Abstract
Minimally rigid graphs can be decided and embedded in the plane efficiently, i.e. in polynomial time. There is also an efficient randomized parallel algorithm, i.e. in RNC. We present an NC-algorithm to decide whether one-crossing-minor-free graphs are minimally rigid. In the special case of K_{3,3}-free graphs, we also compute an infinitesimally rigid embedding in NC.

Parallel Complexity of Depth-First-Search and Maximal Path in Restricted Graph Classes

Abstract
Constructing a Depth First Search (DFS) tree is a fundamental graph problem, whose parallel complexity is still not settled. Reif showed parallel intractability of lex-first DFS. In contrast, randomized parallel algorithms (and more recently, deterministic quasipolynomial parallel algorithms) are known for constructing a DFS tree in general (di)graphs. However a deterministic parallel algorithm for DFS in general graphs remains an elusive goal. Working towards this, a series of works gave deterministic NC algorithms for DFS in planar graphs and digraphs. We further extend these results to more general graph classes, by providing NC algorithms for (di)graphs of bounded genus, and for undirected H-minor-free graphs where H is a fixed graph with at most one crossing. For the case of (di)graphs of bounded treewidth, we further improve the complexity to a Logspace bound. Constructing a maximal path is a simpler problem (that reduces to DFS) for which no deterministic parallel bounds are known for general graphs. For planar graphs a bound of O(log n) parallel time on a CRCW PRAM (thus in NC²) is known. We improve this bound to Logspace.

Structural Parameterizations of Simultaneous Planarity

Abstract
Given a set of graphs on the same vertex set, the problem Simultaneous Embedding With Fixed Edges (SEFE) asks, whether there exist planar drawings of all input graphs, such that every pair of drawings coincides on their shared subgraph. It is known that SEFE is NP-complete [Elisabeth Gassner et al., 2006], even in the so-called sunflower case, where all pairs of input graphs have the same shared graph G_∩ [Marcus Schaefer, 2012]. Fink, Pfretzschner, and Rutter [Simon D. Fink et al., 2023] recently initiated the study of the parameterized complexity of SEFE in the sunflower case, mainly focusing on structural parameters of G_∩. In this work, we shift the focus towards parameters of the union graph G_∪ that contains the edges of all input graphs. On the positive side, we establish fixed-parameter tractability for the problem with respect to the feedback edge set number of G_∪. We complement this result by showing that it, surprisingly, remains NP-complete even if G_∪ has constant vertex cover number. These results settle two open questions posed by Fink et al. [Simon D. Fink et al., 2023].

Abstract
A fixed set of vertices in the plane may have multiple planar straight-line triangulations in which the degree of each vertex is the same. As such, the degree information does not completely determine the triangulation. We show that even if we know, for each vertex, the number of neighbors in each of the four cardinal directions, the triangulation is not completely determined. We show that counting such triangulations is #P-hard via a reduction from #3-regular bipartite planar vertex cover. pty

Abstract
Very recently, Chambers, Fasy, Hosseini Sereshgi and Löffler [Erin W. Chambers et al., 2025] showed that every Reeb caterpillar admits a crossing-free drawing. It turns out that this does not hold for Reeb lobsters but we show that these graphs admit drawings with at most one crossing per edge.

Polynomial-Time Constant-Approximation for Fair Sum-Of-Radii Clustering

Abstract
In a seminal work, Chierichetti et al. [Chierichetti et al., 2017] introduced the (t,k)-fair clustering problem: Given a set of red points and a set of blue points in a metric space, a clustering is called fair if the number of red points in each cluster is at most t times and at least 1/t times the number of blue points in that cluster. The goal is to compute a fair clustering with at most k clusters that optimizes certain objective function. Considering this problem, they designed a polynomial-time O(1)- and O(t)-approximation for the k-center and the k-median objective, respectively. Recently, Carta et al. [Carta et al., 2024] studied this problem with the sum-of-radii objective and obtained a (6+ε)-approximation with running time O((k log_{1+ε}(k/ε))^k n^O(1)), i.e., fixed-parameter tractable in k. Here n is the input size. In this work, we design the first polynomial-time O(1)-approximation for (t,k)-fair clustering with the sum-of-radii objective, improving the result of Carta et al. Our result places sum-of-radii in the same group of objectives as k-center, that admit polynomial-time O(1)-approximations. This result also implies a polynomial-time O(1)-approximation for the Euclidean version of the problem, for which an f(k)⋅n^O(1)-time (1+ε)-approximation was known due to Drexler et al. [Drexler et al., 2023]. Here f is an exponential function of k. We are also able to extend our result to any arbitrary 𝓁 ≥ 2 number of colors when t = 1. This matches known results for the k-center and k-median objectives in this case. The significant disparity of sum-of-radii compared to k-center and k-median presents several complex challenges, all of which we successfully overcome in our work. Our main contribution is a novel cluster-merging-based analysis technique for sum-of-radii that helps us achieve the constant-approximation bounds.

