Fairness in the k-Server Problem

Abstract
We initiate a formal study of fairness for the k-server problem, where the objective is not only to minimize the total movement cost, but also to distribute the cost equitably among servers. We first define a general notion of (α,β)-fairness, where, for parameters α ≥ 1 and β ≥ 0, no server incurs more than an α/k-fraction of the total cost plus an additive term β. We then show that fairness can be achieved without a loss in competitiveness in both the offline and online settings. In the offline setting, we give a deterministic algorithm that, for any ε > 0, transforms any optimal solution into an (α,β)-fair solution for α = 1 + ε and β = O(diam ⋅ log k / ε), while increasing the cost of the solution by just an additive O(diam ⋅ k log k / ε) term. Here diam is the diameter of the underlying metric space. We give a similar result in the online setting, showing that any competitive algorithm can be transformed into a randomized online algorithm that is fair with high probability against an oblivious adversary and still competitive up to a small loss. The above results leave open a significant question: can fairness be achieved in the online setting, either with a deterministic algorithm or a randomized algorithm, against a fully adaptive adversary? We make progress towards answering this question, showing that the classic deterministic Double Coverage Algorithm (DCA) is fair on line metrics and on tree metrics when k = 2. However, we also show a negative result: DCA fails to be fair for any non-vacuous parameters on general tree metrics. We further show that on uniform metrics (i.e., the paging problem), the deterministic First-In First-Out (FIFO) algorithm is fair. We show that any "marking algorithm", including the Least Recently Used (LRU) algorithm, also satisfies a weaker, but still meaningful notion of fairness.

A Walk on the Wild Side: A Shape-First Methodology for Orthogonal Drawings

Abstract
Several algorithms for the construction of orthogonal drawings of graphs, including those based on the Topology-Shape-Metrics (TSM) paradigm, tend to prioritize the minimization of crossings. This emphasis has two notable side effects: some edges are drawn with unnecessarily long sequences of segments and bends, and the overall drawing area may become excessively large. As a result, the produced drawings often lack geometric uniformity. Moreover, orthogonal crossings are known to have a limited impact on readability, suggesting that crossing minimization may not always be the optimal goal. In this paper, we introduce a methodology that "subverts" the traditional TSM pipeline by focusing on minimizing bends. Given a graph G, we ideally seek to construct a rectilinear drawing of G, that is, an orthogonal drawing with no bends. When not possible, we incrementally subdivide the edges of G by introducing dummy vertices that will (possibly) correspond to bends in the final drawing. This process continues until a rectilinear drawing of a subdivision of the graph is found, after which the final coordinates are computed. We tackle the (NP-complete) rectilinear drawability problem by encoding it as a SAT formula and solving it with state-of-the-art SAT solvers. If the SAT formula is unsatisfiable, we use the solver’s proof to determine which edge to subdivide. Our implementation, domus, which is fairly simple, is evaluated through extensive experiments on small- to medium-sized graphs. The results show that it consistently outperforms ogdf’s TSM-based approach across most standard graph drawing metrics.

A Model for Strategic Ridepooling and Its Integration with Line Planning

Abstract
Ridepooling becomes more and more popular and providing comfortable and easy-to-use transportation (nearly as taxi rides) is known to motivate passengers to use public transport. In this paper we develop a model for strategic planning of ridepooling. Here we decide in which regions ridepooling should be offered and what capacities are needed, neglecting the operational details of dial-a-ride planning. We use this model for integrating ridepooling and line planning, and analyze the integrated model theoretically and numerically. Our experiments show the potential of the approach.

Energy-Efficient Line Planning by Implementing Express Lines

Abstract
While a shift from individual transport to public transport reduces greenhouse gas emissions, public transport itself also consumes a non-negligible amount of energy. Acceleration processes have a high part in that, especially in urban transportation networks where stops are not far from each other. Express lines which skip stops hence use less energy than a vehicle on a normal line on the same route. Additionally, they increase the attractiveness of public transport by reducing travel times. In this paper, we introduce the express line planning problem ELP which extends the well-known line planning problem by the additional planning of express lines and which stops they skip. The problem is stated in a bicriteria setting minimizing the passengers travel time and the energy consumption of the public transport system. We investigate the problem’s complexity and develop two different MIP formulations and show their equivalence. The models are tested numerically on medium sized instances.

