A Brief History of Parameterized Algorithms for Block-Structured Integer Programs (Invited Talk)

Abstract
Integer Programming (IP) is a fundamental but computationally hard problem. Still, certain efficiently solvable subclasses have been identified over time, most notably totally unimodular IPs in the 1950s, and fixed-dimension IPs in the 1980s. Starting around the year 2000, a stream of research has identified block-structured IPs as yet another tractable subclass. In this paper, we give a brief and incomplete review of this history, with a focus on several of the author’s contributions.

Structural Parameterizations of Simultaneous Planarity

Abstract
Given a set of graphs on the same vertex set, the problem Simultaneous Embedding With Fixed Edges (SEFE) asks, whether there exist planar drawings of all input graphs, such that every pair of drawings coincides on their shared subgraph. It is known that SEFE is NP-complete [Elisabeth Gassner et al., 2006], even in the so-called sunflower case, where all pairs of input graphs have the same shared graph G_∩ [Marcus Schaefer, 2012]. Fink, Pfretzschner, and Rutter [Simon D. Fink et al., 2023] recently initiated the study of the parameterized complexity of SEFE in the sunflower case, mainly focusing on structural parameters of G_∩. In this work, we shift the focus towards parameters of the union graph G_∪ that contains the edges of all input graphs. On the positive side, we establish fixed-parameter tractability for the problem with respect to the feedback edge set number of G_∪. We complement this result by showing that it, surprisingly, remains NP-complete even if G_∪ has constant vertex cover number. These results settle two open questions posed by Fink et al. [Simon D. Fink et al., 2023].

VRP-Inspired Techniques for Discrete Dynamic Berth Allocation and Scheduling

Abstract
The Berth Allocation and Scheduling Problem (BASP) is a critical optimization challenge in maritime logistics, aiming to assign arriving vessels to berths efficiently, while adhering to practical constraints. Exploiting the connection of BASP with the Heterogeneous Vehicle Routing Problem with Time Windows (HVRPTW), we propose a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) formulation for a variant of BASP which is of utmost importance in real-world scenarios: the Dynamic Discrete Berth Allocation and Scheduling Problem with Time Windows (DDBASPTW). Consequently, inspired by the wealth of constructive and improvement heuristics for VRP, we design, implement and experimentally evaluate three constructive heuristics, Nearest Neighbour (NN), Insertion (INS), a quick-and-dirty variant of Insertion (qd-INS), as well as two improvement heuristics, Swap and Reinsert, taking into consideration both the online and the offline scenario with respect to vessel arrivals. Finally, we propose, implement and experimentally evaluate, custom-tailored variants for DDBASPTW of a single-solution metaheuristic, the Adaptive Large Neighborhood Search (ALNS), and of two population-based metaheuristics, the Genetic Algorithm (GA) and the Cuckoo Search Algorithm (CSA), which are aimed to solve the offline version of the problem. An extensive experimental evaluation compares these techniques against a generic state-of-the-art MILP solver. Results demonstrate that certain variants of INS not only are extremely fast and deliver competitive solutions, achieving a practical trade-off between execution times and quality of solutions. The improvement heuristics further refine the initial solutions, especially for weaker constructive approaches, offering a lightweight yet effective enhancement mechanism. The metaheuristics consistently yield high-quality solutions with significantly lower computational times compared to the exact MILP solver, making them well-suited for use in real-time or large-scale operational environments.

On the Approximability of Train Routing and the Min-Max Disjoint Paths Problem

Abstract
In train routing, the headway is the minimum distance that must be maintained between successive trains for safety and robustness. We introduce a model for train routing that requires a fixed headway to be maintained between trains, and study the problem of minimizing the makespan, i.e., the arrival time of the last train, in a single-source single-sink network. For this problem, we first show that there exists an optimal solution where trains move in convoys - that is, the optimal paths for any two trains are either the same or are arc-disjoint. Via this insight, we are able to reduce the approximability of our train routing problem to that of the min-max disjoint paths problem, which asks for a collection of disjoint paths where the maximum length of any path in the collection is as small as possible. While min-max disjoint paths inherits a strong inapproximability result on directed acyclic graphs from the multi-level bottleneck assignment problem, we show that a natural greedy composition approach yields a logarithmic approximation in the number of disjoint paths for series-parallel graphs. We also present an alternative analysis of this approach that yields a guarantee depending on how often the decomposition tree of the series-parallel graph alternates between series and parallel compositions on any root-leaf path.

