Reachability with Restricted Reactions in Inhibitory Chemical Reaction Networks

Abstract
Chemical Reaction Networks (CRNs) are a well-established model of distributed computing characterized by quantities of molecular species that can transform or change through applications of reactions. A fundamental problem in CRNs is the reachability problem, which asks if an initial configuration of species can transition to a target configuration through an applicable sequence of reactions. It is well-known that the reachability problem in general CRNs was recently proven to be Ackermann-complete. However, if the CRN’s reactions are restricted in both power, such as only deleting species (deletion-only rules) or consuming and producing an equal number of species (volume-preserving rules), and size (unimolecular or bimolecular rules), then reachability falls below Ackermann-completeness, and is even solvable in polynomial time for deletion-only systems. In this paper, we investigate reachability under this set of restricted unimolecular and bimolecular reactions, but in the Priority-Inhibitory CRN and Inhibitory CRN models. These models extend a traditional CRN by allowing some reactions to be inhibited from firing in a configuration if certain species are present; the exact inhibition behavior varies between the models. We first show that reachability with Priority iCRNs mostly remains in P for deletion-only systems, but becomes NP-complete for one case. We then show that reachability with deletion-only reactions for iCRNs is mostly NP-complete, and PSPACE-complete even for (1,1)-size (general) reactions. We also provide FPT algorithms for solving most of the reachability problems for the iCRN model. Finally, we show reachability for CRNs with states is already NP-hard for the simplest deletion-only systems, and is PSPACE-complete even for (general) (1,1)-size reactions.

Cutwidth Versus BFS-Width with Applications to Graph Reconstruction from Distance Queries

Abstract
Eppstein, Goodrich, and Liu [ESA 2025] introduced a new graph parameter, called BFS-width, and gave polylogarithmic bounds on it for bounded bandwidth graphs. Their bounds naturally imply several applications, e.g. in graph reconstruction via shortest path distance queries, graph drawing, and matrix reordering. We study this parameter for a broader class of graphs, namely bounded cutwidth graphs. We prove a sublinear upper bound on the BFS-width of bounded cutwidth graphs and show that our bounds are asymptotically tight. Our upper bound implies the first deterministic algorithm for reconstructing a bounded cutwidth graph with a subquadratic number of shortest path distance queries.

Optimal Bounds for Spanners and Tree Covers in Doubling Metrics

Abstract
It is known that any n-point set in the d-dimensional Euclidean space ℝ^d, for d = O(1), admits: 1) A (1+ε)-spanner with maximum degree Õ(ε^{-d+1}) and with lightness Õ(ε^{-d}), for any ε > 0. 2) A (1+ε)-tree cover with Õ(n ⋅ ε^{-d+1}) trees and maximum degree of O(1) in each tree. Moreover, all the parameters in these constructions are optimal: For any 2 ≤ d = O(1), there exists an n-point set in ℝ^d, for which any (1+ε)-spanner has Ω̃(n⋅ε^{-d+1}) edges and lightness Ω̃(ε^{-d}). The upper bounds for Euclidean spanners rely heavily on the spatial property of cone partitioning in ℝ^d, which does not seem to extend to the wider family of doubling metrics, i.e., metric spaces of constant doubling dimension. In doubling metrics, a simple spanner construction from two decades ago, the net-tree spanner, has Õ(n⋅ε^{-d}) edges, and it could be transformed into a spanner of maximum degree Õ(ε^{-d}) and lightness Õ(n⋅ε^{-(d+1)}) by pruning redundant edges. Moreover, a careful refinement of the net-tree spanner yields a (1+ε)-tree cover with Õ(ε^{-d}) trees. Despite a large body of work, the problem of obtaining tight bounds for spanners and tree covers in the wider family of doubling metrics has remained elusive. We resolve this problem by presenting: 1) A surprisingly simple and tight lower bound, which shows that the net-tree spanner and its pruned version are optimal with respect to all the involved parameters. 2) A new construction of (1+ε)-tree covers with Õ(n⋅ε^{-d}) trees, with maximum degree O(1) in each tree. This construction is optimal with respect to the number of trees and maximum degree.

