Dimension Reduction for Clustering: The Curious Case of Discrete Centers

Abstract
The Johnson-Lindenstrauss transform is a fundamental method for dimension reduction in Euclidean spaces, that can map any dataset of n points into dimension O(log n) with low distortion of their distances. This dimension bound is tight in general, but one can bypass it for specific problems. Indeed, tremendous progress has been made for clustering problems, especially in the continuous setting where centers can be picked from the ambient space ℝ^d. Most notably, for k-median and k-means, the dimension bound was improved to O(log k) [Makarychev, Makarychev and Razenshteyn, STOC 2019]. We explore dimension reduction for clustering in the discrete setting, where centers can only be picked from the dataset, and present two results that are both parameterized by the doubling dimension of the dataset, denoted as ddim. The first result shows that dimension O_{ε}(ddim + log k + log log n) suffices, and is moreover tight, to guarantee that the cost is preserved within factor 1±ε for every set of centers. Our second result eliminates the log log n term in the dimension through a relaxation of the guarantee (namely, preserving the cost only for all approximately-optimal sets of centers), which maintains its usefulness for downstream applications. Overall, we achieve strong dimension reduction in the discrete setting, and find that it differs from the continuous setting not only in the dimension bound, which depends on the doubling dimension, but also in the guarantees beyond preserving the optimal value, such as which clusterings are preserved.

Triangle Detection in H-Free Graphs

Abstract
We initiate the study of combinatorial algorithms for Triangle Detection in H-free graphs. The goal is to decide if a graph that forbids a fixed pattern H as a subgraph contains a triangle, using only "combinatorial" methods that notably exclude fast matrix multiplication. Our work aims to classify which patterns admit a subcubic speedup, working towards a dichotomy theorem. On the lower bound side, we show that if H is not 3-colorable or contains more than one triangle, the complexity of the problem remains unchanged, and no combinatorial speedup is likely possible. On the upper bound side, we develop an embedding approach that results in a strongly subcubic, combinatorial algorithm for a rich class of "embeddable" patterns. Specifically, for an embeddable pattern of size k, our algorithm runs in Õ(n^{3-1/(2^{k-3)}}) time, where Õ(⋅) hides poly-logarithmic factors. This algorithm also extends to listing all the triangles within the same time bound. We supplement this main result with two generalizations: - A generalization to patterns that are embeddable up to a single obstacle that arises from a triangle in the pattern. This completes our classification for small patterns, yielding a dichotomy theorem for all patterns of size up to eight. - An H-sensitive algorithm for embeddable patterns, which runs faster when the number of copies of H is significantly smaller than the maximum possible Ω(n^{k}). Finally, we focus on the special case of odd cycles. We present specialized Triangle Detection algorithms that are very efficient: - A combinatorial algorithm for C_{2k+1}-free graphs that runs in Õ(m+n^{1+2/k}) time for every k ≥ 2, where m is the number of edges in the graph. - A combinatorial C₅-sensitive algorithm that runs in Õ(n² + n^{4/3} t^{1/3}) time, where t is the number of 5-cycles in the graph.

