Computing Equilibrium Points of Electrostatic Potentials

Abstract
We study the computation of equilibrium points of electrostatic potentials: locations in space where the electrostatic force arising from a collection of charged particles vanishes. This is a novel scenario of optimization in which solutions are guaranteed to exist due to a nonconstructive argument, but gradient descent is unreliable due to the presence of singularities. We present an algorithm based on piecewise approximation of the potential function by Taylor series. The main insight is to divide the domain into a grid with variable coarseness, where grid cells are exponentially smaller in regions where the function changes rapidly compared to regions where it changes slowly. Our algorithm finds approximate equilibrium points in time poly-logarithmic in the approximation parameter, but these points are not guaranteed to be close to exact solutions. Nevertheless, we show that such points can be computed efficiently under a mild assumption that we call "strong non-degeneracy". We complement these algorithmic results by studying a generalization of this problem and showing that it is CLS-hard and in PPAD, leaving its precise classification as an intriguing open problem.

Morpheus Consensus: Excelling on Trails and Autobahns

Abstract
Recent research in consensus has often focussed on protocols for State-Machine-Replication (SMR) that can handle high throughputs. Such state-of-the-art protocols (generally DAG-based) induce undue overhead when the needed throughput is low, or else exhibit unnecessarily-poor latency and communication complexity during periods of low throughput. Here we present Morpheus Consensus, which naturally morphs from a quiescent low-throughput leaderless blockchain protocol to a high-throughput leader-based DAG protocol and back, excelling in latency and complexity in both settings. During high-throughout, Morpheus pars with state-of-the-art DAG-based protocols, including Autobahn [Giridharan et al., 2024]. During low-throughput, Morpheus exhibits competitive complexity and lower latency than standard protocols such as PBFT [Castro et al., 1999] and Tendermint [Buchman, 2016; Buchman et al., 2018], which in turn do not perform well during high-throughput. The key idea of Morpheus is that as long as blocks do not conflict (due to Byzantine behaviour, network delays, or high-throughput simultaneous production) it produces a forkless blockchain, promptly finalizing each block upon arrival. It assigns a leader only if one is needed to resolve conflicts, in a manner and with performance not unlike Autobahn.

Mining Inter-Document Argument Structures in Scientific Papers for an Argument Web

Abstract
In Argument Mining, predicting argumentative relations between texts (or spans) remains one of the most challenging aspects, even more so in the cross-document setting. This paper makes three key contributions to advance research in this domain. We first extend an existing dataset, the Sci-Arg corpus, by annotating it with explicit inter-document argumentative relations, thereby allowing arguments to be distributed over several documents forming an Argument Web; these new annotations are published using Semantic Web technologies (RDF, OWL). Second, we explore and evaluate three automated approaches for predicting these inter-document argumentative relations, establishing critical baselines on the new dataset. We find that a simple classifier based on discourse indicators with access to context outperforms neural methods. Third, we conduct a comparative analysis of these approaches for both intra- and inter-document settings, identifying statistically significant differences in results that indicate the necessity of distinguishing between these two scenarios. Our findings highlight significant challenges in this complex domain and open crucial avenues for future research on the Argument Web of Science, particularly for those interested in leveraging Semantic Web technologies and knowledge graphs to understand scholarly discourse. With this, we provide the first stepping stones in the form of a benchmark dataset, three baseline methods, and an initial analysis for a systematic exploration of this field relevant to the Web of Data and Science.

NNP-NET: Accelerating t-SNE Graph Drawing for Very Large Graphs by Neural Networks

Abstract
tsNET is a recent graph drawing (GD) method that creates high quality layouts but suffers from a very high runtime. We present a new GD method, NNP-NET, which reduces tsNET’s time complexity to generate layouts for very large graphs in seconds. Additionally, we extend tsNET to support drawing graphs with edge weights. We accomplish this by replacing tsNET’s t-SNE projection with Neural Network Projection (NNP), a fast dimensionality reduction (DR) method that can imitate any given DR method. Our experiments show that NNP-NET gets good quality results when compared to other state-of-the art GD methods while yielding a better computational scalability.

