On the Complexity of Computing Strahler Numbers

Authors: Moses Ganardi and Markus Lohrey

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 364, 43rd International Symposium on Theoretical Aspects of Computer Science (STACS 2026)

Abstract
It is shown that the problem of computing the Strahler number of a binary tree given as a term is complete for the circuit complexity class uniform NC¹. For several variants, where the binary tree is given by a pointer structure or in a succinct form by a directed acyclic graph or a tree straight-line program, the complexity of computing the Strahler number is determined as well. The problem, whether a given context-free grammar in Chomsky normal form produces a derivation tree (resp., an acyclic derivation tree), whose Strahler number is at least a given number k is shown to be P-complete (resp., PSPACE-complete).

Parametric Disjunctive Timed Networks

Authors: Étienne André, Swen Jacobs, and Engel Lefaucheux

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 363, 34th EACSL Annual Conference on Computer Science Logic (CSL 2026)

Abstract
We consider distributed systems with an arbitrary number of processes, modelled by timed automata that communicate through location guards: a process can take a guarded transition if at least one other process is in a given location. In this work, we introduce parametric disjunctive timed networks, where each timed automaton may contain timing parameters, i.e., unknown constants. We investigate two problems: deciding the emptiness of the set of parameter valuations for which 1) a given location is reachable for at least one process (local property), and 2) a global state is reachable where all processes are in a given location (global property). Our main positive result is that the first problem is decidable for networks of processes with a single clock and without invariants; this result holds for arbitrarily many timing parameters - a setting with few known decidability results. However, it becomes undecidable when invariants are allowed, or when considering global properties, even for systems with a single parameter. This highlights the significant expressive power of invariants in these networks. Additionally, we exhibit further decidable subclasses by restraining the syntax of guards and invariants.

A Note on the Parameterised Complexity of Coverability in Vector Addition Systems

Authors: Michał Pilipczuk, Sylvain Schmitz, and Henry Sinclair-Banks

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 358, 20th International Symposium on Parameterized and Exact Computation (IPEC 2025)

Abstract
We investigate the parameterised complexity of the classic coverability problem for vector addition systems (VAS): V ⊆ ℤ^d, an initial configuration s ∈ ℕ^d, and a target configuration t ∈ ℕ^d, decide whether starting from s, one can iteratively add vectors from V to ultimately arrive at a configuration that is larger than or equal to t on every coordinate, while not observing any negative value on any coordinate along the way. We consider two natural parameters for the problem: the dimension d and the size of V, defined as the total bitsize of its encoding. We present several results charting the complexity of those two parameterisations, among which the highlight is that coverability for VAS parameterised by the dimension and with all the numbers in the input encoded in unary is complete for the class XNL under PL-reductions. We also discuss open problems in the topic, most notably the question about fixed-parameter tractability for the parameterisation by the size of V.

Abstract
Quantum technologies are progressing at an extraordinary pace and are poised to transform numerous sectors both nationally and globally. Among them, quantum computing stands out for its potential to revolutionize areas such as cryptography, optimization, and the simulation of quantum systems, offering dramatic speed-ups for specific classes of problems. As quantum devices evolve and become increasingly pervasive, guaranteeing their correctness is of paramount importance. This necessitates the development of rigorous methods and tools to analyze and verify their behavior. However, the construction of such verification frameworks presents fundamental challenges. Quantum phenomena such as superposition and entanglement give rise to computational behaviors that differ profoundly from those of classical systems, leading to inherently probabilistic models and exponentially large state spaces, even for relatively small programs. Addressing these challenges requires building on the extensive expertise of the formal methods community in classical program verification, while incorporating recent advances and collaborative efforts in quantum systems. An interesting challenge for the verification community is to design and implement novel verification frameworks that transfer the key strengths of classical verification, such as expressive specification, precise error detection, automation, and scalability, to the quantum domain. We expect that the results of this research will play a crucial role in enabling the dependable deployment of quantum technologies across a wide range of future applications.

Unboundedness Problems for Formal Languages (Invited Talk)

Authors: Georg Zetzsche

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 360, 45th IARCS Annual Conference on Foundations of Software Technology and Theoretical Computer Science (FSTTCS 2025)

Abstract
Informally, unboundedness problems are decision problems that ask about the existence of infinitely many words (satisfying certain properties) in a formal language. For example: Is a given language infinite? Or: Does a given language have super-polynomial growth? These came into focus in recent years because of their connections to downward closure computation and separability problems. Although unboundedness problems may seem difficult at first, it turns out that there are techniques that are at the same time conceptually very simple, but also apply to a surprisingly wide variety of language classes. The talk will survey recent results (and techniques) concerning unboundedness problems.

