Shortest Paths in Geodesic Unit-Disk Graphs

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 367, 42nd International Symposium on Computational Geometry (SoCG 2026)

Abstract
Let S be a set of n points in a polygon P with m vertices. The geodesic unit-disk graph G(S) induced by S has vertex set S and contains an edge between two vertices whenever their geodesic distance in P is at most one. In the weighted version, each edge is assigned weight equal to the geodesic distance between its endpoints; in the unweighted version, every edge has weight 1. Given a source point s ∈ S, we study the problem of computing shortest paths from s to all vertices of G(S). To the best of our knowledge, this problem has not been investigated previously. A naive approach constructs G(S) explicitly and then applies a standard shortest path algorithm for general graphs, but this requires quadratic time in the worst case, since G(S) may contain Ω(n²) edges. In this paper, we give the first subquadratic-time algorithms for this problem. For the weighted case, when P is a simple polygon, we obtain an O(m + n log³ n log² m)-time algorithm. For the unweighted case, we provide an O(m + n log n log² m)-time algorithm for simple polygons, and an O(√n (n+m)log(n+m))-time algorithm for polygons with holes.

Computing the Girth of a Segment Intersection Graph

Authors: Timothy M. Chan and Yuancheng Yu

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 367, 42nd International Symposium on Computational Geometry (SoCG 2026)

Abstract
We present an algorithm that computes the girth of the intersection graph of n given line segments in the plane in O(n^1.483) expected time. This is the first such algorithm with O(n^{3/2-ε}) running time for a positive constant ε, and makes progress towards an open question posed by Chan (SODA 2023). The main techniques include (i) the usage of recent subcubic algorithms for bounded-difference min-plus matrix multiplication, and (ii) an interesting variant of the planar graph separator theorem. The result extends to intersection graphs of connected algebraic curves or semialgebraic sets of constant description complexity.

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 359, 36th International Symposium on Algorithms and Computation (ISAAC 2025)

Abstract
Let ℬ be a collection of n arbitrary balls in ℝ³, and let G₀(ℬ) be their intersection graph. We provide an algorithm for performing BFS on G₀(ℬ), which runs in O^*(n^{4/3}) time, where the O^*(⋅) notation hides subpolynomial factors. For r ≥ 0, let G_r(ℬ) be the intersection graph of the set ℬ_r = {B+r ∣ B ∈ ℬ}, where B+r is the ball concentric with B whose radius is larger by r than the radius of B. We provide an efficient algorithm for the reverse shortest path (RSP) problem, where we are given two designated balls B_s, B_t of ℬ and a parameter 0 < λ < n, and seek the smallest value r^* for which G_{r^*}(ℬ) contains a path from B_s to B_t of at most λ edges. For the special case of congruent balls (equivalently, for points in ℝ³), the algorithm runs in O^*(n^{29/21}) ≈ O^*(n^{1.381}) time. For the general case, the algorithm runs in O^*(n^{56/39}) ≈ O^*(n^{1.436}) time. We also extend the technique to handle other measures of expansion and higher dimensions.

Star-Based Separators for Intersection Graphs of c-Colored Pseudo-Segments

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 359, 36th International Symposium on Algorithms and Computation (ISAAC 2025)

Abstract
The Planar Separator Theorem, which states that any planar graph 𝒢 has a separator consisting of O(√n) nodes whose removal partitions 𝒢 into components of size at most 2n/3, is a widely used tool to obtain fast algorithms on planar graphs. Intersection graphs of disks, which generalize planar graphs, do not admit such separators. It has recently been shown that disk graphs do admit so-called clique-based separators that consist of O(√n) cliques. This result has been generalized to intersection graphs of various other types of disk-like objects. Unfortunately, segment intersection graphs do not admit small clique-based separators, because they can contain arbitrarily large bicliques. This is true even in the simple case of axis-aligned segments. In this paper we therefore introduce biclique-based separators (and, in particular, star-based separators), which are separators consisting of a small number of bicliques (or stars). We prove that any c-oriented set of n segments in the plane, where c is a constant, admits a star-based separator consisting of O(√n) stars. In fact, our result is more general, as it applies to any set of n pseudo-segments that is partitioned into c subsets such that the pseudo-segments in the same subset are pairwise disjoint. We extend our result to intersection graphs of c-oriented polygons. These results immediately lead to an almost-exact distance oracle for such intersection graphs, which has O(n√n) storage and O(√n) query time, and that can report the hop-distance between any two query nodes in the intersection graph with an additive error of at most 2. This is the first distance oracle for such types of intersection graphs that has subquadratic storage and sublinear query time and that only has an additive error.

