On the Computational Cost of Knowledge Graph Embeddings

Abstract
Over a decade, numerous Knowledge Graph Embedding (KGE) models have been designed and evaluated on reference datasets, always with increasing performance. In this paper, we re-evaluate these models with respect to their computational efficiency during training, by estimating the computational cost of the procedure expressed in floating-point operations. We design a cost model based on analytical expressions and apply it on a collection of 20 KGE models, representative of the state-of-the-art. We show that dimensionality or parameter efficiency, used in the literature to compare models with each other, are not suitable to evaluate the true cost of models. Through fixed-budget experiments, a novel approach to evaluate KGE models based on cost estimates, we re-assess the relative performance of model families compared to the state-of-the-art. Bilinear models such as ComplEx underperform with a low computational budget while hyperbolic linear models appear to offer no particular benefit compared to simpler Euclidian models, especially the MuRE model. Neural models, such as ConvE or CompGCN, achieve reasonable performance in the literature but their high computational cost appears unnecessary when compared with other models. The trade-off between efficiency and expressivity of both linear and neural models is to be further explored.

Simple Circuit Extensions for XOR in PTIME

Abstract
The Minimum Circuit Size Problem for Partial Functions (MCSP^*) is hard assuming the Exponential Time Hypothesis (ETH) (Ilango, 2020). This breakthrough result leveraged a characterization of the optimal {∧, ∨, ¬} circuits for n-bit OR (OR_n) and a reduction from the partial f-Simple Extension Problem where f = OR_n. It remains open to extend that reduction to show ETH-hardness of total MCSP. However, Ilango observed that the total f-Simple Extension Problem is easy whenever f is computed by read-once formulas (like OR_n). Therefore, extending Ilango’s proof to total MCSP would require replacing OR_n with a more complex but similarly well-understood Boolean function. This work shows that the f-Simple Extension problem remains easy when f is the next natural candidate: XOR_n. We first develop a fixed-parameter tractable algorithm for the f-Simple Extension Problem that is efficient whenever the optimal circuits for f are (1) linear in size, (2) polynomially "few" and efficiently enumerable in the truth-table size (up to isomorphism and permutation of inputs), and (3) all have constant bounded fan-out. XOR_n satisfies all three of these conditions. When ¬ gates count towards circuit size, optimal XOR_n circuits are binary trees of n-1 subcircuits computing (¬)XOR₂ (Kombarov, 2011). We extend this characterization when ¬ gates do not contribute the circuit size. Thus, the XOR-Simple Extension Problem is in polynomial time under both measures of circuit complexity. We conclude by discussing conjectures about the complexity of the f-Simple Extension problem for each explicit function f with known and unrestricted circuit lower bounds over the DeMorgan basis. Examining the conditions under which our Simple Extension Solver is efficient, we argue that multiplexer functions (MUX) are the most promising candidate for ETH-hardness of a Simple Extension Problem, towards proving ETH-hardness of total MCSP.

How to Use Nondeterminism in Cryptography

Abstract
Nondeterministic reductions have yielded powerful results in the theory of computational complexity, yet are effectively useless in a cryptographic context. The reason for this is simple, a nondeterministic polynomial time adversary can trivially break almost any cryptographic primitive by simply guessing the "key." In order to use this powerful nondeterministic tool kit in the cryptographic context, we initiate the study of cryptography against adversaries with limited nondeterminism: polynomial time nondeterministic algorithms that are restricted to just a few bits of nondeterminism. We demonstrate that limited nondeterministic security is sufficient to prove two foundational results that have eluded our grasp for decades: dream hardness amplification, and extracting ω(log n) hardcore bits.

