The Impossibility of Simultaneous Time and I/O Optimality for the Planar Maxima and Convex Hull Problems

Abstract
We prove that no deterministic output-sensitive algorithm for the planar convex hull and maxima problems can obtain both optimal time and I/O complexity, where the optimality is defined with respect to both the input and output sizes. This explains why the best previous algorithms achieved an optimal I/O bound at the cost of sub-optimal running time (Goodrich et al. [FOCS, 1993]). To the best of our knowledge, the impossibility of simultaneous optimality was only shown previously for the permutation problem by Brodal and Fagerberg [STOC, 2003]. Our results imply that no optimal deterministic output-sensitive cache-oblivious algorithm exists for either problem. In addition, we present simple deterministic algorithms that match our lower bounds and that provide a trade-off between time and I/Os. On the other hand, a simple modification of our deterministic algorithm results in a randomized algorithm that simultaneously achieves optimal (worst-case) time and optimal expected I/O bounds.

Engineering Fully Dynamic Convex Hulls

Authors: Ivor van der Hoog, Henrik Reinstädtler, and Eva Rotenberg

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 371, 24th International Symposium on Experimental Algorithms (SEA 2026)

Abstract
We present a new fully dynamic algorithm for maintaining convex hulls under insertions and deletions while supporting geometric queries. Our approach combines the logarithmic method with a deletion-only convex hull data structure, achieving amortised update times of O(log n log log n) and query times of O(log² n). We provide a robust and non-trivial implementation that supports point-location queries, a challenging and non-decomposable class of convex hull queries. We evaluate our implementation against the state of the art, including a new naive baseline that rebuilds the convex hull whenever an update affects it. On hulls that include polynomially many data points (e.g. Θ(n^ε) for some ε), such as the ones that often occur in practice, our method outperforms all other techniques. Update-heavy workloads strongly favour our approach, which is in line with our theoretical guarantees. Yet, our method remains competitive all the way down to when the update to query ratio is 1 to 10. Experiments on real-world data sets furthermore reveal that existing fully dynamic techniques suffer from significant robustness issues. In contrast, our implementation remains stable across all tested inputs.

Bichromatic Classifications of Points Using Strips

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 370, 20th Scandinavian Symposium on Algorithm Theory (SWAT 2026)

Abstract
Given a set of n points in the plane, each colored either blue or red, we study the problem of finding a strip that separates the blue points from the red points. Specifically, we consider the following two variants: (1) locating a strip that contains no red points while maximizing the number of blue points within the strip, and (2) locating a strip that contains all blue points while minimizing the number of red points within the strip. For variant (1), we present an O(n²)-time algorithm, improving upon the previously best O(n²log n)-time result. We also show that this running time is optimal under the standard 3SUM conjecture. We also give an output-sensitive algorithm with running time O(k_{opt} n log n) that returns a strip, where k_{opt} is the number of blue points not contained within the strip in an optimal solution. We extend our results to the case of up to t parallel strips, obtaining an O(n²log n)-time algorithm. For variant (2), an optimal Θ(nlog n)-time algorithm is known for t = 1. We show 3SUM-hardness for t = 2 and give an O(n²)-time algorithm. For any t ≥ 3, we present an O(n²log n)-time algorithm.

Indexing and Encoding Arrays for Element Distinctness Queries

Authors: Johannes Fischer and Filippo Lari

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 369, 37th Annual Symposium on Combinatorial Pattern Matching (CPM 2026)

Abstract
We introduce the data structure variant of the well-known element distinctness problem. Given an array of n elements, the goal is to preprocess the array into a data structure that supports queries asking whether all elements within a given query range are distinct. This has applications in text indexing and possibly also in other algorithmic domains. In the indexing model (where access to the input array is allowed), we design a data structure using O((n log b)/b) bits and answering queries in the time needed to solve an online element distinctness instance of size O(b), for any b ≥ 1. As a concrete instantiation of this, there exists an index that answers queries in O(log log log n) time using O({n log²(log log log n)}/{log log log n}) bits of additional space. Moving to the encoding model (where access to the input array is not allowed), we begin by proving an information-theoretic lower bound for the space usage of 2n-O(log n) bits, and then design a matching encoding with O(1) time queries. We then consider the case in which the alphabet size σ is constant. In this setting, the lower bound can be refined to n log(r_σ) - 3 log(σ+2) + O(1) bits, where r_σ = 4cos²(π/(σ+2)). This lower bound is matched by an encoding with O(1) time queries.

New Results on Three-Sided Skyline Range Counting and Reporting

Authors: Suruchi Kushwaha and Yakov Nekrich

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 370, 20th Scandinavian Symposium on Algorithm Theory (SWAT 2026)

Abstract
In the orthogonal skyline range counting (resp. reporting) problem we store the set of points P in a data structure so that for any query range Q the number of points (resp. the list of all points) on the skyline of Q∩ P can be found efficiently. In this paper we study two-dimensional range counting and reporting problems in the case when the query range is bounded on three sides. We describe a linear-space data structure that answers top-open three-sided skyline counting queries in O(log log N) time, where N is the number of points stored in the data structure. We also show that bottom-open three-sided skyline counting queries are as difficult as general four-sided queries and any data structure that uses O(Nlog^c N) space for a constant c requires Ω(log N/log log N) time to answer such queries. Next, we turn to skyline color range queries. In this variant of the problem each point in P is assigned a color and we must count (resp. report) the distinct colors of point on the skyline of Q∩ P. We describe an O(N)-space data structure that answers top-open three-sided color counting queries in O(log N/log log N) time. Finally, we study top-open three-sided skyline color reporting in the EM model and describe a data structure that uses linear space and answers queries in O(k/B+1) I/Os where k is the number of colors on the skyline. This is the first external-memory data structure with optimal query cost and space usage for this problem.

