Computational Hardness of Estimating Quantum Entropies via Binary Entropy Bounds

Abstract
We investigate the computational hardness of estimating the quantum α-Rényi entropy S^𝚁_α(ρ) = (ln Tr(ρ^α))/(1-α) and the quantum q-Tsallis entropy S^𝚃_q(ρ) = (1-Tr(ρ^q))/(q-1), both converging to the von Neumann entropy as the order approaches 1. The promise problems Quantum α-Rényi Entropy Approximation (RényiQEA_α) and Quantum q-Tsallis Entropy Approximation (TsallisQEA_q) ask whether S^𝚁_α(ρ) or S^𝚃_q(ρ), respectively, is at least τ_Y or at most τ_N, where τ_Y - τ_N is typically a positive constant. Previous hardness results cover only the von Neumann entropy (order 1) and some cases of the quantum q-Tsallis entropy, while existing approaches do not readily extend to other orders. We establish that for all positive real orders, the rank-2 variants Rank2RényiQEA_α and Rank2TsallisQEA_q are BQP-hard. Combined with prior (rank-dependent) quantum query algorithms in Wang, Guan, Liu, Zhang, and Ying (TIT 2024), Wang, Zhang, and Li (TIT 2024), and Liu and Wang (SODA 2025), our results imply: - For all real order α > 0 and 0 < q ≤ 1, LowRankRényiQEA_α and LowRankTsallisQEA_q are BQP-complete, where both are restricted versions of RényiQEA_α and TsallisQEA_q with ρ of polynomial rank. - For all real order q > 1, TsallisQEA_q is BQP-complete. Our hardness results stem from reductions based on new inequalities relating the α-Rényi or q-Tsallis binary entropies of different orders, where the reductions differ substantially from previous approaches, and the inequalities are also of independent interest.

Mining Inter-Document Argument Structures in Scientific Papers for an Argument Web

Abstract
In Argument Mining, predicting argumentative relations between texts (or spans) remains one of the most challenging aspects, even more so in the cross-document setting. This paper makes three key contributions to advance research in this domain. We first extend an existing dataset, the Sci-Arg corpus, by annotating it with explicit inter-document argumentative relations, thereby allowing arguments to be distributed over several documents forming an Argument Web; these new annotations are published using Semantic Web technologies (RDF, OWL). Second, we explore and evaluate three automated approaches for predicting these inter-document argumentative relations, establishing critical baselines on the new dataset. We find that a simple classifier based on discourse indicators with access to context outperforms neural methods. Third, we conduct a comparative analysis of these approaches for both intra- and inter-document settings, identifying statistically significant differences in results that indicate the necessity of distinguishing between these two scenarios. Our findings highlight significant challenges in this complex domain and open crucial avenues for future research on the Argument Web of Science, particularly for those interested in leveraging Semantic Web technologies and knowledge graphs to understand scholarly discourse. With this, we provide the first stepping stones in the form of a benchmark dataset, three baseline methods, and an initial analysis for a systematic exploration of this field relevant to the Web of Data and Science.

ASP Essentials: Modelling and Efficient Solving (Invited Paper)

Abstract
Answer Set Programming (ASP) is a logic-based Knowledge Representation and Reasoning (KRR) paradigm that facilitates rapid prototyping of solutions for complex problems. It is particularly effective for tackling Deep Reasoning tasks involving exponentially large search spaces, such as combinatorial search and optimization. While getting started with ASP is relatively easy, mastering its advanced constructs and scaling solutions to real-world problem sizes can be challenging. This paper provides an introduction to ASP, guiding the reader from the fundamentals of the language to the application of programming methodologies and the computation of answer sets. Beyond the core framework, the paper also examines selected extensions of ASP that enable the modeling of complex problems, as well as compilation techniques designed to enhance solving efficiency. Furthermore, it mentions some recent tools that combine ASP with LLMs.

Amnesiac Flooding: Easy to Break, Hard to Escape

Abstract
Broadcast is a central problem in distributed computing. Recently, Hussak and Trehan [PODC'19/ STACS'20/DC'23] proposed a stateless broadcasting protocol (Amnesiac Flooding), which was surprisingly proven to terminate in asymptotically optimal time (linear in the diameter of the network). However, it remains unclear: (i) Are there other stateless terminating broadcast algorithms with the desirable properties of Amnesiac Flooding, (ii) How robust is Amnesiac Flooding with respect to faults? In this paper we make progress on both of these fronts. Under a reasonable restriction (obliviousness to message content) additional to the fault-free synchronous model, we prove that Amnesiac Flooding is the only strictly stateless deterministic protocol that can achieve terminating broadcast. We achieve this by identifying four natural properties of a terminating broadcast protocol that Amnesiac Flooding uniquely satisfies. In contrast, we prove that even minor relaxations of any of these four criteria allow the construction of other terminating broadcast protocols. On the other hand, we prove that Amnesiac Flooding can become non-terminating or non-broadcasting, even if we allow just one node to drop a single message on a single edge in a single round. As a tool for proving this, we focus on the set of all configurations of transmissions between nodes in the network, and obtain a dichotomy characterizing the configurations, starting from which, Amnesiac Flooding terminates. Additionally, we characterise the structure of sets of Byzantine agents capable of forcing non-termination or non-broadcast of the protocol on arbitrary networks.

