Locality Sensitive Hashing in Hyperbolic Space

Abstract
For a metric space (X, d), a family ℋ of locality sensitive hash functions is called (r, cr, p₁, p₂) sensitive if a randomly chosen function h ∈ ℋ has probability at least p₁ (at most p₂) to map any a, b ∈ X in the same hash bucket if d(a, b) ≤ r (or d(a, b) ≥ cr). Locality Sensitive Hashing (LSH) is one of the most popular techniques for approximate nearest-neighbor search in high-dimensional spaces, and has been studied extensively for Hamming, Euclidean, and spherical geometries. An (r, cr, p₁, p₂)-sensitive hash function enables approximate nearest neighbor search (i.e., returning a point within distance cr from a query q if there exists a point within distance r from q) with space O(n^{1+ρ}) and query time O(n^ρ) where ρ = (log 1/p₁)/(log 1/p₂). But LSH for hyperbolic spaces ℍ^d remains largely unexplored. In this work, we present the first LSH construction native to hyperbolic space. For the hyperbolic plane (d = 2), we show a construction achieving ρ ≤ 1/c, based on the hyperplane rounding scheme. For general hyperbolic spaces (d ≥ 3), we use dimension reduction from ℍ^d to ℍ² and the 2D hyperbolic LSH to get ρ ≤ 1.59/c. On the lower bound side, we show that the lower bound on ρ of Euclidean LSH extends to the hyperbolic setting via local isometry, therefore giving ρ ≥ 1/c².

Improved Rate for Non-Malleable Codes and Time-Lock Puzzles

Abstract
Non-malleable codes allow a sender to transmit a message to a receiver, while providing a "best-possible" integrity guarantee to ensure that no attacker - who cannot already decode the message - can meaningfully tamper the message in transit. If tampered, the received message should either be invalid or unrelated to the original message. Non-malleable time-lock puzzles (TLPs) are a special case of non-malleable codes for bounded polynomial-depth tampering with very efficient encoding. In this work, we give generic techniques for constructing non-malleable codes and non-malleable TLPs with improved rate, which captures the ratio of a message’s length to its encoding length. A key contribution of our work is identifying a security notion for non-malleability, which we term "CCA-hiding", sufficient for our compilers. CCA-hiding is a relaxation of CCA-security for encryption or commitments to the fine-grained setting of codes, and requires that the encoded message remains hidden, even given a decoding oracle for any other codeword. Intriguingly, CCA-hiding does not imply non-malleability in the fine-grained setting, as is the case for encryption and commitments. Using our new techniques, we give the following constructions: - Rate-1 CCA-hiding TLPs in the plain model. - Rate-1 non-malleable codes for bounded polynomial-depth tampering in the auxiliary-input random oracle model (AI-ROM). - Rate-(1/2) non-malleable TLPs in the AI-ROM.

Optimal White-Box Adversarial Streaming Lower Bounds for Approximating LIS Length

Abstract
The space complexity of deterministic streaming algorithms for approximating the length of the longest increasing subsequence (LIS) in a string of length n has been known to be Θ̃(√n) for almost two decades. In contrast, the space complexity of this problem for randomized streaming algorithms remains one of the few longstanding open problems in one-pass streaming. In fact, no better than Ω(log n) lower bounds are known, and the best upper bounds are no better than their deterministic counterparts. In this paper, we push the limits of our understanding of the streaming space complexity of the approximate LIS length problem by studying it in the white-box adversarial streaming model. This model is an intermediate model between deterministic and randomized streaming algorithms that has recently attracted attention. In the white-box model, the streaming algorithm can draw fresh randomness when processing each incoming element, but an adversary generating the stream observes all previously used randomness and adaptively chooses the subsequent elements of the stream. We prove a tight (up to logarithmic factors) Ω(√n) space lower bound for any white-box streaming algorithm that approximates the length of the LIS of a stream of length n to within a factor better than 1.1. Thus, for this problem, white-box algorithms offer no improvement over deterministic ones.

