Demand-Aware Small-World Networks on Clustered Demands

Abstract
Small-world networks are attractive for the efficient routing they provide, requiring only a low link density. They have hence also been considered for the design of distributed systems, such as peer-to-peer networks. However, existing small-world network designs are oblivious to the actual traffic they serve. In this paper, we initiate the study of demand-aware small-world networks. In particular, we extend the Kleinberg graph model, by allowing the nodes to choose the distribution of long-range links according to the traffic demand. We present a formal analysis of the weighted route lengths for the important case of clustered demands. We show both in theory and in simulations, using real-world traffic workloads, that demand-aware small-world graphs can significantly outperform their demand-oblivious counterparts.

Parameterized Complexity of Directed Traveling Salesman Problem

Abstract
The Directed Traveling Salesman Problem (DTSP) is a variant of the classical Traveling Salesman Problem in which the edges in the graph are directed and a vertex and edge can be visited multiple times. The goal is to find a directed closed walk of minimum length (or total weight) that visits every vertex of the given graph at least once. In a yet more general version, Directed Waypoint Routing Problem (DWRP), some vertices are marked as terminals and we are only required to visit all terminals. Furthermore, each edge has its capacity bounding the number of times this edge can be used by a solution. While both problems (and many other variants of TSP) were extensively investigated, mostly from the approximation point of view, there are surprisingly few results concerning the parameterized complexity. Our starting point is the result of Marx et al. [APPROX/RANDOM 2016] who proved that DTSP is W[1]-hard parameterized by distance to pathwidth 3. In this paper we aim to initiate the systematic complexity study of variants of Directed Traveling Salesman Problem with respect to various, mostly structural, parameters. We show that DWRP is FPT parameterized by the solution size, the feedback edge number and the vertex integrity of the underlying undirected graph. Furthermore, the problem is XP parameterized by treewidth. On the complexity side, we show that the problem is W[1]-hard parameterized by the distance to constant treedepth.

Model-Agnostic Approximation of Constrained Forest Problems

Abstract
Constrained Forest Problems (CFPs) as introduced by Goemans and Williamson in 1995 capture a wide range of network design problems with edge subsets as solutions, such as Minimum Spanning Tree, Steiner Forest, and Point-to-Point Connection. While individual CFPs have been studied extensively in individual computational models, a unified approach to solving general CFPs in multiple computational models has been lacking. Against this background, we present the shell-decomposition algorithm, a model-agnostic meta-algorithm that efficiently computes a (2+ε)-approximation to CFPs for a broad class of forest functions. The shell-decomposition algorithm isolates the problem-specific hardness of individual CFPs in a single computational subroutine, breaking the remainder of the computation into fundamental tasks that are studied extensively in a wide range of computational models. In contrast to prior work, our framework is compatible with the use of approximate distances. To demonstrate the power and flexibility of this result, we instantiate our algorithm for three fundamental, NP-hard CFPs (Steiner Forest, Point-to-Point Connection, and Facility Placement and Connection) in three different computational models (Congest, PRAM, and Multi-Pass Streaming). For constant ε, we obtain the following (2+ε)-approximations in the Congest model: [(1)] 1) For Steiner Forest specified via input components (SF-IC), where each node knows the identifier of one of k disjoint subsets of V (the input components), we achieve a deterministic (2+ε)-approximation in 𝒪̃(√n+D+k) rounds, where D is the hop diameter of the graph, significantly improving over the state of the art. 2) For Steiner Forest specified via symmetric connection requests (SF-SCR), where connection requests are issued to pairs of nodes u,v ∈ V, we leverage randomized equality testing to reduce the running time to 𝒪̃(√n+D), succeeding with high probability. 3) For Point-to-Point Connection, we provide a (2+ε)-approximation in 𝒪̃(√n+D) rounds. 4) For Facility Placement and Connection, a relative of non-metric Uncapacitated Facility Location, we obtain a (2+ε)-approximation in 𝒪̃(√n + D) rounds. We further show how to replace the √n+D term by the complexity of solving Partwise Aggregation, achieving (near-)universal optimality in any setting in which a solution to Partwise Aggregation in near-shortcut-quality time is known. Notably, all of our concrete results can be derived with relative ease once our model-agnostic meta-algorithm has been specified. This demonstrates the power of our modularization approach to algorithm design.