An Optimal Algorithm for Shortest Paths in Unweighted Disk Graphs

Authors: Bruce W. Brewer and Haitao Wang

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 351, 33rd Annual European Symposium on Algorithms (ESA 2025)

Abstract
Given in the plane a set S of n points and a set of disks centered at these points, the disk graph G(S) induced by these disks has vertex set S and an edge between two vertices if their disks intersect. Note that the disks may have different radii. We consider the problem of computing shortest paths from a source point s ∈ S to all vertices in G(S) where the length of a path in G(S) is defined as the number of edges in the path. The previously best algorithm solves the problem in O(nlog² n) time. A lower bound of Ω(nlog n) is also known for this problem under the algebraic decision tree model. In this paper, we present an O(nlog n) time algorithm, which matches the lower bound and thus is optimal. Another virtue of our algorithm is that it is quite simple.

Compact Representation of Semilinear and Terrain-Like Graphs

Authors: Jean Cardinal and Yelena Yuditsky

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 351, 33rd Annual European Symposium on Algorithms (ESA 2025)

Abstract
We consider the existence and construction of biclique covers of graphs, consisting of coverings of their edge sets by complete bipartite graphs. The size of such a cover is the sum of the sizes of the bicliques. Small-size biclique covers of graphs are ubiquitous in computational geometry, and have been shown to be useful compact representations of graphs. We give a brief survey of classical and recent results on biclique covers and their applications, and give new families of graphs having biclique covers of near-linear size. In particular, we show that semilinear graphs, whose edges are defined by linear relations in bounded dimensional space, always have biclique covers of size O(npolylog n). This generalizes many previously known results on special classes of graphs including interval graphs, permutation graphs, and graphs of bounded boxicity, but also new classes such as intersection graphs of L-shapes in the plane. It also directly implies the bounds for Zarankiewicz’s problem derived by Basit, Chernikov, Starchenko, Tao, and Tran (Forum Math. Sigma, 2021). We also consider capped graphs, also known as terrain-like graphs, defined as ordered graphs forbidding a certain ordered pattern on four vertices. Terrain-like graphs contain the induced subgraphs of terrain visibility graphs. We give an elementary proof that these graphs admit biclique partitions of size O(nlog³ n). This provides a simple combinatorial analogue of a classical result from Agarwal, Alon, Aronov, and Suri on polygon visibility graphs (Discrete Comput. Geom. 1994). Finally, we prove that there exists families of unit disk graphs on n vertices that do not admit biclique coverings of size o(n^{4/3}), showing that we are unlikely to improve on Szemerédi-Trotter type incidence bounds for higher-degree semialgebraic graphs.

Going Beyond Surfaces in Diameter Approximation

Authors: Michał Włodarczyk

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 351, 33rd Annual European Symposium on Algorithms (ESA 2025)

