Resilience in Knowledge Graph Embeddings

Abstract
In recent years, knowledge graphs have gained interest and witnessed widespread applications in various domains, such as information retrieval, question-answering, recommendation systems, amongst others. Large-scale knowledge graphs to this end have demonstrated their utility in effectively representing structured knowledge. To further facilitate the application of machine learning techniques, knowledge graph embedding models have been developed. Such models can transform entities and relationships within knowledge graphs into vectors. However, these embedding models often face challenges related to noise, missing information, distribution shift, adversarial attacks, etc. This can lead to sub-optimal embeddings and incorrect inferences, thereby negatively impacting downstream applications. While the existing literature has focused so far on adversarial attacks on KGE models, the challenges related to the other critical aspects remain unexplored. In this paper, we, first of all, give a unified definition of resilience, encompassing several factors such as generalisation, in-distribution generalization, distribution adaption, and robustness. After formalizing these concepts for machine learning in general, we define them in the context of knowledge graphs. To find the gap in the existing works on resilience in the context of knowledge graphs, we perform a systematic survey, taking into account all these aspects mentioned previously. Our survey results show that most of the existing works focus on a specific aspect of resilience, namely robustness. After categorizing such works based on their respective aspects of resilience, we discuss the challenges and future research directions.

Connected Partitions via Connected Dominating Sets

Abstract
The classical theorem due to Győri and Lovász states that any k-connected graph G admits a partition into k connected subgraphs, where each subgraph has a prescribed size and contains a prescribed vertex, as long as the total size of target subgraphs is equal to the size of G. However, this result is notoriously evasive in terms of efficient constructions, and it is still unknown whether such a partition can be computed in polynomial time, even for k = 5. We make progress towards an efficient constructive version of the Győri-Lovász theorem by considering a natural strengthening of the k-connectivity requirement. Specifically, we show that the desired connected partition can be found in polynomial time, if G contains k disjoint connected dominating sets. As a consequence of this result, we give several efficient approximate and exact constructive versions of the original Győri-Lovász theorem: - On general graphs, a Győri-Lovász partition with k parts can be computed in polynomial time when the input graph has connectivity Ω(k ⋅ log² n); - On convex bipartite graphs, connectivity of 4k is sufficient; - On biconvex graphs and interval graphs, connectivity of k is sufficient, meaning that our algorithm gives a "true" constructive version of the theorem on these graph classes.

Integrating Human-In-The-Loop AI to Tackle Space Communication Delay Challenges

Abstract
Deep space missions face significant communication delays that disrupt both operational workflows and psychological support for crew members. Unlike low Earth orbit operations, delays ranging from several minutes to nearly an hour make real-time communication with mission control infeasible, forcing crews to act with greater independence under uncertain conditions. This position paper examines how human-in-the-loop AI, digital twins, and edge AI can be integrated to mitigate these delays while maintaining astronaut autonomy and engagement. We argue that human-in-the-loop AI enables decision-making processes that are responsive to local context while remaining adaptable to changing mission demands. Digital twins offer real-time simulation and predictive modelling capabilities, allowing astronauts to explore options and troubleshoot without waiting for ground input. Edge AI brings computation closer to data sources, enabling low-latency inference onboard spacecraft for time-critical decisions. These ideas are explored through two use cases: using deepfakes to support emotionally resonant communication with loved ones, and applying visual-language models for onboard fault diagnosis and adaptive task replanning. We conclude with reflections on system design challenges under constrained and high-stakes conditions.

DiVerG: Scalable Distance Index for Validation of Paired-End Alignments in Sequence Graphs

Abstract
Determining the distance between two loci within a genomic region is a recurrent operation in various tasks in computational genomics. A notable example of this task arises in paired-end read mapping as a form of validation of distances between multiple alignments. While straightforward for a single genome, graph-based reference structures render the operation considerably more involved. Given the sheer number of such queries in a typical read mapping experiment, an efficient algorithm for answering distance queries is crucial. In this paper, we introduce DiVerG, a compact data structure as well as a fast and scalable algorithm, for constructing distance indexes for general sequence graphs on multi-core CPU and many-core GPU architectures. DiVerG is based on PairG [Jain et al., 2019], but overcomes the limitations of PairG by exploiting the extensive potential for improvements in terms of scalability and space efficiency. As a consequence, DiVerG can process substantially larger datasets, such as whole human genomes, which are unmanageable by PairG. DiVerG offers faster index construction time and consistently faster query time with gains proportional to the size of the underlying compact data structure. We demonstrate that our method performs favorably on multiple real datasets at various scales. DiVerG achieves superior performance over PairG; e.g. resulting to 2.5-4x speed-up in query time, 44-340x smaller index size, and 3-50x faster construction time for the genome graph of the MHC region, as a particularly variable region of the human genome. Formulations and Constructions of Remote State Preparation with Verifiability, with Applications

