Maximum Independent Sets in Disk Graphs with Disks in Convex Position

Abstract
For a set 𝒟 of disks in the plane, its disk graph G(𝒟) is the graph with vertex set 𝒟, where two vertices are adjacent if and only if the corresponding disks intersect. Given a set 𝒟 of n weighted disks, computing a maximum independent set of G(𝒟) is NP-hard. In this paper, we present an O(n³log n)-time algorithm for this problem in a special setting in which the disks are in convex position, meaning that every disk appears on the convex hull of 𝒟. This setting has been studied previously for disks of equal radius, for which an O(n^{37/11})-time algorithm was known. Our algorithm also works in the weighted case where disks have weights and the goal is to compute a maximum-weight independent set. As an application of our result, we obtain an O(n³log² n)-time algorithm for the dispersion problem on a set of n disks in convex position: given an integer k, compute a subset of k disks that maximizes the minimum pairwise distance among all disks in the subset.

Near-Linear and Parameterized Approximations for Maximum Cliques in Disk Graphs

Abstract
A disk graph is the intersection graph of (closed) disks in the plane. We consider the classic problem of finding a maximum clique in a disk graph. For general disk graphs, the complexity of this problem is still open, but for unit disk graphs, it is well known to be in P. The currently fastest algorithm runs in time O(n^{7/3+ o(1)}), where n denotes the number of disks [Jared Espenant et al., 2023; J. Mark Keil and Debajyoti Mondal, 2025]. Moreover, for the case of disk graphs with t distinct radii, the problem has also recently been shown to be in XP. More specifically, it is solvable in time O^*(n^{2t}) [J. Mark Keil and Debajyoti Mondal, 2025]. In this paper, we present algorithms with improved running times by allowing for approximate solutions and by using randomization: [(i)] 1) for unit disk graphs, we give an algorithm that, with constant success probability, computes a (1-ε)-approximate maximum clique in expected time Õ(n/ε²); and 2) for disk graphs with t distinct radii, we give a parameterized approximation scheme that, with a constant success probability, computes a (1-ε)-approximate maximum clique in expected time Õ(f(t)⋅ (1/ε)^{O(t)} ⋅ n), for some (exponential) function f(t).

Euclidean Noncrossing Steiner Spanners of Nearly Optimal Sparsity

Abstract
A Euclidean noncrossing Steiner (1+ε)-spanner for a point set P ⊂ ℝ² is a planar straight-line graph that, for any two points a, b ∈ P, contains a path whose length is at most 1+ε times the Euclidean distance between a and b. We construct a Euclidean noncrossing Steiner (1+ε)-spanner with O(n/ε^{3/2}) edges for any set of n points in the plane. This result improves upon the previous best upper bound of O(n/ε⁴) obtained nearly three decades ago. We also establish an almost matching lower bound: There exist n points in the plane for which any Euclidean noncrossing Steiner (1+ε)-spanner has Ω_μ(n/ε^{3/2-μ}) edges for any μ > 0. Our lower bound uses recent generalizations of the Szemerédi-Trotter theorem to disk-tube incidences in geometric measure theory.

Shortest Paths in Geodesic Unit-Disk Graphs

Abstract
Let S be a set of n points in a polygon P with m vertices. The geodesic unit-disk graph G(S) induced by S has vertex set S and contains an edge between two vertices whenever their geodesic distance in P is at most one. In the weighted version, each edge is assigned weight equal to the geodesic distance between its endpoints; in the unweighted version, every edge has weight 1. Given a source point s ∈ S, we study the problem of computing shortest paths from s to all vertices of G(S). To the best of our knowledge, this problem has not been investigated previously. A naive approach constructs G(S) explicitly and then applies a standard shortest path algorithm for general graphs, but this requires quadratic time in the worst case, since G(S) may contain Ω(n²) edges. In this paper, we give the first subquadratic-time algorithms for this problem. For the weighted case, when P is a simple polygon, we obtain an O(m + n log³ n log² m)-time algorithm. For the unweighted case, we provide an O(m + n log n log² m)-time algorithm for simple polygons, and an O(√n (n+m)log(n+m))-time algorithm for polygons with holes.