Uniformity Testing Under User-Level Local Privacy

Abstract
We initiate the study of distribution testing under user-level local differential privacy, where each of n users contributes m samples from the unknown underlying distribution. This setting, albeit very natural, is significantly more challenging than the usual locally private setting, as for the same parameter ε the privacy guarantee must now apply to a full batch of m data points. While some recent work considers distribution learning in this user-level setting, nothing was known for even the most fundamental testing task, uniformity testing (and its generalization, identity testing). We address this gap, by providing (nearly) sample-optimal user-level LDP algorithms for uniformity and identity testing. Motivated by practical considerations, our main focus is on the private-coin, symmetric setting, which does not require users to share a common random seed nor to have been assigned a globally unique identifier.

New Algebrization Barriers to Circuit Lower Bounds via Communication Complexity of Missing-String

Abstract
The algebrization barrier, proposed by Aaronson and Wigderson (STOC '08, ToCT '09), captures the limitations of many complexity-theoretic techniques based on arithmetization. Notably, several circuit lower bounds that overcome the relativization barrier (Buhrman-Fortnow-Thierauf, CCC '98; Vinodchandran, TCS '05; Santhanam, STOC '07, SICOMP '09) remain subject to the algebrization barrier. In this work, we establish several new algebrization barriers to circuit lower bounds by studying the communication complexity of the following problem, called XOR-Missing-String: For m < 2^{n/2}, Alice gets a list of m strings x₁, … , x_m ∈ {0, 1}ⁿ, Bob gets a list of m strings y₁, … , y_m ∈ {0, 1}ⁿ, and the goal is to output a string s ∈ {0, 1}ⁿ that is not equal to x_i⊕ y_j for any i, j ∈ [m]. 1) We construct an oracle A₁ and its multilinear extension A₁̃ such that PostBPE^{A₁̃} has linear-size A₁-oracle circuits on infinitely many input lengths. That is, proving PostBPE ̸ ⊆ i.o.- SIZE[O(n)] requires non-algebrizing techniques. This barrier follows from a PostBPP communication lower bound for XOR-Missing-String. This is in contrast to the well-known algebrizing lower bound MA_E (⊆ PostBPE) ̸ ⊆ P/_poly. 2) We construct an oracle A₂ and its multilinear extension A₂̃ such that BPE^{A₂̃} has linear-size A₂-oracle circuits on all input lengths. Previously, a similar barrier was demonstrated by Aaronson and Wigderson, but in their result, A₂̃ is only a multiquadratic extension of A₂. Our results show that communication complexity is more useful than previously thought for proving algebrization barriers, as Aaronson and Wigderson wrote that communication-based barriers were "more contrived". This serves as an example of how XOR-Missing-String forms new connections between communication lower bounds and algebrization barriers. 3) Finally, we study algebrization barriers to circuit lower bounds for MA_E. Buhrman, Fortnow, and Thierauf proved a sub-half-exponential circuit lower bound for MA_E via algebrizing techniques. Toward understanding whether the half-exponential bound can be improved, we define a natural subclass of MA_E that includes their hard MA_E language, and prove the following result: For every super-half-exponential function h(n), we construct an oracle A₃ and its multilinear extension A₃̃ such that this natural subclass of MA_E^{A₃̃} has h(n)-size A₃-oracle circuits on all input lengths. This suggests that half-exponential might be the correct barrier for MA_E circuit lower bounds w.r.t. algebrizing techniques.

