Advancing Intelligent Personal Assistants for Human Spaceflight

Abstract
The Artemis program and upcoming missions to Mars mark a new era of human space exploration that will require new tools to support astronaut autonomy in the absence of real-time communication with Earth. This paper investigates the role of voice-based intelligent personal assistants (IPAs) in future crewed space missions. Through semi-structured interviews with astronauts (n=3) and spaceflight experts (n=12), we identify key user-centered design requirements for IPAs in this uniquely constrained and safety-critical environment. Our thematic analysis reveals core requirements for flexibility, reliability, offline capability, and multimodal interaction. Drawing on these findings, we outline design guidelines for next-generation IPAs and discuss how technologies such as retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), knowledge graphs, and augmented reality should be combined to support flexible, reliable, and multimodal IPAs for future human spaceflight missions.

Toward an Earth-Independent System for EVA Mission Planning: Integrating Physical Models, Domain Knowledge, and Agentic RAG to Provide Explainable LLM-Based Decision Support

Abstract
We propose a unified framework for an Earth‑independent AI system that provides explainable, context‑aware decision support for EVA mission planning by integrating six core components: a fine‑tuned EVA domain LLM, a retrieval‑augmented knowledge base, a short-term memory store, physical simulation models, an agentic orchestration layer, and a multimodal user interface. To ground our design, we analyze the current roles and substitution potential of the Mission Control Center - identifying which procedural and analytical functions can be automated onboard while preserving human oversight for experiential and strategic tasks. Building on this framework, we introduce RASAGE (Retrieval & Simulation Augmented Guidance Agent for Exploration), a proof‑of‑concept toolset that combines Microsoft Phi‑4‑mini‑instruct with a FAISS (Facebook AI Similarity Search)‑powered EVA knowledge base and custom A* path planning and hypogravity metabolic models to generate grounded, traceable EVA plans. We outline a staged validation strategy to evaluate improvements in route efficiency, metabolic prediction accuracy, anomaly response effectiveness, and crew trust under realistic communication delays. Our findings demonstrate the feasibility of replicating key Mission Control functions onboard, enhancing crew autonomy, reducing cognitive load, and improving safety for deep‑space exploration missions.

Streaming Algorithms for Conflict-Free Coloring

Abstract
Conflict-free coloring of a hypergraph ℋ = (V,ℰ) using k colors is a function f:V → {1,2, …, k} such that for all E ∈ ℰ, there exists a vertex v ∈ E with a unique color. That is, f(v)≠ f(u) for all u ∈ E ⧵ {v}. The minimum k for which ℋ has a conflict-free coloring using k colors is called the conflict-free chromatic number of ℋ. For a simple graph G, a conflict-free coloring of the hypergraph with vertex set V(G) and edge set being the set of all closed neighborhoods of the vertices in G is called a conflict-free closed neighborhood (CFCN) coloring of G. CFCN chromatic number, denoted by χ_{CN}(G), is the minimum number of colors used in a conflict-free closed neighborhood coloring of G. Analogously, we define conflict-free open neighborhood (CFON) coloring and CFON chromatic number, χ_{ON}(G), of a graph G. There are various works on proving upper and lower bounds of χ_{ON}(G) and χ_{CN}(G). In this work, we develop streaming algorithms for CFCN and CFON coloring of a graph where the number of colors used matches the best-known upper bounds of χ_{ON}(G) and χi_{CN}(G). Our algorithms use as input an edge stream of the graph G in the insertion-only model. Our results and the best-known bounds for χ_{ON}(G) and χ_{CN}(G) are given below. 1. Pach and Tardos [Combinatorics, Probability and Computing, 2009] showed that, for any n vertex graph G, χ_{CN}(G) = O(ln² n). Glebov, Szabó and Tardos [Combinatorics, Probability and Computing, 2014] showed the existence of graphs G with χ_{CN}(G) = Ω(ln² n). We design a randomized single-pass semi-streaming algorithm (i.e., it uses O(n ln n) space that, given an n-vertex graph G, outputs a CFCN coloring of G using O(ln² n) colors with probability at least (1-2/n). 2. Bhyravarapu, Kalyanasundaram, Mathew [Journal of Graph Theory, 2021] showed that for a graph G with maximum degree Δ, χ_{CN}(G) = O(ln² Δ). The methods used by our algorithms give rise to a simpler, alternate proof for this bound. 3. It is known that χ_{ON}(G) ≤ 1/2 + √{2n + 1/4} (See Pach and Tardos [Combinatorics, Probability and Computing, 2009] and Ph.D. thesis of Cheilaris). This bound is asymptotically tight. - We design a deterministic single-pass O(n√n) space streaming algorithm that, given a graph G on n vertices, finds a CFON coloring using 2√n colors. - We design a randomized, single-pass, semi-streaming algorithm to find a CFON coloring of a graph G using O(√n ln² n) colors with success probability at least (1-2/n). 4. It is known that χ_{ON}(G) ≤ Δ+1, where Δ is the maximum degree of a vertex in G. Further, there are graphs G known with χ_{ON}(G) = Δ + 1. We design a randomized two-pass semi-streaming algorithm (uses O(1/(ε²) n ln³ n) space) that outputs a CFON coloring of G using (1+ε)Δ colors, for any ε > 0, with a probability at least (1-1/n).

