Product Structure and Treewidth of Hyperbolic Uniform Disk Graphs

Abstract
Hyperbolic uniform disk graphs (HUDGs) are intersection graphs of disks with some radius r in the hyperbolic plane, where r may be constant or depend on the number of vertices in a family of HUDGs. We show that HUDGs with constant clique number do not admit product structure, i.e., that there is no constant c such that every such graph is a subgraph of H ⊠ P for some graph H of treewidth at most c. This justifies that HUDGs are described as not having a grid-like structure in the literature, and is in contrast to unit disk graphs in the Euclidean plane, whose grid-like structure is evident from the fact that they are subgraphs of the strong product of two paths and a clique of constant size [Dvořák et al., '21, MATRIX Annals]. By allowing H to be any graph of constant treewidth instead of a path-like graph, we reject the possibility of a grid-like structure not merely by the maximum degree (which is unbounded for HUDGs) but due to their global structure. We complement this by showing that for every (sub-)constant r, HUDGs admit product structure, whereas the typical hyperbolic behavior is observed if r grows with the number of vertices. Our proof involves a family of n-vertex HUDGs with radius log n that has bounded clique number but unbounded treewidth, and one for which the ratio of treewidth and clique number is log n / log log n. Up to a log log n factor, this negatively answers a question raised by Bläsius et al. [SoCG '25] asking whether balanced separators of HUDGs with radius log n can be covered by less than log n cliques. Our results also imply that the local and layered tree-independence number of HUDGs are both unbounded, answering an open question of Dallard et al. [arXiv '25].

Near-Optimal Bounds for Parameterized Euclidean k-Means

Abstract
The k-means problem is a classic objective for modeling clustering in a metric space. Given a set of points in a metric space, the goal is to find k representative points so as to minimize the sum of the squared distances from each point to its closest representative. In this work, we study the approximability of k-means in Euclidean spaces parameterized by the number of clusters, k. In seminal works, de la Vega, Karpinski, Kenyon, and Rabani [STOC'03] and Kumar, Sabharwal, and Sen [JACM'10] showed how to obtain a (1+ε)-approximation for high-dimensional Euclidean k-means in time 2^{(k/ε)^O(1)} ⋅ dn^O(1). In this work, we introduce a new fine-grained hypothesis called Exponential Time for Expanders Hypothesis (XXH) which roughly asserts that there are no non-trivial exponential time approximation algorithms for the vertex cover problem on near perfect vertex expanders. Assuming XXH, we close the above long line of work on approximating Euclidean k-means by showing that there is no 2^{(k/ε)^{1-o(1)}} ⋅ n^O(1) time algorithm achieving a (1+ε)-approximation for k-means in Euclidean space. This lower bound is tight as it matches the algorithm given by Feldman, Monemizadeh, and Sohler [SoCG'07] whose runtime is 2^O(k/ε) + O(ndk). Furthermore, assuming XXH, we show that the seminal O(n^{kd+1}) runtime exact algorithm of Inaba, Katoh, and Imai [SoCG'94] for k-means is optimal for small values of k.

Almost-Optimal Upper and Lower Bounds for Clustering in Low Dimensional Euclidean Spaces

Abstract
The k-median and k-means clustering objectives are classic objectives for modeling clustering in a metric space. Given a set of points in a metric space, the goal of the k-median (resp. k-means) problem is to find k representative points so as to minimize the sum of the distances (resp. sum of squared distances) from each point to its closest representative. Cohen-Addad, Feldmann, and Saulpic [JACM'21] showed how to obtain a (1+ε)-factor approximation in low-dimensional Euclidean metric for both the k-median and k-means problems in near-linear time 2^{(1/ε)^O(d²)} n ⋅ polylog(n) (where d is the dimension and n is the number of input points). We improve this running time to 2^{O(1/ε)^{d-1}} ⋅ n ⋅ polylog(n), and show an almost matching lower bound: under the Gap Exponential Time Hypothesis for 3-SAT, there is no 2^o(1/ε^{d-1}) n^O(1) algorithm achieving a (1+ε)-approximation for k-means.

Separators for Intersection Graphs of Spheres

Abstract
We prove the existence of optimal separators for intersection graphs of balls and spheres in any dimension d. One of our results is that if an intersection graph of n spheres in ℝ^d has m edges, then it contains a balanced separator of size O_d(m^{1/d}n^{1-2/d}). This bound is best possible in terms of the parameters involved. The same result holds if the balls and spheres are replaced by fat convex bodies and their boundaries.

