Abstract
We study motion-planning problems for planar robotic arms that rotate around fixed centers while avoiding collisions. In the SM-RAMP model, each unit-length arm may rotate at most once; the question is whether all arms can be rotated to the vertical position. We resolve an open problem of Bousquet et al. [Bousquet et al., 2026] by proving that SM-RAMP is NP-complete, even in the horizontal-to-vertical setting. Our hardness proof uses a structural analysis of rotation-propagation chains and introduces a combinatorial abstraction of independent interest, the Lighthouse Propagation problem, which we show is itself NP-complete. We then consider the multi-move variant MM-RAMP, where each arm may rotate multiple times among a fixed set of allowed angles (or orientations). We prove that MM-RAMP is PSPACE-complete even when each arm has only a few allowed angles, in sharp contrast with the single-move case. Finally, we give two fixed-parameter tractable algorithms: for MAX-SM-RAMP parameterized by the number k of arms to be made vertical, and for 2A-MM-RAMP (restricted to horizontal and vertical) parameterized by the number 𝓁 of allowed rotations.

Higher Hardness Results for the Reconfiguration of Odd Matchings

Authors: Joseph Dorfer

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 364, 43rd International Symposium on Theoretical Aspects of Computer Science (STACS 2026)

Abstract
We study the reconfiguration of odd matchings of combinatorial graphs. Odd matchings are matchings that cover all but one vertex of a graph. A reconfiguration step, or flip, is an operation that matches the isolated vertex and, consequently, isolates another vertex. The flip graph of odd matchings is a graph that has all odd matchings of a graph as vertices and an edge between two vertices if their corresponding matchings can be transformed into one another via a single flip. We show that computing the diameter of the flip graph of odd matchings is Π₂^p-hard. This complements a recent result by Wulf [FOCS25] that it is Π₂^p-hard to compute the diameter of the flip graph of perfect matchings where a flip swaps matching edges along a single cycle of unbounded size. Further, we show that computing the radius of the flip graph of odd matchings is Σ₃^p-hard. The respective decision problems for the diameter and the radius are also complete in the respective level of the polynomial hierarchy. This shows that computing the radius of the flip graph of odd matchings is provably harder than computing its diameter, unless the polynomial hierarchy collapses. Finally, we reduce set cover to the problem of finding shortest flip sequences. As a consequence, we show APX-hardness and that the problem cannot be approximated by a sublogarithmic factor. By doing so, we answer a question asked by Aichholzer, Brenner, Dorfer, Hoang, Perz, Rieck, and Verciani [GD25].

A Linear Kernel for Independent Set Reconfiguration in Planar Graphs

Authors: Nicolas Bousquet and Daniel W. Cranston

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 364, 43rd International Symposium on Theoretical Aspects of Computer Science (STACS 2026)

Abstract
Fix a positive integer r, and a graph G that is K_{3,r}-minor-free. Let I_s and I_t be two independent sets in G, each of size k. We begin with a "token" on each vertex of I_s and seek to move all tokens to I_t, by repeated "token jumping", removing a single token from one vertex and placing it on another vertex. We require that each intermediate arrangement of tokens again specifies an independent set of size k. Given G, I_s, and I_t, we ask whether there exists a sequence of token jumps that transforms I_s into I_t. When k is part of the input, this problem is known to be PSPACE-complete. But it was shown by Ito, Kamiński, and Ono [Ito et al., 2014] to be fixed-parameter tractable. That is, the problem can be solved in time f(k)⋅ P(n), for some function f and polynomial P, where n denotes the order of G. Here we strengthen the upper bound on the running time in terms of k by showing that the problem has a kernel of size linear in k. More precisely, we transform an arbitrary input problem on a K_{3,r}-minor-free graph (for some fixed positive integer r) into an equivalent problem on a (K_{3,r}-minor-free) graph with order O(k). This answers positively a question of Bousquet, Mouawad, Nishimura, and Siebertz [Nicolas Bousquet et al., 2022] and improves the recent quadratic kernel of Cranston, Mühlenthaler, and Peyrille [Daniel W. Cranston et al., 2024]. For planar graphs, we further strengthen this upper bound to get a kernel of size at most 42k.

