Longest Common Extension of a Dynamic String in Parallel Constant Time

Abstract
A longest common extension (LCE) query on a string computes the length of the longest common suffix or prefix at two given positions. A dynamic LCE algorithm maintains a data structure that allows efficient LCE queries on a string that can change via character insertions and deletions. A dynamic parallel constant-time algorithm is presented that can maintain LCE queries on a common CRCW PRAM with 𝒪(n^ε) work, for any ε > 0. The algorithm maintains a string synchronizing sets hierarchy, which it uses to answer substring equality queries, which it in turn uses to answer LCE queries. To achieve constant runtime, the algorithm allows parts of its information to become outdated by up to log n log^* n updates. It answers queries by combining this slightly outdated information with a list of the recent changes. Two applications of this dynamic LCE algorithm are shown. Firstly, a dynamic parallel constant-time algorithm can maintain membership in a Dyck language D_k, k > 0 with 𝒪(n^ε) work for any ε > 0. Secondly, a dynamic parallel constant-time algorithm can maintain squares with 𝒪(n^ε) work for any ε > 0.

Model-Agnostic Uncertainty-Aware Semantic Segmentation with Conformal Risk Guarantees for Scene Understanding

Abstract
Accurate and reliable scene segmentation is a fundamental requirement for autonomous navigation systems operating in open and dynamic environments. As these systems increasingly rely on data-driven perception modules, their safety and operational robustness hinge on well-calibrated uncertainty estimates that can support explicit control of prediction errors through conformal calibration. Most existing uncertainty-aware segmentation approaches remain architecture-specific and are not evaluated under a common uncertainty-and-calibration protocol across distinct segmentation architectures and datasets. This work introduces a model-agnostic conformal segmentation pipeline that enables operationally meaningful, calibration-based error control in real-world deployments. The proposed framework treats segmentation networks as black boxes and operates on per-pixel class probabilities that are fine-tuned through evidential deep learning (EDL) to decompose aleatoric and epistemic uncertainties. We then apply pixel-wise, class-conditional split-conformal calibration to derive acceptance thresholds for user-defined target error rates. We instantiate the pipeline with DINOv2, Mask2Former, and SegFormer and evaluate it on a newly collected Lisbon street scene (LiSS) dataset; additional cross-dataset results on COCO, using a restricted set of safety-relevant classes, are reported in the appendix. Results show architecture- and class-dependent in-domain uncertainty-error alignment and indicate that dataset shift weakens uncertainty-based filtering and conformal risk control. This motivates continuous monitoring and recalibration as a practical requirement for trustworthy segmentation in safety-critical navigation.

Temporal Modelling in Cultural Heritage Knowledge Graphs: Use Cases, Requirements, Evaluation, and Decision Support

Abstract
Our culture, history and world are in constant motion, continuously shaped by the flow of time, evolving narratives, and shifting relationships. Capturing this temporal complexity within cultural heritage (CH) knowledge graphs is essential for preserving the dynamic nature of human heritage. However, standard RDF predicates fail to effectively model the temporal aspects of cultural data, such as changing facts, evolving relationships, and temporal concepts. Over the past two decades, a variety of RDF-based approaches have been proposed to address this limitation, yet guidance is missing on which method best suits specific CH contexts. This paper presents a systematic evaluation of temporal RDF modelling approaches from a CH perspective. Based on an analysis of real-world CH use cases, core temporal requirements are identified that reflect both modelling expressivity and practical concerns. Six prominent approaches - RDF*, tRDF, Named Graphs, Singleton Property, N-ary Relations, and 4D Fluents - are assessed across these requirements. Our findings reveal that no single solution fits all scenarios, but suitable approaches can be selected based on project-specific priorities. To support practitioners, a decision-support tool is introduced to guide them in selecting the most suitable extension for their specific needs. This work provides practical guidance for CH modelling and contributes to the broader development of temporally aware Linked Data.