New Approximate Distance Oracles and Their Applications

Abstract
Let G = (V, E) be an undirected graph with n vertices and m edges, and let μ = m/n. A distance oracle is a data structure designed to answer approximate distance queries, with the goal of achieving low stretch, efficient space usage, and fast query time. While much of the prior work focused on distance oracles with constant query time, this paper presents a comprehensive study of distance oracles with non-constant query time. We explore the tradeoffs between space, stretch, and query time of distance oracles in various regimes. Specifically, we consider both weighted and unweighted graphs in the regimes of stretch < 2 and stretch ≥ 2. In addition, we demonstrate several applications of our new distance oracles to the n-Pairs Shortest Paths (n-PSP) problem and the All Nodes Shortest Cycles (ANSC) problem. Our main contributions are: - Weighted graphs: We present a new three-way trade-off between stretch, space, and query time, offering a natural extension of the classical Thorup–Zwick distance oracle [STOC’01 and JACM’05] to regimes with larger query time. Specifically, for any 0 < r < 1/2 and integer k ≥ 1, we construct a (2k(1 - 2r) - 1)-stretch distance oracle with Õ(m + n^{1 + 1/k}) space and Õ(μ n^r) query time. This construction provides an asymptotic improvement over the classical (2k - 1)-stretch and O(n^{1 + 1/k})-space tradeoff of Thorup and Zwick in sparse graphs, at the cost of increased query time. We also improve upon a result of Dalirrooyfard et al. [FOCS’22], who presented a (2k - 2)-stretch distance oracle with O(m + n^{1 + 1/k}) space and O(μ n^{1/k}) query time. In our oracle we reduce the stretch from (2k - 2) to (2k - 5) while preserving the same space and query time. - Unweighted graphs: We present a (2k - 5, 4 + 2_{odd})-approximation distance oracle with O(n^{1 + 1/k}) space and O(n^{1/k}) query time. This improves upon a (2k - 2, 2_{odd})-approximation distance oracle of Dalirrooyfard et al. [FOCS’22] while maintaining the same space and query time. We also present a distance oracle that given u,v ∈ V returns an estimate d̂(u,v) ≤ d(u,v) + 2⌈ d(u,v) / 3 ⌉ + 2, using O(n^{4/3 + 2ε}) space and O(n^{1 - 3ε}) query time. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first distance oracle that simultaneously achieves a multiplicative stretch < 2, and a space complexity O(n^{1.5 - α}), for some α > 0. - Applications for n-PSP and ANSC: We present an Õ(m^{1 - 1/(k+1)} n)-time algorithm for the n-PSP problem, that for every input pair ⟨s_i,t_i⟩, where i ∈ [n], returns an estimate d̂(s_i, t_i) such that d̂(s_i,t_i) ≤ d(s_i,t_i) + 2⌈d(s_i,t_i)/2k⌉. By allowing a small additive error, this result circumvents the conditional running time lower bound of Ω(m^{2 - 2/(k+1)} ⋅ n^{1/(k+1) - o(1)}), established by Dalirrooyfard et al. [FOCS’22] for achieving (1 + 1/k)-stretch. Additionally, we present an Õ(mn^{1 - 1/k})-time algorithm for the ANSC problem that computes, for every u ∈ V, an estimate ĉ_u such that ĉ_u ≤ SC(u) + 2⌈SC(u)/2(k - 1)⌉, where SC(u) denotes the length of the shortest cycle containing u. This improves upon the Õ(m^{2 - 2/k}n^{1/k})-time algorithm of Dalirrooyfard et al. [FOCS'22], while achieving the same approximation guarantee. We obtain our results by developing several new techniques, among them are the borderline vertices technique and the middle vertex technique, which may be of independent interest.

On the Randomized Locality of Matching Problems in Regular Graphs

Abstract
The main goal in distributed symmetry-breaking is to understand the locality of problems: the radius of the neighborhood that a node must explore to determine its part of a global solution. In this work, we study the locality of matching problems in the family of regular graphs, which is one of the main benchmarks for establishing lower bounds on the locality of symmetry-breaking problems, as well as for obtaining classification results. Our main results are summarized as follows: 1) Approximate matching: We develop randomized algorithms to show that (1 + ε)-approximate matching in regular graphs is truly local, i.e., the locality depends only on ε and is independent of all other graph parameters. Furthermore, as long as the degree Δ is not very small (namely, as long as Δ ≥ poly(1/ε)), this dependence is only logarithmic in 1/ε. This stands in sharp contrast to maximal matching in regular graphs which requires some dependence on the number of nodes n or the degree Δ. 2) Maximal matching: Our techniques further allow us to establish a strong separation between the node-averaged complexity and worst-case complexity of maximal matching in regular graphs, by showing that the former is only O(1). Central to our main technical contribution is a novel martingale-based analysis for the ≈ 40-year-old algorithm by Luby. In particular, our analysis shows that applying one round of Luby’s algorithm on the line graph of a Δ-regular graph results in an almost Δ/2-regular graph.

Testing Sumsets Is Hard

Abstract
A subset S of the Boolean hypercube 𝔽₂ⁿ is a sumset if S = {a + b : a, b ∈ A} for some A ⊆ 𝔽₂ⁿ. Sumsets are central objects of study in additive combinatorics, where they play a role in several of the field’s most important results. We prove a lower bound of Ω(2^{n/2}) for the number of queries needed to test whether a Boolean function f:𝔽₂ⁿ → {0,1} is the indicator function of a sumset, ruling out an efficient testing algorithm for sumsets. Our lower bound for testing sumsets follows from sharp bounds on the related problem of shift testing, which may be of independent interest. We also give a near-optimal {2^{n/2} ⋅ poly(n)}-query algorithm for a smoothed analysis formulation of the sumset refutation problem. Finally, we include a simple proof that the number of different sumsets in 𝔽₂ⁿ is 2^{(1±o(1))2^{n-1}}.