Token Sliding Independent Set Reconfiguration on Block Graphs

Authors: Mathew C. Francis and Veena Prabhakaran

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 360, 45th IARCS Annual Conference on Foundations of Software Technology and Theoretical Computer Science (FSTTCS 2025)

Abstract
Let S be an independent set of a simple undirected graph G. Suppose that each vertex of S has a token placed on it. The tokens are allowed to be moved, one at a time, by sliding along the edges of G while maintaining the property that after each move, the vertices having tokens always form an independent set of G. We would like to determine whether the tokens can be eventually brought to stay on the vertices of another independent set S' of G in this manner. In other words, we would like to decide if we can transform S into S' through a sequence of steps, each of which involves substituting a vertex in the current independent set with one of its neighbours to obtain another independent set. This problem of determining if one independent set of a graph "is reachable" from another independent set of it is known to be PSPACE-hard even for split graphs, planar graphs, and graphs of bounded treewidth. Polynomial time algorithms have been obtained for certain graph classes like trees, interval graphs, claw-free graphs, and bipartite permutation graphs. We present a polynomial time algorithm for the problem on block graphs, which are the graphs in which every maximal 2-connected subgraph is a clique. Our algorithm is the first generalization of the known polynomial time algorithm for trees to a larger class of graphs.

Reachability of Independent Sets and Vertex Covers Under Extended Reconfiguration Rules

Abstract
In reconfiguration problems, we are given two feasible solutions to a graph problem and asked whether one can be transformed into the other via a sequence of feasible intermediate solutions under a given reconfiguration rule. While earlier work focused on modifying a single element at a time, recent studies have started examining how different rules impact computational complexity. Motivated by recent progress, we study Independent Set Reconfiguration (ISR) and Vertex Cover Reconfiguration (VCR) under the k-Token Jumping (k-TJ) and k-Token Sliding (k-TS) models. In k-TJ, up to k vertices may be replaced, while k-TS additionally requires a perfect matching between removed and added vertices. It is known that the complexity of ISR crucially depends on k, ranging from PSPACE-complete and NP-complete to polynomial-time solvable. In this paper, we further explore the gradient of computational complexity of the problems. We first show that ISR under k-TJ with k = |I| - μ remains NP-hard when μ is any fixed positive integer and the input graph is restricted to graphs of maximum degree 3 or planar graphs of maximum degree 4, where |I| is the size of feasible solutions. In addition, we prove that the problem belongs to NP not only for μ = O(1) but also for μ = O(log |I|). In contrast, we show that VCR under k-TJ is in XP when parameterized by μ = |S| - k, where |S| is the size of feasible solutions. Furthermore, we establish the PSPACE-completeness of ISR and VCR under both k-TJ and k-TS on several graph classes, for fixed k as well as superconstant k relative to the size of feasible solutions.

Coloring Reconfiguration Under Color Swapping

Authors: Janosch Fuchs, Rin Saito, Tatsuhiro Suga, Takahiro Suzuki, and Yuma Tamura

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 359, 36th International Symposium on Algorithms and Computation (ISAAC 2025)

Abstract
In the Coloring Reconfiguration problem, we are given two proper k-colorings of a graph and asked to decide whether one can be transformed into the other by repeatedly applying a specified recoloring rule, while maintaining a proper coloring throughout. For this problem, two recoloring rules have been widely studied: single-vertex recoloring and Kempe chain recoloring. In this paper, we introduce a new rule, called color swapping, where two adjacent vertices may exchange their colors, so that the resulting coloring remains proper, and study the computational complexity of the problem under this rule. We first establish a complexity dichotomy with respect to k: the problem is solvable in polynomial time for k ≤ 2, and is PSPACE-complete for k ≥ 3. We further show that the problem remains PSPACE-complete even on restricted graph classes, including bipartite graphs, split graphs, and planar graphs of bounded degree. In contrast, we present polynomial-time algorithms for several graph classes: for paths when k = 3, for split graphs when k is fixed, and for cographs when k is arbitrary.

