordan arcs in which every pair of arcs has precisely one common point and no three arcs share a common point. This conjecture was proved for two special cases, however, for the general case the currently best upper bound is only O(n^{7/4}). This is also the best known bound on the number of tangencies in the relaxed case where every pair of arcs has at most one common point. We improve the bounds for the latter and former cases to O(n^{5/3}) and O(n^{3/2}), respectively. We also consider a few other variants of these questions, for example, we show that if the arcs are x-monotone, each pair intersects at most once and their left endpoints lie on a common vertical line, then the maximum number of tangencies is Θ(n^{4/3}). Without this last condition the number of tangencies is O(n^{4/3}(log n)^{1/3}), improving a previous bound of Pach and Sharir. Along the way we prove a graph-theoretic theorem which extends a result of Erdős and Simonovits and may be of independent interest.

Single-Criteria Metric r-Dominating Set Problem via Minor-Preserving Support

Authors: Reilly Browne and Hsien-Chih Chang

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 367, 42nd International Symposium on Computational Geometry (SoCG 2026)

Abstract
Given an unweighted graph G, the minimum r-dominating set problem asks for a subset of vertices S of the smallest cardinality, such that every vertex in G is within radius r to some vertex in S. While the r-dominating set problem on planar graph admits PTAS from Baker’s shifting/layering technique when r is a constant, the problem becomes significantly harder when r can depend on n. In fact, under Exponential-Time Hypothesis, Fox-Epstein ηl [SODA 2019] observed that no efficient PTAS can exist for the unbounded r-dominating set problem on planar graphs. One may consider even harder weighted-variant known as the vertex-weighted metric r-dominating set, where edges are associated with lengths, and every vertex is associated with a positive-valued weight, and the goal is to compute an r-dominating set with minimum total weight. As a result, people resorted to bicriteria algorithms by allowing the returned solution to use radius-(1+ε)r balls instead, in addition to the total weight being a 1+ε approximation to the optimal value. We establish the first single-criteria polynomial-time O(1)-approximation algorithm for the vertex-weighted metric r-dominating set problem on planar graphs when r is part of the input, and can be arbitrarily large compared to n. Our new (single-criteria) O(1)-approximation algorithm uses the quasi-uniformity sampling technique of Chan et al. [SODA 2012] by bounding the shallow cell complexity of the (unbounded) radius-r ball system to be linear in n. To this end we have two technical innovations: 1) The discrete ball system on planar graphs are neither pseudodisks nor have well-defined boundaries for standard union-complexity arguments. We construct a support graph for arbitrary distance ball systems as contractions of Voronoi cells; the sparseness comes as a byproduct. 2) We present an assignment of each depth-(≥3) cell to a unique 3-tuple of ball centers. This allows us to use standard Clarkson-Shor techniques to reduce the counting to cells of depth exactly 3, which we prove to be size O(n) by a novel geometric argument based on our support being a Voronoi contraction.

Unavoidable Patterns and Plane Paths in Dense Topological Graphs

Authors: Balázs Keszegh, Andrew Suk, Gábor Tardos, and Ji Zeng

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 367, 42nd International Symposium on Computational Geometry (SoCG 2026)

Abstract
Let C_{s,t} be the complete bipartite geometric graph, with s and t vertices on two distinct parallel lines respectively, and all s t straight-line edges drawn between them. In this paper, we show that every complete bipartite simple topological graph, with parts of size 2(k-1)⁴ + 1 and 2^{k^{5k}}, contains a topological subgraph weakly isomorphic to C_{k,k}. As a corollary, every n-vertex simple topological graph not containing a plane path of length k has at most O_k(n^{2 - 8/k⁴}) edges. When k = 3, we obtain a stronger bound by showing that every n-vertex simple topological graph not containing a plane path of length 3 has at most O(n^{4/3}) edges. We also prove that x-monotone simple topological graphs not containing a plane path of length 3 have at most a linear number of edges.

