Online Steiner Forest with Recourse

Abstract
In the online Steiner forest problem we are given a graph G, and a sequence of terminal pairs (u_i,v_i) which arrive in an online fashion. We are asked to maintain a low-cost subgraph in which each u_i is connected to v_i for all the pairs that have arrived so far. If we are not allowed to delete edges from our solution, then the best possible competitive ratio is Θ(log n). In this work, we initiate the study of low-recourse algorithms for online Steiner forest. We give an algorithm that maintains a constant-competitive solution and has an amortized recourse of O(log n), i.e., inserts and deletes O(log n) edges per demand on average.

Engineering Algorithms for Dynamic Greedy Set Cover

Authors: Amitai Uzrad

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 371, 24th International Symposium on Experimental Algorithms (SEA 2026)

Abstract
In the dynamic set cover problem, the input is a dynamic universe of elements and a fixed collection of sets. As elements are inserted or deleted, the goal is to efficiently maintain an approximate minimum set cover. While the past decade has seen significant theoretical breakthroughs for this problem, a notable gap remains between theoretical design and practical performance, as no comprehensive experimental study currently exists to validate these results. In this paper, we bridge this gap by implementing and evaluating four greedy-based dynamic algorithms across a diverse range of real-world instances. We derive our implementations from state-of-the-art frameworks - such as [GKKP(STOC'17); SU(STOC'23); SUZ(FOCS'24)] - which we simplify by identifying and modifying intricate subroutines that optimize asymptotic bounds but hinder practical performance. We evaluate these algorithms based on solution quality (set cover size) and efficiency, which comprises update time - the time required to update the solution following each insertion/deletion - and recourse - the number of changes made to the solution per update. Each algorithm uses a parameter β to balance quality against efficiency; we investigate the influence of this tradeoff parameter on each algorithm and then perform a comparative analysis to evaluate the algorithms against each other. Our results provide the first practical insights into which algorithmic strategies provide the most value in realistic scenarios.

Submodular Max-Min Allocation Under Identical Valuations

Authors: Kimon Boehmer

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 370, 20th Scandinavian Symposium on Algorithm Theory (SWAT 2026)

Abstract
In the problem of Submodular Max-Min Allocation, we are given a set of items, a set of players, and monotone submodular valuation functions that represent the satisfaction of a player with a certain subset of items. The goal is to find an allocation of the items to the players that maximizes the lowest satisfaction among all players. We study this problem in the special case where all players have the same valuation function. We devise a greedy algorithm which gives a 0.4-approximation, improving the previously best factor of 10/27 ≈ 0.37 by Uziahu and Feige. Furthermore, we study the integrality gap of the configuration LP when players have identical valuations. By constructing a variable assignment to the dual from a primal integral solution, we give the first constant upper bound on the integrality gap for submodular valuations. Generalizing the result to the case where players' allocations must be independent in k given matroids, we derive a 𝒪(k)-estimation algorithm for max-min allocation subject to k matroid constraints under identical valuations.

One Color Makes All the Difference in the Tractability of Partial Coloring in Semi-Streaming

Authors: Avinandan Das

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 370, 20th Scandinavian Symposium on Algorithm Theory (SWAT 2026)

Abstract
This paper investigates the semi-streaming complexity of k-partial coloring, a generalization of proper graph coloring. For k ≥ 1, a k-partial coloring requires that each vertex v in an n-node graph is assigned a color such that at least min{k, deg(v)} of its neighbors are assigned colors different from its own. This framework naturally extends classical coloring problems: specifically, k-partial (k+1)-coloring and k-partial k-coloring generalize (Δ+1)-proper coloring and Δ-proper coloring, respectively. Prior works of Assadi, Chen, and Khanna [SODA 2019] and Assadi, Kumar, and Mittal [TheoretiCS 2023] show that both (Δ+1)-proper coloring and Δ-proper coloring admit one-pass randomized semi-streaming algorithms. We explore whether these efficiency gains extend to their partial coloring generalizations and reveal a sharp computational threshold: while k-partial (k+1)-coloring admits a one-pass randomized semi-streaming algorithm, the k-partial k-coloring remains semi-streaming intractable, effectively demonstrating a "dichotomy of one color" in the streaming model.

Online Hitting Set for Axis-Aligned Squares

Authors: Minati De, Satyam Singh, and Csaba D. Tóth

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 370, 20th Scandinavian Symposium on Algorithm Theory (SWAT 2026)

Abstract
Given a set P of n points in the plane and a sequence of axis-aligned squares that arrive in an online fashion, the online hitting set problem consists of maintaining, by adding new points from P if necessary, a hitting set H ⊆ P, which contains at least one point in every input square that has already arrived. We present an O(log n)-competitive deterministic algorithm for this problem. The competitive ratio is the best possible, apart from constant factors. In fact, this is the first O(log n)-competitive algorithm for the online hitting set problem that works for geometric objects of arbitrary sizes (i.e., unbounded scaling factors) in the plane. We further generalize this result to positive homothets of a polygon with k ≥ 3 vertices in the plane and provide an O(k²log n)-competitive algorithm.

