Resilience in Knowledge Graph Embeddings

Abstract
In recent years, knowledge graphs have gained interest and witnessed widespread applications in various domains, such as information retrieval, question-answering, recommendation systems, amongst others. Large-scale knowledge graphs to this end have demonstrated their utility in effectively representing structured knowledge. To further facilitate the application of machine learning techniques, knowledge graph embedding models have been developed. Such models can transform entities and relationships within knowledge graphs into vectors. However, these embedding models often face challenges related to noise, missing information, distribution shift, adversarial attacks, etc. This can lead to sub-optimal embeddings and incorrect inferences, thereby negatively impacting downstream applications. While the existing literature has focused so far on adversarial attacks on KGE models, the challenges related to the other critical aspects remain unexplored. In this paper, we, first of all, give a unified definition of resilience, encompassing several factors such as generalisation, in-distribution generalization, distribution adaption, and robustness. After formalizing these concepts for machine learning in general, we define them in the context of knowledge graphs. To find the gap in the existing works on resilience in the context of knowledge graphs, we perform a systematic survey, taking into account all these aspects mentioned previously. Our survey results show that most of the existing works focus on a specific aspect of resilience, namely robustness. After categorizing such works based on their respective aspects of resilience, we discuss the challenges and future research directions.

Counting Small Induced Subgraphs: Scorpions Are Easy but Not Trivial

Abstract
In the parameterized problem #IndSub(Φ) for fixed graph properties Φ, given as input a graph G and an integer k, the task is to compute the number of induced k-vertex subgraphs satisfying Φ. Dörfler et al. [Algorithmica 2022] and Roth et al. [SICOMP 2024] conjectured that #IndSub(Φ) is #W[1]-hard for all non-meager properties Φ, i.e., properties that are nontrivial for infinitely many k. This conjecture has been confirmed for several restricted types of properties, including all hereditary properties [STOC 2022] and all edge-monotone properties [STOC 2024]. We refute this conjecture by showing that induced k-vertex graphs that are scorpions can be counted in time O(n⁴) for all k. Scorpions were introduced more than 50 years ago in the context of the evasiveness conjecture. A simple variant of this construction results in graph properties that achieve arbitrary intermediate complexity assuming ETH. Moreover, we formulate an updated conjecture on the complexity of #IndSub(Φ) that correctly captures the complexity status of scorpions and related constructions.

(Multivariate) k-SUM as Barrier to Succinct Computation

Abstract
How does the time complexity of a problem change when the input is given succinctly rather than explicitly? We study this question for several geometric problems defined on a set X of N points in ℤ^d. As succinct representation, we choose a sumset (or Minkowski sum) representation: Instead of receiving X explicitly, we are given sets A,B of n points that define X as A+B = {a+b∣ a ∈ A,b ∈ B}. We investigate the fine-grained complexity of this succinct version for several Õ(N)-time computable geometric primitives. Remarkably, we can tie their complexity tightly to the complexity of corresponding k-SUM problems. Specifically, we introduce as All-ints 3-SUM(n,n,k) the following multivariate, multi-output variant of 3-SUM: given sets A,B of size n and set C of size k, determine for all c ∈ C whether there are a ∈ A and b ∈ B with a+b = c. We obtain the following results: 1) Succinct closest L_∞-pair requires time N^{1-o(1)} under the 3-SUM hypothesis, while succinct furthest L_∞-pair can be solved in time Õ(n). 2) Succinct bichromatic closest L_∞-Pair requires time N^{1-o(1)} iff the 4-SUM hypothesis holds. 3) The following problems are fine-grained equivalent to All-ints 3-SUM(n,n,k): succinct skyline computation in 2D with output size k and succinct batched orthogonal range search with k given ranges. This establishes conditionally tight Õ(min{nk, N})-time algorithms for these problems. We obtain further connections with All-ints 3-SUM(n,n,k) for succinctly computing independent sets in unit interval graphs. Thus, (Multivariate) k-SUM problems precisely capture the barrier for enabling sumset-succinct computation for various geometric primitives.

Separating Two Points with Obstacles in the Plane: Improved Upper and Lower Bounds

Abstract
Given two points in the plane, and a set of "obstacles" given as curves through the plane with assigned weights, we consider the point-separation problem, which asks for a minimum-weight subset of the obstacles separating the two points. A few computational models for this problem have been previously studied. We give a unified approach to this problem in all models via a reduction to a particular shortest-path problem, and obtain improved running times in essentially all cases. In addition, we also give fine-grained lower bounds for many cases.