Subtrajectory Clustering and Coverage Maximization in Cubic Time, or Better

Abstract
Many application areas collect unstructured trajectory data. In subtrajectory clustering, one is interested to find patterns in this data using a hybrid combination of segmentation and clustering. We analyze two variants of this problem based on the well-known SetCover and CoverageMaximization problems. In both variants the set system is induced by metric balls under the Fréchet distance centered at polygonal curves. Our algorithms focus on improving the running time of the update step of the generic greedy algorithm by means of a careful combination of sweeps through a candidate space. In the first variant, we are given a polygonal curve P of complexity n, distance threshold Δ and complexity bound 𝓁 and the goal is to identify a minimum-size set of center curves 𝒞, where each center curve is of complexity at most 𝓁 and every point p on P is covered. A point p on P is covered if it is part of a subtrajectory π_p of P such that there is a center c ∈ 𝒞 whose Fréchet distance to π_p is at most Δ. We present an approximation algorithm for this problem with a running time of 𝒪((n²𝓁 + √{k_Δ}n^{5/2})log²n), where k_Δ is the size of an optimal solution. The algorithm gives a bicriterial approximation guarantee that relaxes the Fréchet distance threshold by a constant factor and the size of the solution by a factor of 𝒪(log n). The second problem variant asks for the maximum fraction of the input curve P that can be covered using k center curves, where k ≤ n is a parameter to the algorithm. For the second problem variant, our techniques lead to an algorithm with a running time of 𝒪((k+𝓁)n²log²n) and similar approximation guarantees. Note that in both algorithms k,k_Δ ∈ O(n) and hence the running time is cubic, or better if k ≪ n.

Hardness of Computation of Quantum Invariants on 3-Manifolds with Restricted Topology

Abstract
Quantum invariants in low-dimensional topology offer a wide variety of valuable invariants about knots and 3-manifolds, presented by explicit formulas that are readily computable. Their computational complexity has been actively studied and is tightly connected to topological quantum computing. In this article, we prove that for any 3-manifold quantum invariant in the Reshetikhin-Turaev model, there is a deterministic polynomial time algorithm that, given as input an arbitrary closed 3-manifold M, outputs a closed 3-manifold M' with the same quantum invariant, such that M' is hyperbolic, contains no low genus embedded incompressible surface, and is presented by a strongly irreducible Heegaard diagram. Our construction relies on properties of Heegaard splittings and the Hempel distance. At the level of computational complexity, this proves that the hardness of computing a given quantum invariant of 3-manifolds is preserved even when severely restricting the topology and the combinatorics of the input. This positively answers a question raised by Samperton [Samperton, 2023].

The Geodesic Fréchet Distance Between Two Curves Bounding a Simple Polygon

Abstract
The Fréchet distance is a popular similarity measure that is well-understood for polygonal curves in ℝ^d: near-quadratic time algorithms exist, and conditional lower bounds suggest that these results cannot be improved significantly, even in one dimension and when approximating with a factor less than three. We consider the special case where the curves bound a simple polygon and distances are measured via geodesics inside this simple polygon. Here the conditional lower bounds do not apply; Efrat et al. (2002) were able to give a near-linear time 2-approximation algorithm. In this paper, we significantly improve upon their result: we present a (1+ε)-approximation algorithm, for any ε > 0, that runs in 𝒪(1/(ε) (n+m log n) log nm log 1/(ε)) time for a simple polygon bounded by two curves with n and m vertices, respectively. To do so, we show how to compute the reachability of specific groups of points in the free space at once, by interpreting the free space as one between separated one-dimensional curves. We solve this one-dimensional problem in near-linear time, generalizing a result by Bringmann and Künnemann (2015). Finally, we give a linear time exact algorithm if the two curves bound a convex polygon.

Separating Two Points with Obstacles in the Plane: Improved Upper and Lower Bounds

Abstract
Given two points in the plane, and a set of "obstacles" given as curves through the plane with assigned weights, we consider the point-separation problem, which asks for a minimum-weight subset of the obstacles separating the two points. A few computational models for this problem have been previously studied. We give a unified approach to this problem in all models via a reduction to a particular shortest-path problem, and obtain improved running times in essentially all cases. In addition, we also give fine-grained lower bounds for many cases.

