Safe Sequences via Dominators in DAGs for Path-Covering Problems

Abstract
A path-covering problem on a directed acyclic graph (DAG) requires finding a set of source-to-sink paths that cover all the nodes, all the arcs, or subsets thereof, and additionally they are optimal with respect to some function. In this paper we study safe sequences of nodes or arcs, namely sequences that appear in some path of every path cover of a DAG. We show that safe sequences admit a simple characterization via cutnodes. Moreover, we establish a connection between maximal safe sequences and leaf-to-root paths in the source- and sink-dominator trees of the DAG, which may be of independent interest in the extensive literature on dominators. With dominator trees, safe sequences admit an O(n)-size representation and a linear-time output-sensitive enumeration algorithm running in time O(m + o), where n and m are the number of nodes and arcs, respectively, and o is the total length of the maximal safe sequences. We then apply maximal safe sequences to simplify Integer Linear Programs (ILPs) for two path-covering problems, LeastSquares and MinPathError, which are at the core of RNA transcript assembly problems from bioinformatics. On various datasets, maximal safe sequences can be computed in under 0.1 seconds per graph, on average, and ILP solvers whose search space is reduced in this manner exhibit significant speed-ups. For example on graphs with a large width, average speed-ups are in the range 50-250× for MinPathError and in the range 80-350× for LeastSquares. Optimizing ILPs using safe sequences can thus become a fast building block of practical RNA transcript assembly tools, and more generally, of path-covering problems.

Faster Dynamic 2-Edge Connectivity in Directed Graphs

Abstract
Let G be a directed graph with n vertices and m edges. We present a deterministic algorithm that maintains the 2-edge-connected components of G under a sequence of m edge insertions, with a total running time of O(n² log n). This significantly improves upon the previous best bound of O(mn) for graphs that are not very sparse. After each insertion, our algorithm supports the following queries with asymptotically optimal efficiency: - Test in constant time whether two query vertices v and w are 2-edge-connected in G. - Report in O(n) time all the 2-edge-connected components of G. Our approach builds on the recent framework of Georgiadis, Italiano, and Kosinas [FOCS 2024] for computing the 3-edge-connected components of a directed graph in linear time, which leverages the minset-poset technique of Gabow [TALG 2016]. Additionally, we provide a deterministic decremental algorithm for maintaining 2-edge-connectivity in strongly connected directed graphs. Given a sequence of m edge deletions, our algorithm maintains the 2-edge-connected components in total time n^(2+o(1)), while supporting the same queries as the incremental algorithm. This result assumes that the edges of a fixed spanning tree of G and of its reverse graph G^R are not deleted. Previously, the best known bound for the decremental problem was O(mn log n), obtained by a randomized algorithm without restrictions on the deletions. In contrast to prior dynamic algorithms for 2-edge-connectivity in directed graphs, our method avoids the incremental computation of dominator trees, thereby circumventing the known conditional lower bound of Ω(mn).

Building Trustworthy Cognitive Monitoring for Safety-Critical Human Tasks: A Phased Methodological Approach

Abstract
Operators performing high-stakes, safety-critical tasks - such as air traffic controllers, surgeons, or mission control personnel - must maintain exceptional cognitive performance under variable and often stressful conditions. This paper presents a phased methodological approach to building cognitive monitoring systems for such environments. By integrating insights from human factors research, simulation-based training, sensor technologies, and fundamental psychological principles, the proposed framework supports real-time performance assessment with minimum intrusion. The approach begins with simplified simulations and evolves towards operational contexts. Key challenges addressed include variability in workload, the effects of fatigue and stress, thus the need for adaptive monitoring for early warning support mechanisms. The methodology aims to improve situational awareness, reduce human error, and support decision-making without undermining operator autonomy. Ultimately, the work contributes to the development of resilient and transparent systems in domains where human performance is critical to safety.