Virtual Reality Prototyping Environment for Concurrent Design, Training and Rover Operations

Abstract
As part of the CASIMAR (Collaborative Astronaut Supporting Interregional Moon Analog Rover) project, initiated by the BVSR e.V. (Bundesverband Studentischer Raumfahrt), the TUDSaT (TU Darmstadt Space Technology e.V.) team is developing a Virtual Reality (VR) prototype environment to support the interdisciplinary design process of lunar exploration technologies. Given the complexity of collaboration among eight organizations, this tool aims to streamline design integration and enhance mission planning. The primary objective is to create a comprehensive 3D model of the rover, complete with predefined procedures and activities, to simulate astronaut-robot interaction. By leveraging VR technology, astronauts can familiarize themselves with the rover and its EVA (Extravehicular Activity) tools before actual deployment, improving operational safety and efficiency. Beyond training applications, this virtual environment serves as a critical platform for designing, testing, and benchmarking rover functionalities and EVA procedures. Ultimately, our work contributes to optimizing human-robotic interaction, ensuring that lunar exploration missions are both effective and well-prepared before reaching the Moon.

Toward an Earth-Independent System for EVA Mission Planning: Integrating Physical Models, Domain Knowledge, and Agentic RAG to Provide Explainable LLM-Based Decision Support

Abstract
We propose a unified framework for an Earth‑independent AI system that provides explainable, context‑aware decision support for EVA mission planning by integrating six core components: a fine‑tuned EVA domain LLM, a retrieval‑augmented knowledge base, a short-term memory store, physical simulation models, an agentic orchestration layer, and a multimodal user interface. To ground our design, we analyze the current roles and substitution potential of the Mission Control Center - identifying which procedural and analytical functions can be automated onboard while preserving human oversight for experiential and strategic tasks. Building on this framework, we introduce RASAGE (Retrieval & Simulation Augmented Guidance Agent for Exploration), a proof‑of‑concept toolset that combines Microsoft Phi‑4‑mini‑instruct with a FAISS (Facebook AI Similarity Search)‑powered EVA knowledge base and custom A* path planning and hypogravity metabolic models to generate grounded, traceable EVA plans. We outline a staged validation strategy to evaluate improvements in route efficiency, metabolic prediction accuracy, anomaly response effectiveness, and crew trust under realistic communication delays. Our findings demonstrate the feasibility of replicating key Mission Control functions onboard, enhancing crew autonomy, reducing cognitive load, and improving safety for deep‑space exploration missions.

Algorithmic Contiguity from Low-Degree Conjecture and Applications in Correlated Random Graphs

Abstract
In this paper, assuming a natural strengthening of the low-degree conjecture, we provide evidence of computational hardness for two problems: (1) the (partial) matching recovery problem in the sparse correlated Erdős-Rényi graphs G(n,q;ρ) when the edge-density q = n^{-1+o(1)} and the correlation ρ < √{α} lies below the Otter’s threshold, this resolves a remaining problem in [Jian Ding et al., 2023]; (2) the detection problem between a pair of correlated sparse stochastic block model S(n,λ/n;k,ε;s) and a pair of independent stochastic block models S(n,λs/n;k,ε) when ε² λ s < 1 lies below the Kesten-Stigum (KS) threshold and s < √α lies below the Otter’s threshold, this resolves a remaining problem in [Guanyi Chen et al., 2024]. One of the main ingredient in our proof is to derive certain forms of algorithmic contiguity between two probability measures based on bounds on their low-degree advantage. To be more precise, consider the high-dimensional hypothesis testing problem between two probability measures ℙ and ℚ based on the sample Y. We show that if the low-degree advantage Adv_{≤D}(dℙ/dℚ) = O(1), then (assuming the low-degree conjecture) there is no efficient algorithm A such that ℚ(A(Y) = 0) = 1-o(1) and ℙ(A(Y) = 1) = Ω(1). This framework provides a useful tool for performing reductions between different inference tasks.