Semantically Reflected Programs

Abstract
This paper addresses the dichotomy between the formalization of structural and the formalization of executable behavioral knowledge by means of semantically lifted programs, which explore an intuitive connection between imperative programs and knowledge graphs. While knowledge graphs and ontologies are eminently useful to represent formal knowledge about a system’s individuals and universals, programming languages are designed to describe the system’s evolution. To address this dichotomy, we introduce a semantic lifting of the program states of an executing progam into a knowledge graph, for an object-oriented programming language. The resulting graph is exposed as a semantic reflection layer within the programming language, allowing programmers to leverage knowledge of the application domain in their programs during execution. In this paper, we formalize semantic lifting and semantic reflection for a small imperative programming language, SMOL, explain the operational aspects of the language, and consider type correctness and virtualization for runtime program queries through the semantic reflection layer. We illustrate semantic lifting and semantic reflection through a case study of geological modeling and discuss different applications of the technique. The language implementation is open source and available online.

Foremost, Fastest, Shortest: Temporal Graph Realization Under Various Path Metrics

Abstract
In this work, we follow the current trend on temporal graph realization, where one is given a property P and the goal is to determine whether there is a temporal graph, that is, a graph where the edge set changes over time, with property P. We consider the problems where the given property P is a prescribed matrix for the duration, length, or earliest arrival time of pairwise temporal paths. This means that we are given a matrix D and ask whether there is a temporal graph such that for any ordered pair of vertices (s,t), D_{s,t} equals the duration (length, or earliest arrival time, respectively) of any temporal path from s to t minimizing that specific temporal path metric. For shortest and earliest arrival temporal paths, we are the first to consider these problems as far as we know. We analyze these problems for many settings such as: strict and non-strict paths, periodic and non-periodic temporal graphs, and limited number of labels per edge (limited number of occurrences per edge over time). In contrast to all other path metrics, we show that for the earliest arrival times, we can achieve polynomial-time algorithms in periodic and non-periodic temporal graphs and for strict and and non-strict paths. However, the problem becomes NP-hard when the matrix does not contain a single integer but a set or range of possible allowed values. As we show, the problem can still be solved efficiently in this scenario, when the number of entries with more than one value is small, that is, we develop an FPT-algorithm for the number of such entries. For the setting of fastest paths, we achieve new hardness results that answers an open question by Klobas, Mertzios, Molter, and Spirakis [Theor. Comput. Sci. '25] about the parameterized complexity of the problem with respect to the vertex cover number and significantly improves over a previous hardness result for the feedback vertex set number. When considering shortest paths, we show that the periodic versions are polynomial-time solvable whereas the non-periodic versions become NP-hard.

ε-Distance via Lévy-Prokhorov Lifting

Abstract
The most studied and accepted pseudometric for probabilistic processes is one based on the Kantorovich distance between distributions. It comes with many theoretical and motivating results, in particular it is the fixpoint of a given functional and defines a functor on (complete) pseudometric spaces. It is also the foundation for a categorical lifting of pseudometrics. Other notions of behavioural pseudometrics have also been proposed, one of them (ε-distance) based on ε-bisimulation. ε-Distance has the advantages that it is intuitively easy to understand, it relates systems that are conceptually close (for example, an imperfect implementation is close to its specification), and it comes equipped with a natural notion of ε-coupling. Finally, this distance is easy to compute. We show that ε-distance is also the greatest fixpoint of a functional and provides a functor. The latter is obtained by replacing the Kantorovich distance in the lifting functor with the Lévy-Prokhorov distance. In addition, we show that ε-couplings and ε-bisimulations have an appealing coalgebraic characterization.

Reward Interfaces with Best-Effort Implementations

Abstract
Interface theories, notably interface automata, serve as expressive frameworks for component-based design, specifying component behavior and interaction in concurrent systems. Traditional interface formalisms specify assumptions that a component’s environment must satisfy and the guarantees that each component provides. This qualitative view of component interaction based on imposing strict assumptions and Boolean guarantees may, however, not be expressive enough to capture the system’s allowed or desired behaviors under different environments. In this paper, we introduce reward interfaces to support component-based design while accommodating multi-valued correctness requirements and adaptive best-effort satisfaction of component’s guarantees. Building upon interface automata, our framework enables modeling a rich class of quantitative component specifications. We propose formal notions of implementation, refinement and compatibility for reward interfaces. We study a class of reward interfaces with automata-based representations, for which we provide algorithms for checking compatibility and refinement, and existence of best-effort implementations. Our framework offers a comprehensive approach to reward interface specification and design.