Strategic Analysis of Just-In-Time Liquidity Provision in Concentrated Liquidity Market Makers

Abstract
Liquidity providers (LPs) are essential figures in the operation of automated market makers (AMMs); in exchange for transaction fees, LPs lend the liquidity that allows AMMs to operate. While many prior works have studied the incentive structures of LPs in general, we currently lack a principled understanding of a special class of LPs known as Just-In-Time (JIT) LPs. These are strategic agents who momentarily supply liquidity for a single swap, in an attempt to extract disproportionately high fees relative to the remaining passive LPs. This paper provides the first formal, transaction-level model of JIT liquidity provision for a widespread class of AMMs known as Concentrated Liquidity Market Makers (CLMMs), as seen in Uniswap V3, for instance. We characterize the landscape of price impact and fee allocation in these systems, formulate and analyze a non-linear optimization problem faced by JIT LPs, and prove the existence of an optimal strategy. By fitting our optimal solution for JIT LPs to real-world CLMMs, we observe that in liquidity pools (particularly those with risky assets), there is a significant gap between observed and optimal JIT behavior. Existing JIT LPs often fail to account for price impact; doing so, we estimate they could increase earnings by up to 69% on average over small time windows. We also show that JIT liquidity, when deployed strategically, can improve market efficiency reducing slippage for traders, albeit at the cost of eroding passive LP profits by up to 44% per trade on average.

On Estimating the Quantum 𝓁_α Distance

Abstract
We study the computational complexity of estimating the quantum 𝓁_α distance T_α(ρ₀,ρ₁), defined via the Schatten α-norm ‖A‖_α := tr(|A|^α)^{1/α}, given poly(n)-size state-preparation circuits of n-qubit quantum states ρ₀ and ρ₁. This quantity serves as a lower bound on the trace distance for α > 1. For any constant α > 1, we develop an efficient rank-independent quantum estimator for T_α(ρ₀,ρ₁) with time complexity poly(n), achieving an exponential speedup over the prior best results of exp(n) due to Wang, Guan, Liu, Zhang, and Ying (IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory 2024). Our improvement leverages efficiently computable uniform polynomial approximations of signed positive power functions within quantum singular value transformation, thereby eliminating the dependence on the rank of the states. Our quantum algorithm reveals a dichotomy in the computational complexity of the Quantum State Distinguishability Problem with Schatten α-norm (QSD_α), which involves deciding whether T_α(ρ₀,ρ₁) is at least 2/5 or at most 1/5. This dichotomy arises between the cases of constant α > 1 and α = 1: - For any 1+Ω(1) ≤ α ≤ O(1), QSD_α is BQP-complete. - For any 1 ≤ α ≤ 1+1/n, QSD_α is QSZK-complete, implying that no efficient quantum estimator for T_α(ρ₀,ρ₁) exists unless BQP = QSZK. The hardness results follow from reductions based on new rank-dependent inequalities for the quantum 𝓁_α distance with 1 ≤ α ≤ ∞, which are of independent interest.

Efficient Contractions of Dynamic Graphs - With Applications

Abstract
A non-trivial minimum cut (NMC) sparsifier is a multigraph Ĝ that preserves all non-trivial minimum cuts of a given undirected graph G. We introduce a flexible data structure for fully dynamic graphs that can efficiently provide an NMC sparsifier upon request at any point during the sequence of updates. We employ simple dynamic forest data structures to achieve a fast from-scratch construction of the sparsifier at query time. Based on the strength of the adversary and desired type of time bounds, the data structure comes with different guarantees. Specifically, let G be a fully dynamic simple graph with n vertices and minimum degree δ. Then our data structure supports an insertion/deletion of an edge to/from G in n^o(1) worst-case time. Furthermore, upon request, it can return w.h.p. an NMC sparsifier of G that has O(n/δ) vertices and O(n) edges, in Ô(n) time. The probabilistic guarantees hold against an adaptive adversary. Alternatively, the update and query times can be improved to Õ(1) and Õ(n) respectively, if amortized-time guarantees are sufficient, or if the adversary is oblivious. Throughout the paper, we use Õ to hide polylogarithmic factors and Ô to hide subpolynomial (i.e., n^o(1)) factors. We discuss two applications of our new data structure. First, it can be used to efficiently report a cactus representation of all minimum cuts of a fully dynamic simple graph. Building this cactus for the NMC sparsifier instead of the original graph allows for a construction time that is sublinear in the number of edges. Against an adaptive adversary, we can with high probability output the cactus representation in worst-case Ô(n) time. Second, our data structure allows us to efficiently compute the maximal k-edge-connected subgraphs of undirected simple graphs, by repeatedly applying a minimum cut algorithm on the NMC sparsifier. Specifically, we can compute with high probability the maximal k-edge-connected subgraphs of a simple graph with n vertices and m edges in Õ(m+n²/k) time. This improves the best known time bounds for k = Ω(n^{1/8}) and naturally extends to the case of fully dynamic graphs.

