Optimizing Wiggle in Storylines

Authors: Alexander Dobler, Tim Hegemann, Martin Nöllenburg, and Alexander Wolff

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 357, 33rd International Symposium on Graph Drawing and Network Visualization (GD 2025)

Abstract
A storyline visualization shows interactions between characters over time. Each character is represented by an x-monotone curve. Time is mapped to the x-axis, and groups of characters that interact at a particular point t in time must be ordered consecutively in the y-dimension at x = t. The predominant objective in storyline optimization so far has been the minimization of crossings between (blocks of) characters. Building on this work, we investigate another important, but less studied quality criterion, namely the minimization of wiggle, i.e., the amount of vertical movement of the characters over time. Given a storyline instance together with an ordering of the characters at any point in time, we show that wiggle count minimization is NP-complete. In contrast, we provide algorithms based on mathematical programming to solve linear wiggle height minimization and quadratic wiggle height minimization efficiently. Finally, we introduce a new method for routing character curves that focuses on keeping distances between neighboring curves constant as long as they run in parallel. We have implemented our algorithms, and we conduct a case study that explores the differences between the three optimization objectives. We use existing benchmark data, but we also present a new use case for storylines, namely the visualization of rolling stock schedules in railway operation.

A Model for Strategic Ridepooling and Its Integration with Line Planning

Authors: Lena Dittrich, Michael Rihlmann, Sarah Roth, and Anita Schöbel

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 137, 25th Symposium on Algorithmic Approaches for Transportation Modelling, Optimization, and Systems (ATMOS 2025)

Abstract
Ridepooling becomes more and more popular and providing comfortable and easy-to-use transportation (nearly as taxi rides) is known to motivate passengers to use public transport. In this paper we develop a model for strategic planning of ridepooling. Here we decide in which regions ridepooling should be offered and what capacities are needed, neglecting the operational details of dial-a-ride planning. We use this model for integrating ridepooling and line planning, and analyze the integrated model theoretically and numerically. Our experiments show the potential of the approach.

Using A* for Optimal Train Routing on Moving Block Systems

Authors: Stefan Engels and Robert Wille

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 137, 25th Symposium on Algorithmic Approaches for Transportation Modelling, Optimization, and Systems (ATMOS 2025)

Abstract
Modern control systems based on Moving Block allow for shorter headways and higher capacity on existing railway infrastructure. At the same time, few algorithms for optimal routing on networks equipped with such modern control systems exist. Previous methods rely on Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) and face a trade-off between model size and accuracy, especially considering comparably complex and nonlinear headway constraints as well as train dynamics. With this work, we propose a complementary approach based on A*. Under a reasonable and easy assumption on train driver behavior, we propose a solution encoding and state space that is flexible concerning the choice of search algorithm and the modeling detail. The applicability is showcased on a small benchmark set. The implementation is available open-source as part of the Munich Train Control Toolkit (MTCT) on GitHub at https://github.com/cda-tum/mtct.

A Geometric Approach to Integrated Periodic Timetabling and Passenger Routing

Authors: Fabian Löbel and Niels Lindner

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 137, 25th Symposium on Algorithmic Approaches for Transportation Modelling, Optimization, and Systems (ATMOS 2025)

Abstract
We offer a geometric perspective on the problem of integrated periodic timetabling and passenger routing in public transport. Inside the space of periodic tensions, we single out those regions, where the same set of paths provides shortest passenger routes. This results in a polyhedral subdivision, which we combine with the known decomposition by polytropes. On each maximal region of the common refinement, the integrated problem is solvable in polynomial time. We transform these insights into a new geometry-driven primal heuristic, integrated tropical neighborhood search (ITNS). Computationally, we compare implementations of ITNS and the integrated (restricted) modulo network simplex algorithm on the TimPassLib benchmark set, and contribute better solutions in terms of total travel time for all but one of the twenty-five instances for which a proven optimal solution is not yet known.

