Query Decompositions and All That (Invited Talk)

Abstract
The close relationship between Conjunctive Queries (CQs) and Constraint Satisfaction Problems (CSPs) has long been known. Nevertheless, apart from decomposition methods, research on efficient query evaluation or constraint solving algorithms has developed rather independently. In this article, we illustrate how search algorithms originating from the CSP community can be fruitfully applied to query evaluation - either by further developing the original search algorithms or by combining them with query decomposition methods. It turns out that the resulting approaches may indeed lead to lower time and/or space complexity than previous query evaluation methods.

Homomorphism Indistinguishability, Multiplicity Automata Equivalence, and Polynomial Identity Testing

Authors: Marek Černý and Tim Seppelt

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 364, 43rd International Symposium on Theoretical Aspects of Computer Science (STACS 2026)

Abstract
Two graphs G and H are homomorphism indistinguishable over a graph class ℱ if they admit the same number of homomorphisms from every graph F ∈ ℱ. Many graph isomorphism relaxations such as (quantum) isomorphism and cospectrality can be characterised as homomorphism indistinguishability over specific graph classes. Thereby, the problems HomInd(ℱ) of deciding homomorphism indistinguishability over ℱ subsume diverse graph isomorphism relaxations whose complexities range from logspace to undecidable. Establishing the first general result on the complexity of HomInd(ℱ), Seppelt (MFCS 2024) showed that HomInd(ℱ) is in randomised polynomial time for every graph class ℱ of bounded treewidth that can be defined in counting monadic second-order logic CMSO₂. We show that this algorithm is conditionally optimal, i.e. it cannot be derandomised unless polynomial identity testing is in P. For CMSO₂-definable graph classes ℱ of bounded pathwidth, we improve the previous complexity upper bound for HomInd(ℱ) from P to C_ = L and show that this is tight. Secondarily, we establish a connection between homomorphism indistinguishability and multiplicity automata equivalence which allows us to pinpoint the complexity of the latter problem as C_ = L-complete.

Testing H-Freeness on Sparse Graphs, the Case of Bounded Expansion

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 364, 43rd International Symposium on Theoretical Aspects of Computer Science (STACS 2026)

Abstract
In property testing, a tester makes queries to (an oracle for) a graph and, on a graph having or being far from having a property P, it decides with high probability whether the graph satisfies P or not. Often, testers are restricted to a constant number of queries. While the graph properties for which there exists such a tester are somewhat well characterized in the dense graph model, it is not the case for sparse graphs. In this area, Czumaj and Sohler (FOCS’19) proved that H-freeness (i.e. the property of excluding the graph H as a subgraph) can be tested with constant queries on planar graphs as well as on graph classes excluding a minor. Using results from the sparsity toolkit, we propose a simpler alternative to the proof of Czumaj and Sohler, for a statement generalized to the broader notion of bounded expansion. That is, we prove that for any class 𝒞 with bounded expansion and any graph H, testing H-freeness can be done with constant query complexity on any graph G in 𝒞, where the constant depends on H and 𝒞, but is independent of G. While classes excluding a minor are prime examples of classes with bounded expansion, so are, for example, cubic graphs, graph classes with bounded maximum degree, or graphs of bounded book thickness. Additionally, random graphs with bounded average degree almost surely have bounded expansion.

Weakly-Sparse and Strongly Flip-Flat Classes of Graphs Are Uniformly Almost-Wide

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 363, 34th EACSL Annual Conference on Computer Science Logic (CSL 2026)

Abstract
In this work we take a step towards characterising strongly flip-flat classes of graphs. Strong flip-flatness appears to be the analogue of uniform almost-wideness in the setting of dense classes of graphs. We prove that strongly flip-flat classes of graphs that are weakly sparse are indeed uniformly almost-wide.

New Greedy Spanners and Applications

Authors: Elizaveta Popova and Elad Tzalik

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 362, 17th Innovations in Theoretical Computer Science Conference (ITCS 2026)

Abstract
We present a simple greedy procedure to compute an (α,β)-spanner for a graph G. We then show that this procedure is useful for building fault-tolerant spanners, as well as spanners for weighted graphs. Our first main result is an algorithm that, given a multigraph G, outputs an f edge fault-tolerant (k,k-1)-spanner H of size O(fn^{1+1/k}) which is tight. To our knowledge, this is the first tight result concerning the price of fault tolerance in spanners which are not multiplicative, in any model of faults. Our second main result is a new construction of a spanner for weighted graphs. We show that any weighted graph G has a subgraph H with O(n^{1+1/k}) edges such that any path P of hop-length 𝓁 in G has a replacement path P' in H of weighted length ≤ w(P)+(2k-2)w^(1/2)(P) where w(P) is the total edge weight of P, and w^(1/2) denotes the sum of the largest ⌈𝓁/2⌉ edge weights along P. Moreover, we show such approximation is optimal for shortest paths of hop-length 2. To our knowledge, this is the first construction of a "spanner" for weighted graphs that strictly improves upon the stretch of multiplicative (2k-1)-spanners for all non-adjacent vertex pairs, while maintaining the same size bound. Our technique is based on using clustering and ball-growing, which are methods commonly used in designing spanner algorithms, to analyze simple greedy algorithms. This allows us to combine the flexibility of clustering approaches with the unique properties of the greedy algorithm to get improved bounds. In particular, our methods give a very short proof that the parallel greedy spanner adds O(kn^{1+1/k}) edges, improving upon known bounds.

