Abstract
A polychromatic 2-coloring of a triangulation is a 2-coloring of the vertices such that no face is monochromatic. The discrepancy of a coloring is the maximum difference between the sizes of the color classes. Asayama and Matsumoto (Graphs and Combinatorics, 2022) proved that every triangulation admits a polychromatic 2-coloring with discrepancy at most (5n-16)/9, and that there exists a class of triangulations for which every polychromatic 2-coloring has discrepancy at least n/3 - 2, where n is the number of vertices. We improve the upper bound, showing that every triangulation admits a polychromatic 2-coloring with discrepancy at most (3n-16)/7 and such a 2-coloring can be computed in quadratic time. We also show a discrepancy of at most n-4M/3 for triangulations with a matching of size M. This implies, for example, that Delaunay triangulations admit a discrepancy of at most n/3. We provide a linear-time algorithm to compute a 2-coloring whose discrepancy is at most (5n-24)/7.

Abstract
Cellular networks contribute significantly to global energy demands and carbon emissions due to the millions of base stations deployed worldwide. We characterize the energy consumption of production base stations by performing fine-grained power and network telemetry measurements using off-the-shelf base stations. Our measurements reveal unique insights about how variations in temporal-usage patterns affect base station energy consumption. Based on these insights, we design EcoCell, a software-only solution that introduces energy-efficient traffic patterns in network flows. EcoCell can be implemented either as a traffic scheduler in the radio access network or as an independent middlebox. We evaluate EcoCell with five popular networked applications on a production basestation. We demonstrate savings up to 32% in dynamic energy consumption of a base station, without drops in application-level quality of experience.

Lower Bounds for Ranking-Based Pivot Rules

Abstract
The existence of a polynomial pivot rule for the simplex method for linear programming, policy iteration for Markov decision processes, and strategy improvement for parity games each are prominent open problems in their respective fields. While numerous natural candidates for efficient rules have been eliminated, all existing lower bound constructions are tailored to individual or small sets of pivot rules. We introduce a unified framework for formalizing classes of rules according to the information about the input that they rely on. Within this framework, we show lower bounds for ranking-based classes of rules that base their decisions on orderings of the improving pivot steps induced by the underlying data. Our first result is a superpolynomial lower bound for strategy improvement, obtained via a family of sink parity games, which applies to memory-based generalizations of Bland’s rule that only access the input by comparing the ranks of improving edges in some global order. Our second result is a subexponential lower bound for policy iteration, obtained via a family of Markov decision processes, which applies to memoryless rules that only access the input by comparing improving actions according to their ranks in a global order, their reduced costs, and the associated improvements in objective value. Both results carry over to the simplex method for linear programming.

Computational Hardness of Estimating Quantum Entropies via Binary Entropy Bounds

Authors: Yupan Liu

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 364, 43rd International Symposium on Theoretical Aspects of Computer Science (STACS 2026)

Abstract
We investigate the computational hardness of estimating the quantum α-Rényi entropy S^𝚁_α(ρ) = (ln Tr(ρ^α))/(1-α) and the quantum q-Tsallis entropy S^𝚃_q(ρ) = (1-Tr(ρ^q))/(q-1), both converging to the von Neumann entropy as the order approaches 1. The promise problems Quantum α-Rényi Entropy Approximation (RényiQEA_α) and Quantum q-Tsallis Entropy Approximation (TsallisQEA_q) ask whether S^𝚁_α(ρ) or S^𝚃_q(ρ), respectively, is at least τ_Y or at most τ_N, where τ_Y - τ_N is typically a positive constant. Previous hardness results cover only the von Neumann entropy (order 1) and some cases of the quantum q-Tsallis entropy, while existing approaches do not readily extend to other orders. We establish that for all positive real orders, the rank-2 variants Rank2RényiQEA_α and Rank2TsallisQEA_q are BQP-hard. Combined with prior (rank-dependent) quantum query algorithms in Wang, Guan, Liu, Zhang, and Ying (TIT 2024), Wang, Zhang, and Li (TIT 2024), and Liu and Wang (SODA 2025), our results imply: - For all real order α > 0 and 0 < q ≤ 1, LowRankRényiQEA_α and LowRankTsallisQEA_q are BQP-complete, where both are restricted versions of RényiQEA_α and TsallisQEA_q with ρ of polynomial rank. - For all real order q > 1, TsallisQEA_q is BQP-complete. Our hardness results stem from reductions based on new inequalities relating the α-Rényi or q-Tsallis binary entropies of different orders, where the reductions differ substantially from previous approaches, and the inequalities are also of independent interest.