Movement in Low Gravity (MoLo) – LUNA: Biomechanical Modelling to Mitigate Lunar Surface Operation Risks

Abstract
The Artemis programme seeks to develop and test concepts, hardware and approaches to support long term habitation of the Lunar surface, and future missions to Mars. In preparation for the Artemis missions determination of tasks to be performed, the functional requirements of such tasks and as mission duration extends whether physiological deconditioning becomes functionally significant, compromising the crew member’s ability to perform critical tasks on the surface, and/or upon return to earth [MoLo-LUNA – leveraging the Molo programme (and several other activities) - could become a key supporting activity for LUNA incl. validation of the Puppeteer offloading system itself via creation of a complementary MoLo-LUNA-LAB. Furthermore, the MoLo-LUNA programme could become a key facilitator of simulator suit instrumentation/definition, broader astronaut training activities and mission architecture development – including Artemis mission simulations. By employing a Puppeteer system external to the LUNA chamber hall it will optimise utilisation and cost-effectiveness of LUNA, and as such represents a critical service to future LUNA stakeholders. Furthermore, MoLo-LUNA would generate a unique data set that can be leveraged to predict de-conditioning on the Lunar surface - and thereby optimise functionality, and minimise mission risk – including informing the need for, and prescription of exercise countermeasures on the Lunar Surface and in transit. Thus, MoLo-LUNA offers a unique opportunity to place LUNA, and ESA as a key ongoing provider of evidence to define, optimise and support crew Artemis surface missions.

Higher Connectivity in Directed Graphs (Invited Talk)

Abstract
The computation of edge-connected components in directed and undirected graphs is a well studied problem that is motivated by several applications (see, e.g., [Hiroshi Nagamochi and Toshihide Ibaraki, 2008]). Let G = (V,E) be a strongly connected directed graph with m edges and n vertices. An edge e ∈ E is a strong bridge if G ⧵ e is not strongly connected. More generally, a set of edges C ⊆ E is a cut if G ⧵ C is not strongly connected. If |C| = k then we refer to C as a k-sized cut of G. Hence, a strong bridge is a 1-sized cut of G. A digraph G is k-edge-connected if it has no (k-1)-cuts. We say that two vertices v and w are k-edge-connected, and we denote this relation by v ↔_{k} w, if there are k edge-disjoint directed paths from v to w and k edge-disjoint directed paths from w to v. (Note that a path from v to w and a path from w to v need not be edge-disjoint). By Menger’s theorem [Karl Menger, 1927], v ↔_{k} w if and only if the removal of any set of at most k-1 edges leaves v and w in the same strongly connected component. We define a k-edge-connected component of a digraph G = (V,E) as a maximal subset U ⊆ V such that u ↔_{k} v for all u, v ∈ U. The k-edge-connected components of G form a partition of V, since v ↔_{k} w is an equivalence relation [Loukas Georgiadis et al., 2016]. Connectivity-related problems are known to be much more difficult in directed graphs than in undirected graphs (see, e.g., [Harold N. Gabow, 2016; Monika Henzinger et al., 2020; Ken-Ichi Kawarabayashi and Mikkel Thorup, 2018]). Indeed, there is a fundamental difference in the structure of the cuts in the two scenarios. Specifically, it has been established more than 60 years ago [Gomory and Hu, 1961] that edge cuts in undirected graphs have a nice structure, as defined by the Gomory-Hu tree (or cut tree), which plays a special role in identifying, for any k, the k-edge-connected components of undirected graphs. Furthermore, many efficient algorithms for computing Gomory-Hu trees are available (see e.g., [Amir Abboud et al., 2021; Amir Abboud et al., 2022; Amir Abboud et al., 