A General Framework for Low Soundness Homomorphism Testing

Authors: Tushant Mittal and Sourya Roy

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 362, 17th Innovations in Theoretical Computer Science Conference (ITCS 2026)

Abstract
We introduce a general framework to design and analyze algorithms for the problem of testing homomorphisms between finite groups in the low-soundness regime. In this regime, we give the first constant-query tests for various families of groups. These include tests for: (i) homomorphisms between arbitrary cyclic groups, (ii) homomorphisms between any finite group and ℤ_p, (iii) automorphisms of dihedral and symmetric groups, (iv) inner automorphisms of non-abelian finite simple groups and extraspecial groups, and (v) testing linear characters of GL_n(F_q), and finite-dimensional Lie algebras over F_q. We also recover the result of Kiwi [TCS'03] for testing homomorphisms between F_qⁿ and F_q. Prior to this work, such tests were only known for abelian groups with a constant maximal order (such as F_qⁿ). No tests were known for non-abelian groups. As an additional corollary, our framework gives combinatorial list decoding bounds for cyclic groups with list size dependence of O(ε^{-2}) (for agreement parameter ε). This improves upon the currently best-known bound of O(ε^{-105}) due to Dinur, Grigorescu, Kopparty, and Sudan [STOC'08], and Guo and Sudan [RANDOM'14].

Prior-Independent and Subgame Optimal Online Algorithms

Authors: Jason Hartline, Aleck Johnsen, and Anant Shah

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 362, 17th Innovations in Theoretical Computer Science Conference (ITCS 2026)

Abstract
This paper develops two game-theoretic notions of beyond worst-case analysis that give better than worst-case guarantees on natural inputs. We illustrate them through the finite-horizon ski-rental problem. First, we consider prior-independent design and analysis of online algorithms where, rather than choosing a worst-case input, the adversary chooses a worst-case independent and identical distribution over inputs. Prior-independent online algorithms are generally analytically intractable; instead we give a fully polynomial-time approximation scheme to compute them. Second, we consider the worst-case design of algorithms. We define "subgame optimality" which is stronger than worst-case optimality in that it requires the algorithm to take advantage of an adversary not playing a worst-case input. Algorithms that focus only on the worst case can be far from subgame optimal. Highlighting the potential improvement from these paradigms for the finite-horizon ski-rental problem, we empirically compare worst-case, subgame optimal, and prior-independent algorithms in the prior-independent framework. Finally, we analyze the structure of their decisions across input sequences: the prior-independent algorithm exhibits more extreme adaptations to observed data, in contrast with the more conservative behavior of worst-case and subgame optimal algorithms.

Abstract
We consider a subclass of AC⁰[2] circuits that simultaneously captures DNF∘Xor and depth-3 AC⁰ circuits. For this class we show a technique for proving lower bounds inspired by the top-down approach. We give lower bounds for the middle slice function, inner product function, and affine dispersers.

Improved Elastic Scheduling Algorithms for Implicit-Deadline Tasks

Authors: Marion Sudvarg, Christopher Gill, and Sanjoy Baruah

Published in: LITES, Volume 10, Issue 2 (2025): Special Issue on Industrial Real-Time Systems. Leibniz Transactions on Embedded Systems, Volume 10, Issue 2

Abstract
Elastic scheduling provides a framework under which the utilizations of recurrent tasks are reduced by increasing their periods in response to system overload. The original elastic scheduling model was proposed by Buttazzo et al. in 1998 for implicit-deadline tasks on a uniprocessor and decreases task utilizations to satisfy a schedulable utilization bound. In 2019, Orr and Baruah extended the framework to multiprocessor scheduling of implicit-deadline tasks. In this paper, we propose, analyze, and evaluate new elastic scheduling algorithms for several of the scheduling policies considered in these prior works. In particular, (i) we evaluate an algorithm that we proposed as a short note in the Real-Time Systems journal and demonstrate that it allows for faster admission control than the algorithm of Buttazzo et al. when applied to uniprocessor and fluid scheduling. (ii) We also present faster elastic scheduling algorithms for partitioned EDF scheduling. Finally, (iii) we provide polynomial-time exact elastic scheduling algorithms for global EDF and global RM.

