Submodular Maximization over a Matroid k-Intersection: Multiplicative Improvement over Greedy

Abstract
We study the problem of maximizing a non-negative monotone submodular objective f subject to the intersection of k arbitrary matroid constraints. The natural greedy algorithm guarantees (k+1)-approximation for this problem, and the state-of-the-art algorithm only improves this approximation ratio to k. We give a (2k ln 2)/(1 + ln 2) + O(√k) < 0.819 k + O(√k) approximation algorithm for this problem. Our result is the first multiplicative improvement over the approximation ratio of the greedy algorithm for general k. We further show that our algorithm can be used to obtain roughly the same approximation ratio also for the more general problem in which the objective is not guaranteed to be monotone (the sublinear term in the approximation ratio becomes O(k^{2/3}) rather than O(√k) in this case). All of our results hold also when the k-matroid intersection constraint is replaced with a more general matroid k-parity constraint. Furthermore, unlike the case in many of the previous works, our algorithms run in time that is independent of k and polynomial in the size of the ground set. Our algorithms are based on a hybrid greedy local search approach recently introduced by Singer and Thiery [Neta Singer and Theophile Thiery, 2025] for the weighted matroid k-intersection problem, which is a special case of the problem we consider. Leveraging their approach in the submodular setting requires several non-trivial insights and algorithmic modifications since the marginals of a submodular function f, which correspond to the weights in the weighted case, are not independent of the algorithm’s internal randomness. In the special weighted case studied by [Neta Singer and Theophile Thiery, 2025], our algorithms reduce to a variant of the algorithm of [Neta Singer and Theophile Thiery, 2025] with an improved approximation ratio of (k + 1) ln 2 + O(ε) < 0.694k + 0.694 + O(ε), compared to an approximation ratio of (k+1)/(2ln 2) ≈ 0.722k + 0.722 guaranteed by Singer and Thiery [Neta Singer and Theophile Thiery, 2025].

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 371, 24th International Symposium on Experimental Algorithms (SEA 2026)

Abstract
How to utilize an allocated budget effectively for branding and promotion of a commercial house is an important problem, particularly when multiple advertising media are available. There exist multiple such media, and among them, two popular ones are billboards and social media advertisements. In this context, the question naturally arises: how should a budget be allocated to maximize total influence? Although there is significant literature on the effective use of budgets in individual advertising media, there are hardly any studies examining budget allocation across multiple advertising media. To bridge this gap, this paper introduces the Budget Splitting Problem in Billboard and Social Network Advertisement. We introduce the notion of interaction effect to capture the additional influence due to triggers from multiple media of advertising. Using this notion, we propose a noble influence function Φ(,) that captures the total influence and shows that this function is non-negative, monotone, and non-bisubmodular. We introduce bi-submodularity ratio (γ) and generalized curvature (α) to measure how close a function is to being bi-submodular and how far a function is from being modular, respectively. We propose the Randomized Greedy and Two-Phase Adaptive Greedy approach, where the influence function is non-bisubmodular and achieves an approximation guarantee of (1/α)(1-e^(-γα)). We conducted several experiments using real-world datasets and observed that the proposed solution approach’s budget splitting leads to a greater influence than existing approaches.

Mining Inter-Document Argument Structures in Scientific Papers for an Argument Web

Authors: Florian Ruosch, Cristina Sarasua, and Abraham Bernstein

Published in: TGDK, Volume 3, Issue 3 (2025). Transactions on Graph Data and Knowledge, Volume 3, Issue 3

Abstract
In Argument Mining, predicting argumentative relations between texts (or spans) remains one of the most challenging aspects, even more so in the cross-document setting. This paper makes three key contributions to advance research in this domain. We first extend an existing dataset, the Sci-Arg corpus, by annotating it with explicit inter-document argumentative relations, thereby allowing arguments to be distributed over several documents forming an Argument Web; these new annotations are published using Semantic Web technologies (RDF, OWL). Second, we explore and evaluate three automated approaches for predicting these inter-document argumentative relations, establishing critical baselines on the new dataset. We find that a simple classifier based on discourse indicators with access to context outperforms neural methods. Third, we conduct a comparative analysis of these approaches for both intra- and inter-document settings, identifying statistically significant differences in results that indicate the necessity of distinguishing between these two scenarios. Our findings highlight significant challenges in this complex domain and open crucial avenues for future research on the Argument Web of Science, particularly for those interested in leveraging Semantic Web technologies and knowledge graphs to understand scholarly discourse. With this, we provide the first stepping stones in the form of a benchmark dataset, three baseline methods, and an initial analysis for a systematic exploration of this field relevant to the Web of Data and Science.

