Euclidean Noncrossing Steiner Spanners of Nearly Optimal Sparsity

Abstract
A Euclidean noncrossing Steiner (1+ε)-spanner for a point set P ⊂ ℝ² is a planar straight-line graph that, for any two points a, b ∈ P, contains a path whose length is at most 1+ε times the Euclidean distance between a and b. We construct a Euclidean noncrossing Steiner (1+ε)-spanner with O(n/ε^{3/2}) edges for any set of n points in the plane. This result improves upon the previous best upper bound of O(n/ε⁴) obtained nearly three decades ago. We also establish an almost matching lower bound: There exist n points in the plane for which any Euclidean noncrossing Steiner (1+ε)-spanner has Ω_μ(n/ε^{3/2-μ}) edges for any μ > 0. Our lower bound uses recent generalizations of the Szemerédi-Trotter theorem to disk-tube incidences in geometric measure theory.

Approximating Euclidean Shallow-Light Trees

Abstract
For a weighted graph G = (V, E, w) and a designated source vertex s ∈ V, a spanning tree that simultaneously approximates a shortest-path tree w.r.t. source s and a minimum spanning tree is called a shallow-light tree (SLT). Specifically, an (α, β)-SLT of G w.r.t. s ∈ V is a spanning tree of G with root-stretch α (preserving all distances between s and all other vertices up to a factor of α) and lightness β (its weight is at most β times the weight of a minimum spanning tree of G). It was shown in the early 1990s that (1) for any graph, any source, and any ε > 0, there is a (1 + ε, O(1/ε))-SLT, and (2) there exist graphs for which β = Ω(1/ε) for any (1+ε,β)-SLT. The focus of this work is on SLTs in low-dimensional Euclidean spaces, which are of special interest for some applications of SLTs, in geometric network optimization problems. The aforementioned existential lower bound applies to Euclidean plane, as well. It was shown more than a decade ago that (1) by using Steiner points, one can reduce the lightness bound from O(1/ε) to O(√{1/ε}), and (2) there exist point sets in the plane for which β = Ω(√{1/ε}) for any Steiner (1+ε,β)-SLT. These tight existential bounds for the Euclidean case yield approximation factors of O(1/ε) and O(√{1/ε}) on the minimum weight of any non-Steiner and Steiner tree with root-stretch 1+ε, respectively. Despite the large body of work on SLTs, the basic question of whether a better approximation algorithm exists was left untouched to date, and this holds in any graph family. This paper makes a first nontrivial step towards resolving this question by presenting two bicriteria approximation algorithms. For any ε > 0, a set P of n points in constant-dimensional Euclidean space and a source s ∈ P, our first (respectively, second) algorithm returns, in O(n log n ⋅ polylog(ε^{-1})) time, a non-Steiner (resp., Steiner) tree with root-stretch 1+O(ε log ε^{-1}) and weight at most O(opt_ε ⋅ log² ε^{-1}) (resp., O(opt_ε ⋅ log ε^{-1})), where opt_ε denotes the minimum weight of a non-Steiner (resp., Steiner) tree with root-stretch 1+ε.

General Computation Using Slidable Tiles with Deterministic Global Forces

Abstract
We study the computational power of the Full-Tilt model of motion planning, where slidable polyominos are moved maximally around a board by way of a sequence of directional "tilts." We focus on the deterministic scenario in which the tilts constitute a repeated clockwise rotation. We show that general-purpose computation is possible within this framework by providing a direct and efficient simulation of space-bounded Turing machines in which one computational step of the machine is simulated per O(1) rotations. We further show that the initial tape of the machine can be programmed by an initial tilt-sequence preceding the rotations. This result immediately implies new PSPACE-completeness results for the well-studied problems of occupancy (deciding if a given board location can be occupied by a tile), vacancy (deciding if a location can be emptied), relocation (deciding if a tile can be moved from one location to another), and reconfiguration (can a given board configuration be reconfigured into a second given configuration) that hold even for deterministically repeating tilt cycles such as rotations. All of our PSPACE-completeness results hold even when there is only a single domino in the system beyond singleton tiles. Following, we show that these results work in the Single-Step tilt model for larger constant cycles. We then investigate computational efficiency by showing a modification to implement a two-tape Turing machine in the Full-Tilt model and Systolic Arrays in the Single-Step model. Finally, we show a cyclic implementation for tilt-efficient Threshold Circuits.