Near-Optimal Dynamic Steiner Spanners for Constant-Curvature Spaces

Authors: Sándor Kisfaludi-Bak and Geert van Wordragen

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 367, 42nd International Symposium on Computational Geometry (SoCG 2026)

Abstract
We consider Steiner spanners in Euclidean and non-Euclidean geometries. In the Euclidean setting, a recent line of work initiated by Le and Solomon [FOCS'19] and further improved by Chang et al. [SoCG'24] obtained Steiner (1+ε)-spanners of size O_d(ε^{(1-d)/2} log(1/ε) n), nearly matching the lower bound Ω_d(ε^{(1-d)/2} n) of Bhore and Tóth [SIDMA'22]. We obtain Steiner (1+ε)-spanners of size O_d(ε^{(1-d)/2} log(1/ε)n) not only in d-dimensional Euclidean space, but also in d-dimensional spherical and hyperbolic space. For any fixed dimension d, the obtained edge count is optimal up to an O(log(1/ε)) factor in each of these spaces. Unlike earlier constructions, our Steiner spanners are based on simple quadtrees, and they can be dynamically maintained, leading to efficient data structures for dynamic approximate nearest neighbours and bichromatic closest pair. In the hyperbolic setting, we also show that 2-spanners in the hyperbolic plane must have Ω(nlog n) edges, and we obtain a 2-spanner of size O_d(nlog n) in d-dimensional hyperbolic space, matching our lower bound for any constant d. Finally, we give a Steiner spanner with additive error ε in hyperbolic space with O_d(ε^{(1-d)/2} log(α(n)/ε)n) edges, where α(n) is the inverse Ackermann function. Our techniques generalize to closed orientable surfaces of constant curvature as well as to some other quotient spaces.

Edge Densities of Drawings of Graphs with One Forbidden Cell

Authors: Benedikt Hahn, Torsten Ueckerdt, and Birgit Vogtenhuber

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 357, 33rd International Symposium on Graph Drawing and Network Visualization (GD 2025)

Abstract
A connected topological drawing of a graph divides the plane into a number of cells. The type of a cell c is the cyclic sequence of crossings and vertices along the boundary walk of c. For example, all triangular cells with three incident crossings and no incident vertex share the same cell type. When a non-homotopic drawing of an n-vertex multigraph G does not contain any such cells, Ackerman and Tardos [JCTA 2007] proved that G has at most 8n-20 edges, while Kaufmann, Klemz, Knorr, Reddy, Schröder, and Ueckerdt [GD 2024] showed that this bound is tight. In this paper, we initiate the in-depth study of non-homotopic drawings that do not contain one fixed cell type 𝔠, and investigate the edge density of the corresponding multigraphs, i.e., the maximum possible number of edges. We consider non-homotopic as well as simple drawings, multigraphs as well as simple graphs, and every possible type of cell. For every combination of drawing style, graph type, and cell type, we give upper and lower bounds on the corresponding edge density. With the exception of the cell type with four incident crossings and no incident vertex, we show for every cell type 𝔠 that the edge density of n-vertex (multi)graphs with 𝔠-free drawings is either quadratic in n or linear in n. In most cases, our bounds are tight up to an additive constant. Additionally, we improve the current lower bound on the edge density of simple graphs that admit a non-homotopic quasiplanar drawing from 7n-28 to 7.5n-28.

An Improved Bound for Plane Covering Paths

Abstract
A covering path for a finite set P of points in the plane is a polygonal path such that every point of P lies on a segment of the path. The vertices of the path need not be at points of P. A covering path is plane if its segments do not cross each other. Let π(n) be the minimum number such that every set of n points in the plane admits a plane covering path with at most π(n) segments. We prove that π(n) ≤ ⌈6n/7⌉. This improves the previous best-known upper bound of ⌈21n/22⌉, due to Biniaz (SoCG 2023). Our proof is constructive and yields a simple O(n log n)-time algorithm for computing a plane covering path.