Charting the Diameter Computation Landscape of Intersection Graphs in 3D and Above

Abstract
Recent research on computing the diameter of geometric intersection graphs has made significant strides, primarily focusing on the 2D case [Duraj et al., 2024; Hsien-Chih Chang et al., 2024; Chan et al., 2025] where truly subquadratic-time algorithms were given for simple objects such as unit-disks and (axis-aligned) squares. However, in three or higher dimensions, there is no known truly subquadratic-time algorithm for any intersection graph of non-trivial objects, even basic ones such as unit balls or (axis-aligned) unit cubes. This was partially explained by the pioneering work of Bringmann et al. [Karl Bringmann et al., 2022] which gave several truly subquadratic lower bounds, notably for unit balls or unit cubes in 3D when the graph diameter Δ is at least Ω(log n), hinting at a pessimistic outlook for the complexity of the diameter problem in higher dimensions. In this paper, we substantially extend the landscape of diameter computation for objects in three and higher dimensions, giving a few positive results. Our highlighted findings include: 1) A truly subquadratic-time algorithm for deciding if the diameter of unit cubes in 3D is at most 3 (Diameter-3 hereafter), the first algorithm of its kind for objects in 3D or higher dimensions. Our algorithm is based on a novel connection to pseudolines, which is of independent interest. 2) A truly subquadratic time lower bound for Diameter-3 of unit balls in 3D under the Orthogonal Vector (OV) hypothesis, giving the first separation between unit balls and unit cubes in the small diameter regime. Previously, computing the diameter for both objects was known to be quadratic hard when the diameter is Ω(log n) [Karl Bringmann et al., 2022]. 3) A near-linear-time algorithm for Diameter-2 of unit cubes in 3D, generalizing the previous result for unit squares in 2D [Karl Bringmann et al., 2022]. 4) A truly subquadratic-time algorithm and lower bound for Diameter-2 and Diameter-3 of rectangular boxes (of arbitrary dimension and sizes), respectively.

Constructing Doppelgängers of Greedy Geometric Spanners in Practice

Abstract
Greedy geometric spanners are considered to be the gold standard for their near-optimal guarantees in terms of sparsity and total weight. However, their inefficient construction poses significant challenges for large-scale geometric networks, especially for low values of stretch factors (< 2). We present Θ-Greedy, a simple and practical parallel algorithm engineered for constructing doppelgängers of greedy geometric spanners that empirically resemble the greedy spanners in key structural and performance metrics, including average degree, degree, and lightness. Unlike approximate greedy spanners, doppelgängers of greedy spanners are almost indistinguishable from the actual greedy spanners in practice. In our experiments, Θ-Greedy consistently produced greedy spanner doppelgängers across a broad range of synthetic and real-world datasets, offering the first practical alternative to the computationally intensive greedy spanners. Θ-Greedy can construct a 1.1-spanner on a 128K-element uniformly distributed point set in well under 5 minutes. In contrast, Bucketing, the most practical greedy spanner algorithm, takes around 3 hours. For million-sized point sets, Θ-Greedy can run to completion in a few hours, making it much faster than Bucketing, which takes days to finish. In extensive experiments on synthetic and real-world datasets, Θ-Greedy delivered speedups of up to 147x over Bucketing while preserving greedy-like sparsity and weight. For broader uses of the algorithm and reproducibility, we share our engineered C++ code.

BFS and Reverse Shortest Paths for Ball Intersection Graphs in Three and Higher Dimensions

Abstract
Let ℬ be a collection of n arbitrary balls in ℝ³, and let G₀(ℬ) be their intersection graph. We provide an algorithm for performing BFS on G₀(ℬ), which runs in O^*(n^{4/3}) time, where the O^*(⋅) notation hides subpolynomial factors. For r ≥ 0, let G_r(ℬ) be the intersection graph of the set ℬ_r = {B+r ∣ B ∈ ℬ}, where B+r is the ball concentric with B whose radius is larger by r than the radius of B. We provide an efficient algorithm for the reverse shortest path (RSP) problem, where we are given two designated balls B_s, B_t of ℬ and a parameter 0 < λ < n, and seek the smallest value r^* for which G_{r^*}(ℬ) contains a path from B_s to B_t of at most λ edges. For the special case of congruent balls (equivalently, for points in ℝ³), the algorithm runs in O^*(n^{29/21}) ≈ O^*(n^{1.381}) time. For the general case, the algorithm runs in O^*(n^{56/39}) ≈ O^*(n^{1.436}) time. We also extend the technique to handle other measures of expansion and higher dimensions.

