Simplicial Approximation to CW Complexes with Spherical Delaunay Triangulations

Abstract
Simplicial approximation provides a framework for constructing simplicial complexes that are homotopy equivalent to a given manifold, provided a CW structure is explicitly known. However, its conventional implementation quickly becomes intractable on a computer: barycentric subdivision produces poorly shaped simplices, and the star condition introduces many vertices. To address these limitations, this article develops a subdivision scheme based on spherical Delaunay triangulations, which attains better refinement properties than barycentric subdivisions. Moreover, the star condition is reframed as two independent problems, one geometric and the other combinatorial, respectively tackled in the language of locally equiconnected spaces and the list homomorphism problem, allowing an exponential reduction in the number of vertices. Via a prototype implementation, we obtain simplicial complexes homotopy equivalent to Grassmannians and Stiefel manifolds up to dimension 5.

2D Minimal Graph Rigidity is in NC for One-Crossing-Minor-Free Graphs

Abstract
Minimally rigid graphs can be decided and embedded in the plane efficiently, i.e. in polynomial time. There is also an efficient randomized parallel algorithm, i.e. in RNC. We present an NC-algorithm to decide whether one-crossing-minor-free graphs are minimally rigid. In the special case of K_{3,3}-free graphs, we also compute an infinitesimally rigid embedding in NC.

TEE Is Not a Healer: Rollback-Resistant Reliable Storage

Abstract
Recent advances in secure hardware technologies, such as Intel SGX or ARM TrustZone, offer an opportunity to substantially reduce the costs of Byzantine fault-tolerance by placing the program code and state within a secure enclave known as a Trusted Execution Environment (TEE). However, the protection offered by a TEE only applies during program execution. Once power is switched off, the non-volatile portion of the program state becomes vulnerable to rollback attacks wherein it is undetectably reverted to an older version. In this paper we consider the problem of implementing reliable read/write registers out of failure-prone replicas subject to state rollbacks. To this end, we introduce a new unified model that captures multiple failure types that can affect a TEE-based system and establish tight bounds on the fault-tolerance of register constructions in this model. We consider both the static case, where failure thresholds hold throughout the entire execution, and the dynamic case, where any number of replicas can roll back, provided these failures do not occur too often. Our dynamic register emulation algorithm, TEE-Rex , provides the first correct implementation of a distributed state recovery procedure that requires neither durable storage nor specialized hardware, such as trusted monotonic counters.

Movement in Low Gravity (MoLo) – LUNA: Biomechanical Modelling to Mitigate Lunar Surface Operation Risks

Abstract
The Artemis programme seeks to develop and test concepts, hardware and approaches to support long term habitation of the Lunar surface, and future missions to Mars. In preparation for the Artemis missions determination of tasks to be performed, the functional requirements of such tasks and as mission duration extends whether physiological deconditioning becomes functionally significant, compromising the crew member’s ability to perform critical tasks on the surface, and/or upon return to earth [MoLo-LUNA – leveraging the Molo programme (and several other activities) - could become a key supporting activity for LUNA incl. validation of the Puppeteer offloading system itself via creation of a complementary MoLo-LUNA-LAB. Furthermore, the MoLo-LUNA programme could become a key facilitator of simulator suit instrumentation/definition, broader astronaut training activities and mission architecture development – including Artemis mission simulations. By employing a Puppeteer system external to the LUNA chamber hall it will optimise utilisation and cost-effectiveness of LUNA, and as such represents a critical service to future LUNA stakeholders. Furthermore, MoLo-LUNA would generate a unique data set that can be leveraged to predict de-conditioning on the Lunar surface - and thereby optimise functionality, and minimise mission risk – including informing the need for, and prescription of exercise countermeasures on the Lunar Surface and in transit. Thus, MoLo-LUNA offers a unique opportunity to place LUNA, and ESA as a key ongoing provider of evidence to define, optimise and support crew Artemis surface missions.

A Comparison of Three Program Query Languages to Detect Python Programming Misconceptions

Abstract
Detecting and addressing common misconceptions in beginner programmers' code is key to improve their learning experience. This paper evaluates the effectiveness of three static program query languages and tools: Flake8, Regex and CodeQL, for identifying such misconceptions in Python code. We implemented a set of 20 common misconceptions using each language and compared them on a variety of criteria, including accuracy, performance, expressiveness, learning curve and query readability. Our analysis highlights strengths and limitations of each approach, providing insights into the most effective method for detecting programming misconceptions and enhancing feedback quality for learners.

Exploration and Complexity Management in Graph-Based Programming Environments

Abstract
Programmers often rely on different environments depending on the nature of their tasks. For large-scale software projects, IDEs help manage complexity through structured abstractions like files, modules, and classes, and provide tools for code visualization and navigation. In contrast, exploratory programming tasks - such as data analysis, rapid prototyping, and design space exploration - are better served by interactive environments like REPLs and Notebooks, which support incremental development and immediate feedback. However, these tools tend to prioritize either complexity management or exploration, limiting their effectiveness across contexts. This paper investigates a hybrid graph-based programming environment that bridges these two modes by building on Incremental Graph Code (IGC), a graph-based system for structuring, visualizing, and interacting with source code. We explore how IGC can support both complexity management and exploratory programming through three key features: projectional views for aggregating and navigating interrelated code and documentation, graph-type nodes for encapsulating subgraphs to manage structural complexity, and an exploratory programming view for managing branching executions and promoting experimentation. Together, these features suggest that graph-based environments like IGC can offer a unified platform for both systematic software engineering and dynamic, exploratory development.

