Flavors of Quantifiers in Hyperlogics

Abstract
Hypertrace logic is a sorted first-order logic with separate sorts for time and execution traces. Its formulas specify hyperproperties, which are properties relating multiple traces. In this work, we extend hypertrace logic by introducing trace quantifiers that range over the set of all possible traces. In this extended logic, formulas can quantify over two kinds of trace variables: constrained trace variables, which range over a fixed set of traces defined by the model, and unconstrained trace variables, which can be assigned to any trace. In comparison, hyperlogics such as HyperLTL have only constrained trace quantifiers. We use hypertrace logic to study how different quantifier patterns affect the decidability of the satisfiability problem. We prove that hypertrace logic without constrained trace quantifiers is equivalent to monadic second-order logic of one successor (S1S), and therefore satisfiable, and that the trace-prefixed fragment (all trace quantifiers precede all time quantifiers) is equivalent to HyperQPTL. Moreover, we show that all hypertrace formulas where the only alternation between constrained trace quantifiers is from an existential to a universal quantifier are equisatisfiable to formulas without constraints on their trace variables and, therefore, decidable as well. Our framework allows us to study also time-prefixed hyperlogics, for which we provide new decidability and undecidability results.

GradSTL: Comprehensive Signal Temporal Logic for Neurosymbolic Reasoning and Learning

Abstract
We present GradSTL, the first fully comprehensive implementation of signal temporal logic (STL) suitable for integration with neurosymbolic learning. In particular, GradSTL can successfully evaluate any STL constraint over any signal, regardless of how it is sampled. Our formally verified approach specifies smooth STL semantics over tensors, with formal proofs of soundness and of correctness of its derivative function. Our implementation is generated automatically from this formalisation, without manual coding, guaranteeing correctness by construction. We show via a case study that using our implementation, a neurosymbolic process learns to satisfy a pre-specified STL constraint. Our approach offers a highly rigorous foundation for integrating signal temporal logic and learning by gradient descent.

Higher-Order Timed Automata and Tail Recursion

Abstract
Timed Automata (TA) are a popular formalism to model systems in dense linear time. However, due to their finite state-space, they can only model systems with a finitary logical behavior. There are extensions to e.g., timed pushdown systems and timed recursive state machines. Higher-Order Recursion Schemes (HORS) are another popular model for infinite-state, non-regular systems, naturally stratified by their type-theoretic order. We recently introduced Real-Time Recursion schemes as an approximation of HORS to real-time systems. This paper updates Real-Time Recursion Schemes into Higher-Order Timed Automata, a formalism that defines a tree-shaped timed automaton, which is more suitable to model actual systems. We show that the model-checking problem against the timed version of the modal mu-calculus exhibits the expected complexity bounds, i.e., an increase by one exponential towards the untimed version. We also show that, in the presence of tail recursion, half an exponential can be recovered, mirroring similar gains in the untimed setting. We also give a matching lower bound for the special case of order-1 HORTA. We conjecture that this can be generalized for all orders.

Improving the SMT Proof Reconstruction Pipeline in Isabelle/HOL

Abstract
Sledgehammer is a tool that increases the level of automation in the Isabelle/HOL proof assistant by asking external automatic theorem provers (ATPs), including SMT solvers, to prove the current goal. When the external ATP succeeds it must provide enough evidence that the goal holds for Isabelle to be able to reprove it internally based on that evidence. In particular, Isabelle can do this by replaying fine-grained proof certificates from proof-producing SMT solvers as long as they are expressed in the Alethe format, which until now was supported only by the veriT SMT solver. We report on our experience adding proof reconstruction support for the cvc5 SMT solver in Isabelle by extending cvc5 to produce proofs in the Alethe format and then adapting Isabelle to reconstruct those proofs. We discuss several difficulties and pitfalls we encountered and describe a set of tools and techniques we developed to improve the process. A notable outcome of this effort is that Isabelle can now be used as an independent proof checker for SMT problems written in the SMT-LIB standard. We evaluate cvc5’s integration on a set of SMT-LIB benchmarks originating from Isabelle as well as on a set of Isabelle proofs. Our results confirm that this integration complements and improves Sledgehammer’s capabilities.

Sledgehammering Without ATPs (Short Paper)

Abstract
We describe an alternative architecture for "hammers," inspired by Magnushammer, in which proofs are found by the proof assistant’s built-in automation instead of by external automatic theorem provers (ATPs). We implemented this approach in Isabelle’s Sledgehammer and evaluated it. The new ATP-free approach nicely complements the traditional Sledgehammer. The two approaches in combination solve more goals than the traditional ATP-based approach alone.

Deciding Termination of Simple Randomized Loops

Abstract
We show that universal positive almost sure termination (UPAST) is decidable for a class of simple randomized programs, i.e., it is decidable whether the expected runtime of such a program is finite for all inputs. Our class contains all programs that consist of a single loop, with a linear loop guard and a loop body composed of two linear commuting and diagonalizable updates. In each iteration of the loop, the update to be carried out is picked at random, according to a fixed probability. We show the decidability of UPAST for this class of programs, where the program’s variables and inputs may range over various sub-semirings of the real numbers. In this way, we extend a line of research initiated by Tiwari in 2004 into the realm of randomized programs.