(Multivariate) k-SUM as Barrier to Succinct Computation

Abstract
How does the time complexity of a problem change when the input is given succinctly rather than explicitly? We study this question for several geometric problems defined on a set X of N points in ℤ^d. As succinct representation, we choose a sumset (or Minkowski sum) representation: Instead of receiving X explicitly, we are given sets A,B of n points that define X as A+B = {a+b∣ a ∈ A,b ∈ B}. We investigate the fine-grained complexity of this succinct version for several Õ(N)-time computable geometric primitives. Remarkably, we can tie their complexity tightly to the complexity of corresponding k-SUM problems. Specifically, we introduce as All-ints 3-SUM(n,n,k) the following multivariate, multi-output variant of 3-SUM: given sets A,B of size n and set C of size k, determine for all c ∈ C whether there are a ∈ A and b ∈ B with a+b = c. We obtain the following results: 1) Succinct closest L_∞-pair requires time N^{1-o(1)} under the 3-SUM hypothesis, while succinct furthest L_∞-pair can be solved in time Õ(n). 2) Succinct bichromatic closest L_∞-Pair requires time N^{1-o(1)} iff the 4-SUM hypothesis holds. 3) The following problems are fine-grained equivalent to All-ints 3-SUM(n,n,k): succinct skyline computation in 2D with output size k and succinct batched orthogonal range search with k given ranges. This establishes conditionally tight Õ(min{nk, N})-time algorithms for these problems. We obtain further connections with All-ints 3-SUM(n,n,k) for succinctly computing independent sets in unit interval graphs. Thus, (Multivariate) k-SUM problems precisely capture the barrier for enabling sumset-succinct computation for various geometric primitives.

Lazy B-Trees

Abstract
Lazy search trees (Sandlund & Wild FOCS 2020, Sandlund & Zhang SODA 2022) are sorted dictionaries whose update and query performance smoothly interpolates between that of efficient priority queues and binary search trees - automatically, depending on actual use; no adjustments are necessary to the data structure to realize the cost savings. In this paper, we design lazy B-trees, a variant of lazy search trees suitable for external memory that generalizes the speedup of B-trees over binary search trees wrt. input/output operations to the same smooth interpolation regime. A key technical difficulty to overcome is the lack of a (fully satisfactory) external variant of biased search trees, on which lazy search trees crucially rely. We give a construction for a subset of performance guarantees sufficient to realize external-memory lazy search trees, which we deem of independent interest. As one special case, lazy B-trees can be used as an external-memory priority queue, in which case they are competitive with some tailor-made heaps; indeed, they offer faster decrease-key and insert operations than known data structures.

Abstract
Is detecting a k-clique in k-partite regular (hyper-)graphs as hard as in the general case? Intuition suggests yes, but proving this - especially for hypergraphs - poses notable challenges. Concretely, we consider a strong notion of regularity in h-uniform hypergraphs, where we essentially require that any subset of at most h-1 is incident to a uniform number of hyperedges. Such notions are studied intensively in the combinatorial block design literature. We show that any f(k)n^{g(k)}-time algorithm for detecting k-cliques in such graphs transfers to an f'(k)n^{g(k)}-time algorithm for the general case, establishing a fine-grained equivalence between the h-uniform hyperclique hypothesis and its natural regular analogue. Equipped with this regularization result, we then fully resolve the fine-grained complexity of optimizing Boolean constraint satisfaction problems over assignments with k non-zeros. Our characterization depends on the maximum degree d of a constraint function. Specifically, if d ≤ 1, we obtain a linear-time solvable problem, if d = 2, the time complexity is essentially equivalent to k-clique detection, and if d ≥ 3 the problem requires exhaustive-search time under the 3-uniform hyperclique hypothesis. To obtain our hardness results, the regularization result plays a crucial role, enabling a very convenient approach when applied carefully. We believe that our regularization result will find further applications in the future.