Hardness of Computation of Quantum Invariants on 3-Manifolds with Restricted Topology

Abstract
Quantum invariants in low-dimensional topology offer a wide variety of valuable invariants about knots and 3-manifolds, presented by explicit formulas that are readily computable. Their computational complexity has been actively studied and is tightly connected to topological quantum computing. In this article, we prove that for any 3-manifold quantum invariant in the Reshetikhin-Turaev model, there is a deterministic polynomial time algorithm that, given as input an arbitrary closed 3-manifold M, outputs a closed 3-manifold M' with the same quantum invariant, such that M' is hyperbolic, contains no low genus embedded incompressible surface, and is presented by a strongly irreducible Heegaard diagram. Our construction relies on properties of Heegaard splittings and the Hempel distance. At the level of computational complexity, this proves that the hardness of computing a given quantum invariant of 3-manifolds is preserved even when severely restricting the topology and the combinatorics of the input. This positively answers a question raised by Samperton [Samperton, 2023].

Improved Approximation Algorithms for Capacitated Vehicle Routing with Fixed Capacity

Abstract
The Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem (CVRP) is one of the most extensively studied problems in combinatorial optimization. Based on customer demand, we distinguish three variants of CVRP: unit-demand, splittable, and unsplittable. In this paper, we consider k-CVRP in general metrics and on general graphs, where k is the vehicle capacity. All three versions are APX-hard for any fixed k ≥ 3. Assume that the approximation ratio of metric TSP is 3/2. We present a (5/2 - Θ(√{1/k}))-approximation algorithm for the splittable and unit-demand cases, and a (5/2 + ln 2 - Θ(√{1/k}))-approximation algorithm for the unsplittable case. Our approximation ratio is better than the previous results when k is less than a sufficiently large value, approximately 1.7 x 10⁷. For small values of k, we design independent and elegant algorithms with further improvements. For the splittable and unit-demand cases, we improve the approximation ratio from 1.792 to 1.500 for k = 3, and from 1.750 to 1.500 for k = 4. For the unsplittable case, we improve the approximation ratio from 1.792 to 1.500 for k = 3, from 2.051 to 1.750 for k = 4, and from 2.249 to 2.157 for k = 5. The approximation ratio for k = 3 surprisingly achieves the same value as in the splittable case. Our techniques, such as EX-ITP - an extension of the classic ITP method, have the potential to improve algorithms for other routing problems as well.

Constraint-Based In-Station Train Dispatching

Abstract
In-station dispatching is the problem of planning the movements of scheduled trains inside a railway station. Effective solutions for in-station dispatching are important for maximising the utilisation of railway infrastructure and for mitigating the impact of incidents and delays in the broader network. In this paper, we explore a constraint-based approach to perform in-station train dispatching. Our extensive empirical analysis of multiple modelling, search strategy, and solver choices, performed over synthetically generated, yet realistic, data, shows that our method outperforms the existing planning-based state-of-the-art approach. In addition, we present different optimisation criteria, which can be effortless defined thanks to the constraint-based approach.

An Architecture for Composite Combinatorial Optimization Solvers

Abstract
In this paper, we introduce elements for MoSCO, a framework for building hybrid metaheuristic-based solvers from a collection of reusable base components. The framework is implemented in Julia and provides a modular architecture for composing solvers through a pipeline-based approach. The modular design of MoSCO supports the creation of reusable components and adaptable solver strategies for various Constraint Satisfaction Problems (CSPs) and Constraint Optimization Problems (COPs). We validate MoSCO’s utility through practical examples, demonstrating its effectiveness in reconstructing established metaheuristics and enabling the creation of novel solver configurations. This work lays the foundation for future developments in automated solver construction and parameter optimization.