Resilience in Knowledge Graph Embeddings

Abstract
In recent years, knowledge graphs have gained interest and witnessed widespread applications in various domains, such as information retrieval, question-answering, recommendation systems, amongst others. Large-scale knowledge graphs to this end have demonstrated their utility in effectively representing structured knowledge. To further facilitate the application of machine learning techniques, knowledge graph embedding models have been developed. Such models can transform entities and relationships within knowledge graphs into vectors. However, these embedding models often face challenges related to noise, missing information, distribution shift, adversarial attacks, etc. This can lead to sub-optimal embeddings and incorrect inferences, thereby negatively impacting downstream applications. While the existing literature has focused so far on adversarial attacks on KGE models, the challenges related to the other critical aspects remain unexplored. In this paper, we, first of all, give a unified definition of resilience, encompassing several factors such as generalisation, in-distribution generalization, distribution adaption, and robustness. After formalizing these concepts for machine learning in general, we define them in the context of knowledge graphs. To find the gap in the existing works on resilience in the context of knowledge graphs, we perform a systematic survey, taking into account all these aspects mentioned previously. Our survey results show that most of the existing works focus on a specific aspect of resilience, namely robustness. After categorizing such works based on their respective aspects of resilience, we discuss the challenges and future research directions.

QualiNet: Acquiring Bird’s Eye View Qualitative Spatial Representation from 2D Images in Automated Vehicle Perception (Short Paper)

Abstract
We present QualiNet, an end-to-end deep learning framework that acquires Bird’s Eye View (BEV) qualitative spatial relations directly from 2D images, eliminating the need for depth sensors. The system combines 2D object detection, masking, and classification to infer Rectangle Algebra (RA) and Qualitative Distance Calculus (QDC) relations. Evaluated on NuScenes and PandaSet datasets, QualiNet achieves 91% accuracy for RA, 80% for QDC, and 99% top-2 accuracy, demonstrating robust performance for automated vehicle perception.

Temporal Considerations in DJ Mix Information Retrieval and Generation (Short Paper)

Abstract
Music is the art of arranging sounds in time so as to produce a continuous, unified, and evocative composition. Electronic dance music (EDM) is a collection of musical sub-genres produced using computers and electronic instruments and often presented through the medium of DJing, where tracks are curated and mixed sequentially into a continuous stream of music to offer unique listening and dancing experiences over time periods ranging from several minutes to several hours. A DJ’s actions and decisions occur at several levels of temporal granularity, from real-time audio manipulation (e.g. of tempo) for smooth inter-track transitions to long-term planning of track selection and sequencing for mix content and flow. While human DJs can instinctively operate across these different temporal resolutions, replicating this capability in an end-to-end automated DJing system presents significant challenges. In this paper, we analyse existing works in DJ mix information retrieval and generation from this temporal perspective. We first explain the close link between DJing and the temporal notion of musical rhythm, then describe a framework for categorising DJing actions by temporal granularity. Using this framework, we summarise and contrast potential approaches for automating and augmenting sequential DJ decision making, and discuss the unique characteristics of DJ mix track selection as a sequential recommendation task. In doing so, we hope to facilitate the implementation of more robust and complete automated DJing systems in future research.