Cache Timing Leakages in Zero-Knowledge Protocols

Abstract
The area of modern zero-knowledge proof systems has seen a significant rise in popularity over the last couple of years, with new techniques and optimized constructions emerging on a regular basis. As the field matures, the aspect of implementation attacks becomes more relevant, however side-channel attacks on zero-knowledge proof systems have seen surprisingly little treatment so far. In this paper, we give an overview of potential attack vectors and show that some of the underlying finite field libraries, and implementations of heavily used components like hash functions using them, are vulnerable w.r.t. cache attacks on CPUs. On the positive side, we demonstrate that the computational overhead to protect against these attacks is relatively small.

Edge Clique Partition and Cover Beyond Independence

Abstract
Covering and partitioning the edges of a graph into cliques are classical problems at the intersection of combinatorial optimization and graph theory, having been studied through a range of algorithmic and complexity-theoretic lenses. Despite the well-known fixed-parameter tractability of these problems when parameterized by the total number of cliques, such a parameterization often fails to be meaningful for sparse graphs. In many real-world instances, on the other hand, the minimum number of cliques in an edge cover or partition can be very close to the size of a maximum independent set α(G). Motivated by this observation, we investigate above-α parameterizations of the edge clique cover and partition problems. Concretely, we introduce and study Edge Clique Cover Above Independent Set (ECC/α) and Edge Clique Partition Above Independent Set (ECP/α), where the goal is to cover or partition all edges of a graph using at most α(G) + k cliques, and k is the parameter. Our main results reveal a distinct complexity landscape for the two variants. We show that ECP/α is fixed-parameter tractable, whereas ECC/α is NP-complete for all k ≥ 2, yet can be solved in polynomial time for k ∈ {0,1}. These findings highlight intriguing differences between the two problems when viewed through the lens of parameterization above a natural lower bound. Finally, we demonstrate that ECC/α becomes fixed-parameter tractable when parameterized by k + ω(G), where ω(G) is the size of a maximum clique of the graph G. This result is particularly relevant for sparse graphs, in which ω is typically small. For H-minor free graphs, we design a subexponential algorithm of running time f(H)^√k ⋅ n^𝒪(1).

Integrating Human-In-The-Loop AI to Tackle Space Communication Delay Challenges

Abstract
Deep space missions face significant communication delays that disrupt both operational workflows and psychological support for crew members. Unlike low Earth orbit operations, delays ranging from several minutes to nearly an hour make real-time communication with mission control infeasible, forcing crews to act with greater independence under uncertain conditions. This position paper examines how human-in-the-loop AI, digital twins, and edge AI can be integrated to mitigate these delays while maintaining astronaut autonomy and engagement. We argue that human-in-the-loop AI enables decision-making processes that are responsive to local context while remaining adaptable to changing mission demands. Digital twins offer real-time simulation and predictive modelling capabilities, allowing astronauts to explore options and troubleshoot without waiting for ground input. Edge AI brings computation closer to data sources, enabling low-latency inference onboard spacecraft for time-critical decisions. These ideas are explored through two use cases: using deepfakes to support emotionally resonant communication with loved ones, and applying visual-language models for onboard fault diagnosis and adaptive task replanning. We conclude with reflections on system design challenges under constrained and high-stakes conditions.

Advancing Intelligent Personal Assistants for Human Spaceflight

Abstract
The Artemis program and upcoming missions to Mars mark a new era of human space exploration that will require new tools to support astronaut autonomy in the absence of real-time communication with Earth. This paper investigates the role of voice-based intelligent personal assistants (IPAs) in future crewed space missions. Through semi-structured interviews with astronauts (n=3) and spaceflight experts (n=12), we identify key user-centered design requirements for IPAs in this uniquely constrained and safety-critical environment. Our thematic analysis reveals core requirements for flexibility, reliability, offline capability, and multimodal interaction. Drawing on these findings, we outline design guidelines for next-generation IPAs and discuss how technologies such as retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), knowledge graphs, and augmented reality should be combined to support flexible, reliable, and multimodal IPAs for future human spaceflight missions.