Connected Partitions via Connected Dominating Sets

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 351, 33rd Annual European Symposium on Algorithms (ESA 2025)

Abstract
The classical theorem due to Győri and Lovász states that any k-connected graph G admits a partition into k connected subgraphs, where each subgraph has a prescribed size and contains a prescribed vertex, as long as the total size of target subgraphs is equal to the size of G. However, this result is notoriously evasive in terms of efficient constructions, and it is still unknown whether such a partition can be computed in polynomial time, even for k = 5. We make progress towards an efficient constructive version of the Győri-Lovász theorem by considering a natural strengthening of the k-connectivity requirement. Specifically, we show that the desired connected partition can be found in polynomial time, if G contains k disjoint connected dominating sets. As a consequence of this result, we give several efficient approximate and exact constructive versions of the original Győri-Lovász theorem: - On general graphs, a Győri-Lovász partition with k parts can be computed in polynomial time when the input graph has connectivity Ω(k ⋅ log² n); - On convex bipartite graphs, connectivity of 4k is sufficient; - On biconvex graphs and interval graphs, connectivity of k is sufficient, meaning that our algorithm gives a "true" constructive version of the theorem on these graph classes.

On the Approximability of Train Routing and the Min-Max Disjoint Paths Problem

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 351, 33rd Annual European Symposium on Algorithms (ESA 2025)

Abstract
In train routing, the headway is the minimum distance that must be maintained between successive trains for safety and robustness. We introduce a model for train routing that requires a fixed headway to be maintained between trains, and study the problem of minimizing the makespan, i.e., the arrival time of the last train, in a single-source single-sink network. For this problem, we first show that there exists an optimal solution where trains move in convoys - that is, the optimal paths for any two trains are either the same or are arc-disjoint. Via this insight, we are able to reduce the approximability of our train routing problem to that of the min-max disjoint paths problem, which asks for a collection of disjoint paths where the maximum length of any path in the collection is as small as possible. While min-max disjoint paths inherits a strong inapproximability result on directed acyclic graphs from the multi-level bottleneck assignment problem, we show that a natural greedy composition approach yields a logarithmic approximation in the number of disjoint paths for series-parallel graphs. We also present an alternative analysis of this approach that yields a guarantee depending on how often the decomposition tree of the series-parallel graph alternates between series and parallel compositions on any root-leaf path.

Solving the Electric Bus Scheduling Problem by an Integrated Flow and Set Partitioning Approach

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 123, 24th Symposium on Algorithmic Approaches for Transportation Modelling, Optimization, and Systems (ATMOS 2024)

Abstract
Attractive and cost-efficient public transport requires solving computationally difficult optimization problems from network design to crew rostering. While great progress has been made in many areas, new requirements to handle increasingly complex constraints are constantly coming up. One such challenge is a new type of resource constraints that are used to deal with the state-of-charge of battery-electric vehicles, which have limited driving ranges and need to be recharged in-service. Resource constrained vehicle scheduling problems can classically be modelled in terms of either a resource constrained (multi-commodity) flow problem or in terms of a path-based set partition problem. We demonstrate how a novel integrated version of both formulations can be leveraged to solve resource constrained vehicle scheduling with replenishment in general and the electric bus scheduling problem in particular by Lagrangian relaxation and the proximal bundle method.

A Bayesian Rolling Horizon Approach for Rolling Stock Rotation Planning with Predictive Maintenance

Authors: Felix Prause and Ralf Borndörfer

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 123, 24th Symposium on Algorithmic Approaches for Transportation Modelling, Optimization, and Systems (ATMOS 2024)

Abstract
We consider the rolling stock rotation planning problem with predictive maintenance (RSRP-PdM), where a timetable given by a set of trips must be operated by a fleet of vehicles. Here, the health states of the vehicles are assumed to be random variables, and their maintenance schedule should be planned based on their predicted failure probabilities. Utilizing the Bayesian update step of the Kalman filter, we develop a rolling horizon approach for RSRP-PdM, in which the predicted health state distributions are updated as new data become available. This approach reduces the uncertainty of the health states and thus improves the decision-making basis for maintenance planning. To solve the instances, we employ a local neighborhood search, which is a modification of a heuristic for RSRP-PdM, and demonstrate its effectiveness. Using this solution algorithm, the presented approach is compared with the results of common maintenance strategies on test instances derived from real-world timetables. The obtained results show the benefits of the rolling horizon approach.

Abstract
The algorithmic efficiency of Newton-based methods for Free Flight Trajectory Optimization is heavily influenced by the size of the domain of convergence. We provide numerical evidence that the convergence radius is much larger in practice than what the theoretical worst case bounds suggest. The algorithm can be further improved by a convergence-enhancing domain decomposition.