Constant-Factor Approximations for Doubly Constrained Fair k-Center, k-Median and k-Means

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 370, 20th Scandinavian Symposium on Algorithm Theory (SWAT 2026)

Abstract
We study discrete k-clustering problems in general metric spaces that are constrained by a combination of two different fairness conditions within the demographic fairness model. Given a metric space (P,d), where every point in P is equipped with a protected attribute, and a number k, the goal is to partition P into k clusters with a designated center each, such that a center-based objective function is minimized and the attributes are fairly distributed with respect to the following two fairness concepts: 1) group fairness: We aim for clusters with balanced numbers of attributes by specifying lower and upper bounds for the desired attribute proportions. 2) diverse center selection: Clusters have natural representatives, i.e., their centers. We ask for a balanced set of representatives by specifying the desired number of centers to choose from each attribute. Dickerson, Esmaeili, Morgenstern, and Pena [John P. Dickerson et al., 2023] denote the combination of these two constraints as doubly constrained fair clustering. They present algorithms whose guarantees depend on the best known approximation factors for either of these problems. Currently, this implies an 8-approximation with a small additive violation on the group fairness constraint. For k-center, we improve this approximation factor to 4 with a small additive violation. This guarantee also depends on the currently best algorithm for DS-fair k-center given by Jones, Nguyen and Nguyen [Matthew Jones et al., 2020]. For k-median and k-means, we propose the first constant-factor approximation algorithms. Our algorithms transform a solution that satisfies diverse center selection into a doubly constrained fair clustering using an LP-based approach. Furthermore, our results are generalizable to other center-selection constraints, such as matroid k-clustering and knapsack constraints.

Serving Clients Fairly: On Facility Location and k-Median with Fair Outliers

Authors: Rajni Dabas, Samir Khuller, and Emilie Rivkin

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 368, 7th Symposium on Foundations of Responsible Computing (FORC 2026)

Abstract
Classical clustering problems such as Facility Location and k-Median aim to efficiently serve a set of clients from a subset of facilities - minimizing the total cost of facility openings and client assignments in Facility Location, and minimizing assignment (service) cost under a facility count constraint in k-Median. These problems are highly sensitive to outliers, and therefore researchers have studied variants that allow excluding a small number of clients as outliers to reduce cost. However, in many real-world settings, clients belong to different demographic or functional groups, and unconstrained outlier removal can disproportionately exclude certain groups, raising fairness concerns, especially when the facilities correspond to critically needed facilities for emergencies such as fire stations, hospitals and other emergency services. We study Facility Location with Fair Outliers, where each group is allowed a specified number of outliers, and the objective is to minimize total cost while respecting group-wise fairness constraints. We present a bicriteria approximation with a O(1/ε) approximation factor and (1+ 2ε) factor violation in outliers per group. For k-Median with Fair Outliers, we design a bicriteria approximation with a 4(1+ω/ε) approximation factor and (ω + ε) violation in outliers per group improving on prior work by avoiding dependence on k in outlier violations. We also prove that the problems are W[1]-hard parameterized by ω. We complement our algorithmic contributions with a detailed empirical analysis, demonstrating that fairness can be achieved with negligible increase in cost and that the integrality gap of the standard LP is small in practice.

Tradeoffs in Privacy, Welfare, and Fairness for Facility Location

Authors: Sara Fish, Yannai A. Gonczarowski, Jason Z. Tang, and Salil Vadhan

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 368, 7th Symposium on Foundations of Responsible Computing (FORC 2026)

Abstract
The differentially private (DP) facility location problem seeks to determine a socially optimal placement for a public facility while ensuring that each participating agent’s location remains private. In order to privatize its input data, a DP mechanism must inject noise into its output distribution, producing a placement that will have lower expected social welfare than the optimal spot for the facility. The privacy-induced welfare loss can be viewed as the "cost of privacy," illustrating a tradeoff between social welfare and privacy that has been the focus of prior work. Yet, the imposition of privacy also induces a third consideration that has not been similarly studied: fairness in how the "cost of privacy" is distributed across individuals. For instance, a mechanism may satisfy differential privacy with minimal social welfare loss, yet still be undesirable if that loss falls entirely on one individual. In this paper, we quantify this new notion of unfairness and design mechanisms for facility location that attempt to simultaneously optimize across these three objectives of privacy, social welfare, and fairness. Under this setup, we first derive an impossibility result, showing that privacy and fairness cannot be simultaneously guaranteed over all possible datasets that could represent the locations of individuals in a population. We then consider a relaxation of the original problem that still requires worst-case differential privacy, but only seeks fairness and appealing social welfare over smaller, more "realistic-looking" families of datasets. For this relaxation, we construct a DP mechanism and demonstrate that it is simultaneously optimal (or, for a harder family of datasets, near-optimal up to small factors) on fairness and social welfare. This suggests that while there is a tradeoff between privacy and each of social welfare and fairness, there is no additional tradeoff when we consider all three objectives simultaneously, provided that the population data is sufficiently natural.

