General Multiplicative Spanners in Practice

Abstract
Given an undirected graph G with edge weights and lengths, a minimum α-spanner is a least-weight subgraph H ⊆ G that preserves distances w.r.t. the lengths between all node pairs up to a factor of α. Literature often takes the simplifying assumption of a single (coupled) edge function for weights and lengths. For such instances, several exact and non-exact algorithms are known and have been thoroughly evaluated in practice. However, many practical instances have decoupled form, as their weights and lengths are generally independent. Due to the increased complexity, only few (and even fewer practical) algorithms are able to guarantee low-weight solutions. This prompts practitioners to force their naturally decoupled instances into a coupled format, forsaking any quality guarantee. We implement several exact, approximative and heuristic algorithms for decoupled α-spanners, and use algorithm engineering to speed them up in practice. Our hypothesis-driven experiments evaluate their performance w.r.t. solution quality and speed. Generally, many practical instances can indeed be solved exactly within reasonable time, while LP-based approximation algorithms are not worthwhile. We find that standard greedy algorithms often yield acceptable results, but there are also practical instances for which they yield arbitrarily poor solutions. Here, augmented greedy variations offer a good compromise between solution quality and speed.

Abstract
A Euclidean noncrossing Steiner (1+ε)-spanner for a point set P ⊂ ℝ² is a planar straight-line graph that, for any two points a, b ∈ P, contains a path whose length is at most 1+ε times the Euclidean distance between a and b. We construct a Euclidean noncrossing Steiner (1+ε)-spanner with O(n/ε^{3/2}) edges for any set of n points in the plane. This result improves upon the previous best upper bound of O(n/ε⁴) obtained nearly three decades ago. We also establish an almost matching lower bound: There exist n points in the plane for which any Euclidean noncrossing Steiner (1+ε)-spanner has Ω_μ(n/ε^{3/2-μ}) edges for any μ > 0. Our lower bound uses recent generalizations of the Szemerédi-Trotter theorem to disk-tube incidences in geometric measure theory.

Computing the Intrinsic Delaunay Triangulation of a Closed Polyhedral Surface

Authors: Loïc Dubois

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 367, 42nd International Symposium on Computational Geometry (SoCG 2026)

Abstract
Every surface that is intrinsically polyhedral can be represented by a portalgon: a collection of polygons in the Euclidean plane with some pairs of equally long edges abstractly identified. While this representation is arguably simpler than meshes (flat polygons in ℝ³ forming a surface), it has unbounded happiness: a shortest path in the surface may visit the same polygon arbitrarily many times. This pathological behavior is an obstacle towards efficient algorithms. On the other hand, Löffler, Ophelders, Staals, and Silveira [SoCG 2023] recently proved that the (intrinsic) Delaunay triangulations have bounded happiness. In this paper, given a closed polyhedral surface S, represented by a triangular portalgon T, we provide an algorithm to compute the Delaunay triangulation of S whose vertices are the singularities of S (the points whose surrounding angle is distinct from 2π). The time complexity of our algorithm is polynomial in the number of triangles and in the logarithm of the aspect ratio r of T. Within our model of computation, we show that the dependency in log r is unavoidable. Our algorithm can be used to pre-process a triangular portalgon before computing shortest paths on its surface, and to determine whether the surfaces of two triangular portalgons are isometric.

Interactive Uniform Floodlight Illumination and Rotating Rays Voronoi Diagrams (Media Exposition)

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 367, 42nd International Symposium on Computational Geometry (SoCG 2026)

Abstract
Floodlight illumination problems are art-gallery variants, where a target domain needs to be illuminated by guards, each associated with a field of view. The rotating rays Voronoi diagram is a Voronoi diagram with rays as sites under the angular distance. There is a natural connection of this Voronoi structure with the problem of finding the minimum aperture such that a given set of uniform aperture floodlights illuminates a target domain. In this work we present an interactive visualization software for such problems, supporting different angular distances, namely, oriented and unoriented versions, and for different domains, namely, the plane and simple polygons.

Abstract
Higher-order Voronoi diagrams and Delaunay mosaics in polygonal metrics have only recently been studied, yet no tools exist for visualizing them. We introduce a tool that fills this gap, providing dynamic interactive software for visualizing higher-order Voronoi diagrams and Delaunay mosaics along with clustering and tools for exploring overlap and outer regions in the Hilbert polygonal metric. We prove that k-th order Voronoi cells are not always star-shaped and establish complexity bounds for our algorithm, which generates all order Voronoi diagrams at once. Our software unifies and extends previous tools for visualizing the Hilbert, Funk, and Thompson geometries.