Omega-Regular Verification and Control for Distributional Specifications in MDPs

Abstract
A classical approach to studying Markov decision processes (MDPs) is to view them as state transformers. However, MDPs can also be viewed as distribution transformers, where an MDP under a strategy generates a sequence of probability distributions over MDP states. This view arises in several applications, even as the probabilistic model checking problem becomes much harder compared to the classical state transformer counterpart. It is known that even distributional reachability and safety problems become computationally intractable (Skolem- and positivity-hard). To address this challenge, recent works focused on sound but possibly incomplete methods for verification and control of MDPs under the distributional view. However, existing automated methods are applicable only to distributional reachability, safety and reach-avoidance specifications. In this work, we present the first automated method for verification and control of MDPs with respect to distributional omega-regular specifications. To achieve this, we propose a novel notion of distributional certificates, which are sound and complete proof rules for proving that an MDP under a distributionally memoryless strategy satisfies some distributional omega-regular specification. We then use our distributional certificates to design the first fully automated algorithms for verification and control of MDPs with respect to distributional omega-regular specifications. Our algorithms follow a template-based synthesis approach and provide soundness and relative completeness guarantees, while running in PSPACE. Our prototype implementation demonstrates practical applicability of our algorithms to challenging examples collected from the literature.

Modeling and Explaining an Industrial Workforce Allocation and Scheduling Problem

Abstract
We present an industrial case on workforce allocation and scheduling in the aircraft manufacturing industry, where available teams need to be assigned to logistical operations. This application presents several challenges such as the scale of the problem, the need for fair workload distribution, and the need for methods for mitigating unforeseen disruptions due to technical malfunctions or incompatible weather conditions. We compare different Constraint Programming (CP) models for the allocation and scheduling problems, with extra focus on modeling the workload balancing component. Additionally, we investigate different techniques for explaining infeasibility of a disrupted schedule, such as conflict computation using Minimal Unsatisfiable Subsets (MUSes) and feasibility restoration using Minimal Correction Subsets (MCSes) or constraint relaxations. Our experimental results show that by using appropriate modeling techniques, the problem can be solved in reasonable time, thereby producing fair schedules. Additionally, we show how invalidated schedules can be explained and restored efficiently to help human operators in solving disruptions to the schedule.

Problem Partitioning via Proof Prefixes

Abstract
Satisfiability solvers have been instrumental in tackling hard problems, including mathematical challenges that require years of computation. A key obstacle in efficiently solving such problems lies in effectively partitioning them into many, frequently millions of subproblems. Existing automated partitioning techniques, primarily based on lookahead methods, perform well on some instances but fail to generate effective partitions for many others. This paper introduces a powerful partitioning approach that leverages prefixes of proofs derived from conflict-driven clause-learning solvers. This method enables non-experts to harness the power of massively parallel SAT solving for their problems. We also propose a semantically-driven partitioning technique tailored for problems with large cardinality constraints, which frequently arise in optimization tasks. We evaluate our methods on diverse benchmarks, including combinatorial problems and formulas from SAT and MaxSAT competitions. Our results demonstrate that these techniques outperform existing partitioning strategies in many cases, offering improved scalability and efficiency.

An Application of SAT Solvers in Integer Programming Games

Abstract
Integer programming games (IPGs) are a popular game-theoretic tool to model an array of games where each player has a discrete strategy set. These games arise in important domains such as economics, transportation, cybersecurity, etc., but solving them is non-trivial as it is known that checking for the existence of pure Nash equilibria in an IPG is Σ₂^p-complete. Recent works have proposed a class of relaxed solution concepts for IPGs called locally optimal integer solutions (LOIS) and shown it to be an efficient alternative for pure Nash equilibria. While LOIS are significantly simpler to compute, they still do not scale when solved using traditional mathematical solvers, especially when high-quality solutions are desired. In this paper, we apply commercially available SAT solvers to find LOIS in IPGs. We investigate efficient encodings for a cybersecurity game and compare solution times when using SAT solvers vs mathematical program solvers. We also investigate the application of SAT solvers in graph games using a graph interdiction example and compare against the obtained LOI solutions against existing heuristics-based solutions. Our results indicate that with appropriate encodings, large-scale IPGs can be solved much more efficiently using SAT solvers. We also show that SAT solvers can be applied to graph games in conjunction with LOIS for obtaining high-quality solutions. Our results emphasize the potential of SAT solvers combined with LOIS to solve significant game theory problems.

