Smoothed Analysis of Online Metric Matching with a Single Sample: Beyond Metric Distortion

Abstract
In the online metric matching problem, n servers and n requests lie in a metric space. Servers are available upfront, and requests arrive sequentially. An arriving request must be matched immediately and irrevocably to an available server, incurring a cost equal to their distance. The goal is to minimize the total matching cost. We study this problem in [0, 1]^d with the Euclidean metric, when servers are adversarial and requests are independently drawn from distinct distributions that satisfy a mild smoothness condition. Our main result is an O(1)-competitive algorithm for d ≠ 2 that requires no distributional knowledge, relying only on a single sample from each request distribution. To our knowledge, this is the first algorithm to achieve an o(log n) competitive ratio for non-trivial metrics beyond the i.i.d. setting. Our approach bypasses the Ω(log n) barrier introduced by probabilistic metric embeddings: instead of analyzing the embedding distortion and the algorithm separately, we directly bound the cost of the algorithm on the target metric space of a simple deterministic embedding. We then combine this analysis with lower bounds on the offline optimum for Euclidean metrics, derived via majorization arguments, to obtain our guarantees.

On Solving Asymmetric Diagonally Dominant Linear Systems in Sublinear Time

Abstract
We initiate a study of solving a row/column diagonally dominant (RDD/CDD) linear system 𝐌x = b in sublinear time, with the goal of estimating t^{⊤}x^{∗} for a given vector t ∈ ℝⁿ and a specific solution x^{∗}. This setting naturally generalizes the study of sublinear-time solvers for symmetric diagonally dominant (SDD) systems [Andoni-Krauthgamer-Pogrow, ITCS 2019] to the asymmetric case, which has remained underexplored despite extensive work on nearly-linear-time solvers for RDD/CDD systems. Our first contributions are characterizations of the problem’s mathematical structure. We express a solution x^{∗} via a Neumann series, prove its convergence, and upper bound the truncation error on this series through a novel quantity of 𝐌, termed the maximum p-norm gap. This quantity generalizes the spectral gap of symmetric matrices and captures how the structure of 𝐌 governs the problem’s computational difficulty. For systems with bounded maximum p-norm gap, we develop a collection of algorithmic results for locally approximating t^{⊤}x^{∗} under various scenarios and error measures. We derive these results by adapting the techniques of random-walk sampling, local push, and their bidirectional combination, which have proved powerful for special cases of solving RDD/CDD systems, particularly estimating PageRank and effective resistance on graphs. Our general framework yields deeper insights, extended results, and improved complexity bounds for these problems. Notably, our perspective provides a unified understanding of Forward Push and Backward Push, two fundamental approaches for estimating random-walk probabilities on graphs. Our framework also inherits the hardness results for sublinear-time SDD solvers and local PageRank computation, establishing lower bounds on the maximum p-norm gap or the accuracy parameter. We hope that our work opens the door for further study into sublinear solvers, local graph algorithms, and directed spectral graph theory.

Mining Inter-Document Argument Structures in Scientific Papers for an Argument Web

Abstract
In Argument Mining, predicting argumentative relations between texts (or spans) remains one of the most challenging aspects, even more so in the cross-document setting. This paper makes three key contributions to advance research in this domain. We first extend an existing dataset, the Sci-Arg corpus, by annotating it with explicit inter-document argumentative relations, thereby allowing arguments to be distributed over several documents forming an Argument Web; these new annotations are published using Semantic Web technologies (RDF, OWL). Second, we explore and evaluate three automated approaches for predicting these inter-document argumentative relations, establishing critical baselines on the new dataset. We find that a simple classifier based on discourse indicators with access to context outperforms neural methods. Third, we conduct a comparative analysis of these approaches for both intra- and inter-document settings, identifying statistically significant differences in results that indicate the necessity of distinguishing between these two scenarios. Our findings highlight significant challenges in this complex domain and open crucial avenues for future research on the Argument Web of Science, particularly for those interested in leveraging Semantic Web technologies and knowledge graphs to understand scholarly discourse. With this, we provide the first stepping stones in the form of a benchmark dataset, three baseline methods, and an initial analysis for a systematic exploration of this field relevant to the Web of Data and Science.

PIPQ: Strict Insert-Optimized Concurrent Priority Queue

Abstract
This paper presents PIPQ, a strict and linearizable concurrent priority queue whose design differs from existing solutions in literature because it focuses on enabling parallelism of insert operations as opposed to accelerating delete-min operations, as traditionally done. In a nutshell, PIPQ’s structure includes two levels: the worker level and the leader level. The worker level provides per-thread data structures enabling fast and parallel insertions. The leader level contains the highest priority elements in the priority queue and can thus serve delete-min operations. Our evaluation, which includes an exploration of different data access patterns, operation mixes, runtime settings, and an integration into a graph-based application, shows that PIPQ outperforms competitors in a variety of cases, especially with insert-dominant workloads.