On Solving Asymmetric Diagonally Dominant Linear Systems in Sublinear Time

Abstract
We initiate a study of solving a row/column diagonally dominant (RDD/CDD) linear system 𝐌x = b in sublinear time, with the goal of estimating t^{⊤}x^{∗} for a given vector t ∈ ℝⁿ and a specific solution x^{∗}. This setting naturally generalizes the study of sublinear-time solvers for symmetric diagonally dominant (SDD) systems [Andoni-Krauthgamer-Pogrow, ITCS 2019] to the asymmetric case, which has remained underexplored despite extensive work on nearly-linear-time solvers for RDD/CDD systems. Our first contributions are characterizations of the problem’s mathematical structure. We express a solution x^{∗} via a Neumann series, prove its convergence, and upper bound the truncation error on this series through a novel quantity of 𝐌, termed the maximum p-norm gap. This quantity generalizes the spectral gap of symmetric matrices and captures how the structure of 𝐌 governs the problem’s computational difficulty. For systems with bounded maximum p-norm gap, we develop a collection of algorithmic results for locally approximating t^{⊤}x^{∗} under various scenarios and error measures. We derive these results by adapting the techniques of random-walk sampling, local push, and their bidirectional combination, which have proved powerful for special cases of solving RDD/CDD systems, particularly estimating PageRank and effective resistance on graphs. Our general framework yields deeper insights, extended results, and improved complexity bounds for these problems. Notably, our perspective provides a unified understanding of Forward Push and Backward Push, two fundamental approaches for estimating random-walk probabilities on graphs. Our framework also inherits the hardness results for sublinear-time SDD solvers and local PageRank computation, establishing lower bounds on the maximum p-norm gap or the accuracy parameter. We hope that our work opens the door for further study into sublinear solvers, local graph algorithms, and directed spectral graph theory.

Abstract
During the workshop, we deeply discussed what CONversational Information ACcess (CONIAC) is and its unique features, proposing a world model abstracting it, and defined the Conversational Agents Framework for Evaluation (CAFE) for the evaluation of CONIAC systems, consisting of six major components: 1) goals of the system’s stakeholders, 2) user tasks to be studied in the evaluation, 3) aspects of the users carrying out the tasks, 4) evaluation criteria to be considered, 5) evaluation methodology to be applied, and 6) measures for the quantitative criteria chosen.

Mining Inter-Document Argument Structures in Scientific Papers for an Argument Web

Abstract
In Argument Mining, predicting argumentative relations between texts (or spans) remains one of the most challenging aspects, even more so in the cross-document setting. This paper makes three key contributions to advance research in this domain. We first extend an existing dataset, the Sci-Arg corpus, by annotating it with explicit inter-document argumentative relations, thereby allowing arguments to be distributed over several documents forming an Argument Web; these new annotations are published using Semantic Web technologies (RDF, OWL). Second, we explore and evaluate three automated approaches for predicting these inter-document argumentative relations, establishing critical baselines on the new dataset. We find that a simple classifier based on discourse indicators with access to context outperforms neural methods. Third, we conduct a comparative analysis of these approaches for both intra- and inter-document settings, identifying statistically significant differences in results that indicate the necessity of distinguishing between these two scenarios. Our findings highlight significant challenges in this complex domain and open crucial avenues for future research on the Argument Web of Science, particularly for those interested in leveraging Semantic Web technologies and knowledge graphs to understand scholarly discourse. With this, we provide the first stepping stones in the form of a benchmark dataset, three baseline methods, and an initial analysis for a systematic exploration of this field relevant to the Web of Data and Science.

Anonymous Self-Stabilising Localisation via Spatial Population Protocols

Abstract
In the distributed localisation problem (DLP), n anonymous robots (agents) A_0, ..., A_{n-1} are located at arbitrary points p_0, ..., p_{n-1} ∈ S, where S is a Euclidean space. Initially, each agent A_i operates within its own coordinate system in S, which may be inconsistent with those of other agents. The primary goal in DLP is for agents to reach a consensus on a unified (jointly agreed) coordinate system, in which all agents receive unique labels (coordinates) that accurately reflect the relative distances between all points p_0, ..., p_{n-1} in S. Extensive research on DLP has primarily focus on the feasibility and complexity of achieving consensus when agents have limited access to inter-agent distances, often due to missing or imprecise data. In contrast, this paper proposes a minimalist, computationally efficient distributed computing model where agents can query any pairwise relative positions, if needed. Specifically, we introduce a novel variant of population protocols, referred to as the spatial population protocols model. In this variant each agent can memorise one or a fixed number of coordinates, and when agents A_i and A_j interact, they can not only exchange their current knowledge but also either determine the distance d_{ij} between them in S (distance query model) or obtain the vector v_{ij} spanning points p_i and p_j (vector query model). We propose and analyse several distributed localisation protocols, including: 1) Leader-based localisation protocol with distance queries We propose and analyse two leader-based localisation protocols that stabilise silently in o(n) time. These protocols leverage an efficient solution to the novel concept of multi-contact epidemic, a natural generalisation of the core communication tool in population protocols, known as the one-way epidemic. 2) Self-stabilising leader localisation protocol with distance queries We show how to effectively utilise a leader election mechanism within the leader-based localisation protocol to get a DLP protocol that self-stabilises silently in time O(n(log n/n)^{1/(k+1)}log n) in k-dimensions. 3) Self-stabilising localisation protocol with vector queries We propose and analyse an optimally fast DLP protocol which self-stabilises silently in O(log n) time.

