A Survey of Real-Time Support, Analysis, and Advancements in ROS 2

Abstract
The Robot Operating System 2 (ROS 2) has emerged as a relevant middleware framework for robotic applications, offering modularity, distributed execution, and communication. In the last six years, ROS 2 has drawn increasing attention from the real-time systems community and industry. This survey presents a comprehensive overview of research efforts that analyze, enhance, and extend ROS 2 to support real-time execution. We first provide a detailed description of the internal scheduling mechanisms of ROS 2 and its layered architecture, including the interaction with DDS-based communication and other communication middleware. We then review key contributions from the literature, covering timing analysis for both single- and multi-threaded executors, metrics such as response time, reaction time, and data age, and different communication modes. The survey also discusses community-driven enhancements to the ROS 2 runtime, including new executor algorithm designs, real-time GPU management, and microcontroller support via micro-ROS. Furthermore, we summarize techniques for bounding DDS communication delays, message filters, and profiling tools that have been developed to support analysis and experimentation. To help systematize this growing body of work, we introduce taxonomies that classify the surveyed contributions based on different criteria. This survey aims to guide both researchers and practitioners in understanding and improving the real-time capabilities of ROS 2.

Lower Bounds on Tree Covers

Abstract
Given an n-point metric space (X,d_X), a tree cover 𝒯 is a set of |𝒯| = k trees on X such that every pair of vertices in X has a low-distortion path in one of the trees in 𝒯. Tree covers have been playing a crucial role in graph algorithms for decades, and the research focus is the construction of tree covers with small size k and distortion. When k = 1, the best distortion is known to be Θ(n). For a constant k ≥ 2, the best distortion upper bound is Õ(n^{1/k}) and the strongest lower bound is Ω(log_k n), leaving a gap to be closed. In this paper, we improve the lower bound to Ω(n^{1/(2^{k-1)}}). Our proof is a novel analysis on a structurally simple grid-like graph, which utilizes some combinatorial fixed-point theorems. We believe that they will prove useful for analyzing other tree-like data structures as well.

Resilience in Knowledge Graph Embeddings

Abstract
In recent years, knowledge graphs have gained interest and witnessed widespread applications in various domains, such as information retrieval, question-answering, recommendation systems, amongst others. Large-scale knowledge graphs to this end have demonstrated their utility in effectively representing structured knowledge. To further facilitate the application of machine learning techniques, knowledge graph embedding models have been developed. Such models can transform entities and relationships within knowledge graphs into vectors. However, these embedding models often face challenges related to noise, missing information, distribution shift, adversarial attacks, etc. This can lead to sub-optimal embeddings and incorrect inferences, thereby negatively impacting downstream applications. While the existing literature has focused so far on adversarial attacks on KGE models, the challenges related to the other critical aspects remain unexplored. In this paper, we, first of all, give a unified definition of resilience, encompassing several factors such as generalisation, in-distribution generalization, distribution adaption, and robustness. After formalizing these concepts for machine learning in general, we define them in the context of knowledge graphs. To find the gap in the existing works on resilience in the context of knowledge graphs, we perform a systematic survey, taking into account all these aspects mentioned previously. Our survey results show that most of the existing works focus on a specific aspect of resilience, namely robustness. After categorizing such works based on their respective aspects of resilience, we discuss the challenges and future research directions.

Building Trustworthy Cognitive Monitoring for Safety-Critical Human Tasks: A Phased Methodological Approach

Abstract
Operators performing high-stakes, safety-critical tasks - such as air traffic controllers, surgeons, or mission control personnel - must maintain exceptional cognitive performance under variable and often stressful conditions. This paper presents a phased methodological approach to building cognitive monitoring systems for such environments. By integrating insights from human factors research, simulation-based training, sensor technologies, and fundamental psychological principles, the proposed framework supports real-time performance assessment with minimum intrusion. The approach begins with simplified simulations and evolves towards operational contexts. Key challenges addressed include variability in workload, the effects of fatigue and stress, thus the need for adaptive monitoring for early warning support mechanisms. The methodology aims to improve situational awareness, reduce human error, and support decision-making without undermining operator autonomy. Ultimately, the work contributes to the development of resilient and transparent systems in domains where human performance is critical to safety.

Can Open Large Language Models Catch Vulnerabilities?