Resilience in Knowledge Graph Embeddings

Abstract
In recent years, knowledge graphs have gained interest and witnessed widespread applications in various domains, such as information retrieval, question-answering, recommendation systems, amongst others. Large-scale knowledge graphs to this end have demonstrated their utility in effectively representing structured knowledge. To further facilitate the application of machine learning techniques, knowledge graph embedding models have been developed. Such models can transform entities and relationships within knowledge graphs into vectors. However, these embedding models often face challenges related to noise, missing information, distribution shift, adversarial attacks, etc. This can lead to sub-optimal embeddings and incorrect inferences, thereby negatively impacting downstream applications. While the existing literature has focused so far on adversarial attacks on KGE models, the challenges related to the other critical aspects remain unexplored. In this paper, we, first of all, give a unified definition of resilience, encompassing several factors such as generalisation, in-distribution generalization, distribution adaption, and robustness. After formalizing these concepts for machine learning in general, we define them in the context of knowledge graphs. To find the gap in the existing works on resilience in the context of knowledge graphs, we perform a systematic survey, taking into account all these aspects mentioned previously. Our survey results show that most of the existing works focus on a specific aspect of resilience, namely robustness. After categorizing such works based on their respective aspects of resilience, we discuss the challenges and future research directions.

On-Chain Decentralized Learning and Cost-Effective Inference for DeFi Attack Mitigation

Abstract
Billions of dollars are lost every year in DeFi platforms by transactions exploiting business logic or accounting vulnerabilities. Existing defenses focus on static code analysis, public mempool screening, attacker contract detection, or trusted off-chain monitors, none of which prevents exploits submitted through private relays or malicious contracts that execute within the same block. We present the first decentralized, fully on-chain learning framework that: (i) performs gas-prohibitive computation on Layer-2 to reduce cost, (ii) propagates verified model updates to Layer-1, and (iii) enables gas-bounded, low-latency inference inside smart contracts. A novel Proof-of-Improvement (PoIm) protocol governs the training process and verifies each decentralized micro update as a self-verifying training transaction. Updates are accepted by PoIm only if they demonstrably improve at least one core metric (e.g., accuracy, F1-score, precision, or recall) on a public benchmark without degrading any of the other core metrics, while adversarial proposals get financially penalized through an adaptable test set for evolving threats. We develop quantization and loop-unrolling techniques that enable inference for logistic regression, SVM, MLPs, CNNs, and gated RNNs (with support for formally verified decision tree inference) within the Ethereum block gas limit, while remaining bit-exact to their off-chain counterparts, formally proven in Z3. We curate 298 unique real-world exploits (2020 - 2025) with 402 exploit transactions across eight EVM chains, collectively responsible for $3.74 B in losses. We demonstrate that on-chain ML governed by PoIm detects previously unseen attacks with over 97% attack detection accuracy and 82.0% F1. A single inference, such as one made via an external call, typically incurs zero cost. Fully on-chain inference consumes 57,603 gas (≈ $0.18) for linear models, 143,647 gas (≈ $0.49) for CNN(F2, K1), and 506,397 gas (≈ $1.77) for CNN(F8, K4) on L1 (e.g., Ethereum). Our results show that practical and continually evolving DeFi defenses can be embedded directly in protocol logic without trusted guardians, and our solution achieves highly cost-effective protection while filling a critical gap between vulnerability scanners and real-time transaction screening.

Toward an Earth-Independent System for EVA Mission Planning: Integrating Physical Models, Domain Knowledge, and Agentic RAG to Provide Explainable LLM-Based Decision Support

Abstract
We propose a unified framework for an Earth‑independent AI system that provides explainable, context‑aware decision support for EVA mission planning by integrating six core components: a fine‑tuned EVA domain LLM, a retrieval‑augmented knowledge base, a short-term memory store, physical simulation models, an agentic orchestration layer, and a multimodal user interface. To ground our design, we analyze the current roles and substitution potential of the Mission Control Center - identifying which procedural and analytical functions can be automated onboard while preserving human oversight for experiential and strategic tasks. Building on this framework, we introduce RASAGE (Retrieval & Simulation Augmented Guidance Agent for Exploration), a proof‑of‑concept toolset that combines Microsoft Phi‑4‑mini‑instruct with a FAISS (Facebook AI Similarity Search)‑powered EVA knowledge base and custom A* path planning and hypogravity metabolic models to generate grounded, traceable EVA plans. We outline a staged validation strategy to evaluate improvements in route efficiency, metabolic prediction accuracy, anomaly response effectiveness, and crew trust under realistic communication delays. Our findings demonstrate the feasibility of replicating key Mission Control functions onboard, enhancing crew autonomy, reducing cognitive load, and improving safety for deep‑space exploration missions.