2023; Chen et al., 2022; Hariharan et al., 2007; Li et al., 2022]). On the contrary, in directed graphs edge cuts have a more complicated structure, and it was proved by Benczúr [Benczúr, 1995] that in this case cut trees do not even exist. It is thus not surprising that, while it is known how to compute the k-edge-connected components of undirected graphs in linear time for k ≤ 5 [Harold N. Gabow, 2000; Zvi Galil and Giuseppe F. Italiano, 1991; Loukas Georgiadis et al., 2021; John E. Hopcroft and Robert E. Tarjan, 1973; Kosinas, 2024; Wojciech Nadara et al., 2021; Hiroshi Nagamochi and Toshihide Ibaraki, 1992; Robert E. Tarjan, 1972; Yung H. Tsin, 2009], the situation is more challenging for directed graphs, where linear-time algorithms are only known for k ≤ 2 [Robert E. Tarjan, 1972; Loukas Georgiadis et al., 2020]. Also, as argued in [Loukas Georgiadis et al., 2023], there is a substantial increase in the inherent difficulty of the problem of computing k-edge-connected components in digraphs for k = 3 compared to k = 2. Indeed, for k = 2 any pair of vertices s,t that are not 2-edge-connected can be separated by only O(n) s-t min-cuts of size 1, for which we can define a total order [Giuseppe F. Italiano et al., 2012]. For k = 3, any pair of vertices s,t that are 2-edge-connected but not 3-edge-connected, can be separated by as many as O(n²) s-t min-cuts of size 2, which are also not totally ordered. This makes it difficult to explore the effect of removing each such cut of size 2 on the strong connectivity of the graph, similar to what was done for the case of k = 2 [Loukas Georgiadis et al., 2020]. Until recently, the best-known bound for computing the k-edge-connected components of a digraph, for constant k ≥ 3, was O(mn) by Nagamochi and Watanabe [Hiroshi Nagamochi and Toshimasa Watanabe, 1993]. Georgiadis et al. [Loukas Georgiadis et al., 2023] presented a randomized (Monte-Carlo) algorithm that computes the 3-edge-connected components of a digraph with m edges in Õ(m^{3/2}) time. Their algorithm involves a nontrivial extension of the framework of [Forster et al., 2020; Nanongkai et al., 2019] for deciding whether a digraph is (k+1)-edge-connected. It applies a local search procedure [Shiri Chechik et al., 2017; Forster et al., 2020] for identifying 2-in or 2-out sets, i.e., vertex sets S ⊆ V such that there are at most 2 edges from V ⧵ S to S or from S to V⧵ S. After finding such a set S, [Loukas Georgiadis et al., 2023] applies an efficient graph operation for replacing S with a gadget of small size that preserves the pairwise connectivity among the vertices of V ⧵ S. As in [Forster et al., 2020; Nanongkai et al., 2019], local search is initiated from sampled edges, but the overall scheme is more complicated to guarantee that enough 2-in sets or 2-out sets are identified that separate vertices that are not 3-edge-connected. Recently, Georgiadis, Italiano and Kosinas [Georgiadis et al., 2024] improved significantly the bound of [Loukas Georgiadis et al., 2023] by showing how to compute the 3-edge-connected components of a digraph in linear time with a deterministic algorithm. Their algorithm differs substantially from [Loukas Georgiadis et al., 2023], as it is based on a new characterization of 2-sized cuts in digraphs, which requires new techniques and a suitable combination of the notions of 2-connectivity-light graphs [Loukas Georgiadis et al., 2023] and of maximally edge-disjoint strongly divergent spanning trees [Loukas Georgiadis and Robert E. Tarjan, 2015; Robert E. Tarjan, 1976]. In particular, Georgiadis, Italiano and Kosinas [Georgiadis et al., 2024] showed how to modify the minset-poset technique of Gabow [Harold N. Gabow, 2016], in order to find the 3-edge-connected components of a digraph with m edges in O(m) time. In the invited talk, I will survey some of this recent work on higher connectivity on directed graphs.