The Tape Reconfiguration Problem and Its Consequences for Dominating Set Reconfiguration

Authors: Nicolas Bousquet, Quentin Deschamps, Arnaud Mary, Amer E. Mouawad, and Théo Pierron

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 351, 33rd Annual European Symposium on Algorithms (ESA 2025)

Abstract
A dominating set of a graph G = (V,E) is a set of vertices D ⊆ V whose closed neighborhood is V, i.e., N[D] = V. We view a dominating set as a collection of tokens placed on the vertices of D. In the token sliding variant of the Dominating Set Reconfiguration problem (TS-DSR), we seek to transform a source dominating set into a target dominating set in G by sliding tokens along edges, and while maintaining a dominating set all along the transformation. TS-DSR is known to be PSPACE-complete even restricted to graphs of pathwidth w, for some non-explicit constant w and to be XL-complete parameterized by the size k of the solution. The first contribution of this article consists in using a novel approach to provide the first explicit constant for which the TS-DSR problem is PSPACE-complete, a question that was left open in the literature. From a parameterized complexity perspective, the token jumping variant of DSR, i.e., where tokens can jump to arbitrary vertices, is known to be FPT when parameterized by the size of the dominating sets on nowhere dense classes of graphs. But, in contrast, no non-trivial result was known about TS-DSR. We prove that DSR is actually much harder in the sliding model since it is XL-complete when restricted to bounded pathwidth graphs and even when parameterized by k plus the feedback vertex set number of the graph. This gives, for the first time, a difference of behavior between the complexity under token sliding and token jumping for some problem on graphs of bounded treewidth. All our results are obtained using a brand new method, based on the hardness of the so-called Tape Reconfiguration problem, a problem we believe to be of independent interest. We complement these hardness results with a positive result showing that DSR (parameterized by k) in the sliding model is FPT on planar graphs, also answering an open problem from the literature.

Fault-Tolerant Matroid Bases

Authors: Matthias Bentert, Fedor V. Fomin, Petr A. Golovach, and Laure Morelle

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 351, 33rd Annual European Symposium on Algorithms (ESA 2025)

Abstract
We investigate the problem of constructing fault-tolerant bases in matroids. Given a matroid ℳ and a redundancy parameter k, a k-fault-tolerant basis is a minimum-size set of elements such that, even after the removal of any k elements, the remaining subset still spans the entire ground set. Since matroids generalize linear independence across structures such as vector spaces, graphs, and set systems, this problem unifies and extends several fault-tolerant concepts appearing in prior research. Our main contribution is a fixed-parameter tractable (FPT) algorithm for the k-fault-tolerant basis problem, parameterized by both k and the rank r of the matroid. This two-variable parameterization by k + r is shown to be tight in the following sense. On the one hand, the problem is already NP-hard for k = 1. On the other hand, it is Para-NP-hard for r ≥ 3 and polynomial-time solvable for r ≤ 2.

Min-CSPs on Complete Instances II: Polylogarithmic Approximation for Min-NAE-3-SAT

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 353, Approximation, Randomization, and Combinatorial Optimization. Algorithms and Techniques (APPROX/RANDOM 2025)

