Abstract
Sampling from multiple distributions so as to maximize overlap has been studied by statisticians since the 1950s. Since the 2000s, such correlated sampling from the probability simplex has been a powerful building block in disparate areas of theoretical computer science. We study a generalization of this problem to sampling sets from given vectors in the hypersimplex, i.e., outputting sets of size (at most) k ∈ [n], while maximizing the overlap of the sampled sets. Specifically, the expected difference between two output sets should be at most α times their input vectors' 𝓁₁ distance. A value of α = O(log n) is known to be achievable, due to Chen et al. (ICALP'17). We improve this factor to O(log k), independent of the ambient dimension n. Our algorithm satisfies other desirable properties, including (up to a log^* n factor) input-sparsity sampling time, logarithmic parallel depth and dynamic update time, as well as preservation of submodular objectives. Anticipating broader use of correlated sampling algorithms for the hypersimplex, we present applications of our algorithm to online paging, offline approximation of metric multi-labeling, and swift multi-scenario submodular welfare approximating reallocation.

Pseudodeterministic Algorithms for Minimum Cut Problems

Authors: Aryan Agarwala and Nithin Varma

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 362, 17th Innovations in Theoretical Computer Science Conference (ITCS 2026)

Abstract
In this paper we present efficient pseudodeterministic algorithms for both the global minimum cut and minimum s-t cut problems. The running time of our algorithm for the global minimum cut problem is asymptotically better than the fastest sequential deterministic global minimum cut algorithm (Henzinger, Li, Rao, Wang; SODA 2024). Furthermore, we implement our algorithm in streaming, PRAM, and cut-query models, where no efficient deterministic global minimum cut algorithms are known.

Linear Matroid Intersection Is in Catalytic Logspace

Authors: Aryan Agarwala, Yaroslav Alekseev, and Antoine Vinciguerra

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 362, 17th Innovations in Theoretical Computer Science Conference (ITCS 2026)

Abstract
Linear matroid intersection is an important problem in combinatorial optimization. Given two linear matroids over the same ground set, the linear matroid intersection problem asks you to find a common independent set of maximum size. The deep interest in linear matroid intersection is due to the fact that it generalises many classical problems in theoretical computer science, such as bipartite matching, edge disjoint spanning trees, rainbow spanning tree, and many more. We study this problem in the model of catalytic computation: space-bounded machines are granted access to catalytic space, which is additional working memory that is full with arbitrary data that must be preserved at the end of its computation. Although linear matroid intersection has had a polynomial time algorithm for over 50 years, it remains an important open problem to show that linear matroid intersection belongs to any well studied subclass of {P}. We address this problem for the class catalytic logspace (CL) with a polynomial time bound (CLP). Recently, Agarwala and Mertz (2025) showed that bipartite maximum matching can be computed in the class CLP ⊆ {P}. This was the first subclass of {P} shown to contain bipartite matching, and additionally the first problem outside TC¹ shown to be contained in CL. We significantly improve the result of Agarwala and Mertz by showing that linear matroid intersection can be computed in CLP.

Prior-Independent and Subgame Optimal Online Algorithms

Authors: Jason Hartline, Aleck Johnsen, and Anant Shah

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 362, 17th Innovations in Theoretical Computer Science Conference (ITCS 2026)

Abstract
This paper develops two game-theoretic notions of beyond worst-case analysis that give better than worst-case guarantees on natural inputs. We illustrate them through the finite-horizon ski-rental problem. First, we consider prior-independent design and analysis of online algorithms where, rather than choosing a worst-case input, the adversary chooses a worst-case independent and identical distribution over inputs. Prior-independent online algorithms are generally analytically intractable; instead we give a fully polynomial-time approximation scheme to compute them. Second, we consider the worst-case design of algorithms. We define "subgame optimality" which is stronger than worst-case optimality in that it requires the algorithm to take advantage of an adversary not playing a worst-case input. Algorithms that focus only on the worst case can be far from subgame optimal. Highlighting the potential improvement from these paradigms for the finite-horizon ski-rental problem, we empirically compare worst-case, subgame optimal, and prior-independent algorithms in the prior-independent framework. Finally, we analyze the structure of their decisions across input sequences: the prior-independent algorithm exhibits more extreme adaptations to observed data, in contrast with the more conservative behavior of worst-case and subgame optimal algorithms.

