Resolving Nondeterminism with Randomness

Abstract
We define and study classes of ω-regular automata for which the nondeterminism can be resolved by a policy that uses a combination of memory and randomness on any input word, based solely on the prefix read so far. We examine two settings for providing the input word to an automaton. In the first setting, called adversarial resolvability, the input word is constructed letter-by-letter by an adversary, dependent on the resolver’s previous decisions. In the second setting, called stochastic resolvability, the adversary pre-commits to an infinite word and reveals it letter-by-letter. In each setting, we require the existence of an almost-sure resolver, i.e., a policy that ensures that as long as the adversary provides a word in the language of the underlying nondeterministic automaton, the run constructed by the policy is accepting with probability 1. The class of automata that are adversarially resolvable is the well-studied class of history-deterministic automata. The case of stochastically resolvable automata, on the other hand, defines a novel class. Restricting the class of resolvers in both settings to stochastic policies without memory introduces two additional new classes of automata. We show that the new automata classes offer interesting trade-offs between succinctness, expressivity, and computational complexity, providing a fine gradation between deterministic automata and nondeterministic automata.

Probabilistic Finite Automaton Emptiness Is Undecidable for a Fixed Automaton

Abstract
We construct a probabilistic finite automaton (PFA) with 7 states and an input alphabet of 5 symbols for which the PFA Emptiness Problem is undecidable. The only input for the decision problem is the starting distribution. For the proof, we use reductions from special instances of the Post Correspondence Problem. We also consider some variations: The input alphabet of the PFA can be restricted to a binary alphabet at the expense of a larger number of states. If we allow a rational output value for each state instead of a yes-no acceptance decision, the number of states can even be reduced to 6.

Resolving Nondeterminism by Chance

Abstract
History-deterministic automata are those in which nondeterministic choices can be correctly resolved stepwise: there is a strategy to select a continuation of a run given the next input letter so that if the overall input word admits some accepting run, then the constructed run is also accepting. Motivated by checking qualitative properties in probabilistic verification, we consider the setting where the resolver strategy can randomise and only needs to succeed with lower-bounded probability. We study the expressiveness of such stochastically-resolvable automata as well as consider the decision questions of whether a given automaton has this property. In particular, we show that it is undecidable to check if a given NFA is λ-stochastically resolvable. This problem is decidable for finitely-ambiguous automata. We also present complexity upper and lower bounds for several well-studied classes of automata for which this problem remains decidable.

The Non-Cooperative Rational Synthesis Problem for SPEs and ω-Regular Objectives

Abstract
This paper studies the rational synthesis problem for multi-player games played on graphs when rational players are following subgame perfect equilibria. In these games, one player, the system, declares his strategy upfront, and the other players, composing the environment, then rationally respond by playing strategies forming a subgame perfect equilibrium. We study the complexity of the rational synthesis problem when the players have ω-regular objectives encoded as parity objectives. Our algorithm is based on an encoding into a three-player game with imperfect information, showing that the problem is in 2ExpTime. When the number of environment players is fixed, the problem is in ExpTime and is NP- and coNP-hard. Moreover, for a fixed number of players and reachability objectives, we get a polynomial algorithm.

A Direct Reduction from Stochastic Parity Games to Simple Stochastic Games

Abstract
Significant progress has been recently achieved in developing efficient solutions for simple stochastic games (SSGs), focusing on reachability objectives. While reductions from stochastic parity games (SPGs) to SSGs have been presented in the literature through the use of multiple intermediate game models, a direct and simple reduction has been notably absent. This paper introduces a novel and direct polynomial-time reduction from quantitative SPGs to quantitative SSGs. By leveraging a gadget-based transformation that effectively removes the priority function, we construct an SSG that simulates the behavior of a given SPG. We formally establish the correctness of our direct reduction. Furthermore, we demonstrate that under binary encoding this reduction is polynomial, thereby directly corroborating the known NP ∩ coNP complexity of SPGs and providing new understanding in the relationship between parity and reachability objectives in turn-based stochastic games.