Delaunay Triangulations with Predictions

Abstract
We investigate algorithms with predictions in computational geometry, specifically focusing on the basic problem of computing 2D Delaunay triangulations. Given a set P of n points in the plane and a triangulation G that serves as a "prediction" of the Delaunay triangulation, we would like to use G to compute the correct Delaunay triangulation DT(P) more quickly when G is "close" to DT(P). We obtain a variety of results of this type, under different deterministic and probabilistic settings, including the following: 1) Define D to be the number of edges in G that are not in DT(P). We present a deterministic algorithm to compute DT(P) from G in O(n + Dlog³ n) time, and a randomized algorithm in O(n+Dlog n) expected time, the latter of which is optimal in terms of D. 2) Let R be a random subset of the edges of DT(P), where each edge is chosen independently with probability ρ. Suppose G is any triangulation of P that contains R. We present an algorithm to compute DT(P) from G in O(nlog log n + nlog(1/ρ)) time with high probability. 3) Define d_{vio} to be the maximum number of points of P strictly inside the circumcircle of a triangle in G (the number is 0 if G is equal to DT(P)). We present a deterministic algorithm to compute DT(P) from G in O(nlog^*n + nlog d_{vio}) time. We also obtain results in similar settings for related problems such as 2D Euclidean minimum spanning trees, and hope that our work will open up a fruitful line of future research.

A Simple Algorithm for Combinatorial n-Fold ILPs Using the Steinitz Lemma

Authors: Sushmita Gupta, Pallavi Jain, Sanjay Seetharaman, and Meirav Zehavi

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 358, 20th International Symposium on Parameterized and Exact Computation (IPEC 2025)

Abstract
We present an algorithm for a class of n-fold ILPs whose existing algorithms in literature are often either (1) based on the augmentation framework where one starts with an arbitrary solution and then iteratively moves towards an optimal solution by solving appropriate programs; or (2) require solving a linear relaxation of the program; or (3) are based on decomposition/proximity based arguments. Combinatorial n-fold ILPs is a class of n-fold ILPs introduced and studied by Knop et al. [MP2020] that captures several other problems in a variety of domains. We present a simple and direct algorithm that solves combinatorial n-fold ILPs with unbounded non-negative variables via an application of the Steinitz lemma. Depending on the structure of the input ILP, we also improve upon the existing algorithms in the literature in terms of the running time, thereby showing an improvement that mirrors the one shown by Rohwedder [ICALP2025] contemporaneously and independently.

New Algorithm for Combinatorial n-Folds and Applications

Authors: Klaus Jansen, Kai Kahler, Lis Pirotton, and Malte Tutas

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 358, 20th International Symposium on Parameterized and Exact Computation (IPEC 2025)

Abstract
Block-structured integer linear programs (ILPs) play an important role in various application fields. We address n-fold ILPs where the matrix 𝒜 has a specific structure, i.e., where the blocks in the lower part of 𝒜 consist only of the row vectors (1,… ,1). In this paper, we propose an approach tailored to exactly these combinatorial n-folds. We utilize a divide and conquer approach to separate the original problem such that the right-hand side iteratively decreases in size. We show that this decrease in size can be calculated such that we only need to consider a bounded amount of possible right-hand sides. This, in turn, lets us efficiently combine solutions of the smaller right-hand sides to solve the original problem. We can decide the feasibility of, and also optimally solve, such problems in time (n r Δ)^O(r) log(‖b‖_∞), where n is the number of blocks, r the number of rows in the upper blocks and Δ = ‖A‖_∞. We complement the algorithm by discussing applications of the n-fold ILPs with the specific structure we require. We consider the problems of (i) scheduling on uniform machines, (ii) closest string and (iii) (graph) imbalance. Regarding (i), our algorithm results in running times of p_max^O(d)|I|^O(1), matching a lower bound derived via ETH. For (ii) we achieve running times matching the current state-of-the-art in the general case. In contrast to the state-of-the-art, our result can leverage a bounded number of column-types to yield an improved running time. For (iii), we improve the parameter dependency on the size of the vertex cover.

