Privacy, Prediction, and Allocation

Abstract
Algorithmic predictions are increasingly used to inform the allocation of scarce resources. The promise of these methods is that, through machine learning, they can better identify the people who would benefit most from interventions. Recently, however, several works have called this assumption into question by demonstrating the existence of settings where simple, unit-level allocation strategies can meet or even exceed the performance of those based on individual-level targeting. Separately, other works have objected to individual-level targeting on privacy grounds, leading to an unusual situation where a single solution, unit-level targeting, is recommended for reasons of both privacy and utility. Motivated by the desire to fully understand the interplay of privacy and targeting levels, we initiate the study of aid allocation systems that satisfy differential privacy, synthesizing existing works on private optimization with the economic models of aid allocation used in the non-private literature. To this end, we investigate private variants of both individual and unit-level allocation strategies in both stochastic and distribution-free settings under a range of constraints on data availability. Through this analysis, we provide clean, interpretable bounds characterizing the tradeoffs between privacy, efficiency, and targeting precision in allocation.

One-Clock Synthesis Problems

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 364, 43rd International Symposium on Theoretical Aspects of Computer Science (STACS 2026)

Abstract
We study a generalisation of Büchi-Landweber games to the timed setting. The winning condition is specified by a non-deterministic timed automaton, and one of the players can elapse time. We perform a systematic study of synthesis problems in all variants of timed games, depending on which player’s winning condition is specified, and which player’s strategy (or controller, a finite-memory strategy) is sought. As our main result we prove ubiquitous undecidability in all the variants, both for strategy and controller synthesis, already for winning conditions specified by one-clock automata. This strengthens and generalises previously known undecidability results. We also fully characterise those cases where finite memory is sufficient to win, namely existence of a strategy implies existence of a controller. All our results are stated in the timed setting, while analogous results hold in the data setting where one-clock automata are replaced by one-register ones.

Modern Datalog: Concepts, Methods, Applications (Invited Paper)

Authors: Markus Krötzsch

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 138, Joint Proceedings of the 20th and 21st Reasoning Web Summer Schools (RW 2024 & RW 2025)

Abstract
Pure Datalog is arguably the most fundamental rule language, elegant and simple, but also often too limited to be useful in practice. This has motivated the introduction of many new expressive features, ranging from datatypes and related functions, over aggregates and semi-ring generalisations, to existential quantifiers and complex terms. In spite of their variety, all these approaches remain true to the nature of Datalog as a direct, pattern-based way of computing on structured data. We therefore find that a modern notion of Datalog is emerging, distinctly different from other approaches of logic programming and with its own set of related methods and applications. In this course, we introduce Datalog and its most common extensions, and explain when and how these features can be used together (which is often, but not always, safe to do). We further look at modern Datalog systems and some of their primary use cases. Hands-on work with Datalog and its extensions is done with the free Datalog engine https://knowsys.github.io/nemo-doc/. The course is accessible to all audiences and does not assume specific prior knowledge.

ASP Essentials: Modelling and Efficient Solving (Invited Paper)

Authors: Giuseppe Mazzotta and Francesco Ricca

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 138, Joint Proceedings of the 20th and 21st Reasoning Web Summer Schools (RW 2024 & RW 2025)

Abstract
Answer Set Programming (ASP) is a logic-based Knowledge Representation and Reasoning (KRR) paradigm that facilitates rapid prototyping of solutions for complex problems. It is particularly effective for tackling Deep Reasoning tasks involving exponentially large search spaces, such as combinatorial search and optimization. While getting started with ASP is relatively easy, mastering its advanced constructs and scaling solutions to real-world problem sizes can be challenging. This paper provides an introduction to ASP, guiding the reader from the fundamentals of the language to the application of programming methodologies and the computation of answer sets. Beyond the core framework, the paper also examines selected extensions of ASP that enable the modeling of complex problems, as well as compilation techniques designed to enhance solving efficiency. Furthermore, it mentions some recent tools that combine ASP with LLMs.

Reasoning About Time in DatalogMTL: Course Notes (Invited Paper)

Authors: Przemysław Andrzej Wałęga

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 138, Joint Proceedings of the 20th and 21st Reasoning Web Summer Schools (RW 2024 & RW 2025)

Abstract
Many real-world applications, such as those in healthcare, finance, and logistics, require reasoning over temporal data. Standard rule-based languages like Datalog, however, lack explicit mechanisms for handling time and temporal dependencies. In this chapter, we discussDatalogMTL, an extension of Datalog with operators frommetric temporal logic that allow to express complex temporal properties. We focus on reasoning algorithms for DatalogMTL, discussing bothmaterialisation, based on fixpoint applications of the immediate consequence operator, and anovel saturation-based extensionthat detects and halts infinite derivations, ensuring both completeness and termination of reasoning.