Immersive Pedagogy: Converting AI-Driven Podcasts into Virtual Reality Learning Objects

Abstract
Educational content creation is being transformed by artificial intelligence (AI) tools that can generate, process, and deliver learning materials across different environments. This paper presents a novel approach for converting AI-generated podcasts into immersive virtual reality (VR) learning experiences. We use the NotebookLM platform to create educational podcast audio recordings, which are then transformed into VR learning objects through automatic transcription, speaker diarization, and integration into a VR environment. The resulting VR learning objects address multiple learning preferences - supporting auditory learners through audio and visual learners through virtual presenters, and kinesthetic learners through immersive interaction. We evaluated this approach within a software engineering course, demonstrating its practical applicability and educational effectiveness.

Abstract
The paper presents a browser native C++ interpreter integrated into an AI-assisted educational platform designed to enhance programming learning in formal education. The interpreter leverages Parsing Expression Grammars (PEG) to generate Abstract Syntax Trees (AST) and executes C++ code using a TypeScript-based runtime. The system supports key C++ features, including pointer arithmetic, function overloading, and namespace resolution, and emulates memory management via reference-counted JavaScript objects. Integrated within a web-based learning environment, it provides automated feedback, error explanations, and code quality evaluations. The evaluation involved 4582 students in three difficulty levels and feedback from 14 teachers. The results include high system usability scale (SUS) scores (avg. 83.5) and WBLT learning effectiveness scores (avg. 4.58/5). Interpreter performance testing in 65 cases averaged under 10 ms per task, confirming its practical applicability to school curricula. The system supports SCORM and PWA deployment, enabling LMS-independent usage. The work introduces a technical innovation in browser-based C++ execution and a scalable framework for LLM-enhanced programming pedagogy.

Quantum Speedups for Polynomial-Time Dynamic Programming Algorithms

Abstract
We introduce a quantum dynamic programming framework that allows us to directly extend to the quantum realm a large body of classical dynamic programming algorithms. The corresponding quantum dynamic programming algorithms retain the same space complexity as their classical counterpart, while achieving a computational speedup. For a combinatorial (search or optimization) problem P and an instance I of P, such a speedup can be expressed in terms of the average degree δ of the {dependency digraph} G_𝒫(I) of I, determined by a recursive formulation of P. The nodes of this graph are the subproblems of P induced by I and its arcs are directed from each subproblem to those on whose solution it relies. In particular, our framework allows us to solve the considered problems in Õ(|V(G_𝒫(I))| √δ) time. As an example, we obtain a quantum version of the Bellman-Ford algorithm for computing shortest paths from a single source vertex to all the other vertices in a weighted n-vertex digraph with m edges that runs in Õ(n√{nm}) time, which improves the best known classical upper bound when m ∈ Ω(n^{1.4}).

Convolution and Knapsack in Higher Dimensions

Abstract
In the Knapsack problem, one is given the task of packing a knapsack of a given size with items in order to gain a packing with a high profit value. As one of the most classical problems in computer science, research for this problem has gone a long way. One important connection to the (max,+)-convolution problem has been established, where knapsack solutions can be combined by building the convolution of two sequences. This observation has been used in recent years to give conditional lower bounds but also parameterized algorithms. In this paper we carry these results into higher dimensions. We consider Knapsack where items are characterized by multiple properties - given through a vector - and a knapsack that has a capacity vector. The packing must not exceed any of the given capacity constraints. In order to show a similar sub-quadratic lower bound we consider a multidimensional version of (max, +)-convolution. We then consider variants of this problem introduced by Cygan et al. and prove that they are all equivalent in terms of algorithms that allow for a running time sub-quadratic in the number of entries of the array. We further develop a parameterized algorithm to solve higher dimensional Knapsack. The techniques we apply are inspired by an algorithm introduced by Axiotis and Tzamos. We will show that even for higher dimensional Knapsack, we can reduce the problem to convolution on one-dimensional, concave sequences, leading to an 𝒪(dn + dD ⋅ max{(Π_{i=1}^d t_i), t_max log t_max}) algorithm, where D is the number of different weight vectors, t the capacity vector and d is the dimension of the problem. Then, we use the techniques to improve the approach of Eisenbrand and Weismantel to obtain an algorithm for Integer Linear Programming with upper bounds with running time 𝒪(dn) + D ⋅ 𝒪(d Δ)^{d(d+1)} + T_LP. Finally, we give an divide-and-conquer algorithm for ILP with running time n^{d+1} ⋅ O(Δ)^d ⋅ log(|u - 𝓁|_∞).