Assignment Based Resource Constrained Path Generation for Railway Rolling Stock Optimization

Authors: Boris Grimm, Ralf Borndörfer, and Julian Bushe

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 115, 23rd Symposium on Algorithmic Approaches for Transportation Modelling, Optimization, and Systems (ATMOS 2023)

Abstract
The fundamental task of every passenger railway operator is to offer an attractive railway timetable to the passengers while operating it as cost efficiently as possible. The available rolling stock has to be assigned to trips so that all trips are operated, operational requirements are satisfied, and the operating costs are minimum. This so-called Rolling Stock Rotation Problem (RSRP) is well studied in the literature. In this paper we consider an acyclic version of the RSRP that includes vehicle maintenance. As the latter is an important aspect, maintenance services have to be planned simultaneously to ensure the rotation’s feasibility in practice. Indeed, regular maintenance is important for the safety and reliability of the rolling stock as well as enforced by law in many countries. We present a new integer programming formulation that links a hyperflow to model vehicle compositions and their coupling decisions to a set of path variables that take care of the resource consumption of the individual vehicles. To solve the model we developed different column generation algorithms which are compared to each other as well as to the MILP flow formulation of [Ralf Borndörfer et al., 2016] on a test set of real world instances.

Abstract
The ongoing electrification of logistics systems and vehicle fleets increases the complexity of associated vehicle routing or scheduling problems. Battery-powered vehicles have to be scheduled to recharge in-service, and the relationship between charging time and replenished driving range is non-linear. In order to access the powerful toolkit offered by mixed-integer and linear programming techniques, this battery behavior has to be linearized. Moreover, as electric fleets grow, power draw peaks have to be avoided to save on electricity costs or to adhere to hard grid capacity limits, such that it becomes desirable to keep recharge rates dynamic. We suggest a novel linearization approach of battery charging behavior for vehicle scheduling problems, in which the recharge rates are optimization variables and not model parameters.

An A* Algorithm for Flight Planning Based on Idealized Vertical Profiles

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 106, 22nd Symposium on Algorithmic Approaches for Transportation Modelling, Optimization, and Systems (ATMOS 2022)

Abstract
The Flight Planning Problem is to find a minimum fuel trajectory between two airports in a 3D airway network under consideration of the wind. We show that this problem is NP-hard, even in its most basic version. We then present a novel A* heuristic, whose potential function is derived from an idealized vertical profile over the remaining flight distance. This potential is, under rather general assumptions, both admissible and consistent and it can be computed efficiently. The method outperforms the state-of-the-art heuristic on real-life instances.

A Discrete-Continuous Algorithm for Globally Optimal Free Flight Trajectory Optimization

Authors: Ralf Borndörfer, Fabian Danecker, and Martin Weiser

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 106, 22nd Symposium on Algorithmic Approaches for Transportation Modelling, Optimization, and Systems (ATMOS 2022)

Abstract
We present an efficient algorithm that finds a globally optimal solution to the 2D Free Flight Trajectory Optimization Problem (aka Zermelo Navigation Problem) up to arbitrary precision in finite time. The algorithm combines a discrete and a continuous optimization phase. In the discrete phase, a set of candidate paths that densely covers the trajectory space is created on a directed auxiliary graph. Then Yen’s algorithm provides a promising set of discrete candidate paths which subsequently undergo a locally convergent refinement stage. Provided that the auxiliary graph is sufficiently dense, the method finds a path that lies within the convex domain around the global minimizer. From this starting point, the second stage will converge rapidly to the optimum. The density of the auxiliary graph depends solely on the wind field, and not on the accuracy of the solution, such that the method inherits the superior asymptotic convergence properties of the optimal control stage.

Efficient Algorithms for the Multi-Period Line Planning Problem in Public Transportation (Short Paper)

Authors: Güvenç Şahin, Amin Ahmadi Digehsara, and Ralf Borndörfer

Published in: OASIcs, Volume 96, 21st Symposium on Algorithmic Approaches for Transportation Modelling, Optimization, and Systems (ATMOS 2021)

Abstract
In order to plan and schedule a demand-responsive public transportation system, both temporal and spatial changes in demand should be taken into account even at the line planning stage. We study the multi-period line planning problem with integrated decisions regarding dynamic allocation of vehicles among the lines. Given the NP-hard nature of the line planning problem, the multi-period version is clearly difficult to solve for large public transit networks even with advanced solvers. It becomes necessary to develop algorithms that are capable of solving even the very-large instances in reasonable time. For instances which belong to real public transit networks, we present results of a heuristic local branching algorithm and an exact approach based on constraint propagation.