Abstract
As Large Language Models (LLMs) become increasingly integrated into secure software development workflows, a critical question remains unanswered: can these models not only detect insecure code but also reliably classify vulnerabilities according to standardized taxonomies? In this work, we conduct a systematic evaluation of three state-of-the-art LLMs - Llama3, Codestral, and Deepseek R1 - using a carefully filtered subset of the Big-Vul dataset annotated with eight representative Common Weakness Enumeration categories. Adopting a closed-world classification setup, we assess each model’s performance in both identifying the presence of vulnerabilities and mapping them to the correct CWE label. Our findings reveal a sharp contrast between high detection rates and markedly poor classification accuracy, with frequent overgeneralization and misclassification. Moreover, we analyze model-specific biases and common failure modes, shedding light on the limitations of current LLMs in performing fine-grained security reasoning.These insights are especially relevant in educational contexts, where LLMs are being adopted as learning aids despite their limitations. A nuanced understanding of their behaviour is essential to prevent the propagation of misconceptions among students. Our results expose key challenges that must be addressed before LLMs can be reliably deployed in security-sensitive environments.

Multipass Linear Sketches for Geometric LP-Type Problems

Abstract
LP-type problems such as the Minimum Enclosing Ball (MEB), Linear Support Vector Machine (SVM), Linear Programming (LP), and Semidefinite Programming (SDP) are fundamental combinatorial optimization problems, with many important applications in machine learning applications such as classification, bioinformatics, and noisy learning. We study LP-type problems in several streaming and distributed big data models, giving ε-approximation linear sketching algorithms with a focus on the high accuracy regime with low dimensionality d, that is, when d < (1/ε)^0.999. Our main result is an O(ds) pass algorithm with O(s(√d/ε)^{3d/s}) ⋅ poly(d, log (1/ε)) space complexity in words, for any parameter s ∈ [1, d log (1/ε)], to solve ε-approximate LP-type problems of O(d) combinatorial and VC dimension. Notably, by taking s = d log (1/ε), we achieve space complexity polynomial in d and polylogarithmic in 1/ε, presenting exponential improvements in 1/ε over current algorithms. We complement our results by showing lower bounds of (1/ε)^Ω(d) for any 1-pass algorithm solving the (1 + ε)-approximation MEB and linear SVM problems, further motivating our multi-pass approach.

Shortest Paths in Multimode Graphs

Abstract
In this work we study shortest path problems in multimode graphs, a generalization of the min-distance measure introduced by Abboud, Vassilevska W. and Wang in [SODA'16]. A multimode shortest path is the shortest path using one of multiple "modes" of transportation that cannot be combined. This represents real-world scenarios where different modes are not combinable, such as flights operated by different airline alliances. The problem arises naturally in machine learning in the context of learning with multiple embedding. More precisely, a k-multimode graph is a collection of k graphs on the same vertex set and the k-mode distance between two vertices is defined as the minimum among the distances computed in each individual graph. We focus on approximating fundamental graph parameters on these graphs, specifically diameter and radius. In undirected multimode graphs we first show an elegant linear time 3-approximation algorithm for 2-mode diameter. We then extend this idea into a general subroutine that can be used as a part of any α-approximation, and use it to construct a 2 and 2.5 approximation algorithm for 2-mode diameter. For undirected radius, we introduce a general scheme that can compute a 3-approximation of the k-mode radius for any k and runs in near linear time in the case of k = O(1). In the directed case we establish an equivalence between approximating 2-mode diameter on DAGs and approximating the min-diameter, while for general graphs we develop novel techniques and provide a linear time algorithm to determine whether the diameter is finite. We also develop many conditional fine-grained lower bounds for various multimode diameter and radius approximation problems. We are able to show that many of our algorithms are tight under popular fine-grained complexity hypotheses, including our linear time 3-approximation for 3-mode undirected diameter and radius. As part of this effort we propose the first extension to the Hitting Set Hypothesis [SODA'16], which we call the 𝓁-Hitting Set Hypothesis. We use this hypothesis to prove the first parameterized lower bound tradeoff for radius approximation algorithms.