Large Multi-Modal Model Cartographic Map Comprehension for Textual Locality Georeferencing

Abstract
Millions of biological sample records collected in the last few centuries archived in natural history collections are un-georeferenced. Georeferencing complex locality descriptions associated with these collection samples is a highly labour-intensive task collection agencies struggle with. None of the existing automated methods exploit maps that are an essential tool for georeferencing complex relations. We present preliminary experiments and results of a novel method that exploits multi-modal capabilities of recent Large Multi-Modal Models (LMM). This method enables the model to visually contextualize spatial relations it reads in the locality description. We use a grid-based approach to adapt these auto-regressive models for this task in a zero-shot setting. Our experiments conducted on a small manually annotated dataset show impressive results for our approach (∼1 km Average distance error) compared to uni-modal georeferencing with Large Language Models and existing georeferencing tools. The paper also discusses the findings of the experiments in light of an LMM’s ability to comprehend fine-grained maps. Motivated by these results, a practical framework is proposed to integrate this method into a georeferencing workflow.

Parallel MIP Solving with Dynamic Task Decomposition

Abstract
Mixed Integer Programming (MIP) is a foundational model in operations research. Although significant progress has been made in enhancing sequential MIP solvers through sophisticated techniques and heuristics, remarkable developments in computing resources have made parallel solving a promising direction for performance improvement. In this work, we propose a novel parallel MIP solving framework that employs dynamic task decomposition in a divide-and-conquer paradigm. Our framework incorporates a hardness estimate heuristic to identify challenging solving tasks and a reward decaying mechanism to reinforce the task decomposition decision. We apply our framework to two state-of-the-art open-source MIP solvers, SCIP and HiGHS, yielding efficient parallel solvers. Extensive experiments on the full MIPLIB benchmark, using up to 128 cores, demonstrate that our framework yields substantial performance improvements over modern divide-and-conquer parallel solvers. Moreover, our parallel solvers have established new best known solutions for 16 open MIPLIB instances.

Switching Graph Matrix Norm Bounds: From i.i.d. to Random Regular Graphs

Abstract
In this work, we give novel spectral norm bounds for graph matrix on inputs being random regular graphs. Graph matrix is a family of random matrices with entries given by polynomial functions of the underlying input. These matrices have been known to be the backbone for the analysis of various average-case algorithms and hardness. Previous investigations of such matrices are largely restricted to the Erdős-Rényi model, and tight matrix norm bounds on regular graphs are only known for specific examples. We unite these two lines of investigations, and give the first result departing from the Erdős-Rényi setting in the full generality of graph matrices. We believe our norm bound result would enable a simple transfer of spectral analysis for average-case algorithms and hardness between these two distributions of random graphs. As an application of our spectral norm bounds, we show that higher-degree Sum-of-Squares lower bounds for the independent set problem on Erdős-Rényi random graphs can be switched into lower bounds on random d-regular graphs. Our main conceptual insight is that existing Sum-of-Squares lower bounds analysis based on moment methods are surprisingly robust, and amenable for a light-weight translation. Our result is the first to address the general open question of analyzing higher-degree Sum-of-Squares on random regular graphs.

Sparsity-Driven Aggregation of Mixed Integer Programs

Abstract
Cutting planes are crucial for the performance of branch-and-cut algorithms for solving mixed-integer programming (MIP) problems, and linear row aggregation has been successfully applied to better leverage the potential of several major families of MIP cutting planes. This paper formulates the problem of finding good quality aggregations as an 𝓁₀-norm minimization problem and employs a combination of the lasso method and iterative reweighting to efficiently find sparse solutions corresponding to good aggregations. A comparative analysis of the proposed algorithm and the state-of-the-art greedy heuristic approach is presented, showing that the greedy heuristic implements a stepwise selection algorithm for the 𝓁₀-norm minimization problem. Further, we present an example where our approach succeeds, whereas the standard heuristic fails to find an aggregation with desired properties. The algorithm is implemented within the constraint integer programming solver SCIP, and computational experiments on the MIPLIB 2017 benchmark show that although the algorithm leads to slowdowns on relatively "easier" instances, our aggregation approach decreases the mean running time on a subset of challenging instances and leads to smaller branch-and-bound trees.