The Price of Connectivity Augmentation on Planar Graphs

Abstract
Given two classes of graphs, 𝒢₁ ⊆ 𝒢₂, and a c-connected graph G ∈ 𝒢₁, we wish to augment G with a smallest cardinality set of new edges F to obtain a k-connected graph G' = (V,E∪ F) ∈ 𝒢₂. In general, this is the c → k connectivity augmentation problem. Previous research considered variants where 𝒢₁ = 𝒢₂ is the class of planar graphs, plane graphs, or planar straight-line graphs. In all three settings, we prove that the c → k augmentation problem is NP-complete when 2 ≤ c < k ≤ 5. However, the connectivity of the augmented graph G' is at most 5 if 𝒢₂ is limited to planar graphs. We initiate the study of the c → k connectivity augmentation problem for arbitrary k ∈ ℕ, where 𝒢₁ is the class of planar graphs, plane graphs, or planar straight-line graphs, and 𝒢₂ is a beyond-planar class of graphs: 𝓁-planar, 𝓁-plane topological, or 𝓁-plane geometric graphs. We obtain tight bounds on the tradeoffs between the desired connectivity k and the local crossing number 𝓁 of the augmented graph G'. We also show that our hardness results apply to this setting. The connectivity augmentation problem for triangulations is intimately related to edge flips; and the minimum augmentation problem to the flip distance between triangulations. We prove that it is NP-complete to find the minimum flip distance between a given triangulation and a 4-connected triangulation, settling an open problem posed in 2014, and present an EPTAS for this problem.

On Geodesic Disks Enclosing Many Points

Abstract
Let Π(n) be the largest number such that for every set S of n points in a polygon P, there always exist two points x, y ∈ S, where every geodesic disk containing x and y contains Π(n) points of S. We establish upper and lower bounds for Π(n), and show that ⌈n/5⌉ +1 ≤ Π(n) ≤ ⌈n/4⌉ +1. We also show that there always exist two points x, y ∈ S such that every geodesic disk with x and y on its boundary contains at least 16/665(n-2) ≈ ⌈(n-2)/41.6⌉ points both inside and outside the disk. For the special case where the points of S are restricted to be the vertices of a geodesically convex polygon we give a tight bound of ⌈n/3⌉ + 1. We provide the same tight bound when we only consider geodesic disks having x and y as diametral endpoints. Finally, we give a lower bound of ⌈(n-2)/36⌉+2 for the two-colored version of the problem.

The Maximum Clique Problem in a Disk Graph Made Easy

Abstract
A disk graph is an intersection graph of disks in ℝ². Determining the computational complexity of finding a maximum clique in a disk graph is a long-standing open problem. In 1990, Clark, Colbourn, and Johnson gave a polynomial-time algorithm for computing a maximum clique in a unit disk graph. However, finding a maximum clique when disks are of arbitrary size is widely believed to be a challenging open problem. In this paper, we provide a new perspective to examine adjacencies in a disk graph that helps obtain the following results. - We design an 𝒪^*(n^{2k})-time algorithm, where 𝒪^* hides a polynomial factor, to find a maximum clique in a n-vertex disk graph with k different sizes of radii. This is polynomial for every fixed k, and thus settles the open question for the case when k = 2. - Given a set of n unit disks, we show how to compute a maximum clique inside each possible axis-aligned rectangle determined by the disk centers in O(n⁵log n)-time. This is at least a factor of n^{4/3} faster than applying the fastest known algorithm for finding a maximum clique in a unit disk graph for each rectangle independently. - We give an 𝒪^*(n^{2rk})-time algorithm to find a maximum clique in a n-vertex ball graph with k different sizes of radii where the ball centers lie on r parallel planes. This is polynomial for every fixed k and r, and thus contrasts the previously known NP-hardness result for finding a maximum clique in an arbitrary ball graph. - We design an 𝒪^*(n^{2k})-time algorithm to find a maximum clique in the intersection graph of a set S of n L-visible convex polygons, where k is the number of distinct shapes in S. This contrasts the known hardness result on finding a maximum clique in the intersection graph of unit disks and axis-aligned rectangles.

Dynamic Maximum Depth of Geometric Objects

Abstract
Given a set of geometric objects in the plane (rectangles, squares, disks etc.), its maximum depth (or geometric clique) is the largest number of objects with a common intersection. In this paper, we present data structures for dynamically maintaining the maximum depth under insertions and deletions of geometric objects, with sublinear update time. We achieve the following results: - a 1/k-approximate dynamic maximum-depth data structure for (axis-parallel) rectangles with O(n^{1/(k+1)} log n) amortized update time, for any fixed k ∈ ℤ^+. In particular, when k = 1, this gives an exact data structure for rectangles with O(√n log n) amortized update time, almost matching the best known bound for the offline version of the problem. - a (1/2-ε)-approximate dynamic maximum-depth data structure for disks with n^{2/3} log^{O(1)}n amortized update time, for any constant ε > 0. Having exact data structures for disks with sublinear update time is unlikely, since the static maximum-depth problem for disks is 3SUM-hard and thus does not admit subquadratic-time algorithms.