Abstract
Calculating the diameter of an undirected graph requires quadratic running time under the Strong Exponential Time Hypothesis and this barrier works even against any approximation better than 3/2. For planar graphs with positive edge weights, there are known (1+ε)-approximation algorithms with running time poly(1/ε, log n)⋅ n. However, these algorithms rely on shortest path separators and this technique falls short to yield efficient algorithms beyond graphs of bounded genus. In this work we depart from embedding-based arguments and obtain diameter approximations relying on VC set systems and the local treewidth property. We present two orthogonal extensions of the planar case by giving (1+ε)-approximation algorithms with the following running times: - 𝒪_h((1/ε)^𝒪(h) ⋅ nlog² n)-time algorithm for graphs excluding an apex graph of size h as a minor, - 𝒪_d((1/ε)^𝒪(d) ⋅ nlog² n)-time algorithm for the class of d-apex graphs. As a stepping stone, we obtain efficient (1+ε)-approximate distance oracles for graphs excluding an apex graph of size h as a minor. Our oracle has preprocessing time 𝒪_h((1/ε)⁸⋅ nlog nlog W) and query time 𝒪_h((1/ε)²⋅log n log W), where W is the metric stretch. Such oracles have been so far only known for bounded genus graphs. All our algorithms are deterministic.

Separating Two Points with Obstacles in the Plane: Improved Upper and Lower Bounds

Authors: Jack Spalding-Jamieson and Anurag Murty Naredla

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 351, 33rd Annual European Symposium on Algorithms (ESA 2025)

Abstract
Given two points in the plane, and a set of "obstacles" given as curves through the plane with assigned weights, we consider the point-separation problem, which asks for a minimum-weight subset of the obstacles separating the two points. A few computational models for this problem have been previously studied. We give a unified approach to this problem in all models via a reduction to a particular shortest-path problem, and obtain improved running times in essentially all cases. In addition, we also give fine-grained lower bounds for many cases.

Faster Construction of a Planar Distance Oracle with Õ(1) Query Time

Authors: Itai Boneh, Shay Golan, Shay Mozes, Daniel Prigan, and Oren Weimann

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 334, 52nd International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2025)

Abstract
We show how to preprocess a weighted undirected n-vertex planar graph in Õ(n^{4/3}) time, such that the distance between any pair of vertices can then be reported in Õ(1) time. This improves the previous Õ(n^{3/2}) preprocessing time [JACM'23]. Our main technical contribution is a near optimal construction of additively weighted Voronoi diagrams in undirected planar graphs. Namely, given a planar graph G and a face f, we show that one can preprocess G in Õ(n) time such that given any weight assignment to the vertices of f one can construct the additively weighted Voronoi diagram of f in near optimal Õ(|f|) time. This improves the Õ(√{n|f|}) construction time of [JACM'23].

Abstract
In this paper, we present efficient algorithms for the single-source shortest path problem in weighted disk graphs. A disk graph is the intersection graph of a family of disks in the plane. Here, the weight of an edge is defined as the Euclidean distance between the centers of the disks corresponding to the endpoints of the edge. Given a family of n disks in the plane whose radii lie in [1,Ψ] and a source disk, we can compute a shortest path tree from a source vertex in the weighted disk graph in O(nlog² n log Ψ) time. Moreover, in the case that the radii of disks are arbitrarily large, we can compute a shortest path tree from a source vertex in the weighted disk graph in O(nlog⁴ n) time. This improves the best-known algorithm running in O(nlog⁶ n) time presented in ESA'23.

Faster Algorithms for Reverse Shortest Path in Unit-Disk Graphs and Related Geometric Optimization Problems: Improving the Shrink-And-Bifurcate Technique

Abstract
In a series of papers, Avraham, Filtser, Kaplan, Katz, and Sharir (SoCG'14), Kaplan, Katz, Saban, and Sharir (ESA'23), and Katz, Saban, and Sharir (ESA'24) studied a class of geometric optimization problems - including reverse shortest path in unweighted and weighted unit-disk graphs, discrete Fréchet distance with one-sided shortcuts, and reverse shortest path in visibility graphs on 1.5-dimensional terrains - for which standard parametric search does not work well due to a lack of efficient parallel algorithms for the corresponding decision problems. The best currently known algorithms for all the above problems run in O^*(n^{6/5}) = O^*(n^{1.2}) time (ignoring subpolynomial factors), and they were obtained using a technique called shrink-and-bifurcate. We improve the running time to Õ(n^{8/7}) ≈ O(n^{1.143}) for these problems. Furthermore, specifically for reverse shortest path in unweighted unit-disk graphs, we improve the running time further to Õ(n^{9/8}) = Õ(n^{1.125}).