Reachability of Independent Sets and Vertex Covers Under Extended Reconfiguration Rules

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 359, 36th International Symposium on Algorithms and Computation (ISAAC 2025)

Abstract
In reconfiguration problems, we are given two feasible solutions to a graph problem and asked whether one can be transformed into the other via a sequence of feasible intermediate solutions under a given reconfiguration rule. While earlier work focused on modifying a single element at a time, recent studies have started examining how different rules impact computational complexity. Motivated by recent progress, we study Independent Set Reconfiguration (ISR) and Vertex Cover Reconfiguration (VCR) under the k-Token Jumping (k-TJ) and k-Token Sliding (k-TS) models. In k-TJ, up to k vertices may be replaced, while k-TS additionally requires a perfect matching between removed and added vertices. It is known that the complexity of ISR crucially depends on k, ranging from PSPACE-complete and NP-complete to polynomial-time solvable. In this paper, we further explore the gradient of computational complexity of the problems. We first show that ISR under k-TJ with k = |I| - μ remains NP-hard when μ is any fixed positive integer and the input graph is restricted to graphs of maximum degree 3 or planar graphs of maximum degree 4, where |I| is the size of feasible solutions. In addition, we prove that the problem belongs to NP not only for μ = O(1) but also for μ = O(log |I|). In contrast, we show that VCR under k-TJ is in XP when parameterized by μ = |S| - k, where |S| is the size of feasible solutions. Furthermore, we establish the PSPACE-completeness of ISR and VCR under both k-TJ and k-TS on several graph classes, for fixed k as well as superconstant k relative to the size of feasible solutions.

Coloring Reconfiguration Under Color Swapping

Authors: Janosch Fuchs, Rin Saito, Tatsuhiro Suga, Takahiro Suzuki, and Yuma Tamura

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 359, 36th International Symposium on Algorithms and Computation (ISAAC 2025)

Abstract
In the Coloring Reconfiguration problem, we are given two proper k-colorings of a graph and asked to decide whether one can be transformed into the other by repeatedly applying a specified recoloring rule, while maintaining a proper coloring throughout. For this problem, two recoloring rules have been widely studied: single-vertex recoloring and Kempe chain recoloring. In this paper, we introduce a new rule, called color swapping, where two adjacent vertices may exchange their colors, so that the resulting coloring remains proper, and study the computational complexity of the problem under this rule. We first establish a complexity dichotomy with respect to k: the problem is solvable in polynomial time for k ≤ 2, and is PSPACE-complete for k ≥ 3. We further show that the problem remains PSPACE-complete even on restricted graph classes, including bipartite graphs, split graphs, and planar graphs of bounded degree. In contrast, we present polynomial-time algorithms for several graph classes: for paths when k = 3, for split graphs when k is fixed, and for cographs when k is arbitrary.

Beyond Static Diagnosis: A Temporal ASP Framework for HVAC Fault Detection

Authors: Roxane Koitz-Hristov, Liliana Marie Prikler, and Franz Wotawa

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 136, 36th International Conference on Principles of Diagnosis and Resilient Systems (DX 2025)

Abstract
Improving sustainability in the building sector requires more efficient operation of energy-intensive systems such as Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC). We present a novel diagnostic framework for HVAC systems that integrates Answer Set Programming (ASP) with Functional Event Calculus (FEC). Our approach exploits the declarative nature of ASP for modeling and incorporates FEC to capture temporal system dynamics. We demonstrate the feasibility of our approach through a case study on a real-world heating system, where we model key components and system constraints. Our evaluation on nominal and faulty traces shows that exploiting ASP in combination with FEC can identify plausible diagnoses. Moreover, we explore the difference between static and rolling-window strategies and provide insights into runtime versus soundness on those variants. Our work provides a step toward the practical application of ASP-based temporal reasoning in building diagnostics.

The Temporal Vadalog System (Short Paper)

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 355, 32nd International Symposium on Temporal Representation and Reasoning (TIME 2025)

Abstract
The recent resurgence of the Datalog language in the Knowledge Representation and Reasoning community has paved the way for a very promising proposal for temporal extension. DatalogMTL (Datalog with Metric Temporal Operators) is a language that offers a good trade-off between computational complexity and expressive power. However, existing implementations are still preliminary or prototypical. In this extended abstract, we give a brief overview of Temporal Vadalog, a system supporting reasoning over DatalogMTL programs built upon an engineered architecture and adopted in production scenarios in the financial setting.

Triangles Improve 0.878 Approximation for Maxcut

Authors: Fredie George, Anand Louis, and Rameesh Paul

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 353, Approximation, Randomization, and Combinatorial Optimization. Algorithms and Techniques (APPROX/RANDOM 2025)