On the Complexity of Recoverable Robust Optimization in the Polynomial Hierarchy

Abstract
Recoverable robust optimization is a popular multi-stage approach, in which it is possible to adjust a first-stage solution after the uncertain cost scenario is revealed. We consider recoverable robust optimization in combination with discrete budgeted uncertainty. In this setting, it seems plausible that many problems become Σ^p₃-complete and therefore it is impossible to find compact IP formulations of them (unless the unlikely conjecture NP = Σ^p₃ holds). Even though this seems plausible, few concrete results of this kind are known. In this paper, we fill that gap of knowledge. We consider recoverable robust optimization for the nominal problems of Sat, 3Sat, vertex cover, dominating set, set cover, hitting set, feedback vertex set, feedback arc set, uncapacitated facility location, p-center, p-median, independent set, clique, subset sum, knapsack, partition, scheduling, Hamiltonian path/cycle (directed/undirected), TSP, k-directed disjoint path (k ≥ 2), and Steiner tree. We show that for each of these problems, and for each of three widely used distance measures, the recoverable robust problem becomes Σ^p₃-complete. Concretely, we show that all these problems share a certain abstract property and prove that this property implies that their robust recoverable counterpart is Σ^p₃-complete. This reveals the insight that all the above problems are Σ^p₃-complete "for the same reason". Our result extends a recent framework by Grüne and Wulf.

Independence and Domination on Bounded-Treewidth Graphs: Integer, Rational, and Irrational Distances

Abstract
The distance-d variants of Independent Set and Dominating Set problems have been extensively studied from different algorithmic viewpoints. In particular, the complexity of these problems are well understood on bounded-treewidth graphs [Katsikarelis, Lampis, and Paschos, Discret. Appl. Math 2022][Borradaile and Le, IPEC 2016]: given a tree decomposition of width t, the two problems can be solved in time d^t⋅ n^O(1) and (2d+1)^t⋅ n^O(1), respectively. Furthermore, assuming the Strong Exponential-Time Hypothesis (SETH), the base constants are best possible in these running times: they cannot be improved to d-ε and 2d+1-ε, respectively, for any ε > 0. We investigate continuous versions of these problems in a setting introduced by Megiddo and Tamir [SICOMP 1983], where every edge is modeled by a unit-length interval of points. In the δ-Dispersion problem, the task is to find a maximum number of points (possibly inside edges) that are pairwise at distance at least δ from each other. Similarly, in the δ-Covering problem, the task is to find a minimum number of points (possibly inside edges) such that every point of the graph (including those inside edges) is at distance at most δ from the selected point set. We provide a comprehensive understanding of these two problems on bounded-treewidth graphs. 1) Let δ = a/b with a and b being coprime. If a ≤ 2, then δ-Dispersion is polynomial-time solvable. For a ≥ 3, given a tree decomposition of width t, the problem can be solved in time (2a)^t⋅ n^O(1), and, assuming SETH, there is no (2a-ε)^t⋅n^{O(1)} time algorithm for any ε > 0. 2) Let δ = a/b with a and b being coprime. If a = 1, then δ-Covering is polynomial-time solvable. For a ≥ 2, given a tree decomposition of width t, the problem can be solved in time ((2+2(bod 2)) a)^t⋅ n^O(1), and, assuming SETH, there is no ((2+2(bod 2))a -ε)^t⋅n^O(1) time algorithm for any ε > 0. 3) For every fixed irrational number δ > 0 satisfying some mild computability condition, both δ-Dispersion and δ-Covering can be solved in time n^O(t) on graphs of treewidth t. We show a very explicitly defined irrational number δ = (4∑_{j=1}^∞ 2^{-2^j})^{-1} ≈ 0.790085 such that δ-Dispersion and δ/2-Covering are W[1]-hard parameterized by the treewidth t of the input graph, and, assuming ETH, cannot be solved in time f(t)⋅n^o(t). As a key step in obtaining these results, we extend earlier results on distance-d versions of Independent Set and Dominating Set: We determine the exact complexity of these problems in the special case when the input graph arises from some graph G' by subdividing every edge exactly b times.