Robust Algorithms for Path and Cycle Problems in Geometric Intersection Graphs

Abstract
We study the design of robust subexponential algorithms for classical connectivity problems on intersection graphs of similarly sized fat objects in ℝ^d. In this setting, each vertex corresponds to a geometric object, and two vertices are adjacent if and only if their objects intersect. We introduce a new tool for designing such algorithms, which we call a λ-linked partition. This is a partition of the vertex set into groups of highly connected vertices. Crucially, such a partition can be computed in polynomial time and does not require access to the geometric representation of the graph. We apply this framework to problems related to paths and cycles in graphs. First, we obtain the first robust ETH-tight algorithms for Hamiltonian Path and Hamiltonian Cycle, running in time 2^O(n^{1-1/d}) on intersection graphs of similarly sized fat objects in ℝ^d. This resolves an open problem of de Berg et al. [STOC 2018] and completes the study of these problems on geometric intersection graphs from the viewpoint of ETH-tight exact algorithms. We further extend our approach to the parameterized setting and design the first robust subexponential parameterized algorithm for Long Path in any fixed dimension d. More precisely, we obtain a randomized robust algorithm running in time 2^O(k^{1-1/d} log² k) n^O(1) on intersection graphs of similarly sized fat objects in ℝ^d, where k is the natural parameter. Besides λ-linked partitions, our algorithm also relies on a low-treewidth pattern covering theorem that we establish for geometric intersection graphs, which may be viewed as a refinement of a result of Marx-Pilipczuk [ESA 2017]. This structural result may be of independent interest.

Higher Hardness Results for the Reconfiguration of Odd Matchings

Abstract
We study the reconfiguration of odd matchings of combinatorial graphs. Odd matchings are matchings that cover all but one vertex of a graph. A reconfiguration step, or flip, is an operation that matches the isolated vertex and, consequently, isolates another vertex. The flip graph of odd matchings is a graph that has all odd matchings of a graph as vertices and an edge between two vertices if their corresponding matchings can be transformed into one another via a single flip. We show that computing the diameter of the flip graph of odd matchings is Π₂^p-hard. This complements a recent result by Wulf [FOCS25] that it is Π₂^p-hard to compute the diameter of the flip graph of perfect matchings where a flip swaps matching edges along a single cycle of unbounded size. Further, we show that computing the radius of the flip graph of odd matchings is Σ₃^p-hard. The respective decision problems for the diameter and the radius are also complete in the respective level of the polynomial hierarchy. This shows that computing the radius of the flip graph of odd matchings is provably harder than computing its diameter, unless the polynomial hierarchy collapses. Finally, we reduce set cover to the problem of finding shortest flip sequences. As a consequence, we show APX-hardness and that the problem cannot be approximated by a sublogarithmic factor. By doing so, we answer a question asked by Aichholzer, Brenner, Dorfer, Hoang, Perz, Rieck, and Verciani [GD25].

Triangle Detection in H-Free Graphs

Abstract
We initiate the study of combinatorial algorithms for Triangle Detection in H-free graphs. The goal is to decide if a graph that forbids a fixed pattern H as a subgraph contains a triangle, using only "combinatorial" methods that notably exclude fast matrix multiplication. Our work aims to classify which patterns admit a subcubic speedup, working towards a dichotomy theorem. On the lower bound side, we show that if H is not 3-colorable or contains more than one triangle, the complexity of the problem remains unchanged, and no combinatorial speedup is likely possible. On the upper bound side, we develop an embedding approach that results in a strongly subcubic, combinatorial algorithm for a rich class of "embeddable" patterns. Specifically, for an embeddable pattern of size k, our algorithm runs in Õ(n^{3-1/(2^{k-3)}}) time, where Õ(⋅) hides poly-logarithmic factors. This algorithm also extends to listing all the triangles within the same time bound. We supplement this main result with two generalizations: - A generalization to patterns that are embeddable up to a single obstacle that arises from a triangle in the pattern. This completes our classification for small patterns, yielding a dichotomy theorem for all patterns of size up to eight. - An H-sensitive algorithm for embeddable patterns, which runs faster when the number of copies of H is significantly smaller than the maximum possible Ω(n^{k}). Finally, we focus on the special case of odd cycles. We present specialized Triangle Detection algorithms that are very efficient: - A combinatorial algorithm for C_{2k+1}-free graphs that runs in Õ(m+n^{1+2/k}) time for every k ≥ 2, where m is the number of edges in the graph. - A combinatorial C₅-sensitive algorithm that runs in Õ(n² + n^{4/3} t^{1/3}) time, where t is the number of 5-cycles in the graph.