Parameterized Maximum Node-Disjoint Paths

Authors: Michael Lampis and Manolis Vasilakis

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 358, 20th International Symposium on Parameterized and Exact Computation (IPEC 2025)

Abstract
We revisit the Maximum Node-Disjoint Paths problem, the natural optimization version of the famous Node-Disjoint Paths problem, where we are given an undirected graph G, k (demand) pairs of vertices (s_i, t_i), and an integer 𝓁, and are asked whether there exist at least 𝓁 vertex-disjoint paths in G whose endpoints are given pairs. This problem has been intensely studied from both the approximation and parameterized complexity point of view and is notably known to be intractable by standard structural parameters, such as tree-depth, as well as the combined parameter 𝓁 plus pathwidth. We present several results improving and clarifying this state of the art, with an emphasis towards FPT approximation. Our main positive contribution is to show that the problem’s intractability can be overcome using approximation: We show that for several of the structural parameters for which the problem is hard, most notably tree-depth, the problem admits an efficient FPT approximation scheme, returning a (1-ε)-approximate solution in time f(td,ε)n^𝒪(1). We manage to obtain these results by comprehensively mapping out the structural parameters for which the problem is FPT if 𝓁 is also a parameter, hence showing that understanding 𝓁 as a parameter is key to the problem’s approximability. This, in turn, is a problem we are able to solve via a surprisingly simple color-coding algorithm, which relies on identifying an insightful problem-specific variant of the natural parameter, namely the number of vertices used in the solution. The results above are quite encouraging, as they indicate that in some situations where the problem does not admit an FPT algorithm, it is still solvable almost to optimality in FPT time. A natural question is whether the FPT approximation algorithm we devised for tree-depth can be extended to pathwidth. We resolve this negatively, showing that under the Parameterized Inapproximability Hypothesis no FPT approximation scheme for this parameter is possible, even in time f(pw,ε)n^g(ε). We thus precisely determine the parameter border where the problem transitions from "hard but approximable" to "inapproximable". Lastly, we strengthen existing lower bounds by replacing W[1]-hardness by XNLP-completeness for parameter pathwidth, and improving the n^o(√{td}) ETH-based lower bound for tree-depth to (the optimal) n^o(td).

Tight Bounds for Connected Odd Cycle Transversal Parameterized by Clique-Width

Authors: Narek Bojikian and Stefan Kratsch

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 358, 20th International Symposium on Parameterized and Exact Computation (IPEC 2025)

Abstract
Recently, Bojikian and Kratsch [ICALP 2024] presented a novel approach to tackle connectivity problems parameterized by clique-width (cw), based on counting (modulo 2) the number of representations of partial solutions, while allowing for possibly multiple representations to exist for the same partial solution. Using this technique, they got a SETH-tight bound of 𝒪^*(3^{cw}) for the Steiner Tree problem, which was left open by Hegerfeld and Kratsch [ESA 2023]. We use the same technique to solve the Connected Odd Cycle Transversal problem in time 𝒪^*(12^{cw}). Moreover, we prove that our result is tight by providing a SETH-based lower bound excluding algorithms with running time 𝒪^*((12-ε)^{cw}). This answers another question of Hegerfeld and Kratsch [ESA 2023].

Testing Depth First Search Numbering

Authors: Artur Czumaj, Christian Sohler, and Stefan Walzer

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 351, 33rd Annual European Symposium on Algorithms (ESA 2025)

Abstract
Property Testing is a formal framework to study the computational power and complexity of sampling from combinatorial objects. A central goal in standard graph property testing is to understand which graph properties are testable with sublinear query complexity. Here, a graph property P is testable with a sublinear query complexity if there is an algorithm that makes a sublinear number of queries to the input graph and accepts with probability at least 2/3, if the graph has property P, and rejects with probability at least 2/3 if it is ε-far from every graph that has property P. In this paper, we introduce a new variant of the bounded degree graph model. In this variant, in addition to the standard representation of a bounded degree graph, we assume that every vertex v has a unique label num(v) from {1, … , |V|}, and in addition to the standard queries in the bounded degree graph model, we also allow a property testing algorithm to query for the label of a vertex (but not for a vertex with a given label). Our new model is motivated by certain graph processes such as a DFS traversal, which assign consecutive numbers (labels) to the vertices of the graph. We want to study which of these numberings can be tested in sublinear time. As a first step in understanding such a model, we develop a property testing algorithm for discovery times of a DFS traversal with query complexity O(n^{1/3}/ε) and for constant ε > 0 we give a matching lower bound.