Movement in Low Gravity (MoLo) – LUNA: Biomechanical Modelling to Mitigate Lunar Surface Operation Risks

Abstract
The Artemis programme seeks to develop and test concepts, hardware and approaches to support long term habitation of the Lunar surface, and future missions to Mars. In preparation for the Artemis missions determination of tasks to be performed, the functional requirements of such tasks and as mission duration extends whether physiological deconditioning becomes functionally significant, compromising the crew member’s ability to perform critical tasks on the surface, and/or upon return to earth [MoLo-LUNA – leveraging the Molo programme (and several other activities) - could become a key supporting activity for LUNA incl. validation of the Puppeteer offloading system itself via creation of a complementary MoLo-LUNA-LAB. Furthermore, the MoLo-LUNA programme could become a key facilitator of simulator suit instrumentation/definition, broader astronaut training activities and mission architecture development – including Artemis mission simulations. By employing a Puppeteer system external to the LUNA chamber hall it will optimise utilisation and cost-effectiveness of LUNA, and as such represents a critical service to future LUNA stakeholders. Furthermore, MoLo-LUNA would generate a unique data set that can be leveraged to predict de-conditioning on the Lunar surface - and thereby optimise functionality, and minimise mission risk – including informing the need for, and prescription of exercise countermeasures on the Lunar Surface and in transit. Thus, MoLo-LUNA offers a unique opportunity to place LUNA, and ESA as a key ongoing provider of evidence to define, optimise and support crew Artemis surface missions.

Minimizing Recourse in an Adaptive Balls and Bins Game

Abstract
We consider a simple load-balancing game between an algorithm and an adaptive adversary. In a simplified version of this game, the adversary observes the assignment of jobs to machines and selects a machine to kill. The algorithm must then restart the jobs from the failed machine on other machines. The adversary repeats this process, observing the new assignment and eliminating another machine, and so on. The adversary aims to force the algorithm to perform many restarts, while we seek a robust algorithm that minimizes restarts regardless of the adversary’s strategy. This game was recently introduced by Bhattacharya et al. for designing a 3-spanner with low recourse against an adaptive adversary. We prove that a simple algorithm, which assigns each job to a randomly chosen live bin, incurs O(n log n) recourse against an adaptive adversary. This enables us to construct a much simpler 3-spanner with a recourse that is smaller by a factor of O(log² n) compared to the previous construction, without increasing the update time or the size of the spanner. This motivates a careful examination of the range of attacks an adaptive adversary can deploy against simple algorithms before resorting to more complex ones. As our case study demonstrates, this attack space may not be as large as it initially appears, enabling the development of robust algorithms that are both simpler and easier to analyze.

Brief Announcement: Efficient Distributed Algorithms for Shape Reduction via Reconfigurable Circuits

Abstract
In this paper, we study the problem of efficiently reducing geometric shapes into other such shapes in a distributed setting through size-changing operations. We develop distributed algorithms using the reconfigurable circuit model to enable fast node-to-node communication. Let n denote the number of nodes and k the number of turning points in the initial shape. We show that the system of nodes can reduce itself from any tree to a single node using only shrinking operations in O(k log n) rounds w.h.p. and any tree to its incompressible form in O(log n) rounds given prior knowledge of the incompressible nodes, or O(k log n) without it, w.h.p. We also give an algorithm to transform any tree to a topologically equivalent tree in O(k log n+log² n) rounds w.h.p. using both shrinking and growth operations. On the negative side, we show that one cannot hope for o(log² n)-round transformations for all shapes of Θ(log n) turning points.

A Formal Language Perspective on Factorized Representations

Abstract
Factorized representations (FRs) are a well-known tool to succinctly represent results of join queries and have been originally defined using the named database perspective. We define FRs in the unnamed database perspective and use them to establish several new connections. First, unnamed FRs can be exponentially more succinct than named FRs, but this difference can be alleviated by imposing a disjointness condition on columns. Conversely, named FRs can also be exponentially more succinct than unnamed FRs. Second, unnamed FRs are the same as (i.e., isomorphic to) context-free grammars for languages in which each word has the same length. This tight connection allows us to transfer a wide range of results on context-free grammars to database factorization; of which we offer a selection in the paper. Third, when we generalize unnamed FRs to arbitrary sets of tuples, they become a generalization of path multiset representations, a formalism that was recently introduced to succinctly represent sets of paths in the context of graph database query evaluation.