Minimizing Recourse in an Adaptive Balls and Bins Game

Abstract
We consider a simple load-balancing game between an algorithm and an adaptive adversary. In a simplified version of this game, the adversary observes the assignment of jobs to machines and selects a machine to kill. The algorithm must then restart the jobs from the failed machine on other machines. The adversary repeats this process, observing the new assignment and eliminating another machine, and so on. The adversary aims to force the algorithm to perform many restarts, while we seek a robust algorithm that minimizes restarts regardless of the adversary’s strategy. This game was recently introduced by Bhattacharya et al. for designing a 3-spanner with low recourse against an adaptive adversary. We prove that a simple algorithm, which assigns each job to a randomly chosen live bin, incurs O(n log n) recourse against an adaptive adversary. This enables us to construct a much simpler 3-spanner with a recourse that is smaller by a factor of O(log² n) compared to the previous construction, without increasing the update time or the size of the spanner. This motivates a careful examination of the range of attacks an adaptive adversary can deploy against simple algorithms before resorting to more complex ones. As our case study demonstrates, this attack space may not be as large as it initially appears, enabling the development of robust algorithms that are both simpler and easier to analyze.

Undirected 3-Fault Replacement Path in Nearly Cubic Time

Abstract
Given a graph G = (V,E) (n = |V|, m = |E|) and two vertices s,t ∈ V, the f-fault replacement path (fFRP) problem computes for every set F of at most f edges, the distance from s to t when edges in F fail. A recent result shows that 2FRP in directed graphs can be solved in Õ(n³) time [Vassilevska Williams, Woldeghebriel, Xu 2022]. In this paper, we show a 3FRP algorithm in deterministic Õ(n³) time for undirected weighted graphs, which almost matches the size of the output. This implies that fFRP in undirected graphs can be solved in nearly optimal Õ(n^f) time for all f ≥ 3. To construct our 3FRP algorithm, we introduce an incremental distance sensitivity oracle (DSO) for undirected graphs with Õ(n²) worst-case update time, while preprocessing time, space, and query time are still Õ(n³), Õ(n²) and Õ(1), respectively, which match the static DSO [Bernstein and Karger 2009]. Here in a DSO, we can preprocess a graph so that the distance between any pair of vertices given any failed edge can be answered efficiently. From the recent result in [Peng and Rubinstein 2023], we can obtain an offline dynamic DSO from the incremental worst-case DSO, which makes the construction of our 3FRP algorithm more convenient. By the offline dynamic DSO, we can also construct a 2-fault single-source replacement path (2-fault SSRP) algorithm in Õ(n³) time, that is, from a given vertex s, we want to find the distance to any vertex t when any pair of edges fail. Thus the Õ(n³) time complexity for 2-fault SSRP is also nearly optimal. Now we know that in undirected graphs 1FRP can be solved in Õ(m) time [Nardelli, Proietti, Widmayer 2001], and 2FRP and 3FRP in undirected graphs can be solved in Õ(n³) time. In this paper, we also show that a truly subcubic algorithm for 2FRP in undirected weighted graphs does not exist under APSP hypothesis.

On Incremental Approximate Shortest Paths in Directed Graphs

Abstract
In this paper, we show new data structures maintaining approximate shortest paths in sparse directed graphs with polynomially bounded non-negative edge weights under edge insertions. We give more efficient incremental (1+ε)-approximate APSP data structures that work against an adaptive adversary: a deterministic one with Õ(m^{3/2}n^{3/4}) total update time and a randomized one with Õ(m^{4/3}n^{5/6}) total update time. For sparse graphs, these both improve polynomially upon the best-known bound against an adaptive adversary [Karczmarz and Łącki, ESA 2019]. To achieve that, building on the ideas of [Chechik and Zhang, SODA 2021] and [Kyng, Meierhans and Probst Gutenberg, SODA 2022], we show a near-optimal (1+ε)-approximate incremental SSSP data structure for a special case when all edge updates are adjacent to the source, that might be of independent interest. We also describe a very simple and near-optimal offline incremental (1+ε)-approximate SSSP data structure. While online near-linear partially dynamic SSSP data structures have been elusive so far (except for dense instances), our result excludes using certain types of impossibility arguments to rule them out. Additionally, our offline solution leads to near-optimal and deterministic all-pairs bounded-leg shortest paths data structure for sparse graphs.