Tight Bounds for Heavy-Hitters and Moment Estimation in the Sliding Window Model

Abstract
We consider the heavy-hitters and F_p moment estimation problems in the sliding window model. For F_p moment estimation with 1 < p ≤ 2, we show that it is possible to give a (1± ε) multiplicative approximation to the F_p moment with 2/3 probability on any given window of size n using Õ(1/(ε^p)log² n + 1/(ε²)log n) bits of space. We complement this result with a lower bound showing that our algorithm gives tight bounds up to factors of log log n and log1/(ε). As a consequence of our F₂ moment estimation algorithm, we show that the heavy-hitters problem can be solved on an arbitrary window using O(1/(ε²)log² n) space which is tight.

Algorithms for the Diverse-k-SAT Problem: The Geometry of Satisfying Assignments

Abstract
Given a k-CNF formula and an integer s ≥ 2, we study algorithms that obtain s solutions to the formula that are as dispersed as possible. For s = 2, this problem of computing the diameter of a k-CNF formula was initiated by Creszenzi and Rossi, who showed strong hardness results even for k = 2. The current best upper bound [Angelsmark and Thapper '04] goes to 4ⁿ as k → ∞. As our first result, we show that this quadratic blow up is not necessary by utilizing the Fast-Fourier transform (FFT) to give a O^*(2ⁿ) time exact algorithm for computing the diameter of any k-CNF formula. For s > 2, the problem was raised in the SAT community (Nadel '11) and several heuristics have been proposed for it, but no algorithms with theoretical guarantees are known. We give exact algorithms using FFT and clique-finding that run in O^*(2^{(s-1)n}) and O^*(s² |Ω_{𝐅}|^{ω ⌈ s/3 ⌉}) respectively, where |Ω_{𝐅}| is the size of the solutions space of the formula 𝐅 and ω is the matrix multiplication exponent. However, current SAT algorithms for finding one solution run in time O^*(2^{ε_{k}n}) for ε_{k} ≈ 1-Θ(1/k), which is much faster than all above run times. As our main result, we analyze two popular SAT algorithms - PPZ (Paturi, Pudlák, Zane '97) and Schöning’s ('02) algorithms, and show that in time poly(s)O^*(2^{ε_{k}n}), they can be used to approximate diameter as well as the dispersion (s > 2) problem. While we need to modify Schöning’s original algorithm for technical reasons, we show that the PPZ algorithm, without any modification, samples solutions in a geometric sense. We believe this geometric sampling property of PPZ may be of independent interest. Finally, we focus on diverse solutions to NP-complete optimization problems, and give bi-approximations running in time poly(s)O^*(2^{ε n}) with ε < 1 for several problems such as Maximum Independent Set, Minimum Vertex Cover, Minimum Hitting Set, Feedback Vertex Set, Multicut on Trees and Interval Vertex Deletion. For all of these problems, all existing exact methods for finding optimal diverse solutions have a runtime with at least an exponential dependence on the number of solutions s. Our methods show that by relaxing to bi-approximations, this dependence on s can be made polynomial.

Reconfiguration of Unit Squares and Disks: PSPACE-Hardness in Simple Settings

Abstract
We study well-known reconfiguration problems. Given a start and a target configuration of geometric objects in a polygon, we wonder whether we can move the objects from the start configuration to the target configuration while avoiding collisions between the objects and staying within the polygon. Problems of this type have been considered since the early 80s by roboticists and computational geometers. In this paper, we study some of the simplest possible variants where the objects are labeled or unlabeled unit squares or unit disks. In unlabeled reconfiguration, the objects are identical, so that any object is allowed to end at any of the targets positions. In the labeled variant, each object has a designated target position. The results for the labeled variants are direct consequences from our insights on the unlabeled versions. We show that it is PSPACE-hard to decide whether there exists a reconfiguration of (unlabeled/labeled) unit squares even in a simple polygon. Previously, it was only known to be PSPACE-hard in a polygon with holes for both the unlabeled and labeled version [Solovey and Halperin, Int. J. Robotics Res. 2016]. Our proof is based on a result of independent interest, namely that reconfiguration between two satisfying assignments of a formula of Monotone-Planar-3-Sat is also PSPACE-complete. The reduction from reconfiguration of Monotone-Planar-3-Sat to reconfiguration of unit squares extends techniques recently developed to show NP-hardness of packing unit squares in a simple polygon [Abrahamsen and Stade, FOCS 2024]. We also show PSPACE-hardness of reconfiguration of (unlabeled/labeled) unit disks in a polygon with holes. Previously, it was known that unlabeled reconfiguration of disks of two different sizes was PSPACE-hard [Brocken, van der Heijden, Kostitsyna, Lo-Wong and Surtel, FUN 2021].