Parameterized Complexity of Directed Traveling Salesman Problem

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 359, 36th International Symposium on Algorithms and Computation (ISAAC 2025)

Abstract
The Directed Traveling Salesman Problem (DTSP) is a variant of the classical Traveling Salesman Problem in which the edges in the graph are directed and a vertex and edge can be visited multiple times. The goal is to find a directed closed walk of minimum length (or total weight) that visits every vertex of the given graph at least once. In a yet more general version, Directed Waypoint Routing Problem (DWRP), some vertices are marked as terminals and we are only required to visit all terminals. Furthermore, each edge has its capacity bounding the number of times this edge can be used by a solution. While both problems (and many other variants of TSP) were extensively investigated, mostly from the approximation point of view, there are surprisingly few results concerning the parameterized complexity. Our starting point is the result of Marx et al. [APPROX/RANDOM 2016] who proved that DTSP is W[1]-hard parameterized by distance to pathwidth 3. In this paper we aim to initiate the systematic complexity study of variants of Directed Traveling Salesman Problem with respect to various, mostly structural, parameters. We show that DWRP is FPT parameterized by the solution size, the feedback edge number and the vertex integrity of the underlying undirected graph. Furthermore, the problem is XP parameterized by treewidth. On the complexity side, we show that the problem is W[1]-hard parameterized by the distance to constant treedepth.

On the Spectral Expansion of Monotone Subsets of the Hypercube

Authors: Yumou Fei and Renato Ferreira Pinto Jr.

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 353, Approximation, Randomization, and Combinatorial Optimization. Algorithms and Techniques (APPROX/RANDOM 2025)

Abstract
We study the spectral gap of subgraphs of the hypercube induced by monotone subsets of vertices. For a monotone subset A ⊆ {0,1}ⁿ of density μ(A), the previous best lower bound on the spectral gap, due to Cohen [Cohen, 2016], was γ ≳ μ(A)/n², improving upon the earlier bound γ ≳ μ(A)²/n² established by Ding and Mossel [Ding and Mossel, 2014]. In this paper, we prove the optimal lower bound γ ≳ μ(A)/n. As a corollary, we improve the mixing time upper bound of the random walk on constant-density monotone sets from O(n³), as shown by Ding and Mossel, to O(n²). Along the way, we develop two new inequalities that may be of independent interest: (1) a directed L²-Poincaré inequality on the hypercube, and (2) an "approximate" FKG inequality for monotone sets.

Efficient Parallel Ising Samplers via Localization Schemes

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 353, Approximation, Randomization, and Combinatorial Optimization. Algorithms and Techniques (APPROX/RANDOM 2025)

Abstract
We introduce efficient parallel algorithms for sampling from the Gibbs distribution and estimating the partition function of Ising models. These algorithms achieve parallel efficiency, with polylogarithmic depth and polynomial total work, and are applicable to Ising models in the following regimes: (1) Ferromagnetic Ising models with external fields; (2) Ising models with interaction matrix J of operator norm ‖J‖₂ < 1. Our parallel Gibbs sampling approaches are based on localization schemes, which have proven highly effective in establishing rapid mixing of Gibbs sampling. In this work, we employ two such localization schemes to obtain efficient parallel Ising samplers: the field dynamics induced by negative-field localization, and restricted Gaussian dynamics induced by stochastic localization. This shows that localization schemes are powerful tools, not only for achieving rapid mixing but also for the efficient parallelization of Gibbs sampling.