Counting Small Induced Subgraphs: Scorpions Are Easy but Not Trivial

Abstract
In the parameterized problem #IndSub(Φ) for fixed graph properties Φ, given as input a graph G and an integer k, the task is to compute the number of induced k-vertex subgraphs satisfying Φ. Dörfler et al. [Algorithmica 2022] and Roth et al. [SICOMP 2024] conjectured that #IndSub(Φ) is #W[1]-hard for all non-meager properties Φ, i.e., properties that are nontrivial for infinitely many k. This conjecture has been confirmed for several restricted types of properties, including all hereditary properties [STOC 2022] and all edge-monotone properties [STOC 2024]. We refute this conjecture by showing that induced k-vertex graphs that are scorpions can be counted in time O(n⁴) for all k. Scorpions were introduced more than 50 years ago in the context of the evasiveness conjecture. A simple variant of this construction results in graph properties that achieve arbitrary intermediate complexity assuming ETH. Moreover, we formulate an updated conjecture on the complexity of #IndSub(Φ) that correctly captures the complexity status of scorpions and related constructions.

Periodic Timetabling: Travel Time vs. Regenerative Energy

Abstract
While it is important to provide attractive public transportation to the passengers allowing short travel times, it should also be a major concern to reduce the amount of energy used by the public transport system. Electrical trains can regenerate energy when braking, which can be used by a nearby accelerating train. Therefore, apart from the minimization of travel times, the maximization of brake-traction overlaps of nearby trains is an important objective in periodic timetabling. Recently, this has been studied in a model allowing small modifications of a nominal timetable. We investigate the problem of finding periodic timetables that are globally good in both objective functions. We show that the general problem is NP-hard, even restricted to a single transfer station and if only travel time is to be minimized, and give an algorithm with an additive error bound for maximizing the brake-traction overlap on this small network. Moreover, we identify special cases in which the problem is solvable in polynomial time. Finally, we demonstrate the trade-off between the two objective functions in an experimental study.

Computing User Equilibria for Schedule-Based Transit Networks with Hard Vehicle Capacities

Abstract
Modelling passenger assignments in public transport networks is a fundamental task for city planners, especially when deliberating network infrastructure decisions. A key aspect of a realistic model for passenger assignments is to integrate selfish routing behaviour of passengers on the one hand, and the limited vehicle capacities on the other hand. We formulate a side-constrained user equilibrium model in a schedule-based time-expanded transit network, where passengers are modelled via a continuum of non-atomic agents that want to travel with a fixed start time from a user-specific origin to a destination. An agent’s route may comprise several rides along given lines, each using vehicles with hard loading capacities. We give a characterization of (side-constrained) user equilibria via a quasi-variational inequality and prove their existence by generalizing a well-known existence result of Bernstein and Smith (Transp. Sci., 1994). We further derive a polynomial time algorithm for single-commodity instances and an exact finite time algorithm for the multi-commodity case. Based on our quasi-variational characterization, we finally devise a fast heuristic computing user equilibria, which is tested on real-world instances based on data gained from the Hamburg S-Bahn system and the Swiss long-distance train network. It turns out that w.r.t. the total travel time, the computed user-equilibria are quite efficient compared to a system optimum, which neglects equilibrium constraints and only minimizes total travel time.

Gray Codes and Symmetric Chains

Abstract
We consider the problem of constructing a cyclic listing of all bitstrings of length 2n+1 with Hamming weights in the interval [n+1-l,n+l], where 1 <= l <= n+1, by flipping a single bit in each step. This is a far-ranging generalization of the well-known middle two levels problem (l=1). We provide a solution for the case l=2 and solve a relaxed version of the problem for general values of l, by constructing cycle factors for those instances. Our proof uses symmetric chain decompositions of the hypercube, a concept known from the theory of posets, and we present several new constructions of such decompositions. In particular, we construct four pairwise edge-disjoint symmetric chain decompositions of the n-dimensional hypercube for any n >= 12.

Generalizing the Kawaguchi-Kyan Bound to Stochastic Parallel Machine Scheduling

Abstract
Minimizing the sum of weighted completion times on m identical parallel machines is one of the most important and classical scheduling problems. For the stochastic variant where processing times of jobs are random variables, Möhring, Schulz, and Uetz (1999) presented the first and still best known approximation result, achieving, for arbitrarily many machines, performance ratio 1+1/2(1+Delta), where Delta is an upper bound on the squared coefficient of variation of the processing times. We prove performance ratio 1+1/2(sqrt(2)-1)(1+Delta) for the same underlying algorithm---the Weighted Shortest Expected Processing Time (WSEPT) rule. For the special case of deterministic scheduling (i.e., Delta=0), our bound matches the tight performance ratio 1/2(1+sqrt(2)) of this algorithm (WSPT rule), derived by Kawaguchi and Kyan in a 1986 landmark paper. We present several further improvements for WSEPT's performance ratio, one of them relying on a carefully refined analysis of WSPT yielding, for every fixed number of machines m, WSPT's exact performance ratio of order 1/2(1+sqrt(2))-O(1/m^2).