Abstract
This paper studies complete k-Constraint Satisfaction Problems (CSPs), where an n-variable instance has exactly one nontrivial constraint for each subset of k variables, i.e., it has binom(n,k) constraints. A recent work started a systematic study of complete k-CSPs [Anand, Lee, Sharma, SODA'25], and showed a quasi-polynomial time algorithm that decides if there is an assignment satisfying all the constraints of any complete Boolean-alphabet k-CSP, algorithmically separating complete instances from dense instances. The tractability of this decision problem is necessary for any nontrivial (multiplicative) approximation for the minimization version, whose goal is to minimize the number of violated constraints. The same paper raised the question of whether it is possible to obtain nontrivial approximation algorithms for complete Min-k-CSPs with k ≥ 3. In this work, we make progress in this direction and show a quasi-polynomial time polylog(n)-approximation to Min-NAE-3-SAT on complete instances, which asks to minimize the number of 3-clauses where all the three literals equal the same bit. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first known example of a CSP whose decision version is NP-Hard in general (and dense) instances while admitting a polylog(n)-approximation in complete instances. Our algorithm presents a new iterative framework for rounding a solution from the Sherali-Adams hierarchy, where each iteration interleaves the two well-known rounding tools: the conditioning procedure, in order to "almost fix" many variables, and the thresholding procedure, in order to "completely fix" them. Finally, we improve the running time of the decision algorithms of Anand, Lee, and Sharma and show a simple algorithm that decides any complete Boolean-alphabet k-CSP in polynomial time.

Improved Approximation Algorithms for Capacitated Network Design and Flexible Graph Connectivity

Abstract
We present improved approximation algorithms for some problems in the related areas of Capacitated Network Design and Flexible Graph Connectivity. In the Cap-k-ECSS problem, we are given a graph G = (V,E) whose edges have non-negative costs and positive integer capacities, and the goal is to find a minimum-cost edge-set F such that every non-trivial cut of the graph G' = (V,F) has capacity at least k. Let n = |V| and let u_{min} (respectively, u_{max}) denote the minimum (respectively, maximum) capacity of an edge; assume that u_{max} ≤ k. We present an O(log({k}/u_{min}))-approximation algorithm for the Cap-k-ECSS problem, asymptotically improving upon the previous best approximation ratio of min(O(log{n}), k, 2u_{max}, 6 ⋅ {⌈ k/u_{min} ⌉}) whenever log(k/u_{min}) = o(log{n}) and u_{max} is sufficiently large. In the (p,q)-Flexible Graph Connectivity problem, denoted (p,q)-FGC, the input is a graph G = (V, E) where E is partitioned into safe and unsafe edges, and the goal is to find a minimum-cost edge-set F such that the subgraph G' = (V, F) remains p-edge connected upon removal of any q unsafe edges from F. We present an 8-approximation algorithm for the (1,q)-FGC problem that improves upon the previous best approximation ratio of (q+1). Both of our results are obtained by using natural LP relaxations strengthened with the knapsack-cover inequalities, and then, during the rounding process, utilizing a recent O(1)-approximation algorithm for the Cover Small Cuts problem. In the latter problem, the goal is to find a minimum-cost set of links such that each non-trivial cut of capacity less than a specified value is covered by a link. We also show that the problem of covering small cuts inherently arises in another variant of (p,q)-FGC. Specifically, we give Cook reductions that preserve approximation ratios within O(1) factors between the (2,q)-FGC problem and the 2-Cover Small Cuts problem; in the latter problem, each small cut needs to be covered by two links.

Asymptotically Optimal Inapproximability of Maxmin k-Cut Reconfiguration

Authors: Shuichi Hirahara and Naoto Ohsaka

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 334, 52nd International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2025)

Abstract
k-Coloring Reconfiguration is one of the most well-studied reconfiguration problems, which asks to transform a given proper k-coloring of a graph to another by repeatedly recoloring a single vertex. Its approximate version, Maxmin k-Cut Reconfiguration, is defined as an optimization problem of maximizing the minimum fraction of bichromatic edges during the transformation between (not necessarily proper) k-colorings. In this paper, we demonstrate that the optimal approximation factor of this problem is 1 - Θ(1/k) for every k ≥ 2. Specifically, we prove the PSPACE-hardness of approximating the objective value within a factor of 1 - ε/k for some universal constant ε > 0, whereas we develop a deterministic polynomial-time algorithm that achieves the approximation factor of 1 - 2/k. To prove the hardness result, we propose a new probabilistic verifier that tests a "striped" pattern. Our approximation algorithm is based on a random transformation that passes through a random k-coloring.

