Explaining Reasoning Results for Description Logic Ontologies (Invited Paper)

Abstract
The Web Ontology Language (OWL), grounded in description logics, enables reasoning systems to infer implicit knowledge in a transparent manner. However, the expressivity of description logics and the complexity of large ontologies often results in reasoning outcomes that are hard to understand without additional tool support. Explanations of these outcomes are essential for users to understand ontology content, communicate its structure and behavior effectively, and debug undesired or missing inferences. This chapter provides an overview of the central explanation techniques that have been developed for explaining reasoning with description logic ontologies. Here, we consider both explanations for positive entailments (explaining why something can be deduced), as well as negative entailments (why something cannot be deduced). More specifically, we discuss justifications, proofs and interpolation as a means to explain positive entailments, and abduction for explaining negative entailments, where we also have a closer look at practical algorithms as well as practical and theoretical challenges.

Human-AI Interaction in Space: Insights from a Mars Analog Mission with the Harmony Large Language Model

Abstract
The operational complexities of space missions require reliable, context-aware technical assistance for astronauts, especially when technical expertise is not available onboard and communication with Earth is delayed or limited. In this context, Large Language Models present a promising opportunity to augment human capabilities. To this end, we present Harmony, a model designed to provide astronauts with real-time technical assistance, fostering human-AI collaboration during analog missions. We report empirical results from an experiment involving seven analog astronauts that evaluated their user experience with Harmony in both a conventional environment and an isolated, confined, and extreme physical setting at the Mars Desert Research Station over four sessions, and discuss how the Mars analog environment impacted their experience. Our findings reveal the extent to which human-AI interactions evolve across various user experience dimensions and suggest how Harmony can be further adapted to suit extreme environments, with a focus on SpaceCHI.

Advancing Intelligent Personal Assistants for Human Spaceflight

Abstract
The Artemis program and upcoming missions to Mars mark a new era of human space exploration that will require new tools to support astronaut autonomy in the absence of real-time communication with Earth. This paper investigates the role of voice-based intelligent personal assistants (IPAs) in future crewed space missions. Through semi-structured interviews with astronauts (n=3) and spaceflight experts (n=12), we identify key user-centered design requirements for IPAs in this uniquely constrained and safety-critical environment. Our thematic analysis reveals core requirements for flexibility, reliability, offline capability, and multimodal interaction. Drawing on these findings, we outline design guidelines for next-generation IPAs and discuss how technologies such as retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), knowledge graphs, and augmented reality should be combined to support flexible, reliable, and multimodal IPAs for future human spaceflight missions.

Exploring the Symbiotic Collaboration Paradigm in Virtual Reality and Its Potential Applications to Human Spaceflight

Abstract
As the quest to go back to the Moon and beyond continues, preparation for such critical missions relies in part on the use of immersive technologies. Especially, Virtual Reality (VR) unique affordances allow to simulate scenarios in a convincing digitally recreated space. But the potential of VR is not limited to solely emulating real-world environments. Indeed, some works from the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) community explored new ways to collaborate virtually by inhabiting the same virtual representation, namely an avatar. Taking this paradigm further, one could offer new ways to collaborate between an immersed VR user and an external supervisor being granted access to the virtual environment by way of non-immersive devices like a computer or a smartphone. The non-immersed user could for instance inhabit some body parts of the VR user’s avatar to benefit from unique viewpoints and leverage mutual spatial awareness, as well as social interactions, alike a symbiotic relationship that benefits both actors. Therefore, this paper introduces our on-going research project exploring this new paradigm of symbiotic co-embodiment as a tool leveraging social presence during supervised embodied sessions in VR. It especially discusses how this paradigm could benefit human spaceflight, both in mission preparation and during spaceflight.

Toward an Earth-Independent System for EVA Mission Planning: Integrating Physical Models, Domain Knowledge, and Agentic RAG to Provide Explainable LLM-Based Decision Support

Abstract
We propose a unified framework for an Earth‑independent AI system that provides explainable, context‑aware decision support for EVA mission planning by integrating six core components: a fine‑tuned EVA domain LLM, a retrieval‑augmented knowledge base, a short-term memory store, physical simulation models, an agentic orchestration layer, and a multimodal user interface. To ground our design, we analyze the current roles and substitution potential of the Mission Control Center - identifying which procedural and analytical functions can be automated onboard while preserving human oversight for experiential and strategic tasks. Building on this framework, we introduce RASAGE (Retrieval & Simulation Augmented Guidance Agent for Exploration), a proof‑of‑concept toolset that combines Microsoft Phi‑4‑mini‑instruct with a FAISS (Facebook AI Similarity Search)‑powered EVA knowledge base and custom A* path planning and hypogravity metabolic models to generate grounded, traceable EVA plans. We outline a staged validation strategy to evaluate improvements in route efficiency, metabolic prediction accuracy, anomaly response effectiveness, and crew trust under realistic communication delays. Our findings demonstrate the feasibility of replicating key Mission Control functions onboard, enhancing crew autonomy, reducing cognitive load, and improving safety for deep‑space exploration missions.