Dynamic Unit-Disk Range Reporting

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 327, 42nd International Symposium on Theoretical Aspects of Computer Science (STACS 2025)

Abstract
For a set P of n points in the plane and a value r > 0, the unit-disk range reporting problem is to construct a data structure so that given any query disk of radius r, all points of P in the disk can be reported efficiently. We consider the dynamic version of the problem where point insertions and deletions of P are allowed. The previous best method provides a data structure of O(n log n) space that supports O(log^{3+ε} n) amortized insertion time, O(log^{5+ε} n) amortized deletion time, and O(log² n/log log n+k) query time, where ε is an arbitrarily small positive constant and k is the output size. In this paper, we improve the query time to O(log n+k) while keeping other complexities the same as before. A key ingredient of our approach is a shallow cutting algorithm for circular arcs, which may be interesting in its own right. A related problem that can also be solved by our techniques is the dynamic unit-disk range emptiness queries: Given a query unit disk, we wish to determine whether the disk contains a point of P. The best previous work can maintain P in a data structure of O(n) space that supports O(log² n) amortized insertion time, O(log⁴n) amortized deletion time, and O(log² n) query time. Our new data structure also uses O(n) space but can support each update in O(log^{1+ε} n) amortized time and support each query in O(log n) time.

Approximate Shortest Paths and Distance Oracles in Weighted Unit-Disk Graphs

Authors: Timothy M. Chan and Dimitrios Skrepetos

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 99, 34th International Symposium on Computational Geometry (SoCG 2018)

Abstract
We present the first near-linear-time (1 + epsilon)-approximation algorithm for the diameter of a weighted unit-disk graph of n vertices, running in O(n log^2 n) time, for any constant epsilon>0, improving the near-O(n^{3/2})-time algorithm of Gao and Zhang [STOC 2003]. Using similar ideas, we can construct a (1+epsilon)-approximate distance oracle for weighted unit-disk graphs with O(1) query time, with a similar improvement in the preprocessing time, from near O(n^{3/2}) to O(n log^3 n). We also obtain new results for a number of other related problems in the weighted unit-disk graph metric, such as the radius and bichromatic closest pair. As a further application, we use our new distance oracle, along with additional ideas, to solve the (1 + epsilon)-approximate all-pairs bounded-leg shortest paths problem for a set of n planar points, with near O(n^{2.579}) preprocessing time, O(n^2 log n) space, and O(log{log n}) query time, improving thus the near-cubic preprocessing bound by Roditty and Segal [SODA 2007].

Faster Approximate Diameter and Distance Oracles in Planar Graphs

Authors: Timothy M. Chan and Dimitrios Skrepetos

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 87, 25th Annual European Symposium on Algorithms (ESA 2017)

Abstract
We present an algorithm that computes a (1+varepsilon)-approximation of the diameter of a weighted, undirected planar graph of n vertices with non-negative edge lengths in O(nlog n(log n + (1/varepsilon)^5)) expected time, improving upon the O(n((1/varepsilon)^4 log^4(n) + 2^{O(1/varepsilon)}))-time algorithm of Weimann and Yuster [ICALP 2013]. Our algorithm makes two improvements over that result: first and foremost, it replaces the exponential dependency on 1/varepsilon with a polynomial one, by adapting and specializing Cabello's recent abstract-Voronoi-diagram-based technique [SODA 2017] for approximation purposes; second, it shaves off two logarithmic factors by choosing a better sequence of error parameters during recursion. Moreover, using similar techniques, we improve the (1+varepsilon)-approximate distance oracle of Gu and Xu [ISAAC 2015] by first replacing the exponential dependency on 1/varepsilon on the preprocessing time and space with a polynomial one and second removing a logarithmic factor from the preprocessing time.