Where to Place Your TEE? In Search of a Censorship-Resilient Design for Rollup Sequencers

Abstract
Ethereum is the dominant blockchain ecosystem capable of executing Turing-complete smart contracts. Rollups gained significant traction as the primary layer 2 (L2) solution meant to bring horizontal scalability to the main Ethereum network (L1). A core component of any rollup is the sequencer, which creates new L2 blocks to be submitted in rollup batches to L1. In most of the current rollup architectures, this component is centralised. As a result, these designs are prone to inconspicuous censorship practices by the sequencer. Trusted execution environments (TEEs) can guarantee the integrity of various sequencer components, which is instrumental in addressing censorship. However, the reaction of the system design to censorship attempts depends on where a TEE is integrated and which components it protects. In particular, this reaction is limited in the case of a monolithic TEE-protected sequencer design. Proposer-Builder Separation (PBS) is a non-monolithic paradigm adopted on L1, which separates the production of blocks from proposing them for inclusion in the blockchain. Recently, PBS has been considered for integration with L2 sequencers, with an impact on alleviating censorship. In this paper, we explore the design space of TEE-integrating PBS and non-PBS sequencer variants. First, we introduce a formal framework for the censorship actions that captures the specificity of the L2 sequencer. Then, we analyse to what extent the different designs address these censorship actions. Our main contribution is a novel design variation that allows for a precise observation of censored transactions. In the presence of TEEs, in a PBS setting, we demonstrate this precise observability, which is necessary to enable resilience to censorship.

Mining Inter-Document Argument Structures in Scientific Papers for an Argument Web

Abstract
In Argument Mining, predicting argumentative relations between texts (or spans) remains one of the most challenging aspects, even more so in the cross-document setting. This paper makes three key contributions to advance research in this domain. We first extend an existing dataset, the Sci-Arg corpus, by annotating it with explicit inter-document argumentative relations, thereby allowing arguments to be distributed over several documents forming an Argument Web; these new annotations are published using Semantic Web technologies (RDF, OWL). Second, we explore and evaluate three automated approaches for predicting these inter-document argumentative relations, establishing critical baselines on the new dataset. We find that a simple classifier based on discourse indicators with access to context outperforms neural methods. Third, we conduct a comparative analysis of these approaches for both intra- and inter-document settings, identifying statistically significant differences in results that indicate the necessity of distinguishing between these two scenarios. Our findings highlight significant challenges in this complex domain and open crucial avenues for future research on the Argument Web of Science, particularly for those interested in leveraging Semantic Web technologies and knowledge graphs to understand scholarly discourse. With this, we provide the first stepping stones in the form of a benchmark dataset, three baseline methods, and an initial analysis for a systematic exploration of this field relevant to the Web of Data and Science.

ASP Essentials: Modelling and Efficient Solving (Invited Paper)

Abstract
Answer Set Programming (ASP) is a logic-based Knowledge Representation and Reasoning (KRR) paradigm that facilitates rapid prototyping of solutions for complex problems. It is particularly effective for tackling Deep Reasoning tasks involving exponentially large search spaces, such as combinatorial search and optimization. While getting started with ASP is relatively easy, mastering its advanced constructs and scaling solutions to real-world problem sizes can be challenging. This paper provides an introduction to ASP, guiding the reader from the fundamentals of the language to the application of programming methodologies and the computation of answer sets. Beyond the core framework, the paper also examines selected extensions of ASP that enable the modeling of complex problems, as well as compilation techniques designed to enhance solving efficiency. Furthermore, it mentions some recent tools that combine ASP with LLMs.