ε-Stationary Nash Equilibria in Multi-Player Stochastic Graph Games

Abstract
A strategy profile in a multi-player game is a Nash equilibrium if no player can unilaterally deviate to achieve a strictly better payoff. A profile is an ε-Nash equilibrium if no player can gain more than ε by unilaterally deviating from their strategy. In this work, we use ε-Nash equilibria to approximate the computation of Nash equilibria. Specifically, we focus on turn-based, multiplayer stochastic games played on graphs, where players are restricted to stationary strategies - strategies that use randomness but not memory. The problem of deciding the constrained existence of stationary Nash equilibria - where each player’s payoff must lie within a given interval - is known to be ∃ℝ-complete in such a setting (Hansen and Sølvsten, 2020). We extend this line of work to stationary ε-Nash equilibria and present an algorithm that solves the following promise problem: given a game with a Nash equilibrium satisfying the constraints, compute an ε-Nash equilibrium that ε-satisfies those same constraints - satisfies the constraints up to an ε additive error. Our algorithm runs in FNP^NP time. To achieve this, we first show that if a constrained Nash equilibrium exists, then one exists where the non-zero probabilities are at least an inverse of a double-exponential in the input. We further prove that such a strategy can be encoded using floating-point representations, as in the work of Frederiksen and Miltersen (2013), which finally gives us our FNP^NP algorithm. We further show that the decision version of the promise problem is NP-hard. Finally, we show a partial tightness result by proving a lower bound for such techniques: if a constrained Nash equilibrium exists, then there must be one where the probabilities in the strategies are double-exponentially small.

Distributed Games with a Central Decision Maker

Abstract
We study distributed games played on non-deterministic asynchronous automata which feature a central decision maker process that participates in all key decision making tasks. In these partial-information games, processes use their causal past to respond to scheduling choices made by the scheduler and cooperatively strategize as a team to achieve the winning objective. We show that the problem of deciding the existence of a distributed winning strategy is efficiently solvable for global safety and local parity objectives. We provide algorithmic solutions that match their computational hardness. We formulate the notion of a finite-state distributed strategy which allows to quantify its distributed memory requirements. For the aforementioned objectives, we establish that finite-state distributed winning strategies always exist. In fact, we provide novel constructions of such winning strategies which are shown to have almost optimal amount of distributed memory. We also show that a natural extension of the model with two decision making processes is undecidable.

Unreliability in Practical Subclasses of Communicating Systems

Abstract
Systems of communicating automata are prominent models for peer-to-peer message-passing over unbounded channels, but in the general scenario, most verification properties are undecidable. To address this issue, two decidable subclasses, Realisable with Synchronous Communication (RSC) and k-Multiparty Compatibility (k-MC), were proposed in the literature, with corresponding verification tools developed and applied in practice. Unfortunately, both RSC and k-MC are not resilient under failures: (1) their decidability relies on the assumption of perfect channels and (2) most standard protocols do not satisfy RSC or k-MC under failures. To address these limitations, this paper studies the resilience of RSC and k-MC under two distinct failure models: interference and crash-stop failures. For interference, we relax the conditions of RSC and k-MC and prove that the inclusions of these relaxed properties remain decidable under interference, preserving their known complexity bounds. We then propose a novel crash-handling communicating system that captures wider behaviours than existing multiparty session types (MPST) with crash-stop failures. We study a translation of MPST with crash-stop failures into this system integrating RSC and k-MC properties, and establish their decidability results. Finally, by verifying representative protocols from the literature using RSC and k-MC tools extended to interferences, we evaluate the relaxed systems and demonstrate their resilience.