Agreement Tasks in Fault-Prone Synchronous Networks of Arbitrary Structure

Abstract
Consensus is arguably the most studied problem in distributed computing as a whole, and particularly in the distributed message-passing setting. In this latter framework, research on consensus has considered various hypotheses regarding the failure types, the memory constraints, the algorithmic performances (e.g., early stopping and obliviousness), etc. Surprisingly, almost all of this work assumes that messages are passed in a complete network, i.e., each process has a direct link to every other process. A noticeable exception is the recent work of Castañeda et al. (Inf. Comput. 2023) who designed a generic oblivious algorithm for consensus running in radius(G,t) rounds in every graph G, when up to t nodes can crash by irrevocably stopping, where t is smaller than the node-connectivity κ of G. Here, radius(G,t) denotes a graph parameter called the radius of G whenever up to t nodes can crash. For t = 0, this parameter coincides with radius(G), the standard radius of a graph, and, for G = K_n, the running time radius(K_n,t) = t+1 of the algorithm exactly matches the known round-complexity of consensus in the clique K_n. Our main result is a proof that radius(G,t) rounds are necessary for oblivious algorithms solving consensus in G when up to t nodes can crash, thus validating a conjecture of Castañeda et al., and demonstrating that their consensus algorithm is optimal for any graph G. We also extend the result of Castañeda et al. to two different settings: First, to the case where the number t of failures is not necessarily smaller than the connectivity κ of the considered graph; Second, to the k-set agreement problem for which agreement is not restricted to be on a single value as in consensus, but on up to k different values.

Online Balanced Allocation of Dynamic Components

Abstract
We introduce Online Balanced Allocation of Dynamic Components (OBADC), a problem motivated by the practical challenge of dynamic resource allocation for large-scale distributed applications. In OBADC, we need to allocate a dynamic set of at most k𝓁 vertices (representing processes) in 𝓁 > 0 clusters. We consider an over-provisioned setup in which each cluster can hold at most k(1+ε) vertices, for an arbitrary constant ε > 0. The communication requirements among the vertices are modeled by the notion of a dynamically changing component, which is a subset of vertices that need to be co-located in the same cluster. At each time t, a request r_t of one of the following types arrives: 1) insertion of a vertex v forming a singleton component v at unit cost. 2) merge of (u,v) requiring that the components containing u and v be merged and co-located thereafter. 3) deletion of an existing vertex v at zero cost. Before serving any request, an algorithm can migrate vertices from one cluster to another, at a unit migration cost per vertex. We seek an online algorithm to minimize the total migration cost incurred for an arbitrary request sequence σ = (r_t)_{t > 0}, while simultaneously minimizing the number of clusters utilized. We analyze competitiveness with respect to an optimal clairvoyant offline algorithm with identical (over-provisioned) capacity constraints. We give an O(log k)-competitive algorithm for OBADC, and a matching lower-bound. The number of clusters utilized by our algorithm is always within a (2+ε) factor of the minimum. Furthermore, in a resource augmented setting where the optimal offline algorithm is constrained to capacity k per cluster, our algorithm obtains O(log k) competitiveness and utilizes a number of clusters within (1+ε) factor of the minimum. We also consider OBADC in the context of machine-learned predictions, where for each newly inserted vertex v at time t: i) with probability η > 0, the set of vertices (that exist at time t) in the component of v is revealed and, ii) with probability 1-η, no information is revealed. For OBADC with predictions, we give a O(1)-consistent and O(min(log 1/(η), log k))-robust algorithm.

Data Reconstruction: When You See It and When You Don't

Abstract
We revisit the fundamental question of formally defining what constitutes a reconstruction attack. While often clear from the context, our exploration reveals that a precise definition is much more nuanced than it appears, to the extent that a single all-encompassing definition may not exist. Thus, we employ a different strategy and aim to "sandwich" the concept of reconstruction attacks by addressing two complementing questions: (i) What conditions guarantee that a given system is protected against such attacks? (ii) Under what circumstances does a given attack clearly indicate that a system is not protected? More specifically, - We introduce a new definitional paradigm - Narcissus Resiliency - to formulate a security definition for protection against reconstruction attacks. This paradigm has a self-referential nature that enables it to circumvent shortcomings of previously studied notions of security. Furthermore, as a side-effect, we demonstrate that Narcissus resiliency captures as special cases multiple well-studied concepts including differential privacy and other security notions of one-way functions and encryption schemes. - We formulate a link between reconstruction attacks and Kolmogorov complexity. This allows us to put forward a criterion for evaluating when such attacks are convincingly successful.

Crash-Tolerant Exploration of Trees by Energy-Sharing Mobile Agents

Abstract
We consider the problem of graph exploration by energy sharing mobile agents that are subject to crash faults. More precisely, we consider a team of two agents where at most one of them may fail unpredictably, and the considered topology is that of connected acyclic graphs (i.e. trees). We consider both the asynchronous and the synchronous settings, and we provide necessary and sufficient conditions about the energy.