Abstract
Maxcut is a fundamental problem in graph algorithms, extensively studied for its theoretical and practical significance. The goal is to partition the vertex set of a graph G = (V, E) into disjoint subsets S and V⧵S so as to maximize the number of edges crossing the cut (S,V⧵S). The seminal work of Goemans and Williamson [Goemans and Williamson, 1995] introduced a semidefinite programming (SDP) based algorithm achieving a α_{GW} ≈ 0.87856-approximation for general graphs, guaranteed to be optimal under the Unique Games Conjecture [Khot, 2002; Khot et al., 2007]. We revisit the Goemans–Williamson SDP and prove that the standard Maxcut SDP achieves a (α_{GW} + Ω(1))-approximation whenever the input graph contains Ω(|E|) edge-disjoint triangles. Our analysis builds on classical rounding techniques studied in [Goemans and Williamson, 1995; Zwick, 1999] and introduces a refined understanding of the SDP solution structure in regimes where the previous guarantees are tight. Our result identifies a simple combinatorial property that may be satisfied by many natural graph classes. As applications, we show that unit ball graphs and graphs satisfying a spectral transitivity condition (as studied in [Gupta et al., 2016; Basu et al., 2024]) meet our structural criterion, and therefore we get better than α_{GW} approximation guarantees for them. Our algorithm runs in nearly linear time 𝒪̃(|E|), offering a more practical alternative to the PTAS of [Jansen et al., 2005] for unit ball graphs, which has exponential dependence on the approximation parameter.

Deciding Termination of Simple Randomized Loops

Authors: Éléanore Meyer and Jürgen Giesl

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 345, 50th International Symposium on Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science (MFCS 2025)

Abstract
We show that universal positive almost sure termination (UPAST) is decidable for a class of simple randomized programs, i.e., it is decidable whether the expected runtime of such a program is finite for all inputs. Our class contains all programs that consist of a single loop, with a linear loop guard and a loop body composed of two linear commuting and diagonalizable updates. In each iteration of the loop, the update to be carried out is picked at random, according to a fixed probability. We show the decidability of UPAST for this class of programs, where the program’s variables and inputs may range over various sub-semirings of the real numbers. In this way, we extend a line of research initiated by Tiwari in 2004 into the realm of randomized programs.

Monitorability for the Modal Mu-Calculus over Systems with Data: From Practice to Theory

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 348, 36th International Conference on Concurrency Theory (CONCUR 2025)

Abstract
Runtime verification consists in checking whether a system satisfies a given specification by observing the execution trace it produces. In the regular setting, the modal μ-calculus provides a versatile formalism for expressing specifications of the control flow of the system. This paper focuses on the data flow and studies an extension of that logic that allows it to express data-dependent properties, identifying fragments that can be verified at runtime and with what correctness guarantees. The logic studied here is closely related with register automata with guessing. That correspondence yields a monitor synthesis algorithm, and a strict hierarchy among the various fragments of the logic, in contrast to the regular setting. We then exhibit a fragment of the logic that can express all monitorable formulae in the logic without greatest fixed-points but not in the full logic, and show this is the best we can get.

A Direct Reduction from Stochastic Parity Games to Simple Stochastic Games

Authors: Raphaël Berthon, Joost-Pieter Katoen, and Zihan Zhou

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 348, 36th International Conference on Concurrency Theory (CONCUR 2025)

Abstract
Significant progress has been recently achieved in developing efficient solutions for simple stochastic games (SSGs), focusing on reachability objectives. While reductions from stochastic parity games (SPGs) to SSGs have been presented in the literature through the use of multiple intermediate game models, a direct and simple reduction has been notably absent. This paper introduces a novel and direct polynomial-time reduction from quantitative SPGs to quantitative SSGs. By leveraging a gadget-based transformation that effectively removes the priority function, we construct an SSG that simulates the behavior of a given SPG. We formally establish the correctness of our direct reduction. Furthermore, we demonstrate that under binary encoding this reduction is polynomial, thereby directly corroborating the known NP ∩ coNP complexity of SPGs and providing new understanding in the relationship between parity and reachability objectives in turn-based stochastic games.

Rule-Based Temporal Reasoning: Exploring DatalogMTL (Invited Talk)

Authors: Przemysław Andrzej Wałęga

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 318, 31st International Symposium on Temporal Representation and Reasoning (TIME 2024)

Abstract
I will introduce DatalogMTL - an extension of Datalog, augmenting it with operators known from metric temporal logic (MTL). DatalogMTL is an expressive language which allows us for complex temporal reasoning over a dense timeline and, at the same time, remains decidable. I will provide an overview of research on DatalogMTL by discussing its computational complexity, syntactic and semantic modifications, practical reasoning approaches, applications, and future research directions.

Abstract
In the last decade, there has been a growing interest in applying AI technologies to implement complex data analytics over data streams. To this end, researchers in various fields have been organising a yearly event called the "Stream Reasoning Workshop" to share perspectives, challenges, and experiences around this topic. In this paper, the previous organisers of the workshops and other community members provide a summary of the main research results that have been discussed during the first six editions of the event. These results can be categorised into four main research areas: The first is concerned with the technological challenges related to handling large data streams. The second area aims at adapting and extending existing semantic technologies to data streams. The third and fourth areas focus on how to implement reasoning techniques, either considering deductive or inductive techniques, to extract new and valuable knowledge from the data in the stream. This summary is written not only to provide a crystallisation of the field, but also to point out distinctive traits of the stream reasoning community. Moreover, it also provides a foundation for future research by enumerating a list of use cases and open challenges, to stimulate others to join this exciting research area.