A Multi-UAV Router and Scheduler for Executing Spatially Scattered Real-Time Tasks

Abstract
Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs) operating in remote or field scenarios often face limited local processing capacity, necessitating complex real-time monitoring and control via remote processing through mobile edge networks, satellite systems, or UAVs. With recent advancements, UAVs are increasingly being favored for such applications, particularly in isolated areas beyond edge or satellite network coverage. This paper presents a unified UAV scheduling and routing framework for executing geographically distributed real-time CPS tasks under both periodic and aperiodic arrival models. We address the challenge of minimizing the number of UAVs required while ensuring strict adherence to task deadlines across diverse temporal and spatial settings. At first, we propose an efficient heuristic strategy called UAV Scheduling and Routing Algorithm for Real-time Tasks - Periodic Arrivals (USRART-P), which decomposes applications into task instances and sequentially creates per-UAV routes and schedules within a hyperperiod, maximizing the number of task instances each UAV can cover while meeting deadlines. Adapting to this framework, we develop two additional variants to handle aperiodic CPS tasks: USRART-SA for Synchronous Aperiodic Arrivals (common arrival time, distinct deadlines) and USRART-AA for Asynchronous Aperiodic Arrivals (distinct but known arrival times and deadlines). For the case of periodic tasks, we frame the problem as a constraint optimization formulation which aims to minimize the number of UAVs that are required to generate static hyperperiodic travel routes with task execution schedules for all UAVs, and discuss how the formulation can be adapted for aperiodic tasks. Solution to this formulation using standard off-the-shelf solvers achieves optimality but incurs high computational overheads. Through extensive simulations, we show that USRART exhibits high performance across diverse operational scenarios, varying task distributions, execution demands, and spatial layouts. The results emphasize USRART’s flexibility and effectiveness in real-world UAV-based CPS scenarios, especially in environments with limited resources and infrastructure.

Multi-Objective Memory Bandwidth Regulation and Cache Partitioning for Multicore Real-Time Systems

Abstract
Memory bandwidth regulation and cache partitioning are widely used techniques for achieving predictable timing in real-time computing systems. Combined with partitioned scheduling, these methods require careful co-allocation of tasks and resources to cores, as task execution times strongly depend on available allocated resources. To address this challenge, this paper presents a 0-1 linear program for task-resource co-allocation, along with a multi-objective heuristic designed to minimize resource usage while guaranteeing schedulability under a preemptive EDF scheduling policy. Our heuristic employs a multi-layer framework, where an outer layer explores resource allocations using Pareto-pruned search, and an inner layer optimizes task allocation by solving a knapsack problem using dynamic programming. To evaluate the performance of the proposed optimization algorithm, we profile real-world benchmarks on an embedded AMD UltraScale+ ZCU102 platform, with fine-grained resource partitioning enabled by the Jailhouse hypervisor, leveraging cache set partitioning and MemGuard for memory bandwidth regulation. Experiments based on the benchmarking results show that the proposed 0-1 linear program outperforms existing mixed-integer programs by finding more optimal solutions within the same time limit. Moreover, the proposed multi-objective multi-layer heuristic performs consistently better than the state-of-the-art multi-resource-task co-allocation algorithm in terms of schedulability, resource usage, number of non-dominated solutions, and computational efficiency.

Succinct Data Structures for Segments

Abstract
We consider succinct data structures for representing a set of n horizontal line segments in the plane given in rank space to support segment access, segment selection, and segment rank queries. A segment access query finds the segment (x₁, x₂, y) given its y-coordinate (y-coordinates of the segments are distinct), a segment selection query finds the jth smallest segment (the segment with the jth smallest y-coordinate) among the segments crossing the vertical line for a given x-coordinate, and a segment rank query finds the number of segments crossing the vertical line through x-coordinate i with y-coordinate at most y, for a given x and y. This problem is a central component in compressed data structures for persistent strings supporting random access. Our main result is a data structure using 2n lg n + O(n lg n / lg lg n) bits of space and O(lg n / lg lg n) query time for all operations. We show that this space bound is optimal up to lower-order terms. We will also show that the query time for segment rank is optimal. The query time for segment selection is also optimal by a previous bound. To obtain our results, we present a novel segment wavelet tree data structure of independent interest. This structure is inspired by and extends the classic wavelet tree for sequences. This leads to a simple, succinct solution with O(log n) query times. We then extend this solution to obtain optimal query time. Our space lower bound follows from a simple counting argument, and our lower bound for segment rank is obtained by a reduction from 2-dimensional counting.