Abstract
Remote state preparation with verifiability (RSPV) is an important quantum cryptographic primitive [Alexandru Gheorghiu and Thomas Vidick, 2019; Jiayu Zhang, 2022]. In this primitive, a client would like to prepare a quantum state (sampled or chosen from a state family) on the server side, such that ideally the client knows its full description, while the server holds and only holds the state itself. In this work we make several contributions on its formulations, constructions and applications. In more detail: - We first work on the definitions and abstract properties of the RSPV problem. We select and compare different variants of definitions [Bennett et al., 2001; Alexandru Gheorghiu and Thomas Vidick, 2019; Jiayu Zhang, 2022; Alexandru Gheorghiu et al., 2022], and study their basic properties (like composability and amplification). - We also study a closely related question of how to certify the server’s operations (instead of solely the states). We introduce a new notion named remote operator application with verifiability (ROAV). We compare this notion with related existing definitions [Summers and Werner, 1987; Dominic Mayers and Andrew Chi-Chih Yao, 2004; Zhengfeng Ji et al., 2021; Tony Metger and Thomas Vidick, 2021; Anand Natarajan and Tina Zhang, 2023], study its abstract properties and leave its concrete constructions for further works. - Building on the abstract properties and existing results [Zvika Brakerski et al., 2023], we construct a series of new RSPV protocols. Our constructions not only simplify existing results [Alexandru Gheorghiu and Thomas Vidick, 2019] but also cover new state families, for example, states in the form of 1/√2 (|0⟩ + |x_0⟩ + |1⟩ |x_1⟩). All these constructions rely only on the existence of weak NTCF [Zvika Brakerski et al., 2020; Navid Alamati et al., 2022], without additional requirements like the adaptive hardcore bit property [Zvika Brakerski et al., 2018; Navid Alamati et al., 2022]. - As a further application, we show that the classical verification of quantum computations (CVQC) problem [Dorit Aharonov et al., 2010; Urmila Mahadev, 2018] could be constructed from assumptions on group actions [Navid Alamati et al., 2020]. This is achieved by combining our results on RSPV with group-action-based instantiation of weak NTCF [Navid Alamati et al., 2022], and then with the quantum-gadget-assisted quantum verification protocol [Ferracin et al., 2018].

On Assessing ML Model Robustness: A Methodological Framework (Academic Track)

Abstract
Due to their uncertainty and vulnerability to adversarial attacks, machine learning (ML) models can lead to severe consequences, including the loss of human life, when embedded in safety-critical systems such as autonomous vehicles. Therefore, it is crucial to assess the empirical robustness of such models before integrating them into these systems. ML model robustness refers to the ability of an ML model to be insensitive to input perturbations and maintain its performance. Against this background, the Confiance.ai research program proposes a methodological framework for assessing the empirical robustness of ML models. The framework encompasses methodological processes (guidelines) captured in Capella models, along with a set of supporting tools. This paper aims to provide an overview of this framework and its application in an industrial setting.

Abstract
Large Language Models (LLMs) have taken Knowledge Representation - and the world - by storm. This inflection point marks a shift from explicit knowledge representation to a renewed focus on the hybrid representation of both explicit knowledge and parametric knowledge. In this position paper, we will discuss some of the common debate points within the community on LLMs (parametric knowledge) and Knowledge Graphs (explicit knowledge) and speculate on opportunities and visions that the renewed focus brings, as well as related research topics and challenges.

Machine Learning and Knowledge Graphs: Existing Gaps and Future Research Challenges

Abstract
The graph model is nowadays largely adopted to model a wide range of knowledge and data, spanning from social networks to knowledge graphs (KGs), representing a successful paradigm of how symbolic and transparent AI can scale on the World Wide Web. However, due to their unprecedented volume, they are generally tackled by Machine Learning (ML) and mostly numeric based methods such as graph embedding models (KGE) and deep neural networks (DNNs). The latter methods have been proved lately very efficient, leading the current AI spring. In this vision paper, we introduce some of the main existing methods for combining KGs and ML, divided into two categories: those using ML to improve KGs, and those using KGs to improve results on ML tasks. From this introduction, we highlight research gaps and perspectives that we deem promising and currently under-explored for the involved research communities, spanning from KG support for LLM prompting, integration of KG semantics in ML models to symbol-based methods, interpretability of ML models, and the need for improved benchmark datasets. In our opinion, such perspectives are stepping stones in an ultimate view of KGs as central assets for neuro-symbolic and explainable AI.

While Knowledge Graphs (KGs) have long been used as valuable sources of structured knowledge, in recent years, KG embeddings have become a popular way of deriving numeric vector representations from them, for instance, to support knowledge graph completion and similarity search. This study surveys advances as well as open challenges and opportunities in this area. For instance, the most prominent embedding models focus primarily on structural information. However, there has been notable progress in incorporating further aspects, such as semantics, multi-modal, temporal, and multilingual features. Most embedding techniques are assessed using human-curated benchmark datasets for the task of link prediction, neglecting other important real-world KG applications. Many approaches assume a static knowledge graph and are unable to account for dynamic changes. Additionally, KG embeddings may encode data biases and lack interpretability. Overall, this study provides an overview of promising research avenues to learn improved KG embeddings that can address a more diverse range of use cases.

The Complexity of SORE-definability Problems

Abstract
Single occurrence regular expressions (SORE) are a special kind of deterministic regular expressions, which are extensively used in the schema languages DTD and XSD for XML documents. In this paper, with motivations from the simplification of XML schemas, we consider the SORE-definability problem: Given a regular expression, decide whether it has an equivalent SORE. We investigate extensively the complexity of the SORE-definability problem: We consider both (standard) regular expressions and regular expressions with counting, and distinguish between the alphabets of size at least two and unary alphabets. In all cases, we obtain tight complexity bounds. In addition, we consider another variant of this problem, the bounded SORE-definability problem, which is to decide, given a regular expression E and a number M (encoded in unary or binary), whether there is an SORE, which is equivalent to E on the set of words of length at most M. We show that in several cases, there is an exponential decrease in the complexity when switching from the SORE-definability problem to its bounded variant.