ε-Distance via Lévy-Prokhorov Lifting

Abstract
The most studied and accepted pseudometric for probabilistic processes is one based on the Kantorovich distance between distributions. It comes with many theoretical and motivating results, in particular it is the fixpoint of a given functional and defines a functor on (complete) pseudometric spaces. It is also the foundation for a categorical lifting of pseudometrics. Other notions of behavioural pseudometrics have also been proposed, one of them (ε-distance) based on ε-bisimulation. ε-Distance has the advantages that it is intuitively easy to understand, it relates systems that are conceptually close (for example, an imperfect implementation is close to its specification), and it comes equipped with a natural notion of ε-coupling. Finally, this distance is easy to compute. We show that ε-distance is also the greatest fixpoint of a functional and provides a functor. The latter is obtained by replacing the Kantorovich distance in the lifting functor with the Lévy-Prokhorov distance. In addition, we show that ε-couplings and ε-bisimulations have an appealing coalgebraic characterization.

Visualizing Treewidth

Abstract
A witness drawing of a graph is a visualization that clearly shows a given property of a graph. We study and implement various drawing paradigms for witness drawings to clearly show that graphs have bounded pathwidth or treewidth. Our approach draws the tree decomposition or path decomposition as a tree of bags, with induced subgraphs shown in each bag, and with "tracks" for each graph vertex connecting its copies in multiple bags. Within bags, we optimize the vertex layout to avoid crossings of edges and tracks. We implement a visualization prototype for crossing minimization using dynamic programming for graphs of small width and heuristic approaches for graphs of larger width. We introduce a taxonomy of drawing styles, which render the subgraph for each bag as an arc diagram with one or two pages or as a circular layout with straight-line edges, and we render tracks either with straight lines or with orbital-radial paths.

On the Use of Concept Maps to Improve Student Skills in an Introductory Object-Oriented Analysis and Design Course

Abstract
This paper presents an ongoing work on the application of concept maps to teaching an introductory Object-Oriented Analysis and Design course for Computer Science students. There exist previous works that introduce the concept map model in these object-oriented courses. However, these works do not usually go deeply enough into the transition from concept maps to static class diagrams. Although concept maps present some clear advantages when defining the abstractions present in object-oriented software modeling, some drawbacks may also appear if the transformation from these maps to class diagrams when the task is carried out through simplistic rules. In this paper we propose an approach, which is illustrated through a use case, to transition from a concept map to a static class diagram in a more realistic way.

Enhancing Creative Thinking Through Gamification in LMS Environments

Abstract
Gamification in educational context involves applying game design elements and principles to enhance the learning experience. By incorporating the motivational features of games, it aims to engage students and support educational goals. The work presented in this article is part of ThinkGame Erasmus+ project. The project’s goal is to encourage the use of Learning Management System (LMS) tools, such as lessons, wikis, and online tests to create gamified experiences in programming classes. These innovative strategies are intended to boost student motivation and creativity by incorporating compelling narratives, adaptable challenges, collaborative tasks, and continuous feedback. Another important challenge addressed in the project was fostering creativity among teachers, encouraging them to transform conventional, non-gamified resources into engaging and thought-provoking activities for students. A case study composed of ten gamified experiences was developed at Polytechnic Institute of Bragança, one of the project partners, during one semester in Imperative Programming subject.

The Complexity of Separability for Semilinear Sets and Parikh Automata

Abstract
In a separability problem, we are given two sets K and L from a class 𝒞, and we want to decide whether there exists a set S from a class 𝒮 such that K ⊆ S and S ∩ L = ∅. In this case, we speak of separability of sets in 𝒞 by sets in 𝒮. We study two types of separability problems. First, we consider separability of semilinear sets (i.e. subsets of ℕ^d for some d) by sets definable by quantifier-free monadic Presburger formulas (or equivalently, the recognizable subsets of ℕ^d). Here, a formula is monadic if each atom uses at most one variable. Second, we consider separability of languages of Parikh automata by regular languages. A Parikh automaton is a machine with access to counters that can only be incremented, and have to meet a semilinear constraint at the end of the run. Both of these separability problems are known to be decidable with elementary complexity. Our main results are that both problems are coNP-complete. In the case of semilinear sets, coNP-completeness holds regardless of whether the input sets are specified by existential Presburger formulas, quantifier-free formulas, or semilinear representations. Our results imply that recognizable separability of rational subsets of Σ* × ℕ^d (shown decidable by Choffrut and Grigorieff) is coNP-complete as well. Another application is that regularity of deterministic Parikh automata (where the target set is specified using a quantifier-free Presburger formula) is coNP-complete as well.