Protecting the Connectivity of a Graph Under Non-Uniform Edge Failures

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 327, 42nd International Symposium on Theoretical Aspects of Computer Science (STACS 2025)

Abstract
We study the problem of guaranteeing the connectivity of a given graph by protecting or strengthening edges. Herein, a protected edge is assumed to be robust and will not fail, which features a non-uniform failure model. We introduce the (p,q)-Steiner-Connectivity Preservation problem where we protect a minimum-cost set of edges such that the underlying graph maintains p-edge-connectivity between given terminal pairs against edge failures, assuming at most q unprotected edges can fail. We design polynomial-time exact algorithms for the cases where p and q are small and approximation algorithms for general values of p and q. Additionally, we show that when both p and q are part of the input, even deciding whether a given solution is feasible is NP-complete. This hardness also carries over to Flexible Network Design, a research direction that has gained significant attention. In particular, previous work focuses on problem settings where either p or q is constant, for which our new hardness result now provides justification.

Minimum Separator Reconfiguration

Abstract
We study the problem of reconfiguring one minimum s-t-separator A into another minimum s-t-separator B in some n-vertex graph G containing two non-adjacent vertices s and t. We consider several variants of the problem as we focus on both the token sliding and token jumping models. Our first contribution is a polynomial-time algorithm that computes (if one exists) a minimum-length sequence of slides transforming A into B. We additionally establish that the existence of a sequence of jumps (which need not be of minimum length) can be decided in polynomial time (by an algorithm that also outputs a witnessing sequence when one exists). In contrast, and somewhat surprisingly, we show that deciding if a sequence of at most 𝓁 jumps can transform A into B is an NP-complete problem. To complement this negative result, we investigate the parameterized complexity of what we believe to be the two most natural parameterized counterparts of the latter problem; in particular, we study the problem of computing a minimum-length sequence of jumps when parameterized by the size k of the minimum s-t-separators and when parameterized by the number 𝓁 of jumps. For the first parameterization, we show that the problem is fixed-parameter tractable, but does not admit a polynomial kernel unless NP ⊆ coNP/poly. We complete the picture by designing a kernel with 𝒪(𝓁²) vertices and edges for the length 𝓁 of the sequence as a parameter.

Reconfiguration of Digraph Homomorphisms

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 254, 40th International Symposium on Theoretical Aspects of Computer Science (STACS 2023)

Abstract
For a fixed graph H, the H-Recoloring problem asks whether, given two homomorphisms from a graph G to H, one homomorphism can be transformed into the other by changing the image of a single vertex in each step and maintaining a homomorphism to H throughout. The most general algorithmic result for H-Recoloring so far has been proposed by Wrochna in 2014, who introduced a topological approach to obtain a polynomial-time algorithm for any undirected loopless square-free graph H. We show that the topological approach can be used to recover essentially all previous algorithmic results for H-Recoloring and that it is applicable also in the more general setting of digraph homomorphisms. In particular, we show that H-Recoloring admits a polynomial-time algorithm i) if H is a loopless digraph that does not contain a 4-cycle of algebraic girth 0 and ii) if H is a reflexive digraph that contains no triangle of algebraic girth 1 and no 4-cycle of algebraic girth 0.

Fault-Tolerant Edge-Disjoint s-t Paths - Beyond Uniform Faults

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 227, 18th Scandinavian Symposium and Workshops on Algorithm Theory (SWAT 2022)

Abstract
The Edge-disjoint s-t Paths Problem (s-t EDP) is a classical network design problem whose goal is to connect for some k ≥ 1 two given vertices of a graph under the condition that any k-1 edges of the graph may fail. We extend the simple uniform failure model of the s-t EDP as follows: the edge set of the graph is partitioned into vulnerable, and safe edges, and a set of at most k vulnerable edges may fail, while safe edges do not fail. In particular we study the Fault-Tolerant Path (FTP) problem, the counterpart of the Shortest s-t Path problem in this non-uniform failure model as well as the Fault-Tolerant Flow (FTF) problem, the counterpart of s-t EDP. We present complexity results alongside exact and approximation algorithms for both problems. We emphasize the vast increase in complexity of the problems compared to s-t EDP.