Parallel Complexity of Depth-First-Search and Maximal Path in Restricted Graph Classes

Abstract
Constructing a Depth First Search (DFS) tree is a fundamental graph problem, whose parallel complexity is still not settled. Reif showed parallel intractability of lex-first DFS. In contrast, randomized parallel algorithms (and more recently, deterministic quasipolynomial parallel algorithms) are known for constructing a DFS tree in general (di)graphs. However a deterministic parallel algorithm for DFS in general graphs remains an elusive goal. Working towards this, a series of works gave deterministic NC algorithms for DFS in planar graphs and digraphs. We further extend these results to more general graph classes, by providing NC algorithms for (di)graphs of bounded genus, and for undirected H-minor-free graphs where H is a fixed graph with at most one crossing. For the case of (di)graphs of bounded treewidth, we further improve the complexity to a Logspace bound. Constructing a maximal path is a simpler problem (that reduces to DFS) for which no deterministic parallel bounds are known for general graphs. For planar graphs a bound of O(log n) parallel time on a CRCW PRAM (thus in NC²) is known. We improve this bound to Logspace.

Fault-Tolerant Approximate Distance Oracles with a Source Set

Authors: Dipan Dey and Telikepalli Kavitha

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 360, 45th IARCS Annual Conference on Foundations of Software Technology and Theoretical Computer Science (FSTTCS 2025)

Abstract
Our input is an undirected weighted graph G = (V,E) on n vertices along with a source set S ⊆ V. The problem is to preprocess G and build a compact data structure such that upon query Qu(s,v,f) where (s,v) ∈ S×V and f is any faulty edge, we can quickly find a good estimate (i.e., within a small multiplicative stretch) of the s-v distance in G-f. We use a fault-tolerant ST-distance oracle from the work of Bilò et al. (STACS 2018) to construct an S×V approximate distance oracle or sourcewise approximate distance oracle of size Õ(|S|n + n^{3/2}) with multiplicative stretch at most 5. We construct another fault-tolerant sourcewise approximate distance oracle of size Õ(|S|n + n^{4/3}) with multiplicative stretch at most 13. Both the oracles have O(1) query answering time.

Abstract
The Directed Traveling Salesman Problem (DTSP) is a variant of the classical Traveling Salesman Problem in which the edges in the graph are directed and a vertex and edge can be visited multiple times. The goal is to find a directed closed walk of minimum length (or total weight) that visits every vertex of the given graph at least once. In a yet more general version, Directed Waypoint Routing Problem (DWRP), some vertices are marked as terminals and we are only required to visit all terminals. Furthermore, each edge has its capacity bounding the number of times this edge can be used by a solution. While both problems (and many other variants of TSP) were extensively investigated, mostly from the approximation point of view, there are surprisingly few results concerning the parameterized complexity. Our starting point is the result of Marx et al. [APPROX/RANDOM 2016] who proved that DTSP is W[1]-hard parameterized by distance to pathwidth 3. In this paper we aim to initiate the systematic complexity study of variants of Directed Traveling Salesman Problem with respect to various, mostly structural, parameters. We show that DWRP is FPT parameterized by the solution size, the feedback edge number and the vertex integrity of the underlying undirected graph. Furthermore, the problem is XP parameterized by treewidth. On the complexity side, we show that the problem is W[1]-hard parameterized by the distance to constant treedepth.

Structural Parameterizations of Simultaneous Planarity

Abstract
Given a set of graphs on the same vertex set, the problem Simultaneous Embedding With Fixed Edges (SEFE) asks, whether there exist planar drawings of all input graphs, such that every pair of drawings coincides on their shared subgraph. It is known that SEFE is NP-complete [Elisabeth Gassner et al., 2006], even in the so-called sunflower case, where all pairs of input graphs have the same shared graph G_∩ [Marcus Schaefer, 2012]. Fink, Pfretzschner, and Rutter [Simon D. Fink et al., 2023] recently initiated the study of the parameterized complexity of SEFE in the sunflower case, mainly focusing on structural parameters of G_∩. In this work, we shift the focus towards parameters of the union graph G_∪ that contains the edges of all input graphs. On the positive side, we establish fixed-parameter tractability for the problem with respect to the feedback edge set number of G_∪. We complement this result by showing that it, surprisingly, remains NP-complete even if G_∪ has constant vertex cover number. These results settle two open questions posed by Fink et al. [Simon D. Fink et al., 2023].