Binary k-Center with Missing Entries: Structure Leads to Tractability

Abstract
k-Center clustering is a fundamental classification problem, where the task is to categorize the given collection of entities into k clusters and come up with a representative for each cluster, so that the maximum distance between an entity and its representative is minimized. In this work, we focus on the setting where the entities are represented by binary vectors with missing entries, which model incomplete categorical data. This version of the problem has wide applications, from predictive analytics to bioinformatics. Our main finding is that the problem, which is notoriously hard from the classical complexity viewpoint, becomes tractable as soon as the known entries are sparse and exhibit a certain structure. Formally, we show fixed-parameter tractable algorithms for the parameters vertex cover, fracture number, and treewidth of the row-column graph, which encodes the positions of the known entries of the matrix. Additionally, we tie the complexity of the 1-cluster variant of the problem, which is famous under the name Closest String, to the complexity of solving integer linear programs with few constraints. This implies, in particular, that improving upon the running times of our algorithms would lead to more efficient algorithms for integer linear programming in general.

We develop a new characterization of potential maximal cliques of a triconnected planar graph and, using this characterization, give a polynomial delay algorithm generating all potential maximal cliques of a given triconnected planar graph. Combined with the dynamic programming algorithm due to Bouchitté and Todinca, this algorithm leads to a treewidth algorithm for general planar graphs that runs in time linear in the number of potential maximal cliques and polynomial in the number of vertices.

Simple, Strict, Proper, and Directed: Comparing Reachability in Directed and Undirected Temporal Graphs

Abstract
Temporal graphs model networks whose connections are available only at specific points in time. Several definitional subtleties - whether paths must follow strictly increasing time labels (strict vs. non-strict), whether adjacent edges cannot appear simultaneously (proper), and whether edges are forbidden to appear multiple times (simple) - give rise to different temporal graph settings. These distinctions directly impact the definition of temporal reachability, a core concept in temporal graph theory. Casteigts, Corsini, and Sarkar [TCS24] introduced a framework of equivalence notions to compare the expressive power of these settings focusing solely on undirected temporal graphs. In this work, we extend their framework to include the fundamental dimension of directed vs. undirected. Our contribution is three-fold. We (1) complete the undirected hierarchy by resolving the two open questions from [TCS24], (2) fully characterize the hierarchy of the directed settings, and (3) compare the directed and undirected settings, showing that directed temporal graphs are strictly more expressive than undirected temporal graphs in terms of reachability. Our structural results highlight both the limitations and strengths of various temporal graph settings - for example, directed + strict + simple graphs can realize every possible reachability graph, while directed + proper graphs necessarily induce at least one transitive reachability on each directed cycle. We also provide transformation procedures between temporal settings offering practical tools for transferring algorithms and hardness results across models.

Reachability of Independent Sets and Vertex Covers Under Extended Reconfiguration Rules

Abstract
In reconfiguration problems, we are given two feasible solutions to a graph problem and asked whether one can be transformed into the other via a sequence of feasible intermediate solutions under a given reconfiguration rule. While earlier work focused on modifying a single element at a time, recent studies have started examining how different rules impact computational complexity. Motivated by recent progress, we study Independent Set Reconfiguration (ISR) and Vertex Cover Reconfiguration (VCR) under the k-Token Jumping (k-TJ) and k-Token Sliding (k-TS) models. In k-TJ, up to k vertices may be replaced, while k-TS additionally requires a perfect matching between removed and added vertices. It is known that the complexity of ISR crucially depends on k, ranging from PSPACE-complete and NP-complete to polynomial-time solvable. In this paper, we further explore the gradient of computational complexity of the problems. We first show that ISR under k-TJ with k = |I| - μ remains NP-hard when μ is any fixed positive integer and the input graph is restricted to graphs of maximum degree 3 or planar graphs of maximum degree 4, where |I| is the size of feasible solutions. In addition, we prove that the problem belongs to NP not only for μ = O(1) but also for μ = O(log |I|). In contrast, we show that VCR under k-TJ is in XP when parameterized by μ = |S| - k, where |S| is the size of feasible solutions. Furthermore, we establish the PSPACE-completeness of ISR and VCR under both k-TJ and k-TS on several graph classes, for fixed k as well as superconstant k relative to the size of feasible solutions.

Coloring Reconfiguration Under Color Swapping

Abstract
In the Coloring Reconfiguration problem, we are given two proper k-colorings of a graph and asked to decide whether one can be transformed into the other by repeatedly applying a specified recoloring rule, while maintaining a proper coloring throughout. For this problem, two recoloring rules have been widely studied: single-vertex recoloring and Kempe chain recoloring. In this paper, we introduce a new rule, called color swapping, where two adjacent vertices may exchange their colors, so that the resulting coloring remains proper, and study the computational complexity of the problem under this rule. We first establish a complexity dichotomy with respect to k: the problem is solvable in polynomial time for k ≤ 2, and is PSPACE-complete for k ≥ 3. We further show that the problem remains PSPACE-complete even on restricted graph classes, including bipartite graphs, split graphs, and planar graphs of bounded degree. In contrast, we present polynomial-time algorithms for several graph classes: for paths when k = 3, for split graphs when k is fixed, and for cographs when k is arbitrary.