Rapid Mixing via Coupling Independence for Spin Systems with Unbounded Degree

Authors: Xiaoyu Chen and Weiming Feng

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 353, Approximation, Randomization, and Combinatorial Optimization. Algorithms and Techniques (APPROX/RANDOM 2025)

Abstract
We develop a new framework to prove the mixing or relaxation time for the Glauber dynamics on spin systems with unbounded degree. It works for general spin systems including both 2-spin and multi-spin systems. As applications for this approach: - We prove the optimal O(n) relaxation time for the Glauber dynamics of random q-list-coloring on an n-vertices triangle-tree graph with maximum degree Δ such that q/Δ > α^⋆, where α^⋆ ≈ 1.763 is the unique positive solution of the equation α = exp(1/α). This improves the n^{1+o(1)} relaxation time for Glauber dynamics obtained by the previous work of Jain, Pham, and Vuong (2022). Besides, our framework can also give a near-linear time sampling algorithm under the same condition. - We prove the optimal O(n) relaxation time and near-optimal Õ(n) mixing time for the Glauber dynamics on hardcore models with parameter λ in balanced bipartite graphs such that λ < λ_c(Δ_L) for the max degree Δ_L in left part and the max degree Δ_R of right part satisfies Δ_R = O(Δ_L). This improves the previous result by Chen, Liu, and Yin (2023). At the heart of our proof is the notion of coupling independence which allows us to consider multiple vertices as a huge single vertex with exponentially large domain and do a "coarse-grained" local-to-global argument on spin systems. The technique works for general (multi) spin systems and helps us obtain some new comparison results for Glauber dynamics.

Sink-Free Orientations: A Local Sampler with Applications

Abstract
For sink-free orientations in graphs of minimum degree at least 3, we show that there is a deterministic approximate counting algorithm that runs in time O((n^33/ε^32)log(n/ε)), a near-linear time sampling algorithm, and a randomised approximate counting algorithm that runs in time O((n/ε)²log(n/ε)), where n denotes the number of vertices of the input graph and 0 < ε < 1 is the desired accuracy. All three algorithms are based on a local implementation of the sink popping method (Cohn, Pemantle, and Propp, 2002) under the partial rejection sampling framework (Guo, Jerrum, and Liu, 2019).

Improved Mixing of Critical Hardcore Model

Authors: Zongchen Chen and Tianhui Jiang

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 353, Approximation, Randomization, and Combinatorial Optimization. Algorithms and Techniques (APPROX/RANDOM 2025)

Abstract
The hardcore model is one of the most classic and widely studied examples of undirected graphical models. Given a graph G, the hardcore model describes a Gibbs distribution of λ-weighted independent sets of G. In the last two decades, a beautiful computational phase transition has been established at a precise threshold λ_c(Δ) where Δ denotes the maximum degree, where the task of sampling independent sets transitions from polynomial-time solvable to computationally intractable. We study the critical hardcore model where λ = λ_c(Δ) and show that the Glauber dynamics, a simple yet popular Markov chain algorithm, mixes in Õ(n^{7.44 + O(1/Δ)}) time on any n-vertex graph of maximum degree Δ ≥ 3, significantly improving the previous upper bound Õ(n^{12.88 + O(1/Δ)}) by the recent work [Chen et al., 2024]. The core property we establish in this work is that the critical hardcore model is O(√n)-spectrally independent, improving the trivial bound of n and matching the critical behavior of the Ising model. Our proof approach utilizes an online decision-making framework to study a site percolation model on the infinite (Δ-1)-ary tree, which can be interesting by itself.

Sparser Abelian High Dimensional Expanders

Abstract
The focus of this paper is the development of new elementary techniques for the construction and analysis of high dimensional expanders. Specifically, we present two new explicit constructions of Cayley high dimensional expanders (HDXs) over the abelian group 𝔽₂ⁿ. Our expansion proofs use only linear algebra and combinatorial arguments. The first construction gives local spectral HDXs of any constant dimension and subpolynomial degree exp(n^ε) for every ε > 0, improving on a construction by Golowich [Golowich, 2023] which achieves ε = 1/2. [Golowich, 2023] derives these HDXs by sparsifying the complete Grassmann poset of subspaces. The novelty in our construction is the ability to sparsify any expanding Grassmann posets, leading to iterated sparsification and much smaller degrees. The sparse Grassmannian (which is of independent interest in the theory of HDXs) serves as the generating set of the Cayley graph. Our second construction gives a 2-dimensional HDX of any polynomial degree exp(ε n) for any constant ε > 0, which is simultaneously a spectral expander and a coboundary expander. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first such non-trivial construction. We name it the Johnson complex, as it is derived from the classical Johnson scheme, whose vertices serve as the generating set of this Cayley graph. This construction may be viewed as a derandomization of the recent random geometric complexes of [Liu et al., 2023]. Establishing coboundary expansion through Gromov’s "cone method" and the associated isoperimetric inequalities is the most intricate aspect of this construction. While these two constructions are quite different, we show that they both share a common structure, resembling the intersection patterns of vectors in the Hadamard code. We propose a general framework of such "Hadamard-like" constructions in the hope that it will yield new HDXs.