Delaunay Triangulations with Predictions

Abstract
We investigate algorithms with predictions in computational geometry, specifically focusing on the basic problem of computing 2D Delaunay triangulations. Given a set P of n points in the plane and a triangulation G that serves as a "prediction" of the Delaunay triangulation, we would like to use G to compute the correct Delaunay triangulation DT(P) more quickly when G is "close" to DT(P). We obtain a variety of results of this type, under different deterministic and probabilistic settings, including the following: 1) Define D to be the number of edges in G that are not in DT(P). We present a deterministic algorithm to compute DT(P) from G in O(n + Dlog³ n) time, and a randomized algorithm in O(n+Dlog n) expected time, the latter of which is optimal in terms of D. 2) Let R be a random subset of the edges of DT(P), where each edge is chosen independently with probability ρ. Suppose G is any triangulation of P that contains R. We present an algorithm to compute DT(P) from G in O(nlog log n + nlog(1/ρ)) time with high probability. 3) Define d_{vio} to be the maximum number of points of P strictly inside the circumcircle of a triangle in G (the number is 0 if G is equal to DT(P)). We present a deterministic algorithm to compute DT(P) from G in O(nlog^*n + nlog d_{vio}) time. We also obtain results in similar settings for related problems such as 2D Euclidean minimum spanning trees, and hope that our work will open up a fruitful line of future research.

Smoothed Analysis of Online Metric Matching with a Single Sample: Beyond Metric Distortion

Abstract
In the online metric matching problem, n servers and n requests lie in a metric space. Servers are available upfront, and requests arrive sequentially. An arriving request must be matched immediately and irrevocably to an available server, incurring a cost equal to their distance. The goal is to minimize the total matching cost. We study this problem in [0, 1]^d with the Euclidean metric, when servers are adversarial and requests are independently drawn from distinct distributions that satisfy a mild smoothness condition. Our main result is an O(1)-competitive algorithm for d ≠ 2 that requires no distributional knowledge, relying only on a single sample from each request distribution. To our knowledge, this is the first algorithm to achieve an o(log n) competitive ratio for non-trivial metrics beyond the i.i.d. setting. Our approach bypasses the Ω(log n) barrier introduced by probabilistic metric embeddings: instead of analyzing the embedding distortion and the algorithm separately, we directly bound the cost of the algorithm on the target metric space of a simple deterministic embedding. We then combine this analysis with lower bounds on the offline optimum for Euclidean metrics, derived via majorization arguments, to obtain our guarantees.

Metric Sketching and Dynamic Algorithms for Geometric and Topological Graphs (Dagstuhl Seminar 25212)

Abstract
Sketching is a basic technique to handle big data: Compress a big input dataset into a small dataset, called a sketch, that (approximately) preserves the important information in the input dataset. A metric space is often given as a distance matrix with Ω(n²) entries, and metric sketching techniques aim to reduce the space to linear. One goal of this Dagstuhl Seminar was to understand different sketching techniques and metric spaces that admit small sketches. Another common approach to handling big datasets is dynamic algorithms. Typically, large datasets do not arrive in a single batch; instead, they are updated over time in small increments. The objective of dynamic algorithms is to respond to data updates quickly, ideally with an update time that is polylogarithmic in the size of the whole dataset. In this Dagstuhl Seminar "Metric Sketching and Dynamic Algorithms for Geometric and Topological Graphs" (25212), we considered sketching and dynamic algorithms in the context of geometric intersection graphs and topological graphs. Geometric intersection graphs have been used to model many real-world massive graphs, such as wireless networks. Topological graphs, including planar graphs, have been used in applications such as geographic information systems and motion planning. While geometric intersection graphs and topological graphs are seemingly different, they have common structural properties that allow the transfer of algorithmic techniques between the two domains, which was the motivation of this seminar: Uncovering deeper connections between metric sketching, dynamic algorithms, geometric intersection graphs, and topological graphs. More concretely, we studied: (1) the construction of sketching structures, such as spanners, tree covers, distance oracles, and emulators with optimal parameters for various metrics and graphs, including geometric and topological graphs; (2) dynamic problems in geometric intersections graphs, including connectivity, spanners, shortest paths; and (3) dynamic maintenance of metric sketching structures in topological graphs.