Formalizing Colimits in 𝒞at

Abstract
Certain results involving "higher structures" are not currently accessible to computer formalization because the prerequisite ∞-category theory has not been formalized. To support future work on formalizing ∞-category theory in Lean’s mathematics library, we formalize some fundamental constructions involving the 1-category of categories. Specifically, we construct the left adjoint to the nerve embedding of categories into simplicial sets, defining the homotopy category functor. We prove further that this adjunction is reflective, which allows us to conclude that 𝒞at has colimits. To our knowledge this is the first formalized proof that the nerve functor is a fully faithful right adjoint and that the category of categories is cocomplete.

Digital Health for Space: Towards Prevention, Training, Empowerment, and Autonomy

Abstract
Future long-duration and deep-space missions will rely on digital health technologies to ensure the health and safety of the crew, as well as to enable the required mission autonomy. This position paper redefines the current paradigms of digital health by emphasizing prevention, self-management, and individual empowerment for health as central challenges for both space and terrestrial medicine. We focus on future mission scenarios and highlight the potential of co-evolving digital health and related technologies, particularly sensing, artificial intelligence (AI), and human-computer interaction (HCI), across the continuum of space medicine: from astronaut selection and training to prevention, diagnostics, therapy, rehabilitation, and long-term care. Future digital health technologies can respond to pressing needs arising from limited medical infrastructure, rising care costs, and increasing demands on healthcare systems in space and on Earth. To structure research and development needs, we introduce a framework with four autonomy levels based on mission distance and communication latency (Earth orbit, Lunar Gateway and Moon vicinity, Mars, and deep space) that illustrate how mission context constrains medical support and dictates system requirements. Using the Lunar Orbital Platform-Gateway as a near-future reference, we discuss how growing communication delays demand greater onboard autonomy and new telemedical strategies. Within the proposed framework, we integrate solutions built around AI-supported decision making, multimodal monitoring, and adaptive HCI, which should be co-designed through human-centered methods to form a cohesive health management ecosystem. The framework opens up synergies for proactive and trustworthy health support under isolation and limited ground contact. The paper consolidates current technological readiness and strategic challenges, offering guidance for space health research and policy, with clear translational benefits for terrestrial care delivery.

Unbound Human-Machine Interfaces for Interaction in Weightless Environments

Abstract
User interfaces are subject to the rules of physics (e.g., Newton and Archimedes' laws) relevant to the environment they are in. As such, most interfaces and interaction techniques have been designed for Earth surface. However, when interacting with technology in weightless environments, such as in space, both human and machine will be subject to different physical constraints. For instance, underwater or in Space, people can experience spatial disorientation, which will in turn affect how they use a system. This position paper conceptualizes unbound Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs) as interfaces where either, or both, human and machine are located beyond Earth surface. In particular, it describes how traditional HCI needs to be rethought for interaction in weightless environments and how theoretical models such as joint cognition can support future developments of unbound interfaces.

A Research Framework to Develop a Real-Time Synchrony Index to Monitor Team Cohesion and Performance in Long-Duration Space Exploration

Abstract
As humanity prepares for long-distance space exploration, optimizing group performance, the ability of a group to achieve its goals efficiently, is critical. Astronaut crews will endure isolation, confinement, and operational stress, making group synchrony - the alignment of behaviors, emotions, and physiological states - a key factor in mission success. Synchrony influences team cohesion, performance, and resilience, necessitating effective crew management strategies. This paper proposes a framework for a real-time, unobtrusive index of group synchrony to support astronauts and mission control. Research indicates that team cohesion fluctuates in isolated environments, with reduced communication and interpersonal conflicts emerging over time. A system tracking synchrony could mitigate these issues, providing proactive support and improving remote management. Additionally, it could serve as a cognitive and physiological feedback tool for astronauts and a decision-making aid for mission control, enhancing well-being and efficiency. Our approach integrates behavioral and physiological synchrony measures to assess team cohesion and performance. We propose a multi-modal synchrony index combining movement coordination, communication patterns, and physiological signals such as heart rate, electrodermal activity, and EEG. This index will be validated across different tasks to ensure applicability across diverse mission scenarios. By developing a robust synchrony index, we address a fundamental challenge in space missions: sustaining team effectiveness under extreme conditions. Beyond space exploration, our findings could benefit high-risk, high-isolation teams in submarine crews, polar expeditions, and remote research groups. Our collaboration with the Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales, the Institut de Médecine et de Physiologie Spatiales, and the Toulouse University Hospital marks the first step, with experimental data collection starting this year. Ultimately, this research fosters more adaptive, responsive, and resilient teams for future space missions.