Cache Timing Leakages in Zero-Knowledge Protocols

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 354, 7th Conference on Advances in Financial Technologies (AFT 2025)

Abstract
The area of modern zero-knowledge proof systems has seen a significant rise in popularity over the last couple of years, with new techniques and optimized constructions emerging on a regular basis. As the field matures, the aspect of implementation attacks becomes more relevant, however side-channel attacks on zero-knowledge proof systems have seen surprisingly little treatment so far. In this paper, we give an overview of potential attack vectors and show that some of the underlying finite field libraries, and implementations of heavily used components like hash functions using them, are vulnerable w.r.t. cache attacks on CPUs. On the positive side, we demonstrate that the computational overhead to protect against these attacks is relatively small.

Deterministic (2/3 - ε)-Approximation of Matroid Intersection Using Nearly-Linear Independence-Oracle Queries

Authors: Tatsuya Terao

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 349, 19th International Symposium on Algorithms and Data Structures (WADS 2025)

Abstract
In the matroid intersection problem, we are given two matroids ℳ₁ = (V, ℐ₁) and ℳ₂ = (V, ℐ₂) defined on the same ground set V of n elements, and the objective is to find a common independent set S ∈ ℐ₁ ∩ ℐ₂ of largest possible cardinality, denoted by r. In this paper, we consider a deterministic matroid intersection algorithm with only a nearly linear number of independence oracle queries. Our contribution is to present a deterministic O(n/(ε) + r log r)-independence-query (2/3-ε)-approximation algorithm for any ε > 0. Our idea is very simple: we apply a recent Õ(n √r/ε)-independence-query (1 - ε)-approximation algorithm of Blikstad [ICALP 2021], but terminate it before completion. Moreover, we also present a semi-streaming algorithm for (2/3 -ε)-approximation of matroid intersection in O(1/ε) passes.

DiVerG: Scalable Distance Index for Validation of Paired-End Alignments in Sequence Graphs

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 344, 25th International Conference on Algorithms for Bioinformatics (WABI 2025)

Abstract
Determining the distance between two loci within a genomic region is a recurrent operation in various tasks in computational genomics. A notable example of this task arises in paired-end read mapping as a form of validation of distances between multiple alignments. While straightforward for a single genome, graph-based reference structures render the operation considerably more involved. Given the sheer number of such queries in a typical read mapping experiment, an efficient algorithm for answering distance queries is crucial. In this paper, we introduce DiVerG, a compact data structure as well as a fast and scalable algorithm, for constructing distance indexes for general sequence graphs on multi-core CPU and many-core GPU architectures. DiVerG is based on PairG [Jain et al., 2019], but overcomes the limitations of PairG by exploiting the extensive potential for improvements in terms of scalability and space efficiency. As a consequence, DiVerG can process substantially larger datasets, such as whole human genomes, which are unmanageable by PairG. DiVerG offers faster index construction time and consistently faster query time with gains proportional to the size of the underlying compact data structure. We demonstrate that our method performs favorably on multiple real datasets at various scales. DiVerG achieves superior performance over PairG; e.g. resulting to 2.5-4x speed-up in query time, 44-340x smaller index size, and 3-50x faster construction time for the genome graph of the MHC region, as a particularly variable region of the human genome. The implementation is available at: https://github.com/cartoonist/diverg

A k-mer-Based Estimator of the Substitution Rate Between Repetitive Sequences

Authors: Haonan Wu, Antonio Blanca, and Paul Medvedev

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 344, 25th International Conference on Algorithms for Bioinformatics (WABI 2025)