Geometric Spanners of Bounded Tree-Width

Abstract
Given a point set P in the Euclidean space, a geometric t-spanner G is a graph on P such that for every pair of points, the shortest path in G between those points is at most a factor t longer than the Euclidean distance between those points. The value t ≥ 1 is called the dilation of G. Commonly, the aim is to construct a t-spanner with additional desirable properties. In graph theory, a powerful tool to admit efficient algorithms is bounded tree-width. We therefore investigate the problem of computing geometric spanners with bounded tree-width and small dilation t. Let d be a fixed integer and P ⊂ ℝ^d be a point set with n points. We give a first algorithm to compute an 𝒪(n/k^{d/(d-1)})-spanner on P with tree-width at most k. The dilation obtained by the algorithm is asymptotically worst-case optimal for graphs with tree-width k: We show that there is a set of n points such that every spanner of tree-width k has dilation 𝒪(n/k^{d/(d-1)}). We further prove a tight dependency between tree-width and the number of edges in sparse connected planar graphs, which admits, for point sets in ℝ², a plane spanner with tree-width at most k and small maximum vertex degree. Finally, we show an almost tight bound on the minimum dilation of a spanning tree of n equally spaced points on a circle.

Parameterized Geometric Graph Modification with Disk Scaling

Abstract
The parameterized analysis of graph modification problems represents the most extensively studied area within Parameterized Complexity. Given a graph G and an integer k ∈ ℕ as input, the goal is to determine whether we can perform at most k operations on G to transform it into a graph belonging to a specified graph class ℱ. Typical operations are combinatorial and include vertex deletions and edge deletions, insertions, and contractions. However, in many real-world scenarios, when the input graph is constrained to be a geometric intersection graph, the modification of the graph is influenced by changes in the geometric properties of the underlying objects themselves, rather than by combinatorial modifications. It raises the question of whether vertex deletions or adjacency modifications are necessarily the most appropriate modification operations for studying modifications of geometric graphs. We propose the study of the disk intersection graph modification through the scaling of disks. This operation is typical in the realm of topology control but has not yet been explored in the context of Parameterized Complexity. We design parameterized algorithms and kernels for modifying to the most basic graph classes: edgeless, connected, and acyclic. Our technical contributions encompass a novel combination of linear programming, branching, and kernelization techniques, along with a fresh application of bidimensionality theory to analyze the area covered by disks, which may have broader applicability.

Planar Bichromatic Bottleneck Spanning Trees

Abstract
Given a set P of n red and blue points in the plane, a planar bichromatic spanning tree of P is a geometric spanning tree of P, such that each edge connects between a red and a blue point, and no two edges intersect. In the bottleneck planar bichromatic spanning tree problem, the goal is to find a planar bichromatic spanning tree T, such that the length of the longest edge in T is minimized. In this paper, we show that this problem is NP-hard for points in general position. Our main contribution is a polynomial-time (8√2)-approximation algorithm, by showing that any bichromatic spanning tree of bottleneck λ can be converted to a planar bichromatic spanning tree of bottleneck at most 8√2 λ.

Parameterized Study of Steiner Tree on Unit Disk Graphs

Abstract
We study the Steiner Tree problem on unit disk graphs. Given a n vertex unit disk graph G, a subset R⊆ V(G) of t vertices and a positive integer k, the objective is to decide if there exists a tree T in G that spans over all vertices of R and uses at most k vertices from V⧵ R. The vertices of R are referred to as terminals and the vertices of V(G)⧵ R as Steiner vertices. First, we show that the problem is NP-hard. Next, we prove that the Steiner Tree problem on unit disk graphs can be solved in n^{O(√{t+k})} time. We also show that the Steiner Tree problem on unit disk graphs parameterized by k has an FPT algorithm with running time 2^{O(k)}n^{O(1)}. In fact, the algorithms are designed for a more general class of graphs, called clique-grid graphs [Fomin et al., 2019]. We mention that the algorithmic results can be made to work for Steiner Tree on disk graphs with bounded aspect ratio. Finally, we prove that Steiner Tree on disk graphs parameterized by k is W[1]-hard.