From Chinese Postman to Salesman and Beyond: Shortest Tour δ-Covering All Points on All Edges

Abstract
A well-studied continuous model of graphs, introduced by Dearing and Francis [Transportation Science, 1974], considers each edge as a continuous unit-length interval of points. For δ ≥ 0, we introduce the problem δ-Tour, where the objective is to find the shortest tour that comes within a distance of δ of every point on every edge. It can be observed that 0-Tour is essentially equivalent to the Chinese Postman Problem, which is solvable in polynomial time. In contrast, 1/2-Tour is essentially equivalent to the graphic Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP), which is NP-hard but admits a constant-factor approximation in polynomial time. We investigate δ-Tour for other values of δ, noting that the problem’s behavior and the insights required to understand it differ significantly across various δ regimes. On the one hand, we first examine the approximability of the problem for every fixed δ > 0: 1) For every fixed 0 < δ < 3/2, the problem δ-Tour admits a constant-factor approximation and is APX-hard, while for every fixed δ ≥ 3/2, the problem admits an O(log n)-approximation in polynomial time and has no polynomial-time o(log n)-approximation, unless P = NP. Our techniques also yield a new APX-hardness result for graphic TSP on cubic bipartite graphs. When parameterizing by the length of a shortest tour, it is relatively easy to show that 3/2 is the threshold of fixed-parameter tractability: 2) For every fixed 0 < δ < 3/2, the problem δ-Tour is fixed-parameter tractable (FPT) when parameterized by the length of a shortest tour, while it is W[2]-hard for every fixed δ ≥ 3/2. On the other hand, if δ is considered to be part of the input, then an interesting nontrivial phenomenon appears when δ is a constant fraction of the number of vertices: 3) If δ is part of the input, then the problem can be solved in time f(k)n^O(k), where k = ⌈n/δ⌉; however, assuming the Exponential-Time Hypothesis (ETH), there is no algorithm that solves the problem and runs in time f(k)n^o(k/log k).

How Does Knowledge Evolve in Open Knowledge Graphs?

Abstract
Openly available, collaboratively edited Knowledge Graphs (KGs) are key platforms for the collective management of evolving knowledge. The present work aims t o provide an analysis of the obstacles related to investigating and processing specifically this central aspect of evolution in KGs. To this end, we discuss (i) the dimensions of evolution in KGs, (ii) the observability of evolution in existing, open, collaboratively constructed Knowledge Graphs over time, and (iii) possible metrics to analyse this evolution. We provide an overview of relevant state-of-the-art research, ranging from metrics developed for Knowledge Graphs specifically to potential methods from related fields such as network science. Additionally, we discuss technical approaches - and their current limitations - related to storing, analysing and processing large and evolving KGs in terms of handling typical KG downstream tasks.

Recognizing H-Graphs - Beyond Circular-Arc Graphs

Abstract
In 1992 Biró, Hujter and Tuza introduced, for every fixed connected graph H, the class of H-graphs, defined as the intersection graphs of connected subgraphs of some subdivision of H. Such classes of graphs are related to many known graph classes: for example, K₂-graphs coincide with interval graphs, K₃-graphs with circular-arc graphs, the union of T-graphs, where T ranges over all trees, coincides with chordal graphs. Recently, quite a lot of research has been devoted to understanding the tractability border for various computational problems, such as recognition or isomorphism testing, in classes of H-graphs for different graphs H. In this work we undertake this research topic, focusing on the recognition problem. Chaplick, Töpfer, Voborník, and Zeman showed an XP-algorithm testing whether a given graph is a T-graph, where the parameter is the size of the tree T. In particular, for every fixed tree T the recognition of T-graphs can be solved in polynomial time. Tucker showed a polynomial time algorithm recognizing K₃-graphs (circular-arc graphs). On the other hand, Chaplick et al. showed also that for every fixed graph H containing two distinct cycles sharing an edge, the recognition of H-graphs is NP-hard. The main two results of this work narrow the gap between the NP-hard and 𝖯 cases of H-graph recognition. First, we show that the recognition of H-graphs is NP-hard when H contains two distinct cycles. On the other hand, we show a polynomial-time algorithm recognizing L-graphs, where L is a graph containing a cycle and an edge attached to it (which we call lollipop graphs). Our work leaves open the recognition problems of M-graphs for every unicyclic graph M different from a cycle and a lollipop.