Mining Inter-Document Argument Structures in Scientific Papers for an Argument Web

Authors: Florian Ruosch, Cristina Sarasua, and Abraham Bernstein

Published in: TGDK, Volume 3, Issue 3 (2025). Transactions on Graph Data and Knowledge, Volume 3, Issue 3

Abstract
In Argument Mining, predicting argumentative relations between texts (or spans) remains one of the most challenging aspects, even more so in the cross-document setting. This paper makes three key contributions to advance research in this domain. We first extend an existing dataset, the Sci-Arg corpus, by annotating it with explicit inter-document argumentative relations, thereby allowing arguments to be distributed over several documents forming an Argument Web; these new annotations are published using Semantic Web technologies (RDF, OWL). Second, we explore and evaluate three automated approaches for predicting these inter-document argumentative relations, establishing critical baselines on the new dataset. We find that a simple classifier based on discourse indicators with access to context outperforms neural methods. Third, we conduct a comparative analysis of these approaches for both intra- and inter-document settings, identifying statistically significant differences in results that indicate the necessity of distinguishing between these two scenarios. Our findings highlight significant challenges in this complex domain and open crucial avenues for future research on the Argument Web of Science, particularly for those interested in leveraging Semantic Web technologies and knowledge graphs to understand scholarly discourse. With this, we provide the first stepping stones in the form of a benchmark dataset, three baseline methods, and an initial analysis for a systematic exploration of this field relevant to the Web of Data and Science.

Cutoff for the Swendsen–Wang Dynamics on the Complete Graph

Authors: Antonio Blanca and Zhezheng Song

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 360, 45th IARCS Annual Conference on Foundations of Software Technology and Theoretical Computer Science (FSTTCS 2025)

Abstract
We study the speed of convergence of the Swendsen-Wang (SW) dynamics for the q-state ferromagnetic Potts model on the n-vertex complete graph, known as the mean-field model. The SW dynamics was introduced as an attractive alternative to the local Glauber dynamics, often offering faster convergence rates to stationarity in a variety of settings. A series of works have characterized the asymptotic behavior of the speed of convergence of the mean-field SW dynamics for all q ≥ 2 and all values of the inverse temperature parameter β > 0. In particular, it is known that when β > q the mixing time of the SW dynamics is Θ(log n). We strengthen this result by showing that for all β > q, there exists a constant c(β,q) > 0 such that the mixing time of the SW dynamics is c(β,q) log n + Θ(1). This implies that the mean-field SW dynamics exhibits the cutoff phenomenon in this temperature regime, demonstrating that this Markov chain undergoes a sharp transition from "far from stationarity" to "well-mixed" within a narrow Θ(1) time window. The presence of cutoff is algorithmically significant, as simulating the chain for fewer steps than its mixing time could lead to highly biased samples.

Fine-Grained Complexity of Ontology Mediated Queries (Invited Paper)

Authors: Cristina Feier

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 138, Joint Proceedings of the 20th and 21st Reasoning Web Summer Schools (RW 2024 & RW 2025)

Abstract
This article surveys some approaches for establishing fine-grained complexity results for evaluation of ontology mediated queries (OMQs). It accompanies a related talk given at the Reasoning Web Summer School 2024. It zooms into some characterizations of efficiency in a parameterized complexity framework for OMQs based on various description logics and guarded tgds. As such results were established using results from query evaluation on databases, it also discusses the relevant results from the database world. After surveying some successive results on OMQs which all leverage database results in custom ways, it describes an approach which provides a general fpt reduction from query evaluation in the database world to query evaluation in the OMQ world. The reduction enables porting hardness results from the DB world to the OMQ world in a black-box fashion. Along these mentioned approaches, it also provides a brief survey of other approaches which are concerned with fine-grained complexity of OMQs and are based on rewriting techniques.

Modern Datalog: Concepts, Methods, Applications (Invited Paper)

Authors: Markus Krötzsch

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 138, Joint Proceedings of the 20th and 21st Reasoning Web Summer Schools (RW 2024 & RW 2025)

Abstract
Pure Datalog is arguably the most fundamental rule language, elegant and simple, but also often too limited to be useful in practice. This has motivated the introduction of many new expressive features, ranging from datatypes and related functions, over aggregates and semi-ring generalisations, to existential quantifiers and complex terms. In spite of their variety, all these approaches remain true to the nature of Datalog as a direct, pattern-based way of computing on structured data. We therefore find that a modern notion of Datalog is emerging, distinctly different from other approaches of logic programming and with its own set of related methods and applications. In this course, we introduce Datalog and its most common extensions, and explain when and how these features can be used together (which is often, but not always, safe to do). We further look at modern Datalog systems and some of their primary use cases. Hands-on work with Datalog and its extensions is done with the free Datalog engine https://knowsys.github.io/nemo-doc/. The course is accessible to all audiences and does not assume specific prior knowledge.