Computing Non-Obtuse Triangulations with Few Steiner Points (CG Challenge)

Abstract
We present the winning implementation of the Seventh Computational Geometry Challenge (CG:SHOP 2025). The task in this challenge was to find non-obtuse triangulations for given planar regions, respecting a given set of constraints consisting of extra vertices and edges that must be part of the triangulation. The goal was to minimize the number of introduced Steiner points. Our approach is to maintain a constrained Delaunay triangulation, for which we repeatedly remove, relocate, or add Steiner points. We use local search to choose the action that improves the triangulation the most, until the resulting triangulation is non-obtuse.

Optimal Motion Planning for Two Square Robots in a Rectilinear Environment

Abstract
Let W ⊂ ℝ² be a rectilinear polygonal environment (that is, a rectilinear polygon potentially with holes) with a total of n vertices, and let A,B be two robots, each modeled as an axis-aligned unit square, that can move rectilinearly inside W. The goal is to compute an optimal collision-free motion plan π for A and B between a given pair of source and target configurations. We study two variants of this problem and obtain the following results. - Min-Sum: Here the goal is to compute a motion plan that minimizes the sum of the lengths of the paths of the robots. We present an O(n⁴log n)-time algorithm for computing an optimal solution to the min-sum problem. This is the first polynomial-time algorithm to compute an optimal, collision-free motion of two robots amid obstacles in a planar polygonal environment. - Min-Makespan: Here the robots can move with at most unit speed, and the goal is to compute a motion plan that minimizes the maximum time taken by a robot to reach its target location. We prove that the min-makespan variant is NP-hard.

Local Enumeration: The Not-All-Equal Case

Abstract
Gurumukhani et al. (CCC'24) proposed the local enumeration problem Enum(k, t) as an approach to break the Super Strong Exponential Time Hypothesis (SSETH): for a natural number k and a parameter t, given an n-variate k-CNF with no satisfying assignment of Hamming weight less than t(n), enumerate all satisfying assignments of Hamming weight exactly t(n). Furthermore, they gave a randomized algorithm for Enum(k, t) and employed new ideas to analyze the first non-trivial case, namely k = 3. In particular, they solved Enum(3, n/2) in expected 1.598ⁿ time. A simple construction shows a lower bound of 6^{n/4} ≈ 1.565ⁿ. In this paper, we show that to break SSETH, it is sufficient to consider a simpler local enumeration problem NAE-Enum(k, t): for a natural number k and a parameter t, given an n-variate k-CNF with no satisfying assignment of Hamming weight less than t(n), enumerate all Not-All-Equal (NAE) solutions of Hamming weight exactly t(n), i.e., those that satisfy and falsify some literal in every clause. We refine the algorithm of Gurumukhani et al. and show that it optimally solves NAE-Enum(3, n/2), namely, in expected time poly(n) ⋅ 6^{n/4}.

Catalytic Communication

Abstract
The study of space-bounded computation has drawn extensively from ideas and results in the field of communication complexity. Catalytic Computation (Buhrman, Cleve, Koucký, Loff and Speelman, STOC 2013) studies the power of bounded space augmented with a pre-filled hard drive that can be used non-destructively during the computation. Presently, many structural questions in this model remain open. Towards a better understanding of catalytic space, we define a model of catalytic communication complexity and prove new upper and lower bounds. In our model, Alice and Bob share a blackboard with a tiny number of free bits, and a larger section with an arbitrary initial configuration. They must jointly compute a function of their inputs, communicating only via the blackboard, and must always reset the blackboard to its initial configuration. We prove several upper and lower bounds: 1) We characterize the simplest nontrivial model, that of one bit of free space and three rounds, in terms of 𝔽₂ rank. In particular, we give natural problems that are solvable with a minimal-sized blackboard that require near-maximal (randomized) communication complexity, and vice versa. 2) We show that allowing constantly many free bits, as opposed to one, allows an exponential improvement on the size of the blackboard for natural problems. To do so, we connect the problem to existence questions in extremal graph theory. 3) We give tight connections between our model and standard notions of non-uniform catalytic computation. Using this connection, we show that with an arbitrary constant number of rounds and bits of free space, one can compute all functions in TC⁰. We view this model as a step toward understanding the value of filled space in computation.