Turing Arena Light: Enhancing Programming Education Through Competitive Environments

Abstract
Turing Arena light, the spiritual successor of Turing Arena, is a contest management system that is designed to be more geared towards the needs of classroom teaching, rather than competitive programming contests. It strives to be as simple as possible, while being very flexible and extensible. The fundamental idea behind Turing Arena light is to have two programs that talk to each other through the standard input and output channels. One of the two programs is the problem manager, which is a program that interacts with a solution to give it the input and evaluate its output, and eventually give a verdict. The other program is the solution, which is the program written by the contestant that is meant to solve the problem. In this paper we describe the architecture and the design of Turing Arena light.

Better Late, Then? The Hardness of Choosing Delays to Meet Passenger Demands in Temporal Graphs

Abstract
In train networks, carefully-chosen delays may be beneficial for certain passengers, who would otherwise miss some connection. Given a simple (directed or undirected) temporal graph and a set of passengers (each specifying a starting vertex, an ending vertex, and a desired arrival time), we ask whether it is possible to delay some of the edges of the temporal graph to realize all the passengers' demands. We call this problem DelayBetter (DB), and study it along with two variants: in δ-DelayBetter, each delay must be of at most δ; in (δ-)Path DB, passengers also fully specify the vertices they should visit on their journey. On the positive side, we give a polynomial-time algorithm for Path DB and δ-Path DB, and obtain as a corollary a polynomial-time algorithm for DB and δ-DB on trees. We also provide an fpt algorithm for both problems parameterized by the size of the graph’s Feedback Edge Set together with the number of passengers. On the negative side, we show NP-completeness of (1-)DB on bounded-degree temporal graphs even when the lifetime is 2, and of (10-)DB on bounded-degree planar temporal graphs of lifetime 19. Our results complement previous work studying reachability problems in temporal graphs with delaying operations. Abstract
The rapidly increasing complexity of embedded systems and the critical impact of non-functional requirements demand the adoption of an appropriate system-level HW/SW co-design methodology. This methodology tries to satisfy all design requirements by simultaneously considering several alternative HW/SW implementations. In this context, early performance estimation approaches are crucial in reducing the design space, thereby minimizing design time and cost. To address the challenge of system-level performance estimation, this work presents and formalizes a novel approach based on a unifying HW/SW performance metric for early execution time estimation. The proposed approach estimates the execution time of a C function when executed by different HW/SW processor technologies. The approach is validated through an extensive experimental study, demonstrating its effectiveness and efficiency in terms of estimation error (i.e., lower than 10%) and estimation time (close to zero) when compared to existing methods in the literature.

Quantitative Graded Semantics and Spectra of Behavioural Metrics

Abstract
Behavioural metrics provide a quantitative refinement of classical two-valued behavioural equivalences on systems with quantitative data, such as metric or probabilistic transition systems. In analogy to the linear-time/ branching-time spectrum of two-valued behavioural equivalences on transition systems, behavioural metrics vary in granularity, and are often characterized by fragments of suitable modal logics. In the latter respect, the quantitative case is, however, more involved than the two-valued one; in fact, we show that probabilistic metric trace distance cannot be characterized by any compositionally defined modal logic with unary modalities. We go on to provide a unifying treatment of spectra of behavioural metrics in the emerging framework of graded monads, working in coalgebraic generality, that is, parametrically in the system type. In the ensuing development of quantitative graded semantics, we introduce algebraic presentations of graded monads on the category of metric spaces. Moreover, we provide a general criterion for a given real-valued modal logic to characterize a given behavioural distance. As a case study, we apply this criterion to obtain a new characteristic modal logic for trace distance in fuzzy metric transition systems.

The Reasonable Ontology Templates Framework

Abstract
Reasonable Ontology Templates (OTTR) is a templating language for representing and instantiating patterns. It is based on simple and generic, but powerful, mechanisms such as recursive macro expansion, term substitution and type systems, and is designed particularly for building and maintaining RDF knowledge graphs and OWL ontologies. In this resource paper, we present the formal specifications that define the OTTR framework. This includes the fundamentals of the OTTR language and the adaptions to make it fit with standard semantic web languages, and two serialization formats developed for semantic web practitioners. We also present the OTTR framework’s support for documenting, publishing and managing template libraries, and for tools for practical bulk instantiation of templates from tabular data and queryable data sources. The functionality of the OTTR framework is available for use through Lutra, an open-source reference implementation, and other independent implementations. We report on the use and impact of OTTR by presenting selected industrial use cases. Finally, we reflect on some design considerations of the language and framework and present ideas for future work.

Abstract
In recent times, the demand for transparency and accountability in AI-driven decisions has intensified, particularly in high-stakes domains like finance and bio-medicine. This focus on the provenance of AI-generated conclusions underscores the need for decision-making processes that are not only transparent but also readily interpretable by humans, to built trust of both users and stakeholders. In this context, the integration of state-of-the-art Large Language Models (LLMs) with logic-oriented Enterprise Knowledge Graphs (EKGs) and the broader scope of Knowledge Representation and Reasoning (KRR) methodologies is currently at the cutting edge of industrial and academic research across numerous data-intensive areas. Indeed, such a synergy is paramount as LLMs bring a layer of adaptability and human-centric understanding that complements the structured insights of EKGs. Conversely, the central role of ontological reasoning is to capture the domain knowledge, accurately handling complex tasks over a given realm of interest, and to infuse the process with transparency and a clear provenance-based explanation of the conclusions drawn, addressing the fundamental challenge of LLMs' inherent opacity and fostering trust and accountability in AI applications. In this paper, we propose a novel neuro-symbolic framework that leverages the underpinnings of provenance in ontological reasoning to enhance state-of-the-art LLMs with domain awareness and explainability, enabling them to act as natural language interfaces to EKGs.

