Cutoff Theorems for the Equivalence of Parameterized Quantum Circuits

Abstract
Many promising quantum algorithms in economics, medical science, and material science rely on circuits that are parameterized by a large number of angles. To ensure that these algorithms are efficient, these parameterized circuits must be heavily optimized. However, most quantum circuit optimizers are not verified, so this procedure is known to be error-prone. For this reason, there is growing interest in the design of equivalence checking algorithms for parameterized quantum circuits. In this paper, we define a generalized class of parameterized circuits with arbitrary rotations and show that this problem is decidable for cyclotomic gate sets. We propose a cutoff-based procedure which reduces the problem of verifying the equivalence of parameterized quantum circuits to the problem of verifying the equivalence of finitely many parameter-free quantum circuits. Because the number of parameter-free circuits grows exponentially with the number of parameters, we also propose a probabilistic variant of the algorithm for cases when the number of parameters is intractably large. We show that our techniques extend to equivalence modulo global phase, and describe an efficient angle sampling procedure for cyclotomic gate sets.

Deciding Robust Instances of an Escape Problem for Dynamical Systems in Euclidean Space

Authors: Eike Neumann

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 345, 50th International Symposium on Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science (MFCS 2025)

Abstract
We study the problem of deciding whether a point escapes a closed subset of ℝ^d under the iteration of a continuous map f : ℝ^d → ℝ^d in the bit-model of real computation. We give a sound partial decision method for this problem which is complete in the sense that its halting set contains the halting set of all sound partial decision methods for the problem. Equivalently, our decision method terminates on all problem instances whose answer is robust under all sufficiently small perturbations of the function. We further show that the halting set of our algorithm is dense in the set of all problem instances. While our algorithm applies to general continuous functions, we demonstrate that it also yields complete decision methods for much more rigid function families: affine linear systems and quadratic complex polynomials. In the latter case, completeness is subject to the density of hyperbolicity conjecture in complex dynamics. This in particular yields an alternative proof of Hertling’s (2004) conditional answer to a question raised by Penrose (1989) regarding the computability of the Mandelbrot set.

Minimality and Computability of Languages of G-Shifts

Authors: Djamel Eddine Amir and Benjamin Hellouin de Menibus

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 334, 52nd International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2025)

Abstract
Motivated by the notion of strong computable type for sets in computable analysis, we define the notion of strong computable type for G-shifts, where G is a finitely generated group with decidable word problem. A G-shift has strong computable type if one can compute its language from the complement of its language. We obtain a characterization of G-shifts with strong computable type in terms of a notion of minimality with respect to properties with a bounded computational complexity. We provide a self-contained direct proof, and also explain how this characterization can be obtained from an existing similar characterization for sets by Amir and Hoyrup, and discuss its connexions with results by Jeandel on closure spaces. We apply this characterization to several classes of shifts that are minimal with respect to specific properties. This provides a unifying approach that not only generalizes many existing results but also has the potential to yield new findings effortlessly. In contrast to the case of sets, we prove that strong computable type for G-shifts is preserved under products. We conclude by discussing some generalizations and future directions.

Submonoid Membership in n-Dimensional Lamplighter Groups and S-Unit Equations

Authors: Ruiwen Dong

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 334, 52nd International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2025)

Abstract
We show that Submonoid Membership is decidable in n-dimensional lamplighter groups (ℤ/pℤ) ≀ ℤⁿ for any prime p and integer n. More generally, we show decidability of Submonoid Membership in semidirect products of the form 𝒴 ⋊ ℤⁿ, where 𝒴 is any finitely presented module over the Laurent polynomial ring 𝔽_p[X₁^{±}, …, X_n^{±}]. Combined with a result of Shafrir (2024), this gives the first example of a group G and a finite index subgroup G̃ ≤ G, such that Submonoid Membership is decidable in G̃ but undecidable in G. To obtain our decidability result, we reduce Submonoid Membership in 𝒴 ⋊ ℤⁿ to solving S-unit equations over 𝔽_p[X₁^{±}, …, X_n^{±}]-modules. We show that the solution set of such equations is effectively p-automatic, extending a result of Adamczewski and Bell (2012). As an intermediate result, we also obtain that the solution set of the Knapsack Problem in 𝒴 ⋊ ℤⁿ is effectively p-automatic.

Tiling with Three Polygons Is Undecidable

Authors: Erik D. Demaine and Stefan Langerman

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 332, 41st International Symposium on Computational Geometry (SoCG 2025)

Abstract
We prove that the following problem is co-RE-complete and thus undecidable: given three simple polygons, is there a tiling of the plane where every tile is an isometry of one of the three polygons (either allowing or forbidding reflections)? This result improves on the best previous construction which requires five polygons.