Blockchain Governance via Sharp Anonymous Multisignatures

Abstract
Electronic voting has occupied a large part of the cryptographic protocols literature. The recent reality of blockchains - in particular, their need for online governance mechanisms - has brought new parameters and requirements to the problem. We identify the key requirements of a blockchain governance mechanism, namely correctness (including eliminative double votes), voter anonymity, and traceability, and investigate mechanisms that can achieve them with minimal interaction and under assumptions that fit the blockchain setting. First, we define a signature-like primitive, which we term sharp anonymous multisignatures (in short, ♯AMS) that tightly meets the needs of blockchain governance. In a nutshell, ♯AMSs allow any set of parties to generate a signature, e.g., on a proposal to be voted upon, which, if posted on the blockchain, hides the identities of the signers/voters but reveals their number. This can be seen as a (strict) generalization of threshold ring signatures (TRS). We next turn to constructing such ♯AMSs and using them in various governance scenarios - e.g., single vote vs. multiple votes per voter. In this direction, although the definition of TRS does not imply ♯AMS, one can compile some existing TRS constructions into ♯AMS. This raises the question: What is the TRS structure that allows such a compilation? To answer the above, we devise templates for TRSs. Our templates encapsulate and abstract the structure that allows for the above compilation - most of the TRS schemes that can be compiled into ♯AMS are, in fact, instantiations of our template. This abstraction makes our template generic for instantiating TRSs and ♯AMSs from different cryptographic assumptions (e.g., DDH, LWE, etc.). One of our templates is based on chameleon hashes, and we explore a framework of lossy chameleon hashes to understand their nature fully. Finally, we turn to how ♯AMS schemes can be used in our applications. We provide fast (in some cases non-interactive) ♯AMS-based blockchain governance mechanisms for a wide spectrum of assumptions on the honesty (semi-honest vs malicious) and availability of voters and proposers.

From Permissioned to Proof-of-Stake Consensus

Abstract
This paper presents the first generic compiler that transforms any permissioned consensus protocol into a proof-of-stake permissionless consensus protocol. For each of the following properties, if the initial permissioned protocol satisfies that property in the partially synchronous setting, the consequent proof-of-stake protocol also satisfies that property in the partially synchronous and quasi-permissionless setting (with the same fault-tolerance): consistency; liveness; optimistic responsiveness; every composable log-specific property; and message complexity of a given order. Moreover, our transformation ensures that the output protocol satisfies accountability (identifying culprits in the event of a consistency violation), whether or not the original permissioned protocol satisfied it.

Toward an Earth-Independent System for EVA Mission Planning: Integrating Physical Models, Domain Knowledge, and Agentic RAG to Provide Explainable LLM-Based Decision Support

Abstract
We propose a unified framework for an Earth‑independent AI system that provides explainable, context‑aware decision support for EVA mission planning by integrating six core components: a fine‑tuned EVA domain LLM, a retrieval‑augmented knowledge base, a short-term memory store, physical simulation models, an agentic orchestration layer, and a multimodal user interface. To ground our design, we analyze the current roles and substitution potential of the Mission Control Center - identifying which procedural and analytical functions can be automated onboard while preserving human oversight for experiential and strategic tasks. Building on this framework, we introduce RASAGE (Retrieval & Simulation Augmented Guidance Agent for Exploration), a proof‑of‑concept toolset that combines Microsoft Phi‑4‑mini‑instruct with a FAISS (Facebook AI Similarity Search)‑powered EVA knowledge base and custom A* path planning and hypogravity metabolic models to generate grounded, traceable EVA plans. We outline a staged validation strategy to evaluate improvements in route efficiency, metabolic prediction accuracy, anomaly response effectiveness, and crew trust under realistic communication delays. Our findings demonstrate the feasibility of replicating key Mission Control functions onboard, enhancing crew autonomy, reducing cognitive load, and improving safety for deep‑space exploration missions.

Gaze Beyond Limits: Integrating Eye-Tracking and Augmented Reality for Next-Generation Spacesuit Interaction

Abstract
Extravehicular activities (EVAs) are increasingly frequent in human spaceflight, particularly in spacecraft maintenance, scientific research, and planetary exploration. Spacesuits are essential for sustaining astronauts in the harsh environment of space, making their design a key factor in the success of EVA missions. The development of spacesuit technology has traditionally been driven by highly engineered solutions focused on life support, mission adaptability and operational efficiency. Modern spacesuits prioritize maintaining optimal internal temperature, humidity and pressure, as well as withstanding extreme temperature fluctuations and providing robust protection against micrometeoroid impacts and space debris. However, their bulkiness and rigidity impose significant physical strain on astronauts, reducing mobility and dexterity, particularly in tasks requiring fine motor control. The restricted field of view further complicates situational awareness, increasing the cognitive load during high-precision operations. While traditional spacesuits support basic EVA tasks, future space exploration shifting toward long-duration lunar and Martian surface missions demand more adaptive, intelligent, and astronaut-centric designs to overcome current constraints. To explore a next-generation spacesuit, this paper proposed an in-process eye-tracking embedded Augmented Reality (AR) Spacesuit System to enhance astronaut-environment interactions. By leveraging Segment-Anything Models (SAM) and Vision-Language Models (VLMs), we demonstrate a four-step approach to enable top-down gaze detection to minimize erroneous fixation data, gaze-based segmentation of objects of interest, real-time contextual assistance via AR overlays and hands-free operation within the spacesuit. This approach enhances real-time situational awareness and improves EVA task efficiency. We conclude with an exploration of the AR Helmet System’s potential in revolutionizing human-space interaction paradigms for future long-duration deep-space missions and discuss the further optimization of eye-tracking interactions using VLMs to predict astronaut intent and highlight relevant objects preemptively.