PShapeTrace: Linking Drawing Instructions with Visual Outcomes in Processing

Abstract
Processing is a Java-based programming language designed to facilitate learning programming through visual arts and creative coding. However, beginners must simultaneously learn both the programming language itself and image-processing concepts such as coordinate systems, making it challenging to understand the correspondence between drawing instructions and their visual outcomes. To help beginners analyze the drawing process in their code, this study proposes a tool named PShapeTrace that observes the execution of Processing programs and visualizes the relationship between drawing instructions and their results. A user study was conducted to evaluate the tool. Participants reported that the tool was useful for completing programming tasks. The resulting System Usability Scale (SUS) score was 72.75, indicating acceptable usability.

Enabling Secure Coding: Exploring GenAI for Developer Training and Education

Abstract
The rapid adoption of GenAI for code generation presents unprecedented opportunities and significant security challenges. Raising awareness about secure coding is critical for preventing software vulnerabilities. To investigate how Generative AI can best support secure coding, we built an AI Secure Coding platform, an interactive training environment that embeds a GPT-4 based chatbot directly into a structured challenge workflow. The platform comprises a landing page, a challenges page with three AI-generated tasks, and a challenge page where participants work with code snippets. In each challenge, developers (1) identify vulnerabilities by reviewing code and adding comments, (2) ask the AI for help via a chat based interface, (3) review and refine comments based on AI feedback, and (4) fix vulnerabilities by submitting secure patches. The study involved 18 industry developers tackling three challenges. Participants used the AI Secure Coding Platform to detect and remediate vulnerabilities and then completed a survey to capture their opinions and comfort level with AI assisted platform for secure coding. Results show that AI assistance can boost productivity, reduce errors, and uncover more defects when treated as a "second pair of eyes," but it can also foster over-reliance. This study introduces the AI Secure Coding platform, presents preliminary results from a initial study, and shows that embedding GenAI into a structured secure-coding workflow can both enable and challenge developers. This work also opens the door to a new research field: leveraging GenAI to enable secure software development.

Integrating Questions About Learners’ Code in an Automated Assessment System

Abstract
Questions about Learners' Code (QLCs) assess programming students' program comprehension skills by providing personalised questions targeting the students' own program code. We conducted a preliminary, experimental implementation of integrating QLCs in the Automated Assessment System (AAS) used in an introductory programming course using Java. QLCs targeted some of the code assignments which students had to complete during the course. We collected 889 answers to QLCs, answered by 13 students over five course modules. We found that as the complexity of exercises increases, the success rate of the same type of QLC may not improve, and even exhibit a decline over time. We further analysed incorrect answers individually to relate them to possible misconceptions.

Interactive Evaluation of Complex Programming Assignments Using LLM Assistant

Abstract
Generative language models present significant advancements in artificial intelligence with increasing applications in software engineering education. This paper explores the potential of customized generative dialogue models for automated assessment of programming assignments. The research introduces KP Assistant, a tailored implementation based on GPT-4o developed for a Component Programming university course. The research evaluated the effectiveness of this approach in generating relevant questions about source code, assessing student understanding, and providing objective feedback through a series of experiments with various game implementations and student testing. The findings demonstrate the feasibility of integrating such models into educational workflows while also acknowledging their present limitations. The study provides a framework for implementing similar systems in programming education, showing how generative AI can augment traditional assessment methods while maintaining pedagogical integrity.

U-Prithvi: Integrating a Foundation Model and U-Net for Enhanced Flood Inundation Mapping

Abstract
In recent years, large pre-trained models, commonly referred to as foundation models, have become increasingly popular for various tasks leveraging transfer learning. This trend has expanded to remote sensing, where transformer-based foundation models such as Prithvi, msGFM, and SatSwinMAE have been utilized for a range of applications. While these transformer-based models, particularly the Prithvi model, exhibit strong generalization capabilities, they have limitations on capturing fine-grained details compared to convolutional neural network architectures like U-Net in segmentation tasks. In this paper, we propose a novel architecture, U-Prithvi, which combines the strengths of the Prithvi transformer with those of U-Net. We introduce a RandomHalfMaskLayer to ensure balanced learning from both models during training. Our approach is evaluated on the Sen1Floods11 dataset for flood inundation mapping, and experimental results demonstrate better performance of U-Prithvi over both individual models, achieving improved performance on out-of-sample data. While this principle is illustrated using the Prithvi model, it is easily adaptable to other foundation models.

Uncertainty Management in the Construction of Knowledge Graphs: A Survey

Abstract
Knowledge Graphs (KGs) are a major asset for companies thanks to their great flexibility in data representation and their numerous applications, e.g., vocabulary sharing, Q&A or recommendation systems. To build a KG, it is a common practice to rely on automatic methods for extracting knowledge from various heterogeneous sources. However, in a noisy and uncertain world, knowledge may not be reliable and conflicts between data sources may occur. Integrating unreliable data would directly impact the use of the KG, therefore such conflicts must be resolved. This could be done manually by selecting the best data to integrate. This first approach is highly accurate, but costly and time-consuming. That is why recent efforts focus on automatic approaches, which represent a challenging task since it requires handling the uncertainty of extracted knowledge throughout its integration into the KG. We survey state-of-the-art approaches in this direction and present constructions of both open and enterprise KGs. We then describe different knowledge extraction methods and discuss downstream tasks after knowledge acquisition, including KG completion using embedding models, knowledge alignment, and knowledge fusion in order to address the problem of knowledge uncertainty in KG construction. We conclude with a discussion on the remaining challenges and perspectives when constructing a KG taking into account uncertainty.