Abstract
Ever since the vision was formulated, the Semantic Web has inspired many generations of innovations. Semantic technologies have been used to share vast amounts of information on the Web, enhance them with semantics to give them meaning, and enable inference and reasoning on them. Throughout the years, semantic technologies, and in particular knowledge graphs, have been used in search engines, data integration, enterprise settings, and machine learning. In this paper, we recap the classical concepts and foundations of the Semantic Web as well as modern and recent concepts and applications, building upon these foundations. The classical topics we cover include knowledge representation, creating and validating knowledge on the Web, reasoning and linking, and distributed querying. We enhance this classical view of the so-called "Semantic Web Layer Cake" with an update of recent concepts that include provenance, security and trust, as well as a discussion of practical impacts from industry-led contributions. We conclude with an outlook on the future directions of the Semantic Web. This is a living document. Abstract
Openly available, collaboratively edited Knowledge Graphs (KGs) are key platforms for the collective management of evolving knowledge. The present work aims t o provide an analysis of the obstacles related to investigating and processing specifically this central aspect of evolution in KGs. To this end, we discuss (i) the dimensions of evolution in KGs, (ii) the observability of evolution in existing, open, collaboratively constructed Knowledge Graphs over time, and (iii) possible metrics to analyse this evolution. We provide an overview of relevant state-of-the-art research, ranging from metrics developed for Knowledge Graphs specifically to potential methods from related fields such as network science. Additionally, we discuss technical approaches - and their current limitations - related to storing, analysing and processing large and evolving KGs in terms of handling typical KG downstream tasks.

Abstract
Knowledge Graphs (KGs) have emerged as fundamental platforms for powering intelligent decision-making and a wide range of Artificial Intelligence (AI) services across major corporations such as Google, Walmart, and AirBnb. KGs complement Machine Learning (ML) algorithms by providing data context and semantics, thereby enabling further inference and question-answering capabilities. The integration of KGs with neuronal learning (e.g., Large Language Models (LLMs)) is currently a topic of active research, commonly named neuro-symbolic AI. Despite the numerous benefits that can be accomplished with KG-based AI, its growing ubiquity within online services may result in the loss of self-determination for citizens as a fundamental societal issue. The more we rely on these technologies, which are often centralised, the less citizens will be able to determine their own destinies. To counter this threat, AI regulation, such as the European Union (EU) AI Act, is being proposed in certain regions. The regulation sets what technologists need to do, leading to questions concerning How the output of AI systems can be trusted? What is needed to ensure that the data fuelling and the inner workings of these artefacts are transparent? How can AI be made accountable for its decision-making? This paper conceptualises the foundational topics and research pillars to support KG-based AI for self-determination. Drawing upon this conceptual framework, challenges and opportunities for citizen self-determination are illustrated and analysed in a real-world scenario. As a result, we propose a research agenda aimed at accomplishing the recommended objectives.

Dynamic Dominators and Low-High Orders in DAGs

Abstract
We consider practical algorithms for maintaining the dominator tree and a low-high order in directed acyclic graphs (DAGs) subject to dynamic operations. Let G be a directed graph with a distinguished start vertex s. The dominator tree D of G is a tree rooted at s, such that a vertex v is an ancestor of a vertex w if and only if all paths from s to w in G include v. The dominator tree is a central tool in program optimization and code generation, and has many applications in other diverse areas including constraint programming, circuit testing, biology, and in algorithms for graph connectivity problems. A low-high order of G is a preorder of D that certifies the correctness of D, and has further applications in connectivity and path-determination problems. We first provide a practical and carefully engineered version of a recent algorithm [ICALP 2017] for maintaining the dominator tree of a DAG through a sequence of edge deletions. The algorithm runs in O(mn) total time and O(m) space, where n is the number of vertices and m is the number of edges before any deletion. In addition, we present a new algorithm that maintains a low-high order of a DAG under edge deletions within the same bounds. Both results extend to the case of reducible graphs (a class that includes DAGs). Furthermore, we present a fully dynamic algorithm for maintaining the dominator tree of a DAG under an intermixed sequence of edge insertions and deletions. Although it does not maintain the O(mn) worst-case bound of the decremental algorithm, our experiments highlight that the fully dynamic algorithm performs very well in practice. Finally, we study the practical efficiency of all our algorithms by conducting an extensive experimental study on real-world and synthetic graphs.