Parameterized Verification of Timed Networks with Clock Invariants

Authors: Étienne André, Swen Jacobs, Shyam Lal Karra, and Ocan Sankur

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 360, 45th IARCS Annual Conference on Foundations of Software Technology and Theoretical Computer Science (FSTTCS 2025)

Abstract
We consider parameterized verification problems for networks of timed automata (TAs) based on different communication primitives. To this end, we first consider disjunctive timed networks (DTNs), i.e., networks of TAs that communicate via location guards that enable a transition only if there is another process in a certain location. We solve for the first time the case with unrestricted clock invariants, and establish that the parameterized model checking problem (PMCP) over finite local traces can be reduced to the corresponding model checking problem on a single TA. Moreover, we prove that the PMCP for networks that communicate via lossy broadcast can be reduced to the PMCP for DTNs. Finally, we show that for networks with k-wise synchronization, and therefore also for timed Petri nets, location reachability can be reduced to location reachability in DTNs. As a consequence we can answer positively the open problem from Abdulla et al. (2018) whether the universal safety problem for timed Petri nets with multiple clocks is decidable.

Negated String Containment Is Decidable

Authors: Vojtěch Havlena, Michal Hečko, Lukáš Holík, and Ondřej Lengál

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 345, 50th International Symposium on Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science (MFCS 2025)

Abstract
We provide a positive answer to a long-standing open question of the decidability of the not-contains string predicate. Not-contains is practically relevant, for instance in symbolic execution of string manipulating programs. Particularly, we show that the predicate ¬Contains(x₁ … x_n, y₁ … y_m), where x₁ … x_n and y₁ … y_m are sequences of string variables constrained by regular languages, is decidable. Decidability of a not-contains predicate combined with chain-free word equations and regular membership constraints follows.

On the Reachability Problem for Two-Dimensional Branching VASS

Authors: Clotilde Bizière, Thibault Hilaire, Jérôme Leroux, and Grégoire Sutre

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 345, 50th International Symposium on Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science (MFCS 2025)

Abstract
Vectors addition systems with states (VASS), or equivalently Petri nets, are arguably one of the most studied formalisms for the modeling and analysis of concurrent systems. A central decision problem for VASS is reachability: whether there exists a run from an initial configuration to a final one. This problem has been known to be decidable for over forty years, and its complexity has recently been precisely characterized. Our work concerns the reachability problem for BVASS, a branching generalization of VASS. In dimension one, the exact complexity of this problem is known. In this paper, we prove that the reachability problem for 2-dimensional BVASS is decidable. In fact, we even show that the reachability set admits a computable semilinear presentation. The decidability status of the reachability problem for BVASS remains open in higher dimensions.

Optimal Concolic Dynamic Partial Order Reduction

Abstract
Stateless model checking (SMC) software implementations requires exploring both concurrency- and data nondeterminism. Unfortunately, most SMC algorithms focus on efficient exploration of concurrency nondeterminism, thereby neglecting an important source of bugs. We present ConDpor, an SMC algorithm for unmodified Java programs that combines optimal dynamic partial order reduction (DPOR) for concurrency nondeterminism, with concolic execution for data nondeterminism. ConDpor is sound, complete, optimal, and parametric w.r.t. the memory consistency model. Our experiments confirm that ConDpor is exponentially faster than DPOR with small-domain enumeration. Overall, ConDpor opens the door for efficient exploration of concurrent programs with data nondeterminism.

Partial-Order Reduction Is Hard

Authors: Frédéric Herbreteau, Sarah Larroze-Jardiné, and Igor Walukiewicz

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 348, 36th International Conference on Concurrency Theory (CONCUR 2025)

Abstract
The goal of partial-order methods is to accelerate the exploration of concurrent systems by examining only a representative subset of all possible runs. The stateful approach builds a transition system with representative runs, while the stateless method simply enumerates them. The stateless approach may be preferable if the transition system is tree-like; otherwise, the stateful method is more effective. In the last decade, optimality has been a guiding principle for developing stateless partial-order reduction algorithms, and without doubt contributed to big progress in the field. In this paper we ask if we can get a similar principle for the stateful approach. We show that in stateful exploration, a polynomially close to optimal partial-order algorithm cannot exist unless P=NP. The result holds even for acyclic programs with just await instructions. This lower bound result justifies systematic study of heuristics for stateful partial-order reduction. We propose a notion of IFS oracle as a useful abstraction. The oracle can be used to get a very simple optimal stateless algorithm, which can then be adapted to a non-optimal stateful algorithm. While in general the oracle problem is NP-hard, we show a simple case where it can be solved in linear time.