Unsupervised Multimodal Learning for Fault Diagnosis and Prognosis - Application to Radiotherapy Systems (PhD Panel)

Abstract
Modern complex systems, such as radiotherapy machines, require robust strategies for fault detection, diagnosis, and prognosis to ensure operational continuity and patient safety. While data-driven methods have gained traction, few studies address diagnostic and prognostic tasks using multimodal operational data under unsupervised or semi-supervised learning settings. This gap is particularly critical given the scarcity of labeled failure data in real-world environments. This work aims to design a unified approach for fault detection, diagnosis, and prognosis using multimodal data in the absence of complete labeling. To this end, autoencoders (AEs) are employed due to their suitability for unsupervised and self-supervised learning, flexibility in handling heterogeneous data, and ability to construct latent representations optimized for various downstream tasks. A specific implementation based on a Long Short-Term Memory β-Variational Autoencoder (LSTM-β-VAE) was developed to detect anomalies in machine logs. This framework is applied to TomoTherapy® systems - a highly complex and under-explored use case within the radiotherapy domain. Initial results demonstrate strong anomaly detection performance on both a public benchmark dataset (HDFS) and a proprietary dataset derived from real-world TomoTherapy® machine faults. Beyond methodology, the paper includes a concise literature review of multimodal learning and data-driven diagnosis and prognosis with a focus on AEs. Based on this review, key research directions are identified for the continuation of the thesis, especially the integration of explainable AI as a means to enhance diagnosis capabilities in the absence of labeled faults.

Resilience in Knowledge Graph Embeddings

Abstract
In recent years, knowledge graphs have gained interest and witnessed widespread applications in various domains, such as information retrieval, question-answering, recommendation systems, amongst others. Large-scale knowledge graphs to this end have demonstrated their utility in effectively representing structured knowledge. To further facilitate the application of machine learning techniques, knowledge graph embedding models have been developed. Such models can transform entities and relationships within knowledge graphs into vectors. However, these embedding models often face challenges related to noise, missing information, distribution shift, adversarial attacks, etc. This can lead to sub-optimal embeddings and incorrect inferences, thereby negatively impacting downstream applications. While the existing literature has focused so far on adversarial attacks on KGE models, the challenges related to the other critical aspects remain unexplored. In this paper, we, first of all, give a unified definition of resilience, encompassing several factors such as generalisation, in-distribution generalization, distribution adaption, and robustness. After formalizing these concepts for machine learning in general, we define them in the context of knowledge graphs. To find the gap in the existing works on resilience in the context of knowledge graphs, we perform a systematic survey, taking into account all these aspects mentioned previously. Our survey results show that most of the existing works focus on a specific aspect of resilience, namely robustness. After categorizing such works based on their respective aspects of resilience, we discuss the challenges and future research directions.

GraphRAG on Technical Documents - Impact of Knowledge Graph Schema

Abstract
Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) is seeing rapid adoption in industry to enable employees to query information captured in proprietary data for their organisation. In this work, we test the impact of domain-relevant knowledge graph schemas on the results of Microsoft’s GraphRAG pipeline. Our approach aims to address the poor quality of GraphRAG responses on technical reports rich in domain-specific terms. The use case involves technical reports about geology, chemistry and mineral processing published by the Minerals Research Institute of Western Australia (MRIWA). Four schemas are considered: a simple five-class minerals domain expert-developed schema, an expanded minerals domain schema, the Microsoft GraphRAG auto-generated schema, and a schema-less GraphRAG. These are compared to a conventional baseline RAG. Performance is evaluated using a scoring approach that accounts for the mix of correct, incorrect, additional, and missing content in RAG responses. The results show that the simple five-class minerals domain schema extracts approximately 10% more entities from the MRIWA reports than the other schema options. Additionally, both the five-class and the expanded eight-class minerals domain schemas produce the most factually correct answers and the fewest hallucinations. We attribute this to the minerals-specific schemas extracting more relevant, domain-specific information during the Indexing stage. As a result, the Query stage’s context window includes more high-value content. This contributes to the observed improvement in answer quality compared to the other pipelines. In contrast, pipelines with fewer domain-related entities in the KG retrieve less valuable information, leaving more room for irrelevant content in the context window. Baseline RAG responses were typically shorter, less complete, and contained more hallucinations compared to our GraphRAG pipelines. These resources include links to the MRIWA reports, a set of questions (from simple to challenging) along with domain-expert curated answers, schemas, and evaluations of the pipelines.