Dispersing Obnoxious Facilities on Graphs by Rounding Distances

Abstract
We continue the study of δ-dispersion, a continuous facility location problem on a graph where all edges have unit length and where the facilities may also be positioned in the interior of the edges. The goal is to position as many facilities as possible subject to the condition that every two facilities have distance at least δ from each other. Our main technical contribution is an efficient procedure to "round-up" distance δ. It transforms a δ-dispersed set S into a δ^⋆-dispersed set S^⋆ of same size where distance δ^⋆ is a potentially slightly larger rational a/b with a numerator a upper bounded by the longest (not-induced) path in the input graph. Based on this rounding procedure and connections to the distance-d independent set problem we derive a number of algorithmic results. When parameterized by treewidth, the problem is in XP. When parameterized by treedepth the problem is FPT and has a matching lower bound on its time complexity under ETH. Moreover, we can also settle the parameterized complexity with the solution size as parameter using our rounding technique: δ-Dispersion is FPT for every δ ≤ 2 and W[1]-hard for every δ > 2. Further, we show that δ-dispersion is NP-complete for every fixed irrational distance δ, which was left open in a previous work.

An Investigation of the Recoverable Robust Assignment Problem

Abstract
We investigate the so-called recoverable robust assignment problem on complete bipartite graphs, a mainstream problem in robust optimization: For two given linear cost functions c₁ and c₂ on the edges and a given integer k, the goal is to find two perfect matchings M₁ and M₂ that minimize the objective value c₁(M₁)+c₂(M₂), subject to the constraint that M₁ and M₂ have at least k edges in common. We derive a variety of results on this problem. First, we show that the problem is W[1]-hard with respect to parameter k, and also with respect to the complementary parameter k' = n/2-k. This hardness result holds even in the highly restricted special case where both cost functions c₁ and c₂ only take the values 0 and 1. (On the other hand, containment of the problem in XP is straightforward to see.) Next, as a positive result we construct a polynomial time algorithm for the special case where one cost function is Monge, whereas the other one is Anti-Monge. Finally, we study the variant where matching M₁ is frozen, and where the optimization goal is to compute the best corresponding matching M₂. This problem variant is known to be contained in the randomized parallel complexity class RNC², and we show that it is at least as hard as the infamous problem Exact Red-Blue Matching in Bipartite Graphs whose computational complexity is a long-standing open problem.

Recognizing Proper Tree-Graphs

Abstract
We investigate the parameterized complexity of the recognition problem for the proper H-graphs. The H-graphs are the intersection graphs of connected subgraphs of a subdivision of a multigraph H, and the properness means that the containment relationship between the representations of the vertices is forbidden. The class of H-graphs was introduced as a natural (parameterized) generalization of interval and circular-arc graphs by Biró, Hujter, and Tuza in 1992, and the proper H-graphs were introduced by Chaplick et al. in WADS 2019 as a generalization of proper interval and circular-arc graphs. For these graph classes, H may be seen as a structural parameter reflecting the distance of a graph to a (proper) interval graph, and as such gained attention as a structural parameter in the design of efficient algorithms. We show the following results. - For a tree T with t nodes, it can be decided in 2^{𝒪(t² log t)} ⋅ n³ time, whether an n-vertex graph G is a proper T-graph. For yes-instances, our algorithm outputs a proper T-representation. This proves that the recognition problem for proper H-graphs, where H required to be a tree, is fixed-parameter tractable when parameterized by the size of T. Previously only NP-completeness was known. - Contrasting to the first result, we prove that if H is not constrained to be a tree, then the recognition problem becomes much harder. Namely, we show that there is a multigraph H with 4 vertices and 5 edges such that it is NP-complete to decide whether G is a proper H-graph.

The Complexity of Packing Edge-Disjoint Paths

Abstract
We introduce and study the complexity of Path Packing. Given a graph G and a list of paths, the task is to embed the paths edge-disjoint in G. This generalizes the well known Hamiltonian-Path problem. Since Hamiltonian Path is efficiently solvable for graphs of small treewidth, we study how this result translates to the much more general Path Packing. On the positive side, we give an FPT-algorithm on trees for the number of paths as parameter. Further, we give an XP-algorithm with the combined parameters maximal degree, number of connected components and number of nodes of degree at least three. Surprisingly the latter is an almost tight result by runtime and parameterization. We show an ETH lower bound almost matching our runtime. Moreover, if two of the three values are constant and one is unbounded the problem becomes NP-hard. Further, we study restrictions to the given list of paths. On the positive side, we present an FPT-algorithm parameterized by the sum of the lengths of the paths. Packing paths of length two is polynomial time solvable, while packing paths of length three is NP-hard. Finally, even the spacial case Exact Path Packing where the paths have to cover every edge in G exactly once is already NP-hard for two paths on 4-regular graphs.

Abstract
We study a continuous facility location problem on a graph where all edges have unit length and where the facilities may also be positioned in the interior of the edges. The goal is to position as many facilities as possible subject to the condition that any two facilities have at least distance delta from each other. We investigate the complexity of this problem in terms of the rational parameter delta. The problem is polynomially solvable, if the numerator of delta is 1 or 2, while all other cases turn out to be NP-hard.