Abstract
K-mer-based analysis of genomic data is ubiquitous, but the presence of repetitive k-mers continues to pose problems for the accuracy of many methods. For example, the Mash tool (Ondov et al. 2016) can accurately estimate the substitution rate between two low-repetitive sequences from their k-mer sketches; however, it is inaccurate on repetitive sequences such as the centromere of a human chromosome. Follow-up work by Blanca et al. (2021) has attempted to model how mutations affect k-mer sets based on strong assumptions that the sequence is non-repetitive and that mutations do not create spurious k-mer matches. However, the theoretical foundations for extending an estimator like Mash to work in the presence of repeat sequences have been lacking. In this work, we relax the non-repetitive assumption and propose a novel estimator for the mutation rate. We derive theoretical bounds on our estimator’s bias. Our experiments show that it remains accurate for repetitive genomic sequences, such as the alpha satellite higher order repeats in centromeres. We demonstrate our estimator’s robustness across diverse datasets and various ranges of the substitution rate and k-mer size. Finally, we show how sketching can be used to avoid dealing with large k-mer sets while retaining accuracy. Our software is available at https://github.com/medvedevgroup/Repeat-Aware_Substitution_Rate_Estimator.

GreedyML: A Parallel Algorithm for Maximizing Constrained Submodular Functions

Authors: Shivaram Gopal, S M Ferdous, Alex Pothen, and Hemanta Maji

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 338, 23rd International Symposium on Experimental Algorithms (SEA 2025)

Abstract
We describe a parallel approximation algorithm for maximizing monotone submodular functions subject to hereditary constraints on distributed memory multiprocessors. Our work is motivated by the need to solve submodular optimization problems on massive data sets, for practical contexts such as data summarization, machine learning, and graph sparsification. Our work builds on the randomized distributed RandGreeDI algorithm, proposed by Barbosa, Ene, Nguyen, and Ward (2015). This algorithm computes a distributed solution by randomly partitioning the data among all the processors and then employing a single accumulation step in which all processors send their partial solutions to one processor. However, for large problems, the accumulation step exceeds the memory available on a processor, and the processor which performs the accumulation becomes a computational bottleneck. Hence we propose a generalization of the RandGreeDI algorithm that employs multiple accumulation steps to reduce the memory required. We analyze the approximation ratio and the time complexity of the algorithm (in the BSP model). We evaluate the new GreedyML algorithm on three classes of problems, and report results from large-scale data sets with millions of elements. The results show that the GreedyML algorithm can solve problems where the sequential Greedy and distributed RandGreeDI algorithms fail due to memory constraints. For certain computationally intensive problems, the GreedyML algorithm is faster than the RandGreeDI algorithm. The observed approximation quality of the solutions computed by the GreedyML algorithm closely matches those obtained by the RandGreeDI algorithm on these problems.

Dynamic Algorithms for Submodular Matching

Abstract
The Maximum Submodular Matching (MSM) problem is a generalization of the classical Maximum Weight Matching (MWM) problem. In this problem, given a monotone submodular function f: 2^E → ℝ^{≥ 0} defined over subsets of edges of a graph G(V, E), we are asked to return a matching whose submodular value is maximum among all matchings in graph G(V, E). In this paper, we consider this problem in a fully dynamic setting against an oblivious adversary. In this setting, we are given a sequence 𝒮 of insertions and deletions of edges of the underlying graph G(V, E), along with an oracle access to the monotone submodular function f. The goal is to maintain a matching M such that, at any time t of sequence 𝒮, its submodular value is a good approximation of the value of the optimal submodular matching while keeping the number of operations minimal. We develop the first dynamic algorithm for the submodular matching problem, in which we maintain a matching whose submodular value is within expected (8 + ε)-approximation of the optimal submodular matching at any time t of sequence 𝒮 using expected amortized poly(log n, 1/(ε)) update time. Our approach incorporates a range of novel techniques, notably the concept of Uniform Hierarchical Caches (UHC) data structure along with its invariants, which lead to the first algorithm for fully dynamic submodular matching and may be of independent interest for designing dynamic algorithms for other problems.