Vehicle: Bridging the Embedding Gap in the Verification of Neuro-Symbolic Programs (Invited Talk)

Abstract
Neuro-symbolic programs, i.e. programs containing both machine learning components and traditional symbolic code, are becoming increasingly widespread. Finding a general methodology for verifying such programs is challenging due to both the number of different tools involved and the intricate interface between the "neural" and "symbolic" program components. In this paper we present a general decomposition of the neuro-symbolic verification problem into parts, and examine the problem of the embedding gap that occurs when one tries to combine proofs about the neural and symbolic components. To address this problem we then introduce Vehicle - standing as an abbreviation for a "verification condition language" - an intermediate programming language interface between machine learning frameworks, automated theorem provers, and dependently-typed formalisations of neuro-symbolic programs. Vehicle allows users to specify the properties of the neural components of neuro-symbolic programs once, and then safely compile the specification to each interface using a tailored typing and compilation procedure. We give a high-level overview of Vehicle’s overall design, its interfaces and compilation & type-checking procedures, and then demonstrate its utility by formally verifying the safety of a simple autonomous car controlled by a neural network, operating in a stochastic environment with imperfect information.

Safety Verification of Networked Control Systems by Complex Zonotopes

Abstract
Networked control systems (NCS) are widely used in real world applications because of their advantages, such as remote operability and reduced installation costs. However, they are prone to various inaccuracies in execution like delays, packet dropouts, inaccurate sensing and quantization errors. To ensure safety of NCS, their models have to be verified under the consideration of aforementioned uncertainties. In this paper, we tackle the problem of verifying safety of models of NCS under uncertain sampling time, inaccurate output measurement or estimation, and unknown disturbance input. Unbounded-time safety verification requires approximation of reachable sets by invariants, whose computation involves set operations. For uncertain linear dynamics, two important set operations for invariant computation are linear transformation and Minkowski sum operations. Zonotopes have the advantage that linear transformation and Minkowski sum operations can be efficiently approximated. However, they can not encode directions of convergence of trajectories along complex eigenvectors, which is closely related to encoding invariants. Therefore, we extend zonotopes to the complex valued domain by a representation called complex zonotope, which can capture contraction along complex eigenvectors for determining invariants. We prove a related mathematical result that in case of accurate feedback sampling, a complex zonotope will represent an invariant for a stable NCS. In addition, we propose an algorithm to verify the general case based on complex zonotopes, when there is uncertainty in sampling time and in input. We demonstrate the efficiency of our algorithm on benchmark examples and compare it with a state-of-the-art verification tool.

A Hybrid Programming Language for Formal Modeling and Verification of Hybrid Systems

Abstract
Designing and modeling complex cyber-physical systems (CPS) faces the double challenge of combined discrete-continuous dynamics and concurrent behavior. Existing formal modeling and verification languages for CPS expose the underlying proof search technology. They lack high-level structuring elements and are not efficiently executable. The ensuing modeling gap renders formal CPS models hard to understand and to validate. We propose a high-level programming-based approach to formal modeling and verification of hybrid systems as a hybrid extension of an Active Objects language. Well-structured hybrid active programs and requirements allow automatic, reachability-preserving translation into differential dynamic logic, a logic for hybrid (discrete-continuous) programs. Verification is achieved by discharging the resulting formulas with the theorem prover KeYmaera X. We demonstrate the usability of our approach with case studies.

Real-Time Verification for Distributed Cyber-Physical Systems

Abstract
Safety-critical distributed cyber-physical systems (CPSs) have been found in a wide range of applications. Notably, they have displayed a great deal of utility in intelligent transportation, where autonomous vehicles communicate and cooperate with each other via a high-speed communication network. Such systems require an ability to identify maneuvers in real-time that cause dangerous circumstances and ensure the implementation always meets safety-critical requirements. In this paper, we propose a real-time decentralized reachability approach for safety verification of a distributed multi-agent CPS with the underlying assumption that all agents are time-synchronized with a low degree of error. In the proposed approach, each agent periodically computes its local reachable set and exchanges this reachable set with the other agents with the goal of verifying the system safety. Our method, implemented in Java, takes advantages of the timing information and the reachable set information that are available in the exchanged messages to reason about the safety of the whole system in a decentralized manner. Any particular agent can also perform local safety verification tasks based on their local clocks by analyzing the messages it receives. We applied the proposed method to verify, in real-time, the safety properties of a group of quadcopters performing a distributed search mission.

Weighted Transducers for Robustness Verification

Abstract
Automata theory provides us with fundamental notions such as languages, membership, emptiness and inclusion that in turn allow us to specify and verify properties of reactive systems in a useful manner. However, these notions all yield "yes"/"no" answers that sometimes fall short of being satisfactory answers when the models being analyzed are imperfect, and the observations made are prone to errors. To address this issue, a common engineering approach is not just to verify that a system satisfies a property, but whether it does so robustly. We present notions of robustness that place a metric on words, thus providing a natural notion of distance between words. Such a metric naturally leads to a topological neighborhood of words and languages, leading to quantitative and robust versions of the membership, emptiness and inclusion problems. More generally, we consider weighted transducers to model the cost of errors. Such a transducer models neighborhoods of words by providing the cost of rewriting a word into another. The main contribution of this work is to study robustness verification problems in the context of weighted transducers. We provide algorithms for solving the robust and quantitative versions of the membership and inclusion problems while providing useful motivating case studies including approximate pattern matching problems to detect clinically relevant events in a large type-1 diabetes dataset.