Non-Adaptive Evaluation of k-of- n Functions: Tight Gap and a Unit-Cost PTAS

Abstract
We consider the Stochastic Boolean Function Evaluation (SBFE) problem in the well-studied case of k-of-n functions: There are independent Boolean random variables x_1,… ,x_n where each variable i has a known probability p_i of taking value 1, and a known cost c_i that can be paid to find out its value. The value of the function is 1 iff there are at least k 1s among the variables. The goal is to efficiently compute a strategy that, at minimum expected cost, tests the variables until the function value is determined. While an elegant polynomial-time exact algorithm is known when tests can be made adaptively, we focus on the non-adaptive variant, for which much less is known. First, we show a clean and tight lower bound of 2 on the adaptivity gap, i.e., the worst-case multiplicative loss in the objective function caused by disallowing adaptivity, of the problem. This improves the tight lower bound of 3/2 for the unit-cost variant. Second, we give a PTAS for computing the best non-adaptive strategy in the unit-cost case, the first PTAS for an SBFE problem. At the core, our scheme establishes a novel notion of two-sided dominance (w.r.t. the optimal solution) by guessing so-called milestone tests for a set of carefully chosen buckets of tests. To turn this technique into a polynomial-time algorithm, we use a decomposition approach paired with a random-shift argument.

In-Browser C++ Interpreter for Lightweight Intelligent Programming Learning Environments

Abstract
The paper presents a browser native C++ interpreter integrated into an AI-assisted educational platform designed to enhance programming learning in formal education. The interpreter leverages Parsing Expression Grammars (PEG) to generate Abstract Syntax Trees (AST) and executes C++ code using a TypeScript-based runtime. The system supports key C++ features, including pointer arithmetic, function overloading, and namespace resolution, and emulates memory management via reference-counted JavaScript objects. Integrated within a web-based learning environment, it provides automated feedback, error explanations, and code quality evaluations. The evaluation involved 4582 students in three difficulty levels and feedback from 14 teachers. The results include high system usability scale (SUS) scores (avg. 83.5) and WBLT learning effectiveness scores (avg. 4.58/5). Interpreter performance testing in 65 cases averaged under 10 ms per task, confirming its practical applicability to school curricula. The system supports SCORM and PWA deployment, enabling LMS-independent usage. The work introduces a technical innovation in browser-based C++ execution and a scalable framework for LLM-enhanced programming pedagogy.

Elimination Distance to Dominated Clusters

Abstract
In the Dominated Cluster Deletion problem, we are given an undirected graph G and integers k and d and the question is to decide whether there exists a set of at most k vertices whose removal results in a graph in which each connected component has a dominating set of size at most d. In the Elimination Distance to Dominated Clusters problem, we are again given an undirected graph G and integers k and d and the question is to decide whether we can recursively delete vertices up to depth k such that each remaining connected component has a dominating set of size at most d. Bentert et al. [Bentert et al., MFCS 2024] recently provided an almost complete classification of the parameterized complexity of Dominated Cluster Deletion with respect to the parameters k, d, c, and Δ, where c and Δ are the degeneracy, and the maximum degree of the input graph, respectively. In particular, they provided a non-uniform algorithm with running time f(k,d)⋅ n^{𝒪(d)}. They left as an open problem whether the problem is fixed-parameter tractable with respect to the parameter k + d + c. We provide a uniform algorithm running in time f(k,d)⋅ n^{𝒪(d)} for both Dominated Cluster Deletion and Elimination Distance to Dominated Clusters. We furthermore show that both problems are FPT when parameterized by k+d+𝓁, where 𝓁 is the semi-ladder index of the input graph, a parameter that is upper bounded and may be much smaller than the degeneracy c, positively answering the open question of Bentert et al. We further complete the picture by providing an almost full classification for the parameterized complexity and kernelization complexity of Elimination Distance to Dominated Clusters. The one difficult base case that remains open is whether Treedepth (the case d = 0) is NP-hard on graphs of bounded maximum degree.