New Algorithmic Directions in Optimal Transport and Applications for Product Spaces

Authors: Salman Beigi, Omid Etesami, Mohammad Mahmoody, and Amir Najafi

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 359, 36th International Symposium on Algorithms and Computation (ISAAC 2025)

Abstract
We consider the problem of optimal transport between two high-dimensional distributions μ,ν in ℝⁿ from a new algorithmic perspective, in which we are given a sample x ∼ μ and we have to find a close y ∼ ν while running in poly(n) time, where n is the size/dimension of x,y. In other words, we are interested in making the running time bounded in dimension of the spaces rather than bounded in the total size of the representations of the two distributions. Our main result is a general algorithmic transport result between any product distribution μ and an arbitrary distribution ν of total cost Δ + δ under 𝓁_p^p cost; here Δ is the cost of the so-called Knothe–Rosenblatt transport from μ to ν, while δ is a computational error that goes to zero for larger running time in the transport algorithm. For this result, we need ν to be "sequentially samplable" with a "bounded average sampling cost" which is a novel but natural notion of independent interest. In addition, we prove the following. - We prove an algorithmic version of the celebrated Talagrand’s inequality for transporting the standard Gaussian distribution Φⁿ to an arbitrary ν under the Euclidean-squared cost. When ν is Φⁿ conditioned on a set S of measure ε, we show how to implement the needed sequential sampler for ν in expected time poly(n/ε), using membership oracle access to S. Hence, we obtain an algorithmic transport that maps Φⁿ to Φⁿ|S in time poly(n/ε) and expected Euclidean-squared distance O(log 1/ε), which is optimal for a general set S of measure ε. - As corollary, we find the first computational concentration (Etesami et al. SODA 2020) result for the Gaussian measure under the Euclidean distance with a dimension-independent transportation cost, resolving a question of Etesami et al. More precisely, for any set S of Gaussian measure ε, we map most of Φⁿ samples to S with Euclidean distance O(√{log 1/ε}) in time poly(n/ε).

Unsupervised Multimodal Learning for Fault Diagnosis and Prognosis - Application to Radiotherapy Systems (PhD Panel)

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 136, 36th International Conference on Principles of Diagnosis and Resilient Systems (DX 2025)

Abstract
Modern complex systems, such as radiotherapy machines, require robust strategies for fault detection, diagnosis, and prognosis to ensure operational continuity and patient safety. While data-driven methods have gained traction, few studies address diagnostic and prognostic tasks using multimodal operational data under unsupervised or semi-supervised learning settings. This gap is particularly critical given the scarcity of labeled failure data in real-world environments. This work aims to design a unified approach for fault detection, diagnosis, and prognosis using multimodal data in the absence of complete labeling. To this end, autoencoders (AEs) are employed due to their suitability for unsupervised and self-supervised learning, flexibility in handling heterogeneous data, and ability to construct latent representations optimized for various downstream tasks. A specific implementation based on a Long Short-Term Memory β-Variational Autoencoder (LSTM-β-VAE) was developed to detect anomalies in machine logs. This framework is applied to TomoTherapy® systems - a highly complex and under-explored use case within the radiotherapy domain. Initial results demonstrate strong anomaly detection performance on both a public benchmark dataset (HDFS) and a proprietary dataset derived from real-world TomoTherapy® machine faults. Beyond methodology, the paper includes a concise literature review of multimodal learning and data-driven diagnosis and prognosis with a focus on AEs. Based on this review, key research directions are identified for the continuation of the thesis, especially the integration of explainable AI as a means to enhance diagnosis capabilities in the absence of labeled faults.

Optimized Spectral Fault Receptive Fields for Diagnosis-Informed Prognosis

Authors: Stan Muñoz Gutiérrez and Franz Wotawa

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 136, 36th International Conference on Principles of Diagnosis and Resilient Systems (DX 2025)

Abstract
This paper introduces Spectral Fault Receptive Fields (SFRFs), a biologically inspired technique for degradation state assessment in bearing fault diagnosis and remaining useful life (RUL) estimation. Drawing on the center-surround organization of retinal ganglion cell receptive fields, we propose a frequency-domain feature extraction algorithm that enhances the detection of fault signatures in vibration signals. SFRFs are designed as antagonistic spectral filters centered on characteristic fault frequencies, with inhibitory surrounds that enable robust characterization of incipient faults under variable operating conditions. A multi-objective evolutionary optimization strategy based on NSGA-II algorithm is employed to tune the receptive field parameters by simultaneously minimizing RUL prediction error, maximizing feature monotonicity, and promoting smooth degradation trajectories. The method is demonstrated on the XJTU-SY bearing run-to-failure dataset, confirming its suitability for constructing condition indicators in health monitoring applications. Key contributions include: (i) the introduction of SFRFs, inspired by the biology of vision in the primate retina; (ii) an evolutionary optimization framework guided by condition monitoring and prognosis criteria; and (iii) experimental evidence supporting the detection of early-stage faults and their precursors. Furthermore, we confirm that our diagnosis-informed spectral representation achieves accurate RUL prediction using a bagging regressor. The results highlight the interpretability and principled design of SFRFs, bridging signal processing, biological sensing principles, and data-driven prognostics in rotating machinery.