Polymorphic Cycle Basis in a Sequence of Graphs to Analyze the Structural Evolution of a Molecular Dynamic Trajectory

Abstract
Molecular dynamics analysis is a fundamental topic in chemistry, in particular the study of the formation and dissolution of hydrogen bonds over time. The dynamics of these bonds create and break cycles which are crucial to the structure of the molecules. The challenge in cycle analysis is twofold: there is an exponential number of cycles, and some cycles are very close. We introduce a graph-based approach using minimum cycle bases to assist in molecular dynamics analysis. Given a set of graphs representing a molecule trajectory, we determine, for each graph, a minimum cycle basis and construct a graph of cycles which represents the cycles of minimum bases and their interactions. Then, we aggregate all information from these graphs of cycles into a polygraph. Each vertex of the polygraph represents a class of cycles appearing in different minimum bases and playing equivalent roles in the trajectory. This paper introduces our approach, establishes the complexity of associated problems, and suggests an implementation. Simulations are conducted on both real and generated data to evaluate the performance of our approach.

Uncertainty Management in the Construction of Knowledge Graphs: A Survey

Abstract
Knowledge Graphs (KGs) are a major asset for companies thanks to their great flexibility in data representation and their numerous applications, e.g., vocabulary sharing, Q&A or recommendation systems. To build a KG, it is a common practice to rely on automatic methods for extracting knowledge from various heterogeneous sources. However, in a noisy and uncertain world, knowledge may not be reliable and conflicts between data sources may occur. Integrating unreliable data would directly impact the use of the KG, therefore such conflicts must be resolved. This could be done manually by selecting the best data to integrate. This first approach is highly accurate, but costly and time-consuming. That is why recent efforts focus on automatic approaches, which represent a challenging task since it requires handling the uncertainty of extracted knowledge throughout its integration into the KG. We survey state-of-the-art approaches in this direction and present constructions of both open and enterprise KGs. We then describe different knowledge extraction methods and discuss downstream tasks after knowledge acquisition, including KG completion using embedding models, knowledge alignment, and knowledge fusion in order to address the problem of knowledge uncertainty in KG construction. We conclude with a discussion on the remaining challenges and perspectives when constructing a KG taking into account uncertainty.

The Reasonable Ontology Templates Framework

Abstract
Reasonable Ontology Templates (OTTR) is a templating language for representing and instantiating patterns. It is based on simple and generic, but powerful, mechanisms such as recursive macro expansion, term substitution and type systems, and is designed particularly for building and maintaining RDF knowledge graphs and OWL ontologies. In this resource paper, we present the formal specifications that define the OTTR framework. This includes the fundamentals of the OTTR language and the adaptions to make it fit with standard semantic web languages, and two serialization formats developed for semantic web practitioners. We also present the OTTR framework’s support for documenting, publishing and managing template libraries, and for tools for practical bulk instantiation of templates from tabular data and queryable data sources. The functionality of the OTTR framework is available for use through Lutra, an open-source reference implementation, and other independent implementations. We report on the use and impact of OTTR by presenting selected industrial use cases. Finally, we reflect on some design considerations of the language and framework and present ideas for future work.

Abstract
Information modelling for databases and object-oriented information systems avails of conceptual data modelling languages such as EER and UML Class Diagrams. Many attempts exist to add logical rigour to them, for various reasons and with disparate strengths. In this paper we aim to provide a structured overview of the many efforts. We focus on aims, approaches to the formalisation, including key dimensions of choice points, popular logics used, and the main relevant reasoning services. We close with current challenges and research directions.

Towards Linguistically-Grounded Spatial Logics

Abstract
We propose a method to analyze the amount of coverage and adequacy of spatial calculi by relating a calculus to a linguistic ontology for space by using similarities and linguistic corpus data. This allows evaluating whether and where a spatial calculus can be used for natural language interpretation. It can also lead to 'more appropriate' spatial logics for spatial language.