Taming Infinity One Chunk at a Time: Concisely Represented Strategies in One-Counter MDPs

Abstract
Markov decision processes (MDPs) are a canonical model to reason about decision making within a stochastic environment. We study a fundamental class of infinite MDPs: one-counter MDPs (OC-MDPs). They extend finite MDPs via an associated counter taking natural values, thus inducing an infinite MDP over the set of configurations (current state and counter value). We consider two characteristic objectives: reaching a target state (state-reachability), and reaching a target state with counter value zero (selective termination). The synthesis problem for the latter is not known to be decidable and connected to major open problems in number theory. Furthermore, even seemingly simple strategies (e.g., memoryless ones) in OC-MDPs might be impossible to build in practice (due to the underlying infinite configuration space): we need finite, and preferably small, representations. To overcome these obstacles, we introduce two natural classes of concisely represented strategies based on a (possibly infinite) partition of counter values in intervals. For both classes, and both objectives, we study the verification problem (does a given strategy ensure a high enough probability for the objective?), and two synthesis problems (does there exist such a strategy?): one where the interval partition is fixed as input, and one where it is only parameterized. We develop a generic approach based on a compression of the induced infinite MDP that yields decidability in all cases, with all complexities within PSPACE.

The Memory of ω-Regular and BC(Σ⁰₂) Objectives

Abstract
In the context of 2-player zero-sum infinite duration games played on (potentially infinite) graphs, the memory of an objective is the smallest integer k such that in any game won by Eve, she has a strategy with ≤ k states of memory. For ω-regular objectives, checking whether the memory equals a given number k was not known to be decidable. In this work, we focus on objectives in BC(Σ⁰₂), i.e. recognised by a potentially infinite deterministic parity automaton. We provide a class of automata that recognise objectives with memory ≤ k, leading to the following results: - for ω-regular objectives, the memory can be computed in NP; - given two objectives W₁ and W₂ in BC(Σ⁰₂) and assuming W₁ is prefix-independent, the memory of W₁ ∪ W₂ is at most the product of the memories of W₁ and W₂. Our results also apply to chromatic memory, the variant where strategies can update their memory state only depending on which colour is seen.

Promptness and Fairness in Muller LTL Formulas

Abstract
In this paper we consider two different views of the model checking problem for the Linear Temporal Logic (LTL). On the one hand, we consider the universal model checking problem for LTL, where one asks that for a given system and a given formula all the runs of the system satisfy the formula. On the other hand, the fair model checking problem for LTL asks that for a given system and a given formula almost all the runs of the system satisfy the formula. It was shown that these two problems have the same theoretical complexity, i.e. PSPACE-complete. A less expensive fragment was identified in a previous work, namely the Muller fragment, which consists of combinations of repeated reachability properties. We consider prompt LTL formulas (pLTL), that extend LTL with an additional operator, i.e. the prompt-eventually. This operator ensures the existence of a bound such that reachability properties are satisfied within this bound. This extension comes at no cost since the model checking problem remains PSPACE-complete. We show that the corresponding Muller fragment of pLTL, with prompt repeated reachability properties, enjoys similar computational improvements. Another feature of Muller formulas is that the model checking problem becomes easier under the fairness assumption. This distinction is lost in the prompt setting, as we show that the two problems are equivalent instance-wise. Subsequently, we identify a new prefix independent fragment of pLTL for which the fair model checking problem is less expensive than the universal one.

The True Colors of Memory: A Tour of Chromatic-Memory Strategies in Zero-Sum Games on Graphs (Invited Talk)

Abstract
Two-player turn-based zero-sum games on (finite or infinite) graphs are a central framework in theoretical computer science - notably as a tool for controller synthesis, but also due to their connection with logic and automata theory. A crucial challenge in the field is to understand how complex strategies need to be to play optimally, given a type of game and a winning objective. In this invited contribution, we give a tour of recent advances aiming to characterize games where finite-memory strategies suffice (i.e., using a limited amount of information about the past). We mostly focus on so-called chromatic memory, which is limited to using colors - the basic building blocks of objectives - seen along a play to update itself. Chromatic memory has the advantage of being usable in different game graphs, and the corresponding class of strategies turns out to be of great interest to both the practical and the theoretical sides.