Pathfinding in Self-Deleting Graphs

Abstract
In this paper, we study the problem of pathfinding on traversal-dependent graphs, i.e., graphs whose edges change depending on the previously visited vertices. In particular, we study self-deleting graphs, introduced by Carmesin et al. [Sarah Carmesin et al., 2023], which consist of a graph G = (V, E) and a function f: V → 2^E, where f(v) is the set of edges that will be deleted after visiting the vertex v. In the (Shortest) Self-Deleting s-t-path problem we are given a self-deleting graph and its vertices s and t, and we are asked to find a (shortest) path from s to t, such that it does not traverse an edge in f(v) after visiting v for any vertex v. We prove that Self-Deleting s-t-path is NP-hard even if the given graph is outerplanar, bipartite, has maximum degree 3, bandwidth 2 and |f(v)| ≤ 1 for each vertex v. We show that Shortest Self-Deleting s-t-path is W[1]-complete parameterized by the length of the sought path and that Self-Deleting s-t-path is W[1]-complete parameterized by the vertex cover number, feedback vertex set number and treedepth. We also show that the problem becomes FPT when we parameterize by the maximum size of f(v) and several structural parameters. Lastly, we show that the problem does not admit a polynomial kernel even for parameterization by the vertex cover number and the maximum size of f(v) combined already on 2-outerplanar graphs.

Resilience in Knowledge Graph Embeddings

Abstract
In recent years, knowledge graphs have gained interest and witnessed widespread applications in various domains, such as information retrieval, question-answering, recommendation systems, amongst others. Large-scale knowledge graphs to this end have demonstrated their utility in effectively representing structured knowledge. To further facilitate the application of machine learning techniques, knowledge graph embedding models have been developed. Such models can transform entities and relationships within knowledge graphs into vectors. However, these embedding models often face challenges related to noise, missing information, distribution shift, adversarial attacks, etc. This can lead to sub-optimal embeddings and incorrect inferences, thereby negatively impacting downstream applications. While the existing literature has focused so far on adversarial attacks on KGE models, the challenges related to the other critical aspects remain unexplored. In this paper, we, first of all, give a unified definition of resilience, encompassing several factors such as generalisation, in-distribution generalization, distribution adaption, and robustness. After formalizing these concepts for machine learning in general, we define them in the context of knowledge graphs. To find the gap in the existing works on resilience in the context of knowledge graphs, we perform a systematic survey, taking into account all these aspects mentioned previously. Our survey results show that most of the existing works focus on a specific aspect of resilience, namely robustness. After categorizing such works based on their respective aspects of resilience, we discuss the challenges and future research directions.

GradSTL: Comprehensive Signal Temporal Logic for Neurosymbolic Reasoning and Learning

Abstract
We present GradSTL, the first fully comprehensive implementation of signal temporal logic (STL) suitable for integration with neurosymbolic learning. In particular, GradSTL can successfully evaluate any STL constraint over any signal, regardless of how it is sampled. Our formally verified approach specifies smooth STL semantics over tensors, with formal proofs of soundness and of correctness of its derivative function. Our implementation is generated automatically from this formalisation, without manual coding, guaranteeing correctness by construction. We show via a case study that using our implementation, a neurosymbolic process learns to satisfy a pre-specified STL constraint. Our approach offers a highly rigorous foundation for integrating signal temporal logic and learning by gradient descent.