Towards Passively Actuated Short-Range Telehaptics for Astronauts

Abstract
Human extra-vehicular activity (EVA) plays a vital role in current and near future space exploration for two reasons: the superior dexterity exhibited by human astronauts, and their flexible problem-solving and decision-making capabilities. However, the dexterity of astronauts during EVA is limited by the flexibility and tactility of their EVA suit gloves, which are primarily designed to provide thermal insulation and pressure for the hand. This creates a compromise between utility and protection. To address this compromise, a Passively Actuated Short-range Telehaptic (PAST) device is proposed. The PAST device couples the motion of fingers between a robotic hand and a human hand through a hydraulically actuated linkage. It also transfers tactile information, including pressure, direction of motion, and position of contact, via a taxel array. Results demonstrate that the proposed prototype PAST device surpasses an unpressurised benchmark heavy work glove (HWG) in tasks involving tactile position and motion direction identification. This provides evidence supporting the feasibility of enhancing astronaut dexterity during EVA through the use of PAST devices as an alternative paradigm to gloves.

Fuzzing as Editor Feedback

Abstract
Live programming requires concrete examples, but coming up with examples takes effort. However, there are ways to execute code without specifying examples, such as fuzzing. Fuzzing is a technique that synthesizes program inputs to find bugs in security-critical software. While fuzzing focuses on finding crashes, it also produces valid inputs as a byproduct. Our approach is to make use of this to show examples, including edge cases, directly in the editor. To provide examples for individual pieces of code, we implement fuzzing at the granularity of functions. We integrate it into the compiler pipeline and language tooling of Martinaise, a custom programming language with a limited feature set. Initially, our examples are random and then mutate based on coverage feedback to reach interesting code locations and become smaller. We evaluate our tool in small case studies, showing generated examples for numbers, strings, and composite objects. Our fuzzed examples still feel synthetic, but since they are grounded in the dynamic behavior of code, they can cover the entire execution and show edge cases.

Sublinear Space Graph Algorithms in the Continual Release Model

Abstract
The graph continual release model of differential privacy seeks to produce differentially private solutions to graph problems under a stream of edge updates where new private solutions are released after each update. Thus far, previously known edge-differentially private algorithms for most graph problems including densest subgraph and matchings in the continual release setting only output real-value estimates (not vertex subset solutions) and do not use sublinear space. Instead, they rely on computing exact graph statistics on the input [Hendrik Fichtenberger et al., 2021; Shuang Song et al., 2018]. In this paper, we leverage sparsification to address the above shortcomings for edge-insertion streams. Our edge-differentially private algorithms use sublinear space with respect to the number of edges in the graph while some also achieve sublinear space in the number of vertices in the graph. In addition, for the densest subgraph problem, we also output edge-differentially private vertex subset solutions; no previous graph algorithms in the continual release model output such subsets. We make novel use of assorted sparsification techniques from the non-private streaming and static graph algorithms literature to achieve new results in the sublinear space, continual release setting. This includes algorithms for densest subgraph, maximum matching, as well as the first continual release k-core decomposition algorithm. We also develop a novel sparse level data structure for k-core decomposition that may be of independent interest. To complement our insertion-only algorithms, we conclude with polynomial additive error lower bounds for edge-privacy in the fully dynamic setting, where only logarithmic lower bounds were previously known.