Computability of Extender Sets in Multidimensional Subshifts

Authors: Antonin Callard, Léo Paviet Salomon, and Pascal Vanier

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 327, 42nd International Symposium on Theoretical Aspects of Computer Science (STACS 2025)

Abstract
Subshifts are sets of colorings of ℤ^d defined by families of forbidden patterns. Given a subshift and a finite pattern, its extender set is the set of admissible completions of this pattern. It has been conjectured that the behavior of extender sets, and in particular their growth called extender entropy [French and Pavlov, 2019], could provide a way to separate the classes of sofic and effective subshifts. We prove here that both classes have the same possible extender entropies: exactly the Π₃ real numbers of [0,+∞).

Addition and Differentiation of ZX-Diagrams

Authors: Emmanuel Jeandel, Simon Perdrix, and Margarita Veshchezerova

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 228, 7th International Conference on Formal Structures for Computation and Deduction (FSCD 2022)

Abstract
The ZX-calculus is a powerful framework for reasoning in quantum computing. It provides in particular a compact representation of matrices of interests. A peculiar property of the ZX-calculus is the absence of a formal sum allowing the linear combinations of arbitrary ZX-diagrams. The universality of the formalism guarantees however that for any two ZX-diagrams, the sum of their interpretations can be represented by a ZX-diagram. We introduce a general, inductive definition of the addition of ZX-diagrams, relying on the construction of controlled diagrams. Based on this addition technique, we provide an inductive differentiation of ZX-diagrams. Indeed, given a ZX-diagram with variables in the description of its angles, one can differentiate the diagram according to one of these variables. Differentiation is ubiquitous in quantum mechanics and quantum computing (e.g. for solving optimization problems). Technically, differentiation of ZX-diagrams is strongly related to summation as witnessed by the product rules. We also introduce an alternative, non inductive, differentiation technique rather based on the isolation of the variables. Finally, we apply our results to deduce a diagram for an Ising Hamiltonian.

Computability of Finite Simplicial Complexes

Authors: Djamel Eddine Amir and Mathieu Hoyrup

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 229, 49th International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2022)

Abstract
The topological properties of a set have a strong impact on its computability properties. A striking illustration of this idea is given by spheres and closed manifolds: if a set X is homeomorphic to a sphere or a closed manifold, then any algorithm that semicomputes X in some sense can be converted into an algorithm that fully computes X. In other words, the topological properties of X enable one to derive full information about X from partial information about X. In that case, we say that X has computable type. Those results have been obtained by Miller, Iljazović, Sušić and others in the recent years. A similar notion of computable type was also defined for pairs (X,A) in order to cover more spaces, such as compact manifolds with boundary and finite graphs with endpoints. We investigate the higher dimensional analog of graphs, namely the pairs (X,A) where X is a finite simplicial complex and A is a subcomplex of X. We give two topological characterizations of the pairs having computable type. The first one uses a global property of the pair, that we call the ε-surjection property. The second one uses a local property of neighborhoods of vertices, called the surjection property. We give a further characterization for 2-dimensional simplicial complexes, by identifying which local neighborhoods have the surjection property. Using these characterizations, we give non-trivial applications to two famous sets: we prove that the dunce hat does not have computable type whereas Bing’s house does. Important concepts from topology, such as absolute neighborhood retracts and topological cones, play a key role in our proofs.

An Effective Construction for Cut-And-Project Rhombus Tilings with Global n-Fold Rotational Symmetry

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 90, 27th IFIP WG 1.5 International Workshop on Cellular Automata and Discrete Complex Systems (AUTOMATA 2021)

Abstract
We give an explicit and effective construction for rhombus cut-and-project tilings with global n-fold rotational symmetry for any n. This construction is based on the dualization of regular n-fold multigrids. The main point is to prove the regularity of these multigrids, for this we use a result on trigonometric diophantine equations. A SageMath program that computes these tilings and outputs svg files is publicly available in [Lutfalla, 2021].

PBS-Calculus: A Graphical Language for Coherent Control of Quantum Computations

Authors: Alexandre Clément and Simon Perdrix

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 170, 45th International Symposium on Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science (MFCS 2020)

Abstract
We introduce the PBS-calculus to represent and reason on quantum computations involving coherent control of quantum operations. Coherent control, and in particular indefinite causal order, is known to enable multiple computational and communication advantages over classically ordered models like quantum circuits. The PBS-calculus is inspired by quantum optics, in particular the polarising beam splitter (PBS for short). We formalise the syntax and the semantics of the PBS-diagrams, and we equip the language with an equational theory, which is proved to be sound and complete: two diagrams are representing the same quantum evolution if and only if one can be transformed into the other using the rules of the PBS-calculus. Moreover, we show that the equational theory is minimal. Finally, we consider applications like the implementation of controlled permutations and the unrolling of loops.