Realizing Metric Spaces with Convex Obstacles

Abstract
The presence of obstacles has a significant impact on distance computation, motion-planning, and visibility. These problems have been studied extensively in the planar setting, while our understanding of these problems in 3- and higher-dimensional spaces is still rudimentary. In this paper, we study the impact of different types of obstacles on the induced geodesic metric in 3-dimensional Euclidean space. We say that a finite metric space (X, dist_X) is approximately realizable by a collection 𝒯 of obstacles in ℝ³ if for any ε > 0 it can be embedded into (ℝ³⧵⋃_{T∈𝒯} T, dist_𝒯) with worst-case multiplicative distortion 1+ε, where dist_𝒯 denotes the geodesic distance in the free space induced by 𝒯. We focus on three key geometric properties of obstacles -convexity, disjointness, and fatness- and examine how dropping each one of them affects the existence of such embeddings. Our main result concerns dropping the fatness property: we demonstrate that any finite metric space is realizable with 1+ε worst-case multiplicative distortion using a collection of convex and pairwise disjoint obstacles in ℝ³, even if the obstacles are congruent and equilateral triangles. Based on the same construction, we can also show that if we require fatness but drop any of the other two properties instead, then we can still approximately realize any finite metric space. Our results have important implications on the approximability of tsp with obstacles, a natural variant of tsp introduced recently by Alkema et al. (ESA 2022). Specifically, we use the recent results of Banerjee et al. on tsp in doubling spaces (FOCS 2024) and of Chew et al. on distances among obstacles (Inf. Process. Lett. 2002) to show that tsp with obstacles admits a PTAS if the obstacles are convex, fat, and pairwise disjoint. If any of these three properties is dropped, then our results, combined with the APX-hardness of Metric tsp, demonstrate that tsp with obstacles is APX-hard.

Structural Parameterizations of Simultaneous Planarity

Abstract
Given a set of graphs on the same vertex set, the problem Simultaneous Embedding With Fixed Edges (SEFE) asks, whether there exist planar drawings of all input graphs, such that every pair of drawings coincides on their shared subgraph. It is known that SEFE is NP-complete [Elisabeth Gassner et al., 2006], even in the so-called sunflower case, where all pairs of input graphs have the same shared graph G_∩ [Marcus Schaefer, 2012]. Fink, Pfretzschner, and Rutter [Simon D. Fink et al., 2023] recently initiated the study of the parameterized complexity of SEFE in the sunflower case, mainly focusing on structural parameters of G_∩. In this work, we shift the focus towards parameters of the union graph G_∪ that contains the edges of all input graphs. On the positive side, we establish fixed-parameter tractability for the problem with respect to the feedback edge set number of G_∪. We complement this result by showing that it, surprisingly, remains NP-complete even if G_∪ has constant vertex cover number. These results settle two open questions posed by Fink et al. [Simon D. Fink et al., 2023].

The Price of Connectivity Augmentation on Planar Graphs

Abstract
Given two classes of graphs, 𝒢₁ ⊆ 𝒢₂, and a c-connected graph G ∈ 𝒢₁, we wish to augment G with a smallest cardinality set of new edges F to obtain a k-connected graph G' = (V,E∪ F) ∈ 𝒢₂. In general, this is the c → k connectivity augmentation problem. Previous research considered variants where 𝒢₁ = 𝒢₂ is the class of planar graphs, plane graphs, or planar straight-line graphs. In all three settings, we prove that the c → k augmentation problem is NP-complete when 2 ≤ c < k ≤ 5. However, the connectivity of the augmented graph G' is at most 5 if 𝒢₂ is limited to planar graphs. We initiate the study of the c → k connectivity augmentation problem for arbitrary k ∈ ℕ, where 𝒢₁ is the class of planar graphs, plane graphs, or planar straight-line graphs, and 𝒢₂ is a beyond-planar class of graphs: 𝓁-planar, 𝓁-plane topological, or 𝓁-plane geometric graphs. We obtain tight bounds on the tradeoffs between the desired connectivity k and the local crossing number 𝓁 of the augmented graph G'. We also show that our hardness results apply to this setting. The connectivity augmentation problem for triangulations is intimately related to edge flips; and the minimum augmentation problem to the flip distance between triangulations. We prove that it is NP-complete to find the minimum flip distance between a given triangulation and a 4-connected triangulation, settling an open problem posed in 2014, and present an EPTAS for this problem.

Geometry Matters in Planar Storyplans

Abstract
A storyplan visualizes a graph G = (V,E) as a sequence of 𝓁 frames Γ₁, … , Γ_𝓁, each of which is a drawing of the induced subgraph G[V_i] of a vertex subset V_i ⊆ V. Moreover, each vertex v ∈ V is contained in a single consecutive sequence of frames Γ_i, … , Γ_j, all vertices and edges contained in consecutive frames are drawn identically, and the union of all frames is a drawing of G. In GD 2022, the concept of planar storyplans was introduced, in which each frame must be a planar (topological) drawing. Several (parameterized) complexity results for recognizing graphs that admit a planar storyplan were provided, including NP-hardness. In this paper, we investigate an open question posed in the GD paper and show that the geometric and topological settings of the planar storyplan problem differ: We provide an instance of a graph that admits a planar storyplan, but no planar geometric storyplan, in which each frame is a planar straight-line drawing. Still, by adapting the reduction proof from the topological to the geometric setting, we show that recognizing the graphs that admit planar geometric storyplans remains NP-hard.