Deterministic k-Median Clustering in Near-Optimal Time

Authors: Martín Costa and Ermiya Farokhnejad

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 334, 52nd International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2025)

Abstract
The metric k-median problem is a textbook clustering problem. As input, we are given a metric space V of size n and an integer k, and our task is to find a subset S ⊆ V of at most k "centers" that minimizes the total distance from each point in V to its nearest center in S. Mettu and Plaxton [UAI'02] gave a randomized algorithm for k-median that computes a O(1)-approximation in Õ(nk) time. They also showed that any algorithm for this problem with a bounded approximation ratio must have a running time of Ω(nk). Thus, the running time of their algorithm is optimal up to polylogarithmic factors. For deterministic k-median, Guha et al. [FOCS'00] gave an algorithm that computes a poly(log (n/k))-approximation in Õ(nk) time, where the degree of the polynomial in the approximation is unspecified. To the best of our knowledge, this remains the state-of-the-art approximation of any deterministic k-median algorithm with this running time. This leads us to the following natural question: What is the best approximation of a deterministic k-median algorithm with near-optimal running time? We make progress in answering this question by giving a deterministic algorithm that computes a O(log(n/k))-approximation in Õ(nk) time. We also provide a lower bound showing that any deterministic algorithm with this running time must have an approximation ratio of Ω(log n/(log k + log log n)), establishing a gap between the randomized and deterministic settings for k-median.

Identifying Approximate Minimizers Under Stochastic Uncertainity

Authors: Hessa Al-Thani and Viswanath Nagarajan

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 334, 52nd International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2025)

Abstract
We study a fundamental stochastic selection problem involving n independent random variables, each of which can be queried at some cost. Given a tolerance level δ, the goal is to find a δ-approximately minimum (or maximum) value over all the random variables, at minimum expected cost. A solution to this problem is an adaptive sequence of queries, where the choice of the next query may depend on previously-observed values. Two variants arise, depending on whether the goal is to find a δ-minimum value or a δ-minimizer. When all query costs are uniform, we provide a 4-approximation algorithm for both variants. When query costs are non-uniform, we provide a 5.83-approximation algorithm for the δ-minimum value and a 7.47-approximation for the δ-minimizer. All our algorithms rely on non-adaptive policies (that perform a fixed sequence of queries), so we also upper bound the corresponding "adaptivity" gaps. Our analysis relates the stopping probabilities in the algorithm and optimal policies, where a key step is in proving and using certain stochastic dominance properties.

Approximate Minimum Tree Cover in All Symmetric Monotone Norms Simultaneously

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 327, 42nd International Symposium on Theoretical Aspects of Computer Science (STACS 2025)

Abstract
We study the problem of partitioning a set of n objects in a metric space into k clusters V₁,...,V_k. The quality of the clustering is measured by considering the vector of cluster costs and then minimizing some monotone symmetric norm of that vector (in particular, this includes the 𝓁_p-norms). For the costs of the clusters we take the weight of a minimum-weight spanning tree on the objects in V_i, which may serve as a proxy for the cost of traversing all objects in the cluster, for example in the context of Multirobot Coverage as studied by Zheng, Koenig, Kempe, Jain (IROS 2005), but also as a shape-invariant measure of cluster density similar to Single-Linkage Clustering. This problem has been studied by Even, Garg, Könemann, Ravi, Sinha (Oper. Res. Lett., 2004) for the setting of minimizing the weight of the largest cluster (i.e., using 𝓁_∞) as Min-Max Tree Cover, for which they gave a constant-factor approximation algorithm. We provide a careful adaptation of their algorithm to compute solutions which are approximately optimal with respect to all monotone symmetric norms simultaneously, and show how to find them in polynomial time. In fact, our algorithm is purely combinatorial and can process metric spaces with 10,000 points in less than a second. As an extension, we also consider the case where instead of a target number of clusters we are provided with a set of depots in the space such that every cluster should contain at least one such depot. One can consider these as the fixed starting points of some agents that will traverse all points of a cluster. For this setting also we are able to give a polynomial-time algorithm computing a constant-factor approximation with respect to all monotone symmetric norms simultaneously. To show that the algorithmic results are tight up to the precise constant of approximation attainable, we also prove that such clustering problems are already APX-hard when considering only one single 𝓁_p norm for the objective.