Parametric Disjunctive Timed Networks

Abstract
We consider distributed systems with an arbitrary number of processes, modelled by timed automata that communicate through location guards: a process can take a guarded transition if at least one other process is in a given location. In this work, we introduce parametric disjunctive timed networks, where each timed automaton may contain timing parameters, i.e., unknown constants. We investigate two problems: deciding the emptiness of the set of parameter valuations for which 1) a given location is reachable for at least one process (local property), and 2) a global state is reachable where all processes are in a given location (global property). Our main positive result is that the first problem is decidable for networks of processes with a single clock and without invariants; this result holds for arbitrarily many timing parameters - a setting with few known decidability results. However, it becomes undecidable when invariants are allowed, or when considering global properties, even for systems with a single parameter. This highlights the significant expressive power of invariants in these networks. Additionally, we exhibit further decidable subclasses by restraining the syntax of guards and invariants.

Fast Re-Routing in Networks: On the Complexity of Perfect Resilience

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 361, 29th International Conference on Principles of Distributed Systems (OPODIS 2025)

Abstract
To achieve fast recovery from link failures, most modern communication networks feature fully decentralized fast re-routing mechanisms. These re-routing mechanisms rely on pre-installed static re-routing rules at the nodes (the routers), which depend only on local failure information, namely on the failed links incident to the node. Ideally, a network is perfectly resilient: the re-routing rules ensure that packets are always successfully routed to their destinations as long as the source and the destination are still physically connected in the underlying network after the failures. Unfortunately, there are examples where achieving perfect resilience is not possible. Surprisingly, only very little is known about the algorithmic aspect of when and how perfect resilience can be achieved. We investigate the computational complexity of analyzing such local fast re-routing mechanisms. Our main result is a negative one: we show that even checking whether a given set of static re-routing rules ensures perfect resilience is coNP-complete. Additionally, we investigate other fundamental variations of the problem. In particular, we show that our coNP-completeness proof also applies to scenarios where the re-routing rules have specific patterns (known as skipping in the literature). On the positive side, for scenarios where nodes do not have information about the link from which a packet arrived (the so-called in-port), we present a linear-time algorithm to realize perfect resilience whenever possible (which we show can also be determined in linear time).

Abstract
Psychometrics is the field relating to the measurement of concepts within psychology, particularly the assessment of various social and psychological dimensions in humans. The relationship between psychometric entities is critical to finding an appropriate assessment instrument, especially in the context of clinical psychology and mental healthcare in which providing the best care based on empirical evidence is crucial. We aim to model these entities, which include psychometric questionnaires and their component elements, the subject and respondent, and the latent variables being assessed. The current standard for questionnaire-based assessment relies on text-based distributions of instruments; so, a structured representation is necessary to capture these relationships to enhance accessibility and use of existing measures, encourage reuse of questionnaires and their component elements, and enable sophisticated reasoning over assessment instruments and results by increasing interoperability. We present the design process and architecture of such a domain ontology, the Psychometric Ontology of Experiences and Measures, situating it within the context of related ontologies, and demonstrating its practical utility through evaluation against a series of competency questions concerning the creation, use, and reuse of psychometric questionnaires in clinical, research, and development settings.