Compact Representation of Semilinear and Terrain-Like Graphs

Authors: Jean Cardinal and Yelena Yuditsky

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 351, 33rd Annual European Symposium on Algorithms (ESA 2025)

Abstract
We consider the existence and construction of biclique covers of graphs, consisting of coverings of their edge sets by complete bipartite graphs. The size of such a cover is the sum of the sizes of the bicliques. Small-size biclique covers of graphs are ubiquitous in computational geometry, and have been shown to be useful compact representations of graphs. We give a brief survey of classical and recent results on biclique covers and their applications, and give new families of graphs having biclique covers of near-linear size. In particular, we show that semilinear graphs, whose edges are defined by linear relations in bounded dimensional space, always have biclique covers of size O(npolylog n). This generalizes many previously known results on special classes of graphs including interval graphs, permutation graphs, and graphs of bounded boxicity, but also new classes such as intersection graphs of L-shapes in the plane. It also directly implies the bounds for Zarankiewicz’s problem derived by Basit, Chernikov, Starchenko, Tao, and Tran (Forum Math. Sigma, 2021). We also consider capped graphs, also known as terrain-like graphs, defined as ordered graphs forbidding a certain ordered pattern on four vertices. Terrain-like graphs contain the induced subgraphs of terrain visibility graphs. We give an elementary proof that these graphs admit biclique partitions of size O(nlog³ n). This provides a simple combinatorial analogue of a classical result from Agarwal, Alon, Aronov, and Suri on polygon visibility graphs (Discrete Comput. Geom. 1994). Finally, we prove that there exists families of unit disk graphs on n vertices that do not admit biclique coverings of size o(n^{4/3}), showing that we are unlikely to improve on Szemerédi-Trotter type incidence bounds for higher-degree semialgebraic graphs.

Light Spanners with Small Hop-Diameter

Authors: Sujoy Bhore and Lazar Milenković

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 334, 52nd International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2025)

Abstract
Lightness, sparsity, and hop-diameter are the fundamental parameters of geometric spanners. Arya et al. [STOC'95] showed in their seminal work that there exists a construction of Euclidean (1+ε)-spanners with hop-diameter O(log n) and lightness O(log n). They also gave a general tradeoff of hop-diameter k and sparsity O(α_k(n)), where α_k is a very slowly growing inverse of an Ackermann-style function. The former combination of logarithmic hop-diameter and lightness is optimal due to the lower bound by Dinitz et al. [FOCS'08]. Later, Elkin and Solomon [STOC'13] generalized the light spanner construction to doubling metrics and extended the tradeoff for more values of hop-diameter k. In a recent line of work [SoCG'22, SoCG'23], Le et al. proved that the aforementioned tradeoff between the hop-diameter and sparsity is tight for every choice of hop-diameter k. A fundamental question remains: What is the optimal tradeoff between the hop-diameter and lightness for every value of k? In this paper, we present a general framework for constructing light spanners with small hop-diameter. Our framework is based on tree covers. In particular, we show that if a metric admits a tree cover with γ trees, stretch t, and lightness L, then it also admits a t-spanner with hop-diameter k and lightness O(kn^{2/k}⋅ γ L). Further, we note that the tradeoff for trees is tight due to a construction in uniform line metric, which is perhaps the simplest tree metric. As a direct consequence of this framework, we obtain new tradeoffs between lightness and hop-diameter for doubling metrics.

Pushing the Frontiers of Subexponential FPT Time for Feedback Vertex Set

Authors: Gaétan Berthe, Marin Bougeret, Daniel Gonçalves, and Jean-Florent Raymond

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 334, 52nd International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2025)

Abstract
The paper deals with the Feedback Vertex Set problem parameterized by the solution size. Given a graph G and a parameter k, one has to decide if there is a set S of at most k vertices such that G-S is acyclic. Assuming the Exponential Time Hypothesis, it is known that FVS cannot be solved in time 2^{o(k)}n^{𝒪(1)} in general graphs. To overcome this, many recent results considered FVS restricted to particular intersection graph classes and provided such 2^{o(k)}n^{𝒪(1)} algorithms. In this paper we provide generic conditions on a graph class for the existence of an algorithm solving FVS in subexponential FPT time, i.e. time 2^k^ε poly(n), for some ε < 1, where n denotes the number of vertices of the instance and k the parameter. On the one hand this result unifies algorithms that have been proposed over the years for several graph classes such as planar graphs, map graphs, unit-disk graphs, pseudo-disk graphs, and string graphs of bounded edge-degree. On the other hand it extends the tractability horizon of FVS to new classes that are not amenable to previously used techniques, in particular intersection graphs of "thin" objects like segment graphs or more generally s-string graphs.