Toward an Earth-Independent System for EVA Mission Planning: Integrating Physical Models, Domain Knowledge, and Agentic RAG to Provide Explainable LLM-Based Decision Support

Abstract
We propose a unified framework for an Earth‑independent AI system that provides explainable, context‑aware decision support for EVA mission planning by integrating six core components: a fine‑tuned EVA domain LLM, a retrieval‑augmented knowledge base, a short-term memory store, physical simulation models, an agentic orchestration layer, and a multimodal user interface. To ground our design, we analyze the current roles and substitution potential of the Mission Control Center - identifying which procedural and analytical functions can be automated onboard while preserving human oversight for experiential and strategic tasks. Building on this framework, we introduce RASAGE (Retrieval & Simulation Augmented Guidance Agent for Exploration), a proof‑of‑concept toolset that combines Microsoft Phi‑4‑mini‑instruct with a FAISS (Facebook AI Similarity Search)‑powered EVA knowledge base and custom A* path planning and hypogravity metabolic models to generate grounded, traceable EVA plans. We outline a staged validation strategy to evaluate improvements in route efficiency, metabolic prediction accuracy, anomaly response effectiveness, and crew trust under realistic communication delays. Our findings demonstrate the feasibility of replicating key Mission Control functions onboard, enhancing crew autonomy, reducing cognitive load, and improving safety for deep‑space exploration missions.

Gaze Beyond Limits: Integrating Eye-Tracking and Augmented Reality for Next-Generation Spacesuit Interaction

Abstract
Extravehicular activities (EVAs) are increasingly frequent in human spaceflight, particularly in spacecraft maintenance, scientific research, and planetary exploration. Spacesuits are essential for sustaining astronauts in the harsh environment of space, making their design a key factor in the success of EVA missions. The development of spacesuit technology has traditionally been driven by highly engineered solutions focused on life support, mission adaptability and operational efficiency. Modern spacesuits prioritize maintaining optimal internal temperature, humidity and pressure, as well as withstanding extreme temperature fluctuations and providing robust protection against micrometeoroid impacts and space debris. However, their bulkiness and rigidity impose significant physical strain on astronauts, reducing mobility and dexterity, particularly in tasks requiring fine motor control. The restricted field of view further complicates situational awareness, increasing the cognitive load during high-precision operations. While traditional spacesuits support basic EVA tasks, future space exploration shifting toward long-duration lunar and Martian surface missions demand more adaptive, intelligent, and astronaut-centric designs to overcome current constraints. To explore a next-generation spacesuit, this paper proposed an in-process eye-tracking embedded Augmented Reality (AR) Spacesuit System to enhance astronaut-environment interactions. By leveraging Segment-Anything Models (SAM) and Vision-Language Models (VLMs), we demonstrate a four-step approach to enable top-down gaze detection to minimize erroneous fixation data, gaze-based segmentation of objects of interest, real-time contextual assistance via AR overlays and hands-free operation within the spacesuit. This approach enhances real-time situational awareness and improves EVA task efficiency. We conclude with an exploration of the AR Helmet System’s potential in revolutionizing human-space interaction paradigms for future long-duration deep-space missions and discuss the further optimization of eye-tracking interactions using VLMs to predict astronaut intent and highlight relevant objects preemptively.

Cutoff Theorems for the Equivalence of Parameterized Quantum Circuits

Abstract
Many promising quantum algorithms in economics, medical science, and material science rely on circuits that are parameterized by a large number of angles. To ensure that these algorithms are efficient, these parameterized circuits must be heavily optimized. However, most quantum circuit optimizers are not verified, so this procedure is known to be error-prone. For this reason, there is growing interest in the design of equivalence checking algorithms for parameterized quantum circuits. In this paper, we define a generalized class of parameterized circuits with arbitrary rotations and show that this problem is decidable for cyclotomic gate sets. We propose a cutoff-based procedure which reduces the problem of verifying the equivalence of parameterized quantum circuits to the problem of verifying the equivalence of finitely many parameter-free quantum circuits. Because the number of parameter-free circuits grows exponentially with the number of parameters, we also propose a probabilistic variant of the algorithm for cases when the number of parameters is intractably large. We show that our techniques extend to equivalence modulo global phase, and describe an efficient angle sampling procedure for cyclotomic gate sets.