A Recipe for Quantum Graphical Languages

Authors: Titouan Carette and Emmanuel Jeandel

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 168, 47th International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2020)

Abstract
Different graphical calculi have been proposed to represent quantum computation. First the ZX-calculus [Coecke and Duncan, 2011], followed by the ZW-calculus [Hadzihasanovic, 2015] and then the ZH-calculus [Backens and Kissinger, 2018]. We can wonder if new ZX-like calculi will continue to be proposed forever. This article answers negatively. All those language share a common core structure we call Z^*-algebras. We classify Z^*-algebras up to isomorphism in two dimensional Hilbert spaces and show that they are all variations of the aforementioned calculi. We do the same for linear relations and show that the calculus of [Bonchi et al., 2017] is essentially the unique one.

Completeness of Graphical Languages for Mixed States Quantum Mechanics (Track B: Automata, Logic, Semantics, and Theory of Programming)

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 132, 46th International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2019)

Abstract
There exist several graphical languages for quantum information processing, like quantum circuits, ZX-Calculus, ZW-Calculus, etc. Each of these languages forms a dagger-symmetric monoidal category (dagger-SMC) and comes with an interpretation functor to the dagger-SMC of (finite dimension) Hilbert spaces. In the recent years, one of the main achievements of the categorical approach to quantum mechanics has been to provide several equational theories for most of these graphical languages, making them complete for various fragments of pure quantum mechanics. We address the question of the extension of these languages beyond pure quantum mechanics, in order to reason on mixed states and general quantum operations, i.e. completely positive maps. Intuitively, such an extension relies on the axiomatisation of a discard map which allows one to get rid of a quantum system, operation which is not allowed in pure quantum mechanics. We introduce a new construction, the discard construction, which transforms any dagger-symmetric monoidal category into a symmetric monoidal category equipped with a discard map. Roughly speaking this construction consists in making any isometry causal. Using this construction we provide an extension for several graphical languages that we prove to be complete for general quantum operations. However this construction fails for some fringe cases like the Clifford+T quantum mechanics, as the category does not have enough isometries.

Resource-Bounded Kolmogorov Complexity Provides an Obstacle to Soficness of Multidimensional Shifts

Authors: Julien Destombes and Andrei Romashchenko

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 126, 36th International Symposium on Theoretical Aspects of Computer Science (STACS 2019)

Abstract
We suggest necessary conditions of soficness of multidimensional shifts formulated in terms of resource-bounded Kolmogorov complexity. Using this technique we provide examples of effective and non-sofic shifts on Z^2 with very low block complexity: the number of globally admissible patterns of size n x n grows only as a polynomial in n.

A Characterization of Subshifts with Computable Language

Authors: Emmanuel Jeandel and Pascal Vanier

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 126, 36th International Symposium on Theoretical Aspects of Computer Science (STACS 2019)

Abstract
Subshifts are sets of colorings of Z^d by a finite alphabet that avoid some family of forbidden patterns. We investigate here some analogies with group theory that were first noticed by the first author. In particular we prove several theorems on subshifts inspired by Higman’s embedding theorems of group theory, among which, the fact that subshifts with a computable language can be obtained as restrictions of minimal subshifts of finite type.

ZX-Calculus: Cyclotomic Supplementarity and Incompleteness for Clifford+T Quantum Mechanics

Authors: Emmanuel Jeandel, Simon Perdrix, Renaud Vilmart, and Quanlong Wang

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 83, 42nd International Symposium on Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science (MFCS 2017)

Abstract
The ZX-Calculus is a powerful graphical language for quantum mechanics and quantum information processing. The completeness of the language - i.e. the ability to derive any true equation - is a crucial question. In the quest of a complete ZX-calculus, supplementarity has been recently proved to be necessary for quantum diagram reasoning (MFCS 2016). Roughly speaking, supplementarity consists in merging two subdiagrams when they are parameterized by antipodal angles. We introduce a generalised supplementarity - called cyclotomic supplementarity - which consists in merging n subdiagrams at once, when the n angles divide the circle into equal parts. We show that when n is an odd prime number, the cyclotomic supplementarity cannot be derived, leading to a countable family of new axioms for diagrammatic quantum reasoning. We exhibit another new simple axiom that cannot be derived from the existing rules of the ZX-Calculus, implying in particular the incompleteness of the language for the so-called Clifford+T quantum mechanics. We end up with a new axiomatisation of an extended ZX-Calculus, including an axiom schema for the cyclotomic supplementarity.