Arena-Independent Finite-Memory Determinacy in Stochastic Games

Abstract
We study stochastic zero-sum games on graphs, which are prevalent tools to model decision-making in presence of an antagonistic opponent in a random environment. In this setting, an important question is the one of strategy complexity: what kinds of strategies are sufficient or required to play optimally (e.g., randomization or memory requirements)? Our contributions further the understanding of arena-independent finite-memory (AIFM) determinacy, i.e., the study of objectives for which memory is needed, but in a way that only depends on limited parameters of the game graphs. First, we show that objectives for which pure AIFM strategies suffice to play optimally also admit pure AIFM subgame perfect strategies. Second, we show that we can reduce the study of objectives for which pure AIFM strategies suffice in two-player stochastic games to the easier study of one-player stochastic games (i.e., Markov decision processes). Third, we characterize the sufficiency of AIFM strategies through two intuitive properties of objectives. This work extends a line of research started on deterministic games in [Bouyer et al., 2020] to stochastic ones.

Games Where You Can Play Optimally with Arena-Independent Finite Memory

Abstract
For decades, two-player (antagonistic) games on graphs have been a framework of choice for many important problems in theoretical computer science. A notorious one is controller synthesis, which can be rephrased through the game-theoretic metaphor as the quest for a winning strategy of the system in a game against its antagonistic environment. Depending on the specification, optimal strategies might be simple or quite complex, for example having to use (possibly infinite) memory. Hence, research strives to understand which settings allow for simple strategies. In 2005, Gimbert and Zielonka [Hugo Gimbert and Wieslaw Zielonka, 2005] provided a complete characterization of preference relations (a formal framework to model specifications and game objectives) that admit memoryless optimal strategies for both players. In the last fifteen years however, practical applications have driven the community toward games with complex or multiple objectives, where memory - finite or infinite - is almost always required. Despite much effort, the exact frontiers of the class of preference relations that admit finite-memory optimal strategies still elude us. In this work, we establish a complete characterization of preference relations that admit optimal strategies using arena-independent finite memory, generalizing the work of Gimbert and Zielonka to the finite-memory case. We also prove an equivalent to their celebrated corollary of great practical interest: if both players have optimal (arena-independent-)finite-memory strategies in all one-player games, then it is also the case in all two-player games. Finally, we pinpoint the boundaries of our results with regard to the literature: our work completely covers the case of arena-independent memory (e.g., multiple parity objectives, lower- and upper-bounded energy objectives), and paves the way to the arena-dependent case (e.g., multiple lower-bounded energy objectives).

Life Is Random, Time Is Not: Markov Decision Processes with Window Objectives

Abstract
The window mechanism was introduced by Chatterjee et al. [Krishnendu Chatterjee et al., 2015] to strengthen classical game objectives with time bounds. It permits to synthesize system controllers that exhibit acceptable behaviors within a configurable time frame, all along their infinite execution, in contrast to the traditional objectives that only require correctness of behaviors in the limit. The window concept has proved its interest in a variety of two-player zero-sum games, thanks to the ability to reason about such time bounds in system specifications, but also the increased tractability that it usually yields. In this work, we extend the window framework to stochastic environments by considering the fundamental threshold probability problem in Markov decision processes for window objectives. That is, given such an objective, we want to synthesize strategies that guarantee satisfying runs with a given probability. We solve this problem for the usual variants of window objectives, where either the time frame is set as a parameter, or we ask if such a time frame exists. We develop a generic approach for window-based objectives and instantiate it for the classical mean-payoff and parity objectives, already considered in games. Our work paves the way to a wide use of the window mechanism in stochastic models.

The Complexity of Rational Synthesis for Concurrent Games

Abstract
In this paper, we investigate the rational synthesis problem for concurrent game structures for a variety of objectives ranging from reachability to Muller condition. We propose a new algorithm that establishes the decidability of the non cooperative rational synthesis problem that relies solely on game theoretic techniques as opposed to previous approaches that are logic based. Given an instance of the rational synthesis problem, we construct a zero-sum turn-based game that can be adapted to each one of the class of objectives. We obtain new complexity results. In particular, we show that in the cases of reachability, safety, Büchi, and co-Büchi objectives the problem is in PSpace, providing a tight upper-bound to the PSpace-hardness already established for turn-based games. In the case of Muller objective the problem is in ExpTime. We also obtain positive results when we assume a fixed number of agents, in which case the problem falls into PTime for reachability, safety, Büchi, and co-Büchi objectives.
