Abstract
A subset S of the Boolean hypercube 𝔽₂ⁿ is a sumset if S = {a + b : a, b ∈ A} for some A ⊆ 𝔽₂ⁿ. Sumsets are central objects of study in additive combinatorics, where they play a role in several of the field’s most important results. We prove a lower bound of Ω(2^{n/2}) for the number of queries needed to test whether a Boolean function f:𝔽₂ⁿ → {0,1} is the indicator function of a sumset, ruling out an efficient testing algorithm for sumsets. Our lower bound for testing sumsets follows from sharp bounds on the related problem of shift testing, which may be of independent interest. We also give a near-optimal {2^{n/2} ⋅ poly(n)}-query algorithm for a smoothed analysis formulation of the sumset refutation problem. Finally, we include a simple proof that the number of different sumsets in 𝔽₂ⁿ is 2^{(1±o(1))2^{n-1}}.

On the Satisfiability of Random 3-SAT Formulas with k-Wise Independent Clauses

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 351, 33rd Annual European Symposium on Algorithms (ESA 2025)

Abstract
The problem of identifying the satisfiability threshold of random 3-SAT formulas has received a lot of attention during the last decades and has inspired the study of other threshold phenomena in random combinatorial structures. The classical assumption in this line of research is that, for a given set of n Boolean variables, each clause is drawn uniformly at random among all sets of three literals from these variables, independently from other clauses. Here, we keep the uniform distribution of each clause, but deviate significantly from the independence assumption and consider richer families of probability distributions. For integer parameters n, m, and k, we denote by ℱ_k(n,m) the family of probability distributions that produce formulas with m clauses, each selected uniformly at random from all sets of three literals from the n variables, so that the clauses are k-wise independent. Our aim is to make general statements about the satisfiability or unsatisfiability of formulas produced by distributions in ℱ_k(n,m) for different values of the parameters n, m, and k. Our technical results are as follows: First, all probability distributions in ℱ₂(n,m) with m ∈ Ω(n³) return unsatisfiable formulas with high probability. This result is tight. We show that there exists a probability distribution 𝒟 ∈ ℱ₃(n,m) with m ∈ O(n³) so that a random formula drawn from 𝒟 is almost always satisfiable. In contrast, for m ∈ Ω(n²), any probability distribution 𝒟 ∈ ℱ₄(n,m) returns an unsatisfiable formula with high probability. This is our most surprising and technically involved result. Finally, for any integer k ≥ 2, any probability distribution 𝒟 ∈ ℱ_k(n,m) with m ∈ O(n^{1-1/k}) returns a satisfiable formula with high probability.

Improved Parallel Derandomization via Finite Automata with Applications

Authors: Jeff Giliberti and David G. Harris

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 351, 33rd Annual European Symposium on Algorithms (ESA 2025)

Abstract
A central approach to algorithmic derandomization is the construction of small-support probability distributions that "fool” randomized algorithms, often enabling efficient parallel (NC) implementations. An abstraction of this idea is fooling polynomial-space statistical tests computed via finite automata [Sivakumar STOC'02]; this encompasses a wide range of properties including k-wise independence and sums of random variables. We present new parallel algorithms to fool finite-state automata, with significantly reduced processor complexity. Briefly, our approach is to iteratively sparsify distributions using a work-efficient lattice rounding routine and maintain accuracy by tracking an aggregate weighted error that is determined by the Lipschitz value of the statistical tests being fooled. We illustrate with improved applications to the Gale-Berlekamp Switching Game and to approximate MAX-CUT via SDP rounding. These involve further several optimizations, such as the truncation of the state space of the automata and FFT-based convolutions to compute transition probabilities efficiently.

Color Distance Oracles and Snippets: Separation Between Exact and Approximate Solutions

Authors: Noam Horowicz and Tsvi Kopelowitz

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 351, 33rd Annual European Symposium on Algorithms (ESA 2025)

Abstract
In the snippets problem, the goal is to preprocess a text T so that given two pattern queries, P₁ and P₂, one can quickly locate the occurrences of the two patterns in T that are closest to each other, or report the distance between these occurrences. Kopelowitz and Krauthgamer [CPM2016] showed upper bound tradeoffs and conditional lower bounds tradeoffs for the snippets problem, by utilizing connections between the snippets problem and the problem of constructing a color distance oracle (CDO), which is a data structure that preprocess a set of points with associated colors so that given two colors c and c' one can quickly find the (distance between the) closest pair of points where one has color c and the other has color c'. However, the existing upper bound and lower bound curves are not tight. Inspired by recent advances by Kopelowitz and Vassilevska-Williams [ICALP2020] regarding tradeoff curves for Set-disjointness data structures, in this paper we introduce new conditionally optimal algorithms for a (1+ε) approximation version of the snippets problem and a (1+ε) approximation version of the CDO problem, by applying fast matrix multiplication. For example, for CDO on n points in an array, if the preprocessing time is Õ(n^a) and the query time is Õ(n^b) then, assuming that ω = 2 (where ω is the exponent of n in the runtime of the fastest matrix multiplication algorithm on two squared matrices of size n× n), we show that approximate CDO can be solved with the following tradeoff a + 2b = 2 (if 0 ≤ b ≤ 1/3) 2a + b = 3 (if 1/3 ≤ b ≤ 1). Moreover, we prove that for exact CDO on points in an array, the algorithm of Kopelowitz and Krauthgamer [CPM2016], which obtains a tradeoff of a+b = 2, is essentially optimal assuming that the strong all-pairs shortest paths hypothesis holds for randomized algorithms. Thus, we demonstrate that the exact version of CDO is strictly harder than the approximate version. Moreover, this separation carries over to the snippets problem.