Monotone Bounded-Depth Complexity of Homomorphism Polynomials

Authors: C.S. Bhargav, Shiteng Chen, Radu Curticapean, and Prateek Dwivedi

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 345, 50th International Symposium on Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science (MFCS 2025)

Abstract
For every fixed graph H, it is known that homomorphism counts from H and colorful H-subgraph counts can be determined in O(n^{t+1}) time on n-vertex input graphs G, where t is the treewidth of H. On the other hand, a running time of n^{o(t / log t)} would refute the exponential-time hypothesis. Komarath, Pandey, and Rahul (Algorithmica, 2023) studied algebraic variants of these counting problems, i.e., homomorphism and subgraph polynomials for fixed graphs H. These polynomials are weighted sums over the objects counted above, where each object is weighted by the product of variables corresponding to edges contained in the object. As shown by Komarath et al., the monotone circuit complexity of the homomorphism polynomial for H is Θ(n^{tw(H)+1}). In this paper, we characterize the power of monotone bounded-depth circuits for homomorphism and colorful subgraph polynomials. This leads us to discover a natural hierarchy of graph parameters tw_Δ(H), for fixed Δ ∈ ℕ, which capture the width of tree-decompositions for H when the underlying tree is required to have depth at most Δ. We prove that monotone circuits of product-depth Δ computing the homomorphism polynomial for H require size Θ(n^{tw_Δ(H^{†})+1}), where H^{†} is the graph obtained from H by removing all degree-1 vertices. This allows us to derive an optimal depth hierarchy theorem for monotone bounded-depth circuits through graph-theoretic arguments.

Homomorphism Indistinguishability and Game Comonads for Restricted Conjunction and Requantification

Authors: Georg Schindling

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 345, 50th International Symposium on Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science (MFCS 2025)

Abstract
The notion of homomorphism indistinguishability offers a combinatorial framework for characterizing equivalence relations of graphs, in particular equivalences in counting logics within finite model theory. That is, for certain graph classes, two structures agree on all homomorphism counts from the class if and only if they satisfy the same sentences in a corresponding logic. This perspective often reveals connections between the combinatorial properties of graph classes and the syntactic structure of logical fragments. In this work, we extend this perspective to logics with restricted requantification, refining the stratification of logical resources in finite-variable counting logics. Specifically, we generalize Lovász-type theorems for these logics with either restricted conjunction or bounded quantifier-rank and present new combinatorial proofs of existing results. To this end, we introduce novel path and tree decompositions that incorporate the concept of reusability and develop characterizations based on pursuit-evasion games. Leveraging this framework, we establish that classes of bounded pathwidth and treewidth with reusability constraints are homomorphism distinguishing closed. Finally, we develop a comonadic perspective on requantification by constructing new comonads that encapsulate restricted-reusability pebble games. We show a tight correspondence between their coalgebras and path/tree decompositions, yielding categorical characterizations of reusability in graph decompositions. This unifies logical, combinatorial, and categorical perspectives on the notion of reusability.

(Almost-)Optimal FPT Algorithm and Kernel for T-Cycle on Planar Graphs

Authors: Harmender Gahlawat, Abhishek Rathod, and Meirav Zehavi

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 334, 52nd International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2025)

Abstract
Research of cycles through specific vertices is a central topic in graph theory. In this context, we focus on a well-studied computational problem, T-Cycle: given an undirected n-vertex graph G and a set of k vertices T ⊆ V(G) termed terminals, the objective is to determine whether G contains a simple cycle C through all the terminals. Our contribution is twofold: (i) We provide a 2^{O(√klog k)}⋅ n-time fixed-parameter deterministic algorithm for T-Cycle on planar graphs; (ii) We provide a k^{O(1)}⋅ n-time deterministic kernelization algorithm for T-Cycle on planar graphs where the produced instance is of size klog^{O(1)}k. Both of our algorithms are optimal in terms of both k and n up to (poly)logarithmic factors in k under the ETH. In fact, our algorithms are the first subexponential-time fixed-parameter algorithm for T-Cycle on planar graphs, as well as the first polynomial kernel for T-Cycle on planar graphs. This substantially improves upon/expands the known literature on the parameterized complexity of the problem.