Explaining Enterprise Knowledge Graphs with Large Language Models and Ontological Reasoning

Abstract
In recent times, the demand for transparency and accountability in AI-driven decisions has intensified, particularly in high-stakes domains like finance and bio-medicine. This focus on the provenance of AI-generated conclusions underscores the need for decision-making processes that are not only transparent but also readily interpretable by humans, to built trust of both users and stakeholders. In this context, the integration of state-of-the-art Large Language Models (LLMs) with logic-oriented Enterprise Knowledge Graphs (EKGs) and the broader scope of Knowledge Representation and Reasoning (KRR) methodologies is currently at the cutting edge of industrial and academic research across numerous data-intensive areas. Indeed, such a synergy is paramount as LLMs bring a layer of adaptability and human-centric understanding that complements the structured insights of EKGs. Conversely, the central role of ontological reasoning is to capture the domain knowledge, accurately handling complex tasks over a given realm of interest, and to infuse the process with transparency and a clear provenance-based explanation of the conclusions drawn, addressing the fundamental challenge of LLMs' inherent opacity and fostering trust and accountability in AI applications. In this paper, we propose a novel neuro-symbolic framework that leverages the underpinnings of provenance in ontological reasoning to enhance state-of-the-art LLMs with domain awareness and explainability, enabling them to act as natural language interfaces to EKGs.

Abstract
Knowledge Graphs (KGs) have emerged as fundamental platforms for powering intelligent decision-making and a wide range of Artificial Intelligence (AI) services across major corporations such as Google, Walmart, and AirBnb. KGs complement Machine Learning (ML) algorithms by providing data context and semantics, thereby enabling further inference and question-answering capabilities. The integration of KGs with neuronal learning (e.g., Large Language Models (LLMs)) is currently a topic of active research, commonly named neuro-symbolic AI. Despite the numerous benefits that can be accomplished with KG-based AI, its growing ubiquity within online services may result in the loss of self-determination for citizens as a fundamental societal issue. The more we rely on these technologies, which are often centralised, the less citizens will be able to determine their own destinies. To counter this threat, AI regulation, such as the European Union (EU) AI Act, is being proposed in certain regions. The regulation sets what technologists need to do, leading to questions concerning How the output of AI systems can be trusted? What is needed to ensure that the data fuelling and the inner workings of these artefacts are transparent? How can AI be made accountable for its decision-making? This paper conceptualises the foundational topics and research pillars to support KG-based AI for self-determination. Drawing upon this conceptual framework, challenges and opportunities for citizen self-determination are illustrated and analysed in a real-world scenario. As a result, we propose a research agenda aimed at accomplishing the recommended objectives.

Abstract
Large Language Models (LLMs) have taken Knowledge Representation - and the world - by storm. This inflection point marks a shift from explicit knowledge representation to a renewed focus on the hybrid representation of both explicit knowledge and parametric knowledge. In this position paper, we will discuss some of the common debate points within the community on LLMs (parametric knowledge) and Knowledge Graphs (explicit knowledge) and speculate on opportunities and visions that the renewed focus brings, as well as related research topics and challenges.

Abstract
While Knowledge Graphs (KGs) have long been used as valuable sources of structured knowledge, in recent years, KG embeddings have become a popular way of deriving numeric vector representations from them, for instance, to support knowledge graph completion and similarity search. This study surveys advances as well as open challenges and opportunities in this area. For instance, the most prominent embedding models focus primarily on structural information. However, there has been notable progress in incorporating further aspects, such as semantics, multi-modal, temporal, and multilingual features. Most embedding techniques are assessed using human-curated benchmark datasets for the task of link prediction, neglecting other important real-world KG applications. Many approaches assume a static knowledge graph and are unable to account for dynamic changes. Additionally, KG embeddings may encode data biases and lack interpretability. Overall, this study provides an overview of promising research avenues to learn improved KG embeddings that can address a more diverse range of use cases.

Abstract
Knowledge engineering is a discipline that focuses on the creation and maintenance of processes that generate and apply knowledge. Traditionally, knowledge engineering approaches have focused on knowledge expressed in formal languages. The emergence of large language models and their capabilities to effectively work with natural language, in its broadest sense, raises questions about the foundations and practice of knowledge engineering. Here, we outline the potential role of LLMs in knowledge engineering, identifying two central directions: 1) creating hybrid neuro-symbolic knowledge systems; and 2) enabling knowledge engineering in natural language. Additionally, we formulate key open research questions to tackle these directions.