Accumulation Without Homomorphism

Authors: Benedikt Bünz, Pratyush Mishra, Wilson Nguyen, and William Wang

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 325, 16th Innovations in Theoretical Computer Science Conference (ITCS 2025)

Abstract
Accumulation schemes are a simple yet powerful primitive that enable highly efficient constructions of incrementally verifiable computation (IVC). Unfortunately, all prior accumulation schemes rely on homomorphic vector commitments whose security is based on public-key assumptions. It is an interesting open question to construct efficient accumulation schemes that avoid the need for such assumptions. In this paper, we answer this question affirmatively by constructing an accumulation scheme from non-homomorphic vector commitments which can be realized from solely symmetric-key assumptions (e.g., Merkle trees). We overcome the need for homomorphisms by instead performing spot-checks over error-correcting encodings of the committed vectors. Unlike prior accumulation schemes, our scheme only supports a bounded number of accumulation steps. We show that such bounded-depth accumulation still suffices to construct proof-carrying data (a generalization of IVC). We also demonstrate several optimizations to our PCD construction which greatly improve concrete efficiency.

Facility Location on High-Dimensional Euclidean Spaces

Authors: Euiwoong Lee and Kijun Shin

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 325, 16th Innovations in Theoretical Computer Science Conference (ITCS 2025)

Abstract
Recent years have seen great progress in the approximability of fundamental clustering and facility location problems on high-dimensional Euclidean spaces, including k-Means and k-Median. While they admit strictly better approximation ratios than their general metric versions, their approximation ratios are still higher than the hardness ratios for general metrics, leaving the possibility that the ultimate optimal approximation ratios will be the same between Euclidean and general metrics. Moreover, such an improved algorithm for Euclidean spaces is not known for Uncapaciated Facility Location (UFL), another fundamental problem in the area. In this paper, we prove that for any γ ≥ 1.6774 there exists ε > 0 such that Euclidean UFL admits a (γ, 1 + 2e^{-γ} - ε)-bifactor approximation algorithm, improving the result of Byrka and Aardal [Byrka and Aardal, 2010]. Together with the (γ, 1 + 2e^{-γ}) NP-hardness in general metrics, it shows the first separation between general and Euclidean metrics for the aforementioned basic problems. We also present an (α_Li - ε)-(unifactor) approximation algorithm for UFL for some ε > 0 in Euclidean spaces, where α_Li ≈ 1.488 is the best-known approximation ratio for UFL by Li [Li, 2013].

Hardness of Approximating Bounded-Degree Max 2-CSP and Independent Set on k-Claw-Free Graphs

Authors: Euiwoong Lee and Pasin Manurangsi

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 287, 15th Innovations in Theoretical Computer Science Conference (ITCS 2024)

Abstract
We consider the question of approximating Max 2-CSP where each variable appears in at most d constraints (but with possibly arbitrarily large alphabet). There is a simple ((d+1)/2)-approximation algorithm for the problem. We prove the following results for any sufficiently large d: - Assuming the Unique Games Conjecture (UGC), it is NP-hard (under randomized reduction) to approximate this problem to within a factor of (d/2 - o(d)). - It is NP-hard (under randomized reduction) to approximate the problem to within a factor of (d/3 - o(d)). Thanks to a known connection [Pavel Dvorák et al., 2023], we establish the following hardness results for approximating Maximum Independent Set on k-claw-free graphs: - Assuming the Unique Games Conjecture (UGC), it is NP-hard (under randomized reduction) to approximate this problem to within a factor of (k/4 - o(k)). - It is NP-hard (under randomized reduction) to approximate the problem to within a factor of (k/(3 + 2√2) - o(k)) ≥ (k/(5.829) - o(k)). In comparison, known approximation algorithms achieve (k/2 - o(k))-approximation in polynomial time [Meike Neuwohner, 2021; Theophile Thiery and Justin Ward, 2023] and (k/3 + o(k))-approximation in quasi-polynomial time [Marek Cygan et al., 2013].