Toward an Earth-Independent System for EVA Mission Planning: Integrating Physical Models, Domain Knowledge, and Agentic RAG to Provide Explainable LLM-Based Decision Support

Abstract
We propose a unified framework for an Earth‑independent AI system that provides explainable, context‑aware decision support for EVA mission planning by integrating six core components: a fine‑tuned EVA domain LLM, a retrieval‑augmented knowledge base, a short-term memory store, physical simulation models, an agentic orchestration layer, and a multimodal user interface. To ground our design, we analyze the current roles and substitution potential of the Mission Control Center - identifying which procedural and analytical functions can be automated onboard while preserving human oversight for experiential and strategic tasks. Building on this framework, we introduce RASAGE (Retrieval & Simulation Augmented Guidance Agent for Exploration), a proof‑of‑concept toolset that combines Microsoft Phi‑4‑mini‑instruct with a FAISS (Facebook AI Similarity Search)‑powered EVA knowledge base and custom A* path planning and hypogravity metabolic models to generate grounded, traceable EVA plans. We outline a staged validation strategy to evaluate improvements in route efficiency, metabolic prediction accuracy, anomaly response effectiveness, and crew trust under realistic communication delays. Our findings demonstrate the feasibility of replicating key Mission Control functions onboard, enhancing crew autonomy, reducing cognitive load, and improving safety for deep‑space exploration missions.

Gaze Beyond Limits: Integrating Eye-Tracking and Augmented Reality for Next-Generation Spacesuit Interaction

Abstract
Extravehicular activities (EVAs) are increasingly frequent in human spaceflight, particularly in spacecraft maintenance, scientific research, and planetary exploration. Spacesuits are essential for sustaining astronauts in the harsh environment of space, making their design a key factor in the success of EVA missions. The development of spacesuit technology has traditionally been driven by highly engineered solutions focused on life support, mission adaptability and operational efficiency. Modern spacesuits prioritize maintaining optimal internal temperature, humidity and pressure, as well as withstanding extreme temperature fluctuations and providing robust protection against micrometeoroid impacts and space debris. However, their bulkiness and rigidity impose significant physical strain on astronauts, reducing mobility and dexterity, particularly in tasks requiring fine motor control. The restricted field of view further complicates situational awareness, increasing the cognitive load during high-precision operations. While traditional spacesuits support basic EVA tasks, future space exploration shifting toward long-duration lunar and Martian surface missions demand more adaptive, intelligent, and astronaut-centric designs to overcome current constraints. To explore a next-generation spacesuit, this paper proposed an in-process eye-tracking embedded Augmented Reality (AR) Spacesuit System to enhance astronaut-environment interactions. By leveraging Segment-Anything Models (SAM) and Vision-Language Models (VLMs), we demonstrate a four-step approach to enable top-down gaze detection to minimize erroneous fixation data, gaze-based segmentation of objects of interest, real-time contextual assistance via AR overlays and hands-free operation within the spacesuit. This approach enhances real-time situational awareness and improves EVA task efficiency. We conclude with an exploration of the AR Helmet System’s potential in revolutionizing human-space interaction paradigms for future long-duration deep-space missions and discuss the further optimization of eye-tracking interactions using VLMs to predict astronaut intent and highlight relevant objects preemptively.

In-Situ Visual Programming

Abstract
Most Visual Programming Environments (VPEs) available today aim to make software development more accessible for specific domains, such as automation, business intelligence, data science, education, or real-time media processing. In their niches, VPEs offer several advantages over traditional text-based programming, including shorter training times, immediate visual feedback, and lower barriers to entry. With this work, we introduce In-Situ Visual Programming (ISVP), a novel programming paradigm to enable users to create, modify, and contribute to software via visual programming in physical contexts. User-created and pre-built programs can be attached to and interlinked with physical objects - in an Augmented Reality (AR) environment. We believe that the spatial and contextual proximity of processing code and physical objects will make software development more intuitive, and we argue this position based on two model use cases.