ε-Stationary Nash Equilibria in Multi-Player Stochastic Graph Games

Abstract
A strategy profile in a multi-player game is a Nash equilibrium if no player can unilaterally deviate to achieve a strictly better payoff. A profile is an ε-Nash equilibrium if no player can gain more than ε by unilaterally deviating from their strategy. In this work, we use ε-Nash equilibria to approximate the computation of Nash equilibria. Specifically, we focus on turn-based, multiplayer stochastic games played on graphs, where players are restricted to stationary strategies - strategies that use randomness but not memory. The problem of deciding the constrained existence of stationary Nash equilibria - where each player’s payoff must lie within a given interval - is known to be ∃ℝ-complete in such a setting (Hansen and Sølvsten, 2020). We extend this line of work to stationary ε-Nash equilibria and present an algorithm that solves the following promise problem: given a game with a Nash equilibrium satisfying the constraints, compute an ε-Nash equilibrium that ε-satisfies those same constraints - satisfies the constraints up to an ε additive error. Our algorithm runs in FNP^NP time. To achieve this, we first show that if a constrained Nash equilibrium exists, then one exists where the non-zero probabilities are at least an inverse of a double-exponential in the input. We further prove that such a strategy can be encoded using floating-point representations, as in the work of Frederiksen and Miltersen (2013), which finally gives us our FNP^NP algorithm. We further show that the decision version of the promise problem is NP-hard. Finally, we show a partial tightness result by proving a lower bound for such techniques: if a constrained Nash equilibrium exists, then there must be one where the probabilities in the strategies are double-exponentially small.

Graph Coloring Below Guarantees via Co-Triangle Packing

Authors: Shyan Akmal and Tomohiro Koana

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 359, 36th International Symposium on Algorithms and Computation (ISAAC 2025)

Abstract
In the 𝓁-Coloring problem, we are given a graph on n nodes, and tasked with determining if its vertices can be properly colored using 𝓁 colors. In this paper we study below-guarantee graph coloring, which tests whether an n-vertex graph can be properly colored using g-k colors, where g is a trivial upper bound such as n. We introduce an algorithmic framework that builds on a packing of co-triangles K₃ (independent sets of three vertices): the algorithm greedily finds co-triangles and employs a win-win analysis. If many are found, we immediately return yes; otherwise these co-triangles form a small co-triangle modulator, whose deletion makes the graph co-triangle-free. Extending the work of [Gutin et al., SIDMA 2021], who solved 𝓁-Coloring (for any 𝓁) in randomized O^∗(2^k) time when given a K₂-free modulator of size k, we show that this problem can likewise be solved in randomized O^*(2^{k}) time when given a K₃-free modulator of size k. This result in turn yields a randomized O^*(2^{3k/2}) algorithm for (n-k)-Coloring (also known as Dual Coloring), improving the previous O^*(4^k) bound. We then introduce a smaller parameterization, (ω+μ-k)-Coloring, where ω is the clique number and μ is the size of a maximum matching in the complement graph; since ω+μ ≤ n for any graph, this problem is strictly harder. Using the same co-triangle-packing argument, we obtain a randomized O^*(2^{6k}) algorithm, establishing its fixed-parameter tractability for a smaller parameter. Complementing this finding, we show that no fixed-parameter tractable algorithm exists for (ω-k)-Coloring or (μ-k)-Coloring under standard complexity assumptions.