Movement in Low Gravity (MoLo) – LUNA: Biomechanical Modelling to Mitigate Lunar Surface Operation Risks

Abstract
The Artemis programme seeks to develop and test concepts, hardware and approaches to support long term habitation of the Lunar surface, and future missions to Mars. In preparation for the Artemis missions determination of tasks to be performed, the functional requirements of such tasks and as mission duration extends whether physiological deconditioning becomes functionally significant, compromising the crew member’s ability to perform critical tasks on the surface, and/or upon return to earth [MoLo-LUNA – leveraging the Molo programme (and several other activities) - could become a key supporting activity for LUNA incl. validation of the Puppeteer offloading system itself via creation of a complementary MoLo-LUNA-LAB. Furthermore, the MoLo-LUNA programme could become a key facilitator of simulator suit instrumentation/definition, broader astronaut training activities and mission architecture development – including Artemis mission simulations. By employing a Puppeteer system external to the LUNA chamber hall it will optimise utilisation and cost-effectiveness of LUNA, and as such represents a critical service to future LUNA stakeholders. Furthermore, MoLo-LUNA would generate a unique data set that can be leveraged to predict de-conditioning on the Lunar surface - and thereby optimise functionality, and minimise mission risk – including informing the need for, and prescription of exercise countermeasures on the Lunar Surface and in transit. Thus, MoLo-LUNA offers a unique opportunity to place LUNA, and ESA as a key ongoing provider of evidence to define, optimise and support crew Artemis surface missions.

Abstract
Contexts of use are a central concept of research and development in human-computer interaction (HCI). Their in-depth understanding is a key for usable and acceptable computer-aided solutions and a particular challenge in connection with space exploration. It is necessary to examine which of the established approaches can be implemented here and where methodological adjustments are necessary. This article provides a systematic consideration of three perspectives to understand space contexts of use: theory and literature, imparted experiential knowledge, and personal experience. Potentials and risks are evaluated. The findings of HCI research in safety-critical contexts and under COVID-19 conditions that can be transferred to space HCI are taken up.

Quantum Property Testing in Sparse Directed Graphs

Abstract
We initiate the study of quantum property testing in sparse directed graphs, and more particularly in the unidirectional model, where the algorithm is allowed to query only the outgoing edges of a vertex. In the classical unidirectional model, the problem of testing k-star-freeness, and more generally k-source-subgraph-freeness, is almost maximally hard for large k. We prove that this problem has almost quadratic advantage in the quantum setting. Moreover, we show that this advantage is nearly tight, by showing a quantum lower bound using the method of dual polynomials on an intermediate problem for a new, property testing version of the k-collision problem that was not studied before. To illustrate that not all problems in graph property testing admit such a quantum speedup, we consider the problem of 3-colorability in the related undirected bounded-degree model, when graphs are now undirected. This problem is maximally hard to test classically, and we show that also quantumly it requires a linear number of queries.

In-Browser C++ Interpreter for Lightweight Intelligent Programming Learning Environments

Abstract
The paper presents a browser native C++ interpreter integrated into an AI-assisted educational platform designed to enhance programming learning in formal education. The interpreter leverages Parsing Expression Grammars (PEG) to generate Abstract Syntax Trees (AST) and executes C++ code using a TypeScript-based runtime. The system supports key C++ features, including pointer arithmetic, function overloading, and namespace resolution, and emulates memory management via reference-counted JavaScript objects. Integrated within a web-based learning environment, it provides automated feedback, error explanations, and code quality evaluations. The evaluation involved 4582 students in three difficulty levels and feedback from 14 teachers. The results include high system usability scale (SUS) scores (avg. 83.5) and WBLT learning effectiveness scores (avg. 4.58/5). Interpreter performance testing in 65 cases averaged under 10 ms per task, confirming its practical applicability to school curricula. The system supports SCORM and PWA deployment, enabling LMS-independent usage. The work introduces a technical innovation in browser-based C++ execution and a scalable framework for LLM-enhanced programming pedagogy.