Decay of Correlation for Edge Colorings When q > 3Δ

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 334, 52nd International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2025)

Abstract
We examine various perspectives on the decay of correlation for the uniform distribution over proper q-edge colorings of graphs with maximum degree Δ. First, we establish the coupling independence property when q ≥ 3Δ for general graphs. Together with the recent work of Chen, Feng, Guo, Zhang and Zou (2024), this result implies a fully polynomial-time approximation scheme (FPTAS) for counting the number of proper q-edge colorings. Next, we prove the strong spatial mixing property on trees, provided that q > (3+o(1))Δ. The strong spatial mixing property is derived from the spectral independence property of a version of the weighted edge coloring distribution, which is established using the matrix trickle-down method developed in Abdolazimi, Liu and Oveis Gharan (FOCS, 2021) and Wang, Zhang and Zhang (STOC, 2024). Finally, we show that the weak spatial mixing property holds on trees with maximum degree Δ if and only if q ≥ 2Δ-1.

Quantum Speedup for Sampling Random Spanning Trees

Authors: Simon Apers, Minbo Gao, Zhengfeng Ji, and Chenghua Liu

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 334, 52nd International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2025)

Abstract
We present a quantum algorithm for sampling random spanning trees from a weighted graph in Õ(√{mn}) time, where n and m denote the number of vertices and edges, respectively. Our algorithm has sublinear runtime for dense graphs and achieves a quantum speedup over the best-known classical algorithm, which runs in Õ(m) time. The approach carefully combines, on one hand, a classical method based on "large-step" random walks for reduced mixing time and, on the other hand, quantum algorithmic techniques, including quantum graph sparsification and a sampling-without-replacement variant of Hamoudi’s multiple-state preparation. We also establish a matching lower bound, proving the optimality of our algorithm up to polylogarithmic factors. These results highlight the potential of quantum computing in accelerating fundamental graph sampling problems.

Abstract
We show that the flip chain for non-crossing spanning trees of n+1 points in convex position mixes in time O(n⁸log n). We use connections between Fuss-Catalan structures to construct a comparison argument with a chain similar to Wilson’s lattice path chain (Wilson 2004).

Hardness of Sampling for the Anti-Ferromagnetic Ising Model on Random Graphs

Authors: Neng Huang, Will Perkins, and Aaron Potechin

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 325, 16th Innovations in Theoretical Computer Science Conference (ITCS 2025)

Abstract
We prove a hardness of sampling result for the anti-ferromagnetic Ising model on random graphs of average degree d for large constant d, proving that when the normalized inverse temperature satisfies β > 1 (asymptotically corresponding to the condensation threshold), then w.h.p. over the random graph there is no stable sampling algorithm that can output a sample close in W₂ distance to the Gibbs measure. The results also apply to a fixed-magnetization version of the model, showing that there are no stable sampling algorithms for low but positive temperature max and min bisection distributions. These results show a gap in the tractability of search and sampling problems: while there are efficient algorithms to find near optimizers, stable sampling algorithms cannot access the Gibbs distribution concentrated on such solutions. Our techniques involve extensions of the interpolation technique relating behavior of the mean field Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model to behavior of Ising models on random graphs of average degree d for large d. While previous interpolation arguments compared the free energies of the two models, our argument compares the average energies and average overlaps in the two models.