Explainability is a Game for Probabilistic Bisimilarity Distances

Abstract
We revisit a game from the literature that characterizes the probabilistic bisimilarity distances of a labelled Markov chain. We illustrate how an optimal policy of the game can explain these distances. Like the games that characterize bisimilarity and probabilistic bisimilarity, the game is played on pairs of states and matches transitions of those states. To obtain more convincing and interpretable explanations than those provided by generic optimal policies, we restrict to optimal policies that delay reaching observably inequivalent state pairs for as long as possible (called 1-maximal) while quickly reaching equivalent ones (called 0-minimal). We present iterative algorithms that compute 1-maximal and 0-minimal policies and prove an exponential lower bound for the number of iterations of the algorithm that computes 1-maximal policies.

An Efficient Data Structure and Algorithm for Long-Match Query in Run-Length Compressed BWT

Abstract
String matching problems in bioinformatics are typically for finding exact substring matches between a query and a reference text. Previous formulations often focus on maximum exact matches (MEMs). However, multiple occurrences of substrings of the query in the text that are long enough but not maximal may not be captured by MEMs. Such long matches can be informative, especially when the text is a collection of similar sequences such as genomes. In this paper, we describe a new type of match between a pattern and a text that aren't necessarily maximal in the query, but still contain useful matching information: locally maximal exact matches (LEMs). There are usually a large amount of LEMs, so we only consider those above some length threshold ℒ. These are referred to as long LEMs. The purpose of long LEMs is to capture substring matches between a query and a text that are not necessarily maximal in the pattern but still long enough to be important. Therefore efficient long LEMs finding algorithms are desired for these datasets. However, these datasets are too large to query on traditional string indexes. Fortunately, these datasets are very repetitive. Recently, compressed string indexes that take advantage of the redundancy in the data but retain efficient querying capability have been proposed as a solution. We therefore give an efficient algorithm for computing all the long LEMs of a query and a text in a BWT runs compressed string index. We describe an O(m+occ) expected time algorithm that relies on an O(r) words space string index for outputting all long LEMs of a pattern with respect to a text given the matching statistics of the pattern with respect to the text. Here m is the length of the query, occ is the number of long LEMs outputted, and r is the number of runs in the BWT of the text. The O(r) space string index we describe relies on an adaptation of the move data structure by Nishimoto and Tabei. We are able to support LCP[i] queries in constant time given SA[i]. In other words, we answer PLCP[i] queries in constant time. These PLCP queries enable the efficient long LEM query. Long LEMs may provide useful similarity information between a pattern and a text that MEMs may ignore. This information is particularly useful in pangenome and biobank scale haplotype panel contexts.

Elements for Weighted Answer-Set Programming

Abstract
Logic programs, more specifically, answer-set programs, can be annotated with probabilities on facts to express uncertainty. We address the problem of propagating weight annotations on facts (e.g. probabilities) of an answer-set program to its stable models, and from there to events (defined as sets of atoms) in a dataset over the program’s domain. We propose a novel approach which is algebraic in the sense that it relies on an equivalence relation over the set of events. Uncertainty is then described as polynomial expressions over variables. We propagate the weight function in the space of models and events, rather than doing so within the syntax of the program. As evidence that our approach is sound, we show that certain facts behave as expected. Our approach allows us to investigate weight annotated programs and to determine how suitable a given one is for modeling a given dataset containing events. It’s core is illustrated by a running example and the encoding of a Bayesian network.