Better Late, Then? The Hardness of Choosing Delays to Meet Passenger Demands in Temporal Graphs

Abstract
In train networks, carefully-chosen delays may be beneficial for certain passengers, who would otherwise miss some connection. Given a simple (directed or undirected) temporal graph and a set of passengers (each specifying a starting vertex, an ending vertex, and a desired arrival time), we ask whether it is possible to delay some of the edges of the temporal graph to realize all the passengers' demands. We call this problem DelayBetter (DB), and study it along with two variants: in δ-DelayBetter, each delay must be of at most δ; in (δ-)Path DB, passengers also fully specify the vertices they should visit on their journey. On the positive side, we give a polynomial-time algorithm for Path DB and δ-Path DB, and obtain as a corollary a polynomial-time algorithm for DB and δ-DB on trees. We also provide an fpt algorithm for both problems parameterized by the size of the graph’s Feedback Edge Set together with the number of passengers. On the negative side, we show NP-completeness of (1-)DB on bounded-degree temporal graphs even when the lifetime is 2, and of (10-)DB on bounded-degree planar temporal graphs of lifetime 19. Our results complement previous work studying reachability problems in temporal graphs with delaying operations. This is to our knowledge the first such problem in which the aim is to facilitate travel between specific points (as opposed to facilitating or impeding a broadcast from one or many sources).

Fine-Grained Equivalence for Problems Related to Integer Linear Programming

Abstract
Integer Linear Programming with n binary variables and m many 0/1-constraints can be solved in time 2^Õ(m²) poly(n) and it is open whether the dependence on m is optimal. Several seemingly unrelated problems, which include variants of Closest String, Discrepancy Minimization, Set Cover, and Set Packing, can be modelled as Integer Linear Programming with 0/1 constraints to obtain algorithms with the same running time for a natural parameter m in each of the problems. Our main result establishes through fine-grained reductions that these problems are equivalent, meaning that a 2^O(m^{2-ε}) poly(n) algorithm with ε > 0 for one of them implies such an algorithm for all of them. In the setting above, one can alternatively obtain an n^O(m) time algorithm for Integer Linear Programming using a straightforward dynamic programming approach, which can be more efficient if n is relatively small (e.g., subexponential in m). We show that this can be improved to {n'}^O(m) + O(nm), where n' is the number of distinct (i.e., non-symmetric) variables. This dominates both of the aforementioned running times.

A Fast Heuristic Algorithm for the Train Unit Assignment Problem

Abstract
In this paper we study a railway optimization problem known as the Train Unit Assignment Problem. A train unit consists of a self-contained train with an engine and a set of wagons with passenger seats. Given a set of timetabled train trips, each with a required number of passenger seats, and a set of train units, each with a given number of available seats, the problem calls for the best assignment of the train units to the trips, possibly combining more than one train unit for a given trip, that fulfills the seat requests. We propose a heuristic algorithm based on the computation of a lower bound obtained by solving an Integer Linear Programming model that gives the optimal solution in a "peak period" of the day. The performance of the heuristic algorithm is computationally evaluated on real-world instances provided by a regional Italian Train Operator. The results are compared with those of existing methods from the literature, showing that the new method is able to obtain solutions of good quality in much shorter computing times.

Robust Train Routing and Online Re-scheduling

Abstract
Train Routing is a problem that arises in the early phase of the passenger railway planning process, usually several months before operating the trains. The main goal is to assign each train a stopping platform and the corresponding arrival/departure paths through a railway station. It is also called Train Platforming when referring to the platform assignment task. Railway stations often represent bottlenecks and train delays can easily disrupt the routing schedule. Thereby railway stations are responsible for a large part of the delay propagation in the whole network. In this research we present different models to compute robust routing schedules and we study their power in an online context together with different re-scheduling strategies. We also design a simulation framework and use it to evaluate and compare the effectiveness of the proposed robust models and re-scheduling algorithms using real-world data from Rete Ferroviaria Italiana, the main Italian Railway Infrastructure Manager.