Computational Hardness of Private Coreset

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 368, 7th Symposium on Foundations of Responsible Computing (FORC 2026)

Abstract
We study the problem of differentially private (DP) computation of coreset for the k-means objective. For a given input set of points, a coreset is another set of points such that the k-means objective for any candidate solution is preserved up to a multiplicative (1 ± α) factor (and some additive factor). We prove the first computational lower bounds for this problem. Specifically, assuming the existence of one-way functions, we show that no polynomial-time (ε, 1/n^{ω(1)})-DP algorithm can compute a coreset for k-means in the 𝓁_∞-metric for some constant α > 0 (and some constant additive factor), even for k = 3. For k-means in the Euclidean metric, we show a similar result but only for α = Θ(1/d²), where d is the dimension.

Nearly-Optimal Private Selection via Gaussian Mechanism

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 368, 7th Symposium on Foundations of Responsible Computing (FORC 2026)

Abstract
Steinke [2025] recently asked the following intriguing open question: Can we solve the differentially private selection problem with nearly-optimal error by only (adaptively) invoking Gaussian mechanism on low-sensitivity queries? We resolve this question positively. In particular, for a candidate set 𝒴, we achieve error guarantee of Õ(log |𝒴|), which is within a factor of (log log |𝒴|)^{O(1)} of the exponential mechanism [McSherry and Talwar, 2007]. This improves on Steinke’s mechanism which achieves an error of O(log^{3/2} |𝒴|).

Abstract
The k-means problem is a classic objective for modeling clustering in a metric space. Given a set of points in a metric space, the goal is to find k representative points so as to minimize the sum of the squared distances from each point to its closest representative. In this work, we study the approximability of k-means in Euclidean spaces parameterized by the number of clusters, k. In seminal works, de la Vega, Karpinski, Kenyon, and Rabani [STOC'03] and Kumar, Sabharwal, and Sen [JACM'10] showed how to obtain a (1+ε)-approximation for high-dimensional Euclidean k-means in time 2^{(k/ε)^O(1)} ⋅ dn^O(1). In this work, we introduce a new fine-grained hypothesis called Exponential Time for Expanders Hypothesis (XXH) which roughly asserts that there are no non-trivial exponential time approximation algorithms for the vertex cover problem on near perfect vertex expanders. Assuming XXH, we close the above long line of work on approximating Euclidean k-means by showing that there is no 2^{(k/ε)^{1-o(1)}} ⋅ n^O(1) time algorithm achieving a (1+ε)-approximation for k-means in Euclidean space. This lower bound is tight as it matches the algorithm given by Feldman, Monemizadeh, and Sohler [SoCG'07] whose runtime is 2^O(k/ε) + O(ndk). Furthermore, assuming XXH, we show that the seminal O(n^{kd+1}) runtime exact algorithm of Inaba, Katoh, and Imai [SoCG'94] for k-means is optimal for small values of k.

Almost-Optimal Upper and Lower Bounds for Clustering in Low Dimensional Euclidean Spaces

Abstract
The k-median and k-means clustering objectives are classic objectives for modeling clustering in a metric space. Given a set of points in a metric space, the goal of the k-median (resp. k-means) problem is to find k representative points so as to minimize the sum of the distances (resp. sum of squared distances) from each point to its closest representative. Cohen-Addad, Feldmann, and Saulpic [JACM'21] showed how to obtain a (1+ε)-factor approximation in low-dimensional Euclidean metric for both the k-median and k-means problems in near-linear time 2^{(1/ε)^O(d²)} n ⋅ polylog(n) (where d is the dimension and n is the number of input points). We improve this running time to 2^{O(1/ε)^{d-1}} ⋅ n ⋅ polylog(n), and show an almost matching lower bound: under the Gap Exponential Time Hypothesis for 3-SAT, there is no 2^o(1/ε^{d-1}) n^O(1) algorithm achieving a (1+ε)-approximation for k-means.