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 130, Advancing Human-Computer Interaction for Space Exploration (SpaceCHI 2025)

Abstract
As humanity advances toward long-term space habitation, traditional SHM systems - reliant on abstract data representations - struggle to support rapid decision-making in extreme environments. This study addresses this critical gap by introducing an engineering-art-human factors framework that transforms SHM through immersive data-art visualization. By integrating sensor networks and machine learning, structural data (stress, vibration, deformation) is converted into intuitive visual languages: dynamic color gradients and biomimetic morphologies leverage perceptual laws (e.g., Weber-Fechner) to amplify critical signals. Multimodal interfaces (AR, haptic feedback) and natural elements mitigate cognitive load and psychological stress in confined habitats. Our contribution lies in redefining SHM as a synergy of precision and intuition, enabling "at-a-glance" assessments while balancing functionality and human-centric design. The urgency of this research stems from the inadequacy of conventional systems in extreme space conditions and the growing demand for astronaut safety and operational efficiency. This framework not only pioneers a sustainable monitoring paradigm for space habitats but also extends to terrestrial high-risk infrastructure, demonstrating the necessity of interdisciplinary innovation in extreme environments.

RANDOM
Time Lower Bounds for the Metropolis Process and Simulated Annealing

Abstract
The Metropolis process (MP) and Simulated Annealing (SA) are stochastic local search heuristics that are often used in solving combinatorial optimization problems. Despite significant interest, there are very few theoretical results regarding the quality of approximation obtained by MP and SA (with polynomially many iterations) for NP-hard optimization problems. We provide rigorous lower bounds for MP and SA with respect to the classical maximum independent set problem when the algorithms are initialized from the empty set. We establish the existence of a family of graphs for which both MP and SA fail to find approximate solutions in polynomial time. More specifically, we show that for any ε ∈ (0,1) there are n-vertex graphs for which the probability SA (when limited to polynomially many iterations) will approximate the optimal solution within ratio Ω(1/n^{1-ε}) is exponentially small. Our lower bounds extend to graphs of constant average degree d, illustrating the failure of MP to achieve an approximation ratio of Ω(log(d)/d) in polynomial time. In some cases, our lower bounds apply even when the temperature is chosen adaptively. Finally, we prove exponential-time lower bounds when the inputs to these algorithms are bipartite graphs, and even trees, which are known to admit polynomial-time algorithms for the independent set problem.

Efficient Parallel Ising Samplers via Localization Schemes

Abstract
We introduce efficient parallel algorithms for sampling from the Gibbs distribution and estimating the partition function of Ising models. These algorithms achieve parallel efficiency, with polylogarithmic depth and polynomial total work, and are applicable to Ising models in the following regimes: (1) Ferromagnetic Ising models with external fields; (2) Ising models with interaction matrix J of operator norm ‖J‖₂ < 1. Our parallel Gibbs sampling approaches are based on localization schemes, which have proven highly effective in establishing rapid mixing of Gibbs sampling. In this work, we employ two such localization schemes to obtain efficient parallel Ising samplers: the field dynamics induced by negative-field localization, and restricted Gaussian dynamics induced by stochastic localization. This shows that localization schemes are powerful tools, not only for achieving rapid mixing but also for the efficient parallelization of Gibbs sampling.

In-Browser C++ Interpreter for Lightweight Intelligent Programming Learning Environments

Authors: Tomas Blažauskas, Arnoldas Rauba, Jakub Swacha, Raffaele Montella, and Rytis Maskeliunas

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 133, 6th International Computer Programming Education Conference (ICPEC 2025)

Abstract
The paper presents a browser native C++ interpreter integrated into an AI-assisted educational platform designed to enhance programming learning in formal education. The interpreter leverages Parsing Expression Grammars (PEG) to generate Abstract Syntax Trees (AST) and executes C++ code using a TypeScript-based runtime. The system supports key C++ features, including pointer arithmetic, function overloading, and namespace resolution, and emulates memory management via reference-counted JavaScript objects. Integrated within a web-based learning environment, it provides automated feedback, error explanations, and code quality evaluations. The evaluation involved 4582 students in three difficulty levels and feedback from 14 teachers. The results include high system usability scale (SUS) scores (avg. 83.5) and WBLT learning effectiveness scores (avg. 4.58/5). Interpreter performance testing in 65 cases averaged under 10 ms per task, confirming its practical applicability to school curricula. The system supports SCORM and PWA deployment, enabling LMS-independent usage. The work introduces a technical innovation in browser-based C++ execution and a scalable framework for LLM-enhanced programming pedagogy.