Complexity of Approximate Conflict-Free, Linearly-Ordered, and Nonmonochromatic Hypergraph Colourings

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 334, 52nd International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2025)

Abstract
Using the algebraic approach to promise constraint satisfaction problems, we establish complexity classifications of three natural variants of hypergraph colourings: standard nonmonochromatic colourings, conflict-free colourings, and linearly-ordered colourings. Firstly, we show that finding an 𝓁-colouring of a k-colourable r-uniform hypergraph is NP-hard for all constant 2 ≤ k ≤ 𝓁 and r ≥ 3. This provides a shorter proof of a celebrated result by Dinur et al. [FOCS'02/Combinatorica'05]. Secondly, we show that finding an 𝓁-conflict-free colouring of an r-uniform hypergraph that admits a k-conflict-free colouring is NP-hard for all constant 2 ≤ k ≤ 𝓁 and r ≥ 4, except for r = 4 and k = 2 (and any 𝓁); this case is solvable in polynomial time. The case of r = 3 is the standard nonmonochromatic colouring, and the case of r = 2 is the notoriously difficult open problem of approximate graph colouring. Thirdly, we show that finding an 𝓁-linearly-ordered colouring of an r-uniform hypergraph that admits a k-linearly-ordered colouring is NP-hard for all constant 3 ≤ k ≤ 𝓁 and r ≥ 4, thus improving on the results of Nakajima and Živný [ICALP'22/ACM TocT'23].

Polychromatic Coloring of Tuples in Hypergraphs

Abstract
A hypergraph H consists of a set V of vertices and a set E of hyperedges that are subsets of V. A t-tuple of H is a subset of t vertices of V. A t-tuple k-coloring of H is a mapping of its t-tuples into k colors. A coloring is called (t,k,f)-polychromatic if each hyperedge of E that has at least f vertices contains tuples of all the k colors. Let f_H(t,k) be the minimum f such that H has a (t,k,f)-polychromatic coloring. For a family of hypergraphs ℋ let f_H(t,k) be the maximum f_H(t,k) over all hypergraphs H in H. Determining f_H(t,k) has been an active research direction in recent years. This is challenging even for t = 1. We present several new results in this direction for t ≥ 2. - Let H be the family of hypergraphs H that is obtained by taking any set P of points in ℝ², setting V: = P and E: = {d ∩ P: d is a disk in ℝ²}. We prove that f_ H(2,k) ≤ 3.7^k, that is, the pairs of points (2-tuples) can be k-colored such that any disk containing at least 3.7^k points has pairs of all colors. We generalize this result to points and balls in higher dimensions. - For the family H of hypergraphs that are defined by grid vertices and axis-parallel rectangles in the plane, we show that f_H(2,k) ≤ √{ck ln k} for some constant c. We then generalize this to higher dimensions, to other shapes, and to tuples of larger size. - For the family H of shrinkable hypergraphs of VC-dimension at most d we prove that f_ H(d+1,k) ≤ c^k for some constant c = c(d). Towards this bound, we obtain a result of independent interest: Every hypergraph with n vertices and with VC-dimension at most d has a (d+1)-tuple T of depth at least n/c, i.e., any hyperedge that contains T also contains n/c other vertices. - For the relationship between t-tuple coloring and vertex coloring in any hypergraph H we establish the inequality 1/e⋅ tk^{1/t} ≤ f_H(t,k) ≤ f_H(1,tk^{1/t}). For the special case of k = 2, referred to as the bichromatic coloring, we prove that t+1 ≤ f_H(t,2) ≤ max{f_H(1,2), t+1}; this improves upon the previous best known upper bound. - We study the relationship between tuple coloring and epsilon nets. In particular we show that if f_H(1,k) = O(k) for a hypergraph H with n vertices, then for any 0 < ε < 1 the t-tuples of H can be partitioned into Ω((εn/t)^t) ε-t-nets. This bound is tight when t is a constant.

The Maximum Number of Digons Formed by Pairwise Intersecting Pseudocircles

Abstract
In 1972, Branko Grünbaum conjectured that any nontrivial arrangement of n > 2 pairwise intersecting pseudocircles in the plane can have at most 2n-2 digons (regions enclosed by exactly two pseudoarcs), with the bound being tight. While this conjecture has been confirmed for cylindrical arrangements of pseudocircles and more recently for geometric circles, we extend these results to any simple arrangement of pairwise intersecting pseudocircles.