FPT Approximations for Capacitated Sum of Radii and Diameters

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 367, 42nd International Symposium on Computational Geometry (SoCG 2026)

Abstract
The Capacitated Sum of Radii problem involves partitioning a set of points P, where each point p ∈ P has capacity U_p, into k clusters that minimize the sum of cluster radii, such that the number of points in the cluster centered at point p is at most U_p. We begin by showing that the problem is APX-hard, and that under gap-ETH there is no parameterized approximation scheme (FPT-AS). We then construct a ≈5.83-approximation algorithm in FPT time (improving a previous ≈7.61 approximation in FPT time). Our results also hold when the objective is a general monotone symmetric norm of radii. We also improve the approximation factors for the uniform capacity case, and for the closely related problem of Capacitated Sum of Diameters.

Approximating Pareto Sum via Bounded Monotone Min-Plus Convolution

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 367, 42nd International Symposium on Computational Geometry (SoCG 2026)

Abstract
The Pareto sum of two-dimensional point sets P and Q in ℝ² is defined as the skyline of the points in their Minkowski sum. The problem of efficiently computing the Pareto sum arises frequently in bi-criteria optimization algorithms. Prior work establishes that computing the Pareto sum of sets P and Q of size n suffers from conditional lower bounds that rule out strongly subquadratic O(n^{2-ε})-time algorithms, even when the output size is Θ(n). Naturally, we ask: How efficiently can we approximate Pareto sums, both in theory and practice? Can we beat the near-quadratic-time state of the art for exact algorithms? On the theoretical side, we formulate a notion of additively approximate Pareto sets and show that computing an approximate Pareto set is fine-grained equivalent to Bounded Monotone Min-Plus Convolution. Leveraging a remarkable Õ(n^{1.5})-time algorithm for the latter problem (Chi, Duan, Xie, Zhang; STOC '22), we thus obtain a strongly subquadratic (and conditionally optimal) approximation algorithm for computing Pareto sums. On the practical side, we engineer different algorithmic approaches for approximating Pareto sets on realistic instances. Our implementations enable a granular trade-off between approximation quality and running time/output size compared to the state of the art for exact algorithms established in (Funke, Hespe, Sanders, Storandt, Truschel; Algorithmica '25). Perhaps surprisingly, the (theoretical) connection to Bounded Monotone Min-Plus Convolution remains beneficial even for our implementations: in particular, we implement a simplified, yet still subquadratic version of an algorithm due to Chi, Duan, Xie and Zhang, which on some sufficiently large instances outperforms the competing quadratic-time approaches.

Optimal Randomized Clustering of Matrices

Authors: Mustafa Alper Gunes and Assaf Naor

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 367, 42nd International Symposium on Computational Geometry (SoCG 2026)

Abstract
If X = (𝖬_n(ℝ),‖⋅‖_X) is a unitarily invariant normed space, i.e., ‖𝖴𝖠𝖵‖_X = ‖𝖠‖_X for every matrix 𝖠 ∈ 𝖬_n(ℝ) and every two orthogonal matrices 𝖴,𝖵 ∈ 𝖬_n(ℝ), then we evaluate up to universal constant factors the smallest σ > 0 for which there is a probability distribution over partitions of X into clusters of diameter at most 1 yet for every two matrices 𝖠,𝖡 ∈ 𝖬_n(ℝ) the probability that they fall into distinct clusters is at most σ times the X-distance between 𝖠 and 𝖡. Specifically, we prove that this infimal σ, which is called the separation modulus of X and is denoted SEP(X), satisfies: (1) SEP(X) = Θ(√n⋅ ‖𝖨_n‖_X⋅ diam(B_X)), where 𝖨_n is the n-by-n identity matrix and diam(B_X) is the diameter with respect to the standard Euclidean metric on 𝖬_n(ℝ) of the unit ball B_ X of X. Our proof of (1) proceeds through an asymptotic evaluation of the spectral gap of the Laplacian with Dirichlet boundary conditions on B_ X, which we achieve by exact computations for a Jacobi orthogonal random matrix ensemble. Assuming oracle access to norm evaluations in X, by combining (1) with a new deterministic algorithm for a O(1)-approximation of the diameter of convex bodies in ℝⁿ that are given by a weak membership oracle and are symmetric with respect to coordinate permutations and reflections about the standard axes (this task is famously known to be impossible in the absence of such symmetries), we get an oracle polynomial time algorithm whose output is the separation modulus of X up to universal constant factors. Another example of a consequence of (1) is that for each m ∈ {1,…,n} the separation modulus of the m'th Ky Fan norm on 𝖬_n(ℝ) is bounded from above and from below by universal constant multiples of m√n if m ⩾ √n, and of n if m ⩽ √n. We also deduce from (1) an upper bound on the Lipschitz extension modulus of X that improves over the previously best-known bound even in the special case when X is 𝖬_n(ℝ) equipped with the 𝓁₂ⁿ → 𝓁₂ⁿ operator norm.