Leakless Polymerase-Dependent Strand Displacement Systems

Abstract
A grand challenge facing molecular programmers is the rational development of fast, robust, and isothermal architectures akin to "chemical central processing units" that can sense (bio-)chemical signals from their environment, perform complex computation, and orchestrate a physical response in situ. DNA strand displacement systems (DSDs) remain a compelling candidate, but are hampered by spurious reaction pathways that lead to incorrect output. DSDs that utilize the systematic leakless motif can be made arbitrarily robust at the cost of increasing redundancy and network size (scaling), and thus a degradation of kinetic performance. Another class of architectures utilize DNA hybridization, extension, and signal production of entirely sequestered outputs via strand-displacing polymerases (SDPs) that have resulted in impressive demonstrations; however, they face similar challenges of aberrant behavior such as mis-priming by incorrect signals. Our work introduces a unified polymerase-dependent toehold-mediated strand displacement (PD-TMSD) architecture that integrates the programmed specificity of DSDs with the unique advantages of SDPs. This unification enables systems that can be made arbitrarily robust, at any concentration range, without increasing network size. We propose a number of gate designs and composition rules to compute arbitrary Boolean functions, emulate arbitrary chemical reaction networks, and explore time-bounded probabilistic computation made possible by certain classes of SDPs. Our theoretical exploration is backed by preliminary experimental demonstrations. This contribution was inspired by the belief that molecular programming can meet or exceed the complexity exhibited in biology if we embrace its best understood molecular machinery and couple it with systematic design principles built upon a strong theoretical foundation.

Assessing Map Reproducibility with Visual Question-Answering: An Empirical Evaluation

Abstract
Reproducibility is a key principle of the modern scientific method. Maps, as an important means of communicating scientific results in GIScience and across disciplines, should be reproducible. Currently, map reproducibility assessment is done manually, which makes the assessment process tedious and time-consuming, ultimately limiting its efficiency. Hence, this work explores the extent to which Visual Question-Answering (VQA) can be used to automate some tasks relevant to map reproducibility assessment. We selected five state-of-the-art vision language models (VLMs) and followed a three-step approach to evaluate their ability to discriminate between maps and other images, interpret map content, and compare two map images using VQA. Our results show that current VLMs already possess map-reading capabilities and demonstrate understanding of spatial concepts, such as cardinal directions, geographic scope, and legend interpretation. Our paper demonstrates the potential of using VQA to support reproducibility assessment and highlights the outstanding issues that need to be addressed to achieve accurate, trustworthy map descriptions, thereby reducing the time and effort required by human evaluators.

U-Prithvi: Integrating a Foundation Model and U-Net for Enhanced Flood Inundation Mapping

Abstract
In recent years, large pre-trained models, commonly referred to as foundation models, have become increasingly popular for various tasks leveraging transfer learning. This trend has expanded to remote sensing, where transformer-based foundation models such as Prithvi, msGFM, and SatSwinMAE have been utilized for a range of applications. While these transformer-based models, particularly the Prithvi model, exhibit strong generalization capabilities, they have limitations on capturing fine-grained details compared to convolutional neural network architectures like U-Net in segmentation tasks. In this paper, we propose a novel architecture, U-Prithvi, which combines the strengths of the Prithvi transformer with those of U-Net. We introduce a RandomHalfMaskLayer to ensure balanced learning from both models during training. Our approach is evaluated on the Sen1Floods11 dataset for flood inundation mapping, and experimental results demonstrate better performance of U-Prithvi over both individual models, achieving improved performance on out-of-sample data. While this principle is illustrated using the Prithvi model, it is easily adaptable to other foundation models.