DiVerG: Scalable Distance Index for Validation of Paired-End Alignments in Sequence Graphs

Abstract
Determining the distance between two loci within a genomic region is a recurrent operation in various tasks in computational genomics. A notable example of this task arises in paired-end read mapping as a form of validation of distances between multiple alignments. While straightforward for a single genome, graph-based reference structures render the operation considerably more involved. Given the sheer number of such queries in a typical read mapping experiment, an efficient algorithm for answering distance queries is crucial. In this paper, we introduce DiVerG, a compact data structure as well as a fast and scalable algorithm, for constructing distance indexes for general sequence graphs on multi-core CPU and many-core GPU architectures. DiVerG is based on PairG [Jain et al., 2019], but overcomes the limitations of PairG by exploiting the extensive potential for improvements in terms of scalability and space efficiency. As a consequence, DiVerG can process substantially larger datasets, such as whole human genomes, which are unmanageable by PairG. DiVerG offers faster index construction time and consistently faster query time with gains proportional to the size of the underlying compact data structure. We demonstrate that our method performs favorably on multiple real datasets at various scales. DiVerG achieves superior performance over PairG; e.g. resulting to 2.5-4x speed-up in query time, 44-340x smaller index size, and 3-50x faster construction time for the genome graph of the MHC region, as a particularly variable region of the human genome. Large Multi-Modal Model Cartographic Map Comprehension for Textual Locality Georeferencing

Abstract
Millions of biological sample records collected in the last few centuries archived in natural history collections are un-georeferenced. Georeferencing complex locality descriptions associated with these collection samples is a highly labour-intensive task collection agencies struggle with. None of the existing automated methods exploit maps that are an essential tool for georeferencing complex relations. We present preliminary experiments and results of a novel method that exploits multi-modal capabilities of recent Large Multi-Modal Models (LMM). This method enables the model to visually contextualize spatial relations it reads in the locality description. We use a grid-based approach to adapt these auto-regressive models for this task in a zero-shot setting. Our experiments conducted on a small manually annotated dataset show impressive results for our approach (∼1 km Average distance error) compared to uni-modal georeferencing with Large Language Models and existing georeferencing tools. The paper also discusses the findings of the experiments in light of an LMM’s ability to comprehend fine-grained maps. Motivated by these results, a practical framework is proposed to integrate this method into a georeferencing workflow.

Assessing Map Reproducibility with Visual Question-Answering: An Empirical Evaluation

Abstract
Reproducibility is a key principle of the modern scientific method. Maps, as an important means of communicating scientific results in GIScience and across disciplines, should be reproducible. Currently, map reproducibility assessment is done manually, which makes the assessment process tedious and time-consuming, ultimately limiting its efficiency. Hence, this work explores the extent to which Visual Question-Answering (VQA) can be used to automate some tasks relevant to map reproducibility assessment. We selected five state-of-the-art vision language models (VLMs) and followed a three-step approach to evaluate their ability to discriminate between maps and other images, interpret map content, and compare two map images using VQA. Our results show that current VLMs already possess map-reading capabilities and demonstrate understanding of spatial concepts, such as cardinal directions, geographic scope, and legend interpretation. Our paper demonstrates the potential of using VQA to support reproducibility assessment and highlights the outstanding issues that need to be addressed to achieve accurate, trustworthy map descriptions, thereby reducing the time and effort required by human evaluators.

Enriching Location Representation with Detailed Semantic Information

Abstract
Spatial representations that capture both structural and semantic characteristics of urban environments are essential for urban modeling. Traditional spatial embeddings often prioritize spatial proximity while underutilizing fine-grained contextual information from places. To address this limitation, we introduce CaLLiPer+, an extension of the CaLLiPer model that systematically integrates Point-of-Interest (POI) names alongside categorical labels within a multimodal contrastive learning framework. We evaluate its effectiveness on two downstream tasks - land use classification and socioeconomic status distribution mapping - demonstrating consistent performance gains of 4% to 11% over baseline methods. Additionally, we show that incorporating POI names enhances location retrieval, enabling models to capture complex urban concepts with greater precision. Ablation studies further reveal the complementary role of POI names and the advantages of leveraging pretrained text encoders for spatial representations. Overall, our findings highlight the potential of integrating fine-grained semantic attributes and multimodal learning techniques to advance the development of urban foundation models.

BERT4Traj: Transformer-Based Trajectory Reconstruction for Sparse Mobility Data

Abstract
Understanding human mobility is essential for applications in public health, transportation, and urban planning. However, mobility data often suffers from sparsity due to limitations in data collection methods, such as infrequent GPS sampling or call detail record (CDR) data that only capture locations during communication events. To address this challenge, we propose BERT4Traj, a transformer-based model that reconstructs complete mobility trajectories by predicting hidden visits in sparse movement sequences. Inspired by BERT’s masked language modeling objective and self-attention mechanisms, BERT4Traj leverages spatial embeddings, temporal embeddings, and contextual background features such as demographics and anchor points. We evaluate BERT4Traj on real-world CDR and GPS datasets collected in Kampala, Uganda, demonstrating that our approach significantly outperforms traditional models such as Markov Chains, KNN, RNNs, and LSTMs. Our results show that BERT4Traj effectively reconstructs detailed and continuous mobility trajectories, enhancing insights into human movement patterns.