Beyond the Score: Exploring the Intersection Between Sociodemographics and Linguistic Features in English (L1) Writing Placement

Abstract
This study examines the intersection of sociodemographic characteristics, linguistic features, and writing placement outcomes at a community college in the United States of America. It focuses on 210 anonymized writing samples from native English speakers (L1) that were automatically classified by Accuplacer and independently assessed by two trained raters. Disparities across gender and race using 40 top-ranked linguistic features selected from Coh-Metrix, CTAP, and Developmental Education-Specific (DES) sets were analyzed. Three statistical tests were used: one-way ANOVA, Tukey’s HSD, and Chi-square. ANOVA results showed racial differences in nine linguistic features, especially those tied to syntactic complexity, discourse markers, and lexical precision. Gender differences were more limited, with only one feature reaching significance (Positive Connectives, p = 0.007). Tukey’s HSD pairwise tests showed no significant gender group variation but revealed sensitivity in DES features when comparing racial groups. Chi-square analysis indicated no significant association between gender and placement outcomes but suggested a possible link between race and human-assigned levels (χ² = 9.588, p = 0.048). These findings suggest that while automated systems assess general writing skills, human-devised linguistic features and demographic insights can support more equitable placement practices for all students entering college-level programs.

Mining GitHub Software Repositories to Look for Programming Language Cocktails

Abstract
In light of specific development needs, it is common to concurrently apply different technologies to build complex applications. Given that lowering risks, costs, and other negative factors, while improving their positive counterparts is paramount to a better development environment, it becomes relevant to find out what technologies work best for each intended purpose in a project. In order to reach these findings, it is necessary to analyse and study the technologies applied in these projects and how they interconnect and relate to each other. The theory behind Programming Cocktails (meaning the set of programming technologies - Ingredients - that are used to develop complex systems) can support these analysis. However, due to the sheer amount of data that is required to construct and analyse these Cocktails, it becomes unsustainable to manually obtain them. From the desire to accelerate this process comes the need for a tool that automates the data collection and its conversion into an appropriate format for analysis. As such, the project proposed in this paper revolves around the development of a web-scraping application that can generate Cocktail Identity Cards (CIC) from source code repositories hosted on GitHub. Said CICs contain the Ingredients (programming languages, libraries and frameworks) used in the corresponding GitHub repository and follow the ontology previously established in a larger research project to model each Programming Cocktail. This paper presents a survey of current Source Version Control Systems (SVCSs) and web-scrapping technologies, an overview of Programming Cocktails and its current foundations, and the design of a tool that can automate the gathering of CICs from GitHub repositories.

A DSL for Swarm Intelligence Algorithms

Abstract
We propose a domain-specific language to simplify the expression of Swarm Intelligence algorithms. These algorithms are typically introduced through metaphors, requiring practitioners to manually translate them into low-level implementations.This process can obscure intent and hinder reproducibility. The proposed DSL bridges this gap by capturing algorithmic behavior at a higher level of abstraction. We demonstrate its expressiveness in a few lines of code and evaluate its feasibility through a reference implementation. A discussion is presented that includes empirical comparisons with traditional implementations and future directions of the proposed DSL.

CVTool: Automating Content Variants of CVs

Abstract
As academic professionals, we frequently need to create different versions of our CVs for project applications, career evaluations, or competitions. These versions may be chronologically structured or skill-oriented, covering specific periods and written in various languages. Even when using a LaTeX document as a base, numerous modifications are required each time an updated CV version is requested for a specific purpose. The primary objective of the project reported in this paper is to design and implement a web-based system (CVTool) that simplifies the management of LaTeX CV content while ensuring flexibility. The CVTool is built on a domain-specific language that enables the creation of various filters, allowing for the automatic content adjustment while preserving the original format. Information is extracted from the LaTeX document, and users can specify the sections, dates, skills they want to highlight, and the language in which the CV should be generated. Since the approach relies on an internal data representation derived from the original LaTeX document, it offers users the flexibility to manage content efficiently and extract the necessary information with ease.