Star-Based Separators for Intersection Graphs of c-Colored Pseudo-Segments

Abstract
The Planar Separator Theorem, which states that any planar graph 𝒢 has a separator consisting of O(√n) nodes whose removal partitions 𝒢 into components of size at most 2n/3, is a widely used tool to obtain fast algorithms on planar graphs. Intersection graphs of disks, which generalize planar graphs, do not admit such separators. It has recently been shown that disk graphs do admit so-called clique-based separators that consist of O(√n) cliques. This result has been generalized to intersection graphs of various other types of disk-like objects. Unfortunately, segment intersection graphs do not admit small clique-based separators, because they can contain arbitrarily large bicliques. This is true even in the simple case of axis-aligned segments. In this paper we therefore introduce biclique-based separators (and, in particular, star-based separators), which are separators consisting of a small number of bicliques (or stars). We prove that any c-oriented set of n segments in the plane, where c is a constant, admits a star-based separator consisting of O(√n) stars. In fact, our result is more general, as it applies to any set of n pseudo-segments that is partitioned into c subsets such that the pseudo-segments in the same subset are pairwise disjoint. We extend our result to intersection graphs of c-oriented polygons. These results immediately lead to an almost-exact distance oracle for such intersection graphs, which has O(n√n) storage and O(√n) query time, and that can report the hop-distance between any two query nodes in the intersection graph with an additive error of at most 2. This is the first distance oracle for such types of intersection graphs that has subquadratic storage and sublinear query time and that only has an additive error.

The Tape Reconfiguration Problem and Its Consequences for Dominating Set Reconfiguration

Abstract
A dominating set of a graph G = (V,E) is a set of vertices D ⊆ V whose closed neighborhood is V, i.e., N[D] = V. We view a dominating set as a collection of tokens placed on the vertices of D. In the token sliding variant of the Dominating Set Reconfiguration problem (TS-DSR), we seek to transform a source dominating set into a target dominating set in G by sliding tokens along edges, and while maintaining a dominating set all along the transformation. TS-DSR is known to be PSPACE-complete even restricted to graphs of pathwidth w, for some non-explicit constant w and to be XL-complete parameterized by the size k of the solution. The first contribution of this article consists in using a novel approach to provide the first explicit constant for which the TS-DSR problem is PSPACE-complete, a question that was left open in the literature. From a parameterized complexity perspective, the token jumping variant of DSR, i.e., where tokens can jump to arbitrary vertices, is known to be FPT when parameterized by the size of the dominating sets on nowhere dense classes of graphs. But, in contrast, no non-trivial result was known about TS-DSR. We prove that DSR is actually much harder in the sliding model since it is XL-complete when restricted to bounded pathwidth graphs and even when parameterized by k plus the feedback vertex set number of the graph. This gives, for the first time, a difference of behavior between the complexity under token sliding and token jumping for some problem on graphs of bounded treewidth. All our results are obtained using a brand new method, based on the hardness of the so-called Tape Reconfiguration problem, a problem we believe to be of independent interest. We complement these hardness results with a positive result showing that DSR (parameterized by k) in the sliding model is FPT on planar graphs, also answering an open problem from the literature.

Linear Layouts Revisited: Stacks, Queues, and Exact Algorithms

Abstract
In spite of the extensive study of stack and queue layouts, many fundamental questions remain open concerning the complexity-theoretic frontiers for computing stack and queue layouts. A stack (resp. queue) layout places vertices along a line and assigns edges to pages so that no two edges on the same page are crossing (resp. nested). We provide three new algorithms which together substantially expand our understanding of these problems: 1) A fixed-parameter algorithm for computing minimum-page stack and queue layouts w.r.t. the vertex integrity of an n-vertex graph G. This result is motivated by an open question in the literature and generalizes the previous algorithms parameterizing by the vertex cover number of G. The proof relies on a newly developed Ramsey pruning technique. Vertex integrity intuitively measures the vertex deletion distance to a subgraph with only small connected components. 2) An n^𝒪(q 𝓁) algorithm for computing 𝓁-page stack and queue layouts of page width at most q. This is the first algorithm avoiding a double-exponential dependency on the parameters. The page width of a layout measures the maximum number of edges one needs to cross on any page to reach the outer face. 3) A 2^𝒪(n) algorithm for computing 1-page queue layouts. This improves upon the previously fastest n^𝒪(n) algorithm and can be seen as a counterpart to the recent subexponential algorithm for computing 2-page stack layouts [ICALP'24], but relies on an entirely different technique.