Forbidden Induced Subgraphs for Bounded Shrub-Depth and the Expressive Power of MSO

Authors: Nikolas Mählmann

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 334, 52nd International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2025)

Abstract
The graph parameter shrub-depth is a dense analog of tree-depth. We characterize classes of bounded shrub-depth by forbidden induced subgraphs. The obstructions are well-controlled flips of large half-graphs and of disjoint unions of many long paths. Applying this characterization, we show that on every hereditary class of unbounded shrub-depth, MSO is more expressive than FO. This confirms a conjecture of [Gajarský and Hliněný; LMCS 2015] who proved that on classes of bounded shrub-depth FO and MSO have the same expressive power. Combined, the two results fully characterize the hereditary classes on which FO and MSO coincide, answering an open question by [Elberfeld, Grohe, and Tantau; LICS 2012]. Our work is inspired by the notion of stability from model theory. A graph class 𝒞 is MSO-stable, if no MSO-formula can define arbitrarily long linear orders in graphs from 𝒞. We show that a hereditary graph class is MSO-stable if and only if it has bounded shrub-depth. As a key ingredient, we prove that every hereditary class of unbounded shrub-depth FO-interprets the class of all paths. This improves upon a result of [Ossona de Mendez, Pilipczuk, and Siebertz; Eur. J. Comb. 2025] who showed the same statement for FO-transductions instead of FO-interpretations.

On the VC Dimension of First-Order Logic with Counting and Weight Aggregation

Authors: Steffen van Bergerem and Nicole Schweikardt

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 326, 33rd EACSL Annual Conference on Computer Science Logic (CSL 2025)

Abstract
We prove optimal upper bounds on the Vapnik-Chervonenkis density of formulas in the extensions of first-order logic with counting (FOC_1) and with weight aggregation (FOWA_1) on nowhere dense classes of (vertex- and edge-)weighted finite graphs. This lifts a result of Pilipczuk, Siebertz, and Toruńczyk [Michał Pilipczuk et al., 2018] from first-order logic on ordinary finite graphs to substantially more expressive logics on weighted finite graphs. Moreover, this proves that every FOC_1 formula and every FOWA_1 formula has bounded Vapnik-Chervonenkis dimension on nowhere dense classes of weighted finite graphs; thereby, it lifts a result of Adler and Adler [Hans Adler and Isolde Adler, 2014] from first-order logic to FOC_1 and FOWA_1. Generalising another result of Pilipczuk, Siebertz, and Toruńczyk [Michał Pilipczuk et al., 2018], we also provide an explicit upper bound on the ladder index of FOC_1 and FOWA_1 formulas on nowhere dense classes. This shows that nowhere dense classes of weighted finite graphs are FOC_1-stable and FOWA_1-stable.

Equi-Rank Homomorphism Preservation Theorem on Finite Structures

Authors: Benjamin Rossman

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 326, 33rd EACSL Annual Conference on Computer Science Logic (CSL 2025)

Abstract
The Homomorphism Preservation Theorem (HPT) of classical model theory states that a first-order sentence is preserved under homomorphisms if, and only if, it is equivalent to an existential-positive sentence. This theorem remains valid when restricted to finite structures, as demonstrated by the author in [Rossman, 2008; Rossman, 2017] via distinct model-theoretic and circuit-complexity based proofs. In this paper, we present a third (and significantly simpler) proof of the finitary HPT based on a generalized Cai-Fürer-Immerman construction. This method establishes a tight correspondence between syntactic parameters of a homomorphism-preserved sentence (quantifier rank, variable width, alternation height) and structural parameters of its minimal models (tree-width, tree-depth, decomposition height). Consequently, we prove a conjectured "equi-rank" version of the finitary HPT. In contrast, previous versions of the finitary HPT possess additional properties, but incur blow-ups in the quantifier rank of the equivalent existential-positive sentence.

Extension Preservation on Dense Graph Classes

Authors: Ioannis Eleftheriadis

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 326, 33rd EACSL Annual Conference on Computer Science Logic (CSL 2025)

Abstract
Preservation theorems provide a direct correspondence between the syntactic structure of first-order sentences and the closure properties of their respective classes of models. A line of work has explored preservation theorems relativised to combinatorially tame classes of sparse structures [Atserias et al., JACM 2006; Atserias et al., SiCOMP 2008; Dawar, JCSS 2010; Dawar and Eleftheriadis, MFCS 2024]. In this article we initiate the study of preservation theorems for dense classes of graphs. In contrast to the sparse setting, we show that extension preservation fails on most natural dense classes of low complexity. Nonetheless, we isolate a technical condition which is sufficient for extension preservation to hold, providing a dense analogue to a result of [Atserias et al., SiCOMP 2008].