Structural Parameterizations of k-Planarity

Abstract
The concept of k-planarity is extensively studied in the context of Beyond Planarity. A graph is k-planar if it admits a drawing in the plane in which each edge is crossed at most k times. The local crossing number of a graph is the minimum integer k such that it is k-planar. The problem of determining whether an input graph is 1-planar is known to be NP-complete even for near-planar graphs [Cabello and Mohar, SIAM J. Comput. 2013], that is, the graphs obtained from planar graphs by adding a single edge. Moreover, the local crossing number is hard to approximate within a factor 2 - ε for any ε > 0 [Urschel and Wellens, IPL 2021]. To address this computational intractability, Bannister, Cabello, and Eppstein [JGAA 2018] investigated the parameterized complexity of the case of k = 1, particularly focusing on structural parameterizations on input graphs, such as treedepth, vertex cover number, and feedback edge number. In this paper, we extend their approach by considering the general case k ≥ 1 and give (tight) parameterized upper and lower bound results. In particular, we strengthen the aforementioned lower bound results to subclasses of constant-treewidth graphs: we show that testing 1-planarity is NP-complete even for near-planar graphs with feedback vertex set number at most 3 and pathwidth at most 4, and the local crossing number is hard to approximate within any constant factor for graphs with feedback vertex set number at most 2.

Constrained Flips in Plane Spanning Trees

Abstract
A flip in a plane spanning tree T is the operation of removing one edge from T and adding another edge such that the resulting structure is again a plane spanning tree. For trees on a set of points in convex position we study two classic types of constrained flips: (1) Compatible flips are flips in which the removed and inserted edge do not cross each other. We relevantly improve the previous upper bound of 2n-O(√n) on the diameter of the compatible flip graph to (5n/3)-O(1), by this matching the upper bound for unrestricted flips by Bjerkevik, Kleist, Ueckerdt, and Vogtenhuber [SODA 2025] up to an additive constant of 1. We further show that no shortest compatible flip sequence removes an edge that is already in its target position. Using this so-called happy edge property, we derive a fixed-parameter tractable algorithm to compute the shortest compatible flip sequence between two given trees. (2) Rotations are flips in which the removed and inserted edge share a common vertex. Besides showing that the happy edge property does not hold for rotations, we improve the previous upper bound of 2n-O(1) for the diameter of the rotation graph to (7n/4)-O(1).

Abstract
Let S be a point set in the plane, and let 𝒫(S) and 𝒞(S) be the sets of all plane spanning paths and caterpillars on S. We study reconfiguration operations on 𝒫(S) and 𝒞(S). In particular, we prove that all of the commonly studied reconfigurations on plane spanning trees still yield connected reconfiguration graphs for caterpillars when S is in convex position. If S is in general position, we show that the rotation, compatible flip and flip graphs of 𝒞(S) are connected while the slide graph is sometimes disconnected, but always has a component of size 1/4(3ⁿ-1). We then study sizes of connected components in reconfiguration graphs of plane spanning paths. In this direction, we show that no component of size at most 7 can exist in the flip graph on 𝒫(S).

Edge Densities of Drawings of Graphs with One Forbidden Cell

Abstract
A connected topological drawing of a graph divides the plane into a number of cells. The type of a cell c is the cyclic sequence of crossings and vertices along the boundary walk of c. For example, all triangular cells with three incident crossings and no incident vertex share the same cell type. When a non-homotopic drawing of an n-vertex multigraph G does not contain any such cells, Ackerman and Tardos [JCTA 2007] proved that G has at most 8n-20 edges, while Kaufmann, Klemz, Knorr, Reddy, Schröder, and Ueckerdt [GD 2024] showed that this bound is tight. In this paper, we initiate the in-depth study of non-homotopic drawings that do not contain one fixed cell type 𝔠, and investigate the edge density of the corresponding multigraphs, i.e., the maximum possible number of edges. We consider non-homotopic as well as simple drawings, multigraphs as well as simple graphs, and every possible type of cell. For every combination of drawing style, graph type, and cell type, we give upper and lower bounds on the corresponding edge density. With the exception of the cell type with four incident crossings and no incident vertex, we show for every cell type 𝔠 that the edge density of n-vertex (multi)graphs with 𝔠-free drawings is either quadratic in n or linear in n. In most cases, our bounds are tight up to an additive constant. Additionally, we improve the current lower bound on the edge density of simple graphs that admit a non-homotopic quasiplanar drawing from 7n-28 to 7.5n-28.