Planar Stories of Graph Drawings: Algorithms and Experiments

Abstract
We address the problem of computing a dynamic visualization of a geometric graph G as a sequence of frames. Each frame shows only a portion of the graph but their union covers G entirely. The two main requirements of our dynamic visualization are: (i) guaranteeing drawing stability, so to preserve the user’s mental map; (ii) keeping the visual complexity of each frame low. To satisfy the first requirement, we never change the position of the vertices. Regarding the second requirement, we avoid edge crossings in each frame. More precisely, in the first frame we visualize a suitable subset of non-crossing edges; in each subsequent frame, exactly one new edge enters the visualization and all the edges that cross with it are deleted. We call such a sequence of frames a planar story of G. Our goal is to find a planar story whose minimum number of edges contemporarily displayed is maximized (i.e., a planar story that maximizes the minimum frame size). Besides studying our model from a theoretical point of view, we also design and experimentally compare different algorithms, both exact techniques and heuristics. These algorithms provide an array of alternative trade-offs between efficiency and effectiveness, also depending on the structure of the input graph.

Approach of Agents with Restricted Fuel Tanks

Authors: Adam Ganczorz, Tomasz Jurdzinski, Andrzej Pelc, and Grzegorz Stachowiak

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 356, 39th International Symposium on Distributed Computing (DISC 2025)

Abstract
Two mobile agents, modelled as points in the plane moving at speed 1, have to get at a distance at most 1 from each other. This task is known as approach or rendezvous in the plane. An adversary initially places both agents at distinct points, called their bases, at distance at most D, and wakes them up at possibly different times. Each of the agents has a fuel tank that allows them to traverse a trajectory of length D, and can be replenished at the base of the agent. The algorithm of each agent consists of a series of actions which are either moves at a chosen distance in a chosen direction or staying idle for a chosen period of time. For a given instance of the approach task, the execution time of an approach algorithm is the length of the period between the start of the later agent and the moment of approach. Our goal is to design approach algorithms with optimal time complexity. We consider two independent coherence assumptions. One of them is time coherence, i.e., agents start simultaneously, and the other is orientation coherence: agents have compatible compasses, showing the same North direction. Our main result is establishing optimal time complexity of the approach problem with restricted fuel tanks. It turns out that this optimal complexity heavily depends on the above coherence assumptions. If both of them are satisfied then approach can be performed in time O(D²) and we show that this complexity is optimal. If any of the two coherence assumptions is missing then approach can be performed in time O(D²√D) and we prove that this order of magnitude cannot be improved. Our main technical contribution are lower bounds showing that, for each of the considered scenarios, our fairly natural approach algorithms are, in fact, optimal.

Constructing Long Paths in Graph Streams

Authors: Christian Konrad and Chhaya Trehan

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 351, 33rd Annual European Symposium on Algorithms (ESA 2025)

Abstract
In the graph stream model of computation, an algorithm processes the edges of an n-vertex input graph in one or more sequential passes while using a memory that is sublinear in the input size. The streaming model poses significant challenges for algorithmically constructing long paths. Many known algorithms that are tasked with extending an existing path as a subroutine require an entire pass over the input to add a single additional edge. This raises a fundamental question: Are multiple passes inherently necessary to construct paths of non-trivial lengths, or can a single pass suffice? To address this question, we systematically study the Longest Path problem in the one-pass streaming model. In this problem, given a desired approximation factor α, the objective is to compute a path of length at least lp(G)/α, where lp(G) is the length of a longest path in the input graph G. We study the problem in the insertion-only and the insertion-deletion streaming models, and we give algorithms as well as space lower bounds for both undirected and directed graphs. Our results are: 1) We show that for undirected graphs, in both the insertion-only and the insertion-deletion models, there are semi-streaming algorithms, i.e., algorithms that use space O(n poly log n), that compute a path of length at least d/3 with high probability, where d is the average degree of the input graph. These algorithms can also yield an α-approximation to Longest Path using space Õ(n²/α). 2) Next, we show that such a result cannot be achieved for directed graphs, even in the insertion-only model. We show that computing a (n^{1-o(1)})-approximation to Longest Path in directed graphs in the insertion-only model requires space Ω(n²). This result is in line with recent results that demonstrate that processing directed graphs is often significantly harder than undirected graphs in the streaming model. 3) We further complement our results with two additional lower bounds. First, we show that semi-streaming space is insufficient for small constant factor approximations to Longest Path for undirected graphs in the insertion-only model. Last, in undirected graphs in the insertion-deletion model, we show that computing an α-approximation requires space Ω(n²/α³).