Optimal Antimatroid Sorting

Authors: Benjamin Aram Berendsohn

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 351, 33rd Annual European Symposium on Algorithms (ESA 2025)

Abstract
The classical comparison-based sorting problem asks us to find the underlying total ordering of a given set of elements, where we can only access the elements via comparisons. In this paper, we study a restricted version, where, as a hint, a set T of possible total orderings is given, usually in some compressed form. Recently, an algorithm called topological heapsort with optimal running time was found for case where T is the set of topological orderings of a given directed acyclic graph, or, equivalently, T is the set of linear extensions of a partial ordering [Haeupler et al. 2024]. We show that a simple generalization of topological heapsort is applicable to a much broader class of restricted sorting problems, where T corresponds to a given antimatroid. As a consequence, we obtain optimal algorithms for the following restricted sorting problems, where the allowed total orders are … - … restricted by a given set of monotone precedence formulas; - … the perfect elimination orders of a given chordal graph; or - … the possible vertex search orders of a given connected rooted graph.

Generalised Linial-Nisan Conjecture Is False for DNFs

Abstract
Aaronson (STOC 2010) conjectured that almost k-wise independence fools constant-depth circuits; he called this the generalised Linial-Nisan conjecture. Aaronson himself later found a counterexample for depth-3 circuits. We give here an improved counterexample for depth-2 circuits (DNFs). This shows, for instance, that Bazzi’s celebrated result (k-wise independence fools DNFs) cannot be generalised in a natural way. We also propose a way to circumvent our counterexample: We define a new notion of pseudorandomness called local couplings and show that it fools DNFs and even decision lists.

Bounded Simultaneous Messages

Abstract
We consider the following question of bounded simultaneous messages (BSM) protocols: Can computationally unbounded Alice and Bob evaluate a function f(x,y) of their inputs by sending polynomial-size messages to a computationally bounded Carol? The special case where f is the mod-2 inner-product function and Carol is bounded to AC⁰ has been studied in previous works. The general question can be broadly motivated by applications in which distributed computation is more costly than local computation. In this work, we initiate a more systematic study of the BSM model, with different functions f and computational bounds on Carol. In particular, we give evidence against the existence of BSM protocols with polynomial-size Carol for naturally distributed variants of NP-complete languages.

RANDOM
Sampling and Certifying Symmetric Functions

Abstract
A circuit 𝒞 samples a distribution X with an error ε if the statistical distance between the output of 𝒞 on the uniform input and X is ε. We study the hardness of sampling a uniform distribution over the set of n-bit strings of Hamming weight k denoted by Uⁿ_k for decision forests, i.e. every output bit is computed as a decision tree of the inputs. For every k there is an O(log n)-depth decision forest sampling Uⁿ_k with an inverse-polynomial error [Emanuele Viola, 2012; Czumaj, 2015]. We show that for every ε > 0 there exists τ such that for decision depth τ log (n/k) / log log (n/k), the error for sampling U_kⁿ is at least 1-ε. Our result is based on the recent robust sunflower lemma [Ryan Alweiss et al., 2021; Rao, 2019]. Our second result is about matching a set of n-bit strings with the image of a d-local circuit, i.e. such that each output bit depends on at most d input bits. We study the set of all n-bit strings whose Hamming weight is at least n/2. We improve the previously known locality lower bound from Ω(log^* n) [Beyersdorff et al., 2013] to Ω(√log n), leaving only a quartic gap from the best upper bound of O(log² n).

Bounded Indistinguishability for Simple Sources

Abstract
A pair of sources X, Y over {0,1}ⁿ are k-indistinguishable if their projections to any k coordinates are identically distributed. Can some AC^0 function distinguish between two such sources when k is big, say k = n^{0.1}? Braverman’s theorem (Commun. ACM 2011) implies a negative answer when X is uniform, whereas Bogdanov et al. (Crypto 2016) observe that this is not the case in general. We initiate a systematic study of this question for natural classes of low-complexity sources, including ones that arise in cryptographic applications, obtaining positive results, negative results, and barriers. In particular: - There exist Ω(√n)-indistinguishable X, Y, samplable by degree-O(log n) polynomial maps (over F₂) and by poly(n)-size decision trees, that are Ω(1)-distinguishable by OR. - There exists a function f such that all f(d, ε)-indistinguishable X, Y that are samplable by degree-d polynomial maps are ε-indistinguishable by OR for all sufficiently large n. Moreover, f(1, ε) = ⌈log(1/ε)⌉ + 1 and f(2, ε) = O(log^{10}(1/ε)). - Extending (weaker versions of) the above negative results to AC^0 distinguishers would require settling a conjecture of Servedio and Viola (ECCC 2012). Concretely, if every pair of n^{0.9}-indistinguishable X, Y that are samplable by linear maps is ε-indistinguishable by AC^0 circuits, then the binary inner product function can have at most an ε-correlation with AC^0 ◦ ⊕ circuits. Finally, we motivate the question and our results by presenting applications of positive results to low-complexity secret sharing and applications of negative results to leakage-resilient cryptography.

Limits of Preprocessing

Authors: Yuval Filmus, Yuval Ishai, Avi Kaplan, and Guy Kindler

Abstract
It is a classical result that the inner product function cannot be computed by an AC⁰ circuit [Merrick L. Furst et al., 1981; Miklós Ajtai, 1983; Johan Håstad, 1986]. It is conjectured that this holds even if we allow arbitrary preprocessing of each of the two inputs separately. We prove this conjecture when the preprocessing of one of the inputs is limited to output n + n/(log^{ω(1)} n) bits. Our methods extend to many other functions, including pseudorandom functions, and imply a (weak but nontrivial) limitation on the power of encoding inputs in low-complexity cryptography. Finally, under cryptographic assumptions, we relate the question of proving variants of the main conjecture with the question of learning AC⁰ under simple input distributions.