Parameterized Complexity of Directed Traveling Salesman Problem

Authors: Václav Blažej, Andreas Emil Feldmann, Foivos Fioravantes, Paweł Rzążewski, and Ondřej Suchý

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 359, 36th International Symposium on Algorithms and Computation (ISAAC 2025)

Abstract
The Directed Traveling Salesman Problem (DTSP) is a variant of the classical Traveling Salesman Problem in which the edges in the graph are directed and a vertex and edge can be visited multiple times. The goal is to find a directed closed walk of minimum length (or total weight) that visits every vertex of the given graph at least once. In a yet more general version, Directed Waypoint Routing Problem (DWRP), some vertices are marked as terminals and we are only required to visit all terminals. Furthermore, each edge has its capacity bounding the number of times this edge can be used by a solution. While both problems (and many other variants of TSP) were extensively investigated, mostly from the approximation point of view, there are surprisingly few results concerning the parameterized complexity. Our starting point is the result of Marx et al. [APPROX/RANDOM 2016] who proved that DTSP is W[1]-hard parameterized by distance to pathwidth 3. In this paper we aim to initiate the systematic complexity study of variants of Directed Traveling Salesman Problem with respect to various, mostly structural, parameters. We show that DWRP is FPT parameterized by the solution size, the feedback edge number and the vertex integrity of the underlying undirected graph. Furthermore, the problem is XP parameterized by treewidth. On the complexity side, we show that the problem is W[1]-hard parameterized by the distance to constant treedepth.

Precoloring Extension with Demands on Paths

Authors: Arun Kumar Das, Michal Opler, and Tomáš Valla

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 359, 36th International Symposium on Algorithms and Computation (ISAAC 2025)

Abstract
Let G be a graph with a set of precolored vertices, and let us be given an integer distance parameter d and a set of integer demands d₁,… ,d_c. The Distance Precoloring Extension with Demands (DPED) problem is to compute a vertex c-coloring of G such that the following three conditions hold: (i) the resulting coloring respects the colors of the precolored vertices, (ii) the distance of two vertices of the same color is at least d, and (iii) the number of vertices colored by color i is exactly d_i. This problem is motivated by a program scheduling in commercial broadcast channels with constraints on content repetition and placement, which leads precisely to the DPED problem for paths. In this paper, we study DPED on paths and present a polynomial time exact algorithm when precolored vertices are restricted to the two ends of the path and devise an approximation algorithm for DPED with an additive approximation factor polynomially bounded by d and the number of precolored vertices. Then, we prove that the Distance Precoloring Extension problem on paths, a less restrictive version of DPED without the demand constraints, and then DPED itself, is NP-complete. Motivated by this result, we further study the parameterized complexity of DPED on paths. We establish that the DPED problem on paths is W[1]-hard when parameterized by the number of colors and the distance. On the positive side, we devise a fixed parameter tractable (FPT) algorithm for DPED on paths when the number of colors, the distance, and the number of precolored vertices are considered as the parameters. Moreover, we prove that Distance Precoloring Extension is FPT parameterized by the distance. As a byproduct, we also obtain several results for the Distance List Coloring problem on paths.

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 136, 36th International Conference on Principles of Diagnosis and Resilient Systems (DX 2025)

Abstract
Modern complex systems, such as radiotherapy machines, require robust strategies for fault detection, diagnosis, and prognosis to ensure operational continuity and patient safety. While data-driven methods have gained traction, few studies address diagnostic and prognostic tasks using multimodal operational data under unsupervised or semi-supervised learning settings. This gap is particularly critical given the scarcity of labeled failure data in real-world environments. This work aims to design a unified approach for fault detection, diagnosis, and prognosis using multimodal data in the absence of complete labeling. To this end, autoencoders (AEs) are employed due to their suitability for unsupervised and self-supervised learning, flexibility in handling heterogeneous data, and ability to construct latent representations optimized for various downstream tasks. A specific implementation based on a Long Short-Term Memory β-Variational Autoencoder (LSTM-β-VAE) was developed to detect anomalies in machine logs. This framework is applied to TomoTherapy® systems - a highly complex and under-explored use case within the radiotherapy domain. Initial results demonstrate strong anomaly detection performance on both a public benchmark dataset (HDFS) and a proprietary dataset derived from real-world TomoTherapy® machine faults. Beyond methodology, the paper includes a concise literature review of multimodal learning and data-driven diagnosis and prognosis with a focus on AEs. Based on this review, key research directions are identified for the continuation of the thesis, especially the integration of explainable AI as a means to enhance diagnosis capabilities in the absence of labeled faults.