Improved FPT Approximation for Sum of Radii Clustering with Mergeable Constraints

Abstract
In this work, we study k-min-sum-of-radii (k-MSR) clustering under mergeable constraints. k-MSR seeks to group data points using a set of up to k balls, such that the sum of the radii of the balls is minimized. A clustering constraint is called mergeable if merging two clusters satisfying the constraint, results in a cluster that also satisfies the constraint. Many popularly studied constraints are mergeable, including fairness constraints and lower bound constraints. In our work, we design a (4+ε)-approximation for k-MSR under any given mergeable constraint with runtime 2^{O(k/(ε)⋅log²k/ε)} n⁴, i.e., fixed-parameter tractable in k for constant ε. Our result directly improves upon the FPT (6+ε)-approximation by Carta et al. [Carta et al., 2024]. We also provide a hardness result that excludes the exact solvability of k-MSR under any given mergeable constraint in time f(k)n^o(k), assuming ETH is true.

Testing Whether a Subgraph Is Convex or Isometric

Abstract
We consider the following two algorithmic problems: given a graph G and a subgraph H ⊆ G, decide whether H is an isometric or a geodesically convex subgraph of G. It is relatively easy to see that the problems can be solved by computing the distances between all pairs of vertices. We provide a conditional lower bound showing that, for sparse graphs with n vertices and Θ(n) edges, we cannot expect to solve the problem in O(n^{2-ε}) time for any constant ε > 0. We also show that the problem can be solved in subquadratic time for planar graphs and in near-linear time for graphs of bounded treewidth. Finally, we provide a near-linear time algorithm for the setting where G is a plane graph and H is defined by a few cycles in G.

Parameterized Spanning Tree Congestion

Abstract
In this paper we study the Spanning Tree Congestion problem, where we are given an undirected graph G = (V,E) and are asked to find a spanning tree T of minimum maximum congestion. Here, the congestion of an edge e ∈ T is the number of edges uv ∈ E such that the (unique) path from u to v in T traverses e. We consider this well-studied NP-hard problem from the point of view of (structural) parameterized complexity and obtain the following results: - We resolve a natural open problem by showing that Spanning Tree Congestion is not FPT parameterized by treewidth (under standard assumptions). More strongly, we present a generic reduction which applies to (almost) any parameter of the form "vertex-deletion distance to class 𝒞", thus obtaining W[1]-hardness for more restricted parameters, including tree-depth plus feedback vertex set, or incomparable to treewidth, such as twin cover. Via a slight tweak of the same reduction we also show that the problem is NP-complete on graphs of modular-width 4. - Even though it is known that Spanning Tree Congestion remains NP-hard on instances with only one vertex of unbounded degree, it is currently open whether the problem remains hard on bounded-degree graphs. We resolve this question by showing NP-hardness on graphs of maximum degree 8. - Complementing the problem’s W[1]-hardness for treewidth, we formulate an algorithm that runs in time roughly {(k+w)}^{𝒪(w)}, where k is the desired congestion and w the treewidth, improving a previous argument for parameter k+w that was based on Courcelle’s theorem. This explicit algorithm pays off in two ways: it allows us to obtain an FPT approximation scheme for parameter treewidth, that is, a (1+ε)-approximation running in time roughly {(w/ε)}^{𝒪(w)}; and it leads to an exact FPT algorithm for parameter clique-width+k via a Win/Win argument. - Finally, motivated by the problem’s hardness for most standard structural parameters, we present FPT algorithms for several more restricted cases, namely, for the parameters vertex-deletion distance to clique; vertex integrity; and feedback edge set, in the latter case also achieving a single-exponential running time dependence on the parameter.

Continuous Map Matching to Paths Under Travel Time Constraints

Abstract
In this paper, we study the problem of map matching with travel time constraints. Given a sequence of k spatio-temporal measurements and an embedded path graph with travel time costs, the goal is to snap each measurement to a close-by location in the graph, such that consecutive locations can be reached from one another along the path within the timestamp difference of the respective measurements. This problem arises in public transit data processing as well as in map matching of movement trajectories to general graphs. We show that the classical approach for this problem, which relies on selecting a finite set of candidate locations in the graph for each measurement, cannot guarantee to find a consistent solution. We propose a new algorithm that can deal with an infinite set of candidate locations per measurement. We prove that our algorithm always detects a consistent map matching path (if one exists). Despite the enlarged candidate set, we also demonstrate that our algorithm has superior running time in theory and practice. For a path graph with n nodes, we show that our algorithm runs in 𝒪(k² n log {nk}) and under mild assumptions in 𝒪(k n ^λ + n log³ n) for λ ≈ 0.695. This is a significant improvement over the baseline, which runs in 𝒪(k n²) and which might not even identify a correct solution. The performance of our algorithm hinges on an efficient segment-circle intersection data structure. We describe how to design and implement such a data structure for our application. In the experimental evaluation, we demonstrate the usefulness of our novel algorithm on a diverse set of generated measurements as well as GTFS data.