(Multivariate) k-SUM as Barrier to Succinct Computation

Abstract
How does the time complexity of a problem change when the input is given succinctly rather than explicitly? We study this question for several geometric problems defined on a set X of N points in ℤ^d. As succinct representation, we choose a sumset (or Minkowski sum) representation: Instead of receiving X explicitly, we are given sets A,B of n points that define X as A+B = {a+b∣ a ∈ A,b ∈ B}. We investigate the fine-grained complexity of this succinct version for several Õ(N)-time computable geometric primitives. Remarkably, we can tie their complexity tightly to the complexity of corresponding k-SUM problems. Specifically, we introduce as All-ints 3-SUM(n,n,k) the following multivariate, multi-output variant of 3-SUM: given sets A,B of size n and set C of size k, determine for all c ∈ C whether there are a ∈ A and b ∈ B with a+b = c. We obtain the following results: 1) Succinct closest L_∞-pair requires time N^{1-o(1)} under the 3-SUM hypothesis, while succinct furthest L_∞-pair can be solved in time Õ(n). 2) Succinct bichromatic closest L_∞-Pair requires time N^{1-o(1)} iff the 4-SUM hypothesis holds. 3) The following problems are fine-grained equivalent to All-ints 3-SUM(n,n,k): succinct skyline computation in 2D with output size k and succinct batched orthogonal range search with k given ranges. This establishes conditionally tight Õ(min{nk, N})-time algorithms for these problems. We obtain further connections with All-ints 3-SUM(n,n,k) for succinctly computing independent sets in unit interval graphs. Thus, (Multivariate) k-SUM problems precisely capture the barrier for enabling sumset-succinct computation for various geometric primitives.

LeanLTL: A Unifying Framework for Linear Temporal Logics in Lean (Short Paper)

Abstract
We propose LeanLTL, a unifying framework for linear temporal logics in Lean 4. LeanLTL supports reasoning about traces that represent either infinite or finite linear time. The library allows traditional LTL syntax to be combined with arbitrary Lean expressions, making it straightforward to define properties involving numerical or other types. We prove that standard flavors of LTL can be embedded in our framework. The library also provides automation for reasoning about LeanLTL formulas in a way that facilitates using Lean’s existing tactics. Finally, we provide examples illustrating the utility of the library in reasoning about systems that come from applications.

On Piecewise Affine Reachability with Bellman Operators

Abstract
A piecewise affine map is one of the simplest mathematical objects exhibiting complex dynamics. The reachability problem of piecewise affine maps is as follows: Given two vectors s, t ∈ ℚ^d and a piecewise affine map f: ℚ^d → ℚ^d, is there n ∈ ℕ such that fⁿ(s) = t? Koiran, Cosnard, and Garzon show that the reachability problem of piecewise affine maps is undecidable even in dimension 2. Most of the recent progress has been focused on decision procedures for one-dimensional piecewise affine maps, where the reachability problem has been shown to be decidable for some subclasses. However, the general undecidability discouraged research into positive results in arbitrary dimension. In this work, we investigate a rich subclass of piecewise affine maps arising as Bellman operators of Markov decision processes (MDPs). We consider the reachability problem restricted to this subclass and examine its decidability in arbitrary dimensions. We establish that the reachability problem for Bellman operators is decidable in any dimension under either of the following conditions: (i) the target vector t is not the fixed point of the operator f; or (ii) the initial and target vectors s and t are comparable with respect to the componentwise order. Furthermore, we show that the reachability problem for two-dimensional Bellman operators is decidable for arbitrary s, t ∈ ℚ^d, in contrast to the known undecidability of reachability for general piecewise affine maps.

The Complexity of Separability for Semilinear Sets and Parikh Automata

Abstract
In a separability problem, we are given two sets K and L from a class 𝒞, and we want to decide whether there exists a set S from a class 𝒮 such that K ⊆ S and S ∩ L = ∅. In this case, we speak of separability of sets in 𝒞 by sets in 𝒮. We study two types of separability problems. First, we consider separability of semilinear sets (i.e. subsets of ℕ^d for some d) by sets definable by quantifier-free monadic Presburger formulas (or equivalently, the recognizable subsets of ℕ^d). Here, a formula is monadic if each atom uses at most one variable. Second, we consider separability of languages of Parikh automata by regular languages. A Parikh automaton is a machine with access to counters that can only be incremented, and have to meet a semilinear constraint at the end of the run. Both of these separability problems are known to be decidable with elementary complexity. Our main results are that both problems are coNP-complete. In the case of semilinear sets, coNP-completeness holds regardless of whether the input sets are specified by existential Presburger formulas, quantifier-free formulas, or semilinear representations. Our results imply that recognizable separability of rational subsets of Σ* × ℕ^d (shown decidable by Choffrut and Grigorieff) is coNP-complete as well. Another application is that regularity of deterministic Parikh automata (where the target set is specified using a quantifier-free Presburger formula) is coNP-complete as well.