Beyond Dynamic Bayesian Networks: Fusing Temporal Logic Monitors with Probabilistic Diagnosis (Short Paper)

Authors: Chetan Kulkarni and Johann Schumann

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 136, 36th International Conference on Principles of Diagnosis and Resilient Systems (DX 2025)

Abstract
Conventional diagnostic systems often fail to account for temporal dynamics - such as duration, frequency, or sequence of events - which are critical for accurate fault assessment. Existing solutions that model time, like Dynamic Bayesian Networks (DBNs), typically suffer from computational complexity and scalability issues. This paper introduces a hybrid diagnostic architecture that integrates a standard Bayesian Networks (BNs) with a powerful temporal reasoner R2U2 (Realizable Responsive Unobtrusive Unit). By decoupling temporal logic from probabilistic inference, our approach allows the specialized R2U2 engine to efficiently process complex time-dependent conditions and provide nuanced inputs to the BNs. The result is a more scalable, flexible, and robust framework for diagnosing failures in systems where temporal behavior is a key factor. The paper will detail this architecture, its generation from system models, and demonstrate its capabilities using a UAV electric powertrain example.

Temporal GraphQL: A Tree Grammar Approach

Authors: Curtis E. Dyreson and Bishal Sarkar

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 355, 32nd International Symposium on Temporal Representation and Reasoning (TIME 2025)

Abstract
This paper presents a novel system, called Temporal GraphQL, for supporting temporal data in web services. A temporal web service is a service that provides a temporal view of data, that is, a view of the current data as well as past or future states of the data. Capturing the history of the data is important in data forensics, data auditing, and subscriptions, where an application continuously reads data. GraphQL is a technology for improving the development and management of web services. Originally developed by Facebook and widely used in industry, GraphQL is a query language for web services. This paper introduces Temporal GraphQL. We show how to use tree grammars to model GraphQL schemas, data, and queries, and propose temporal tree grammars to model Temporal GraphQL. We extend GraphQL with temporal snapshot, slice, and delta operators. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work on Temporal GraphQL and temporal tree grammars.

Temporal Ensemble Logic for Integrative Representation of the Entirety of Clinical Trials

Abstract
Clinical trials are typically specified with protocols that define eligibility criteria, treatment regimens, follow-up schedules, and outcome assessments. Temporality is a hallmark of all clinical trials, reflected within and across trial components, with complex dependencies unfolding across multiple time points. Despite their importance, clinical trial protocols are described in free-text format, limiting their semantic precision and the ability to support automated reasoning, leverage data across studies and sites, or simulate trial execution under varying assumptions using Real-World Data. This paper introduces a formalized representation of clinical trials using Temporal Ensemble Logic (TEL). TEL incorporates metricized modal operators, such as "always until t" (□_t) and "possibly until t" (◇_t), where t is a time-length parameter, to offer a logical framework for capturing phenotypes in biomedicine. TEL is more expressive in syntax than classical linear temporal logic (LTL) while maintaining the simplicity of semantic structures. The attributes of TEL are exploited in this paper to formally represent not only individual clinical trial components, but also the timing and sequential dependencies of these components as a whole. Modeling strategies and demonstration case studies are provided to show that TEL can represent the entirety of clinical trials, whereby providing a formal logical framework that can be used to represent the intricate temporal dependencies in trial structure specification. Since clinical trials are a cornerstone of evidence-based medicine, serving as the scientific basis for evaluating the safety, efficacy, and comparative effectiveness of therapeutic interventions, results reported here can serve as a stepping stone that leads to scalable, consistent, and reproducible representation and simulation of clinical trials across all disease domains.