Compositional Reasoning for Parametric Probabilistic Automata

Authors: Hannah Mertens, Tim Quatmann, and Joost-Pieter Katoen

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 348, 36th International Conference on Concurrency Theory (CONCUR 2025)

Abstract
We establish an assume-guarantee (AG) framework for compositional reasoning about multi-objective queries in parametric probabilistic automata (pPA) - an extension to probabilistic automata (PA), where transition probabilities are functions over a finite set of parameters. We lift an existing framework for PA to the pPA setting, incorporating asymmetric, circular, and interleaving proof rules. Our approach enables the verification of a broad spectrum of multi-objective queries for pPA, encompassing probabilistic properties and (parametric) expected total rewards. Additionally, we introduce a rule for reasoning about monotonicity in composed pPAs.

Two-Way One-Counter Nets Revisited

Authors: Shaull Almagor, Michaël Cadilhac, and Asaf Yeshurun

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 326, 33rd EACSL Annual Conference on Computer Science Logic (CSL 2025)

Abstract
One Counter Nets (OCNs) are finite-state automata equipped with a counter that cannot become negative, but cannot be explicitly tested for zero. Their close connection to various other models (e.g., PDAs, Vector Addition Systems, and Counter Automata) make them an attractive modeling tool. The two-way variant of OCNs (2-OCNs) was introduced in the 1980’s and shown to be more expressive than OCNs, so much so that the emptiness problem is undecidable already in the deterministic model (2-DOCNs). In a first part, we study the emptiness problem of natural restrictions of 2-OCNs, under the light of modern results about Vector Addition System with States (VASS). We show that emptiness is decidable for 2-OCNs over bounded languages (i.e., languages contained in a₁^* a₂^* ⋯ a_k^*), and decidable and Ackermann-complete for sweeping 2-OCNs, where the head direction only changes at the end-markers. Both decidability results revolve around reducing the problem to VASS reachability, but they rely on strikingly different approaches. In a second part, we study the expressive power of 2-OCNs, showing an array of connections between bounded languages, sweeping 2-OCNs, and semilinear languages. Most noteworthy among these connections, is that the bounded languages recognized by sweeping 2-OCNs are precisely those that are semilinear. Finally, we establish an intricate pumping lemma for 2-DOCNs and use it to show that there are OCN languages that are not 2-DOCN recognizable, improving on the known result that there are such 2-OCN languages.

Swarms of Mobile Robots: Towards Versatility with Safety

Published in: LITES, Volume 8, Issue 2 (2022): Special Issue on Distributed Hybrid Systems. Leibniz Transactions on Embedded Systems, Volume 8, Issue 2

Abstract
We present Pactole, a formal framework to design and prove the correctness of protocols (or the impossibility of their existence) that target mobile robotic swarms. Unlike previous approaches, our methodology unifies in a single formalism the execution model, the problem specification, the protocol, and its proof of correctness. The Pactole framework makes use of the Coq proof assistant, and is specially targeted at protocol designers and problem specifiers, so that a common unambiguous language is used from the very early stages of protocol development. We stress the underlying framework design principles to enable high expressivity and modularity, and provide concrete examples about how the Pactole framework can be used to tackle actual problems, some previously addressed by the Distributed Computing community, but also new problems, while being certified correct.

On the Separability Problem of String Constraints

Authors: Parosh Aziz Abdulla, Mohamed Faouzi Atig, Vrunda Dave, and Shankara Narayanan Krishna

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 171, 31st International Conference on Concurrency Theory (CONCUR 2020)

Abstract
We address the separability problem for straight-line string constraints. The separability problem for languages of a class C by a class S asks: given two languages A and B in C, does there exist a language I in S separating A and B (i.e., I is a superset of A and disjoint from B)? The separability of string constraints is the same as the fundamental problem of interpolation for string constraints. We first show that regular separability of straight line string constraints is undecidable. Our second result is the decidability of the separability problem for straight-line string constraints by piece-wise testable languages, though the precise complexity is open. In our third result, we consider the positive fragment of piece-wise testable languages as a separator, and obtain an ExpSpace algorithm for the separability of a useful class of straight-line string constraints, and a Pspace-hardness result.

Verification of Timed Asynchronous Programs

Authors: Parosh Aziz Abdulla, Mohamed Faouzi Atig, Shankara Narayanan Krishna, and Shaan Vaidya

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 122, 38th IARCS Annual Conference on Foundations of Software Technology and Theoretical Computer Science (FSTTCS 2018)

Abstract
In this paper, we address the verification problem for timed asynchronous programs. We associate to each task, a deadline for its execution. We first show that the control state reachability problem for such class of systems is decidable while the configuration reachability problem is undecidable. Then, we consider the subclass of timed asynchronous programs where tasks are always being executed from the same state. For this subclass, we show that the control state reachability problem is PSPACE-complete. Furthermore, we show the decidability for the configuration reachability problem for the subclass.