Dynamic Light Spanners in Doubling Metrics

Authors: Sujoy Bhore, Jonathan Conroy, and Arnold Filtser

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 367, 42nd International Symposium on Computational Geometry (SoCG 2026)

Abstract
A t-spanner of a point set X in a metric space (𝒳, δ) is a graph G with vertex set P such that, for any pair of points u,v ∈ X, the distance between u and v in G is at most t times δ(u,v). We study the problem of maintaining a spanner for a dynamic point set X - that is, when X undergoes a sequence of insertions and deletions - in a metric space of constant doubling dimension. For any constant ε > 0, we maintain a (1+ε)-spanner of P whose total weight remains within a constant factor of the weight of the minimum spanning tree of X. Each update (insertion or deletion) can be performed in poly(log Φ) time, where Φ denotes the aspect ratio of X. Prior to our work, no efficient dynamic algorithm for maintaining a light-weight spanner was known even for point sets in low-dimensional Euclidean space.

FPT Approximations for Capacitated Sum of Radii and Diameters

Authors: Arnold Filtser and Ameet Gadekar

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 367, 42nd International Symposium on Computational Geometry (SoCG 2026)

Abstract
The Capacitated Sum of Radii problem involves partitioning a set of points P, where each point p ∈ P has capacity U_p, into k clusters that minimize the sum of cluster radii, such that the number of points in the cluster centered at point p is at most U_p. We begin by showing that the problem is APX-hard, and that under gap-ETH there is no parameterized approximation scheme (FPT-AS). We then construct a ≈5.83-approximation algorithm in FPT time (improving a previous ≈7.61 approximation in FPT time). Our results also hold when the objective is a general monotone symmetric norm of radii. We also improve the approximation factors for the uniform capacity case, and for the closely related problem of Capacitated Sum of Diameters.

Weak Binary Search Trees

Authors: Tobias Lauer

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 366, 13th International Conference on Fun with Algorithms (FUN 2026)

Abstract
Binary Search Trees (BST) have probably been studied more extensively than any other data structure in computer science. Their central property is the in-order invariant, which enables search for a key in time proportional to the height of the tree. Quite interestingly, the need for this strict invariant for efficient search seems to have always been taken for granted. In this paper, we introduce Weak Binary Search Trees (WST) and show that the in-order invariant can be relaxed substantially without sacrificing the O(log n) runtime bounds for search known from BST. We provide a simple and efficient search algorithm and list methods for insertion and deletion of keys in time proportional to the height of the tree. For balancing WST, rotations are less efficient than in BST. We adapt a rotation-free balancing scheme to WST, which can keep update operations in O(log n) overall time in the amortized average case.

Dynamic Pattern Matching with Wildcards

Abstract
We study the fully dynamic pattern matching problem where the pattern may contain up to k wildcard symbols, each matching any symbol of the alphabet. Both the text and the pattern are subject to updates (insert, delete, change). We design an algorithm with 𝒪(n log² n) preprocessing and update/query time 𝒪̃(kn^{k/{k+1}} + k² log n). The bound is truly sublinear for a constant k, and sublinear when k = o(log n). We further complement our results with a conditional lower bound: assuming subquadratic preprocessing time, achieving truly sublinear update time for the case k = Ω(log n) would contradict the Strong Exponential Time Hypothesis (SETH). Finally, we develop sublinear algorithms for two special cases: - If the pattern contains w non-wildcard symbols, we give an algorithm with preprocessing time 𝒪(nw) and update time 𝒪(w + log n), which is truly sublinear whenever w is truly sublinear. - Using FFT technique combined with block decomposition, we design a deterministic truly sublinear algorithm with preprocessing time 𝒪(n^{1.8}) and update time 𝒪(n^{0.8} log n) for the case that there are at most two non-wildcards.

Range Longest Increasing Subsequence and Its Relatives

Authors: Karthik C. S. and Saladi Rahul

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 362, 17th Innovations in Theoretical Computer Science Conference (ITCS 2026)

Abstract
Longest increasing subsequence (LIS) is a classical textbook problem which is still actively studied in various computational models. In this work, we present a few results for the range longest increasing subsequence problem (Range-LIS) and its variants. The input to Range-LIS is a sequence 𝒮 of n real numbers and a collection 𝒬 of m query ranges and for each query in 𝒬, the goal is to report the LIS of the sequence 𝒮 restricted to that query. Our two main results are for the following generalizations of the Range-LIS problem: 2D Range Queries: In this variant of the Range-LIS problem, each query is a pair of ranges, one of indices and the other of values, and we provide a randomized algorithm with running time Õ(mn^{1/2}+ n^{3/2})+O(k), where k is the cumulative length of the m output subsequences. This improves on the elementary Õ(mn) runtime algorithm when m = Ω(√n). Previously, the only known result breaking the quadratic barrier was of Tiskin [SODA'10] which could only handle 1D range queries (i.e., each query was a range of indices) and also just outputted the length of the LIS (instead of reporting the subsequence achieving that length). Subsequent to our paper, Gawrychowski, Gorbachev, and Kociumaka in a preprint have extended Tiskin’s approach to handle reporting 1D range queries in O(n(log n)³+m+k) time. Colored Sequences: In this variant of the Range-LIS problem, each element in 𝒮 is colored and for each query in 𝒬, the goal is to report a monochromatic LIS contained in the sequence 𝒮 restricted to that query. For 2D queries, we provide a randomized algorithm for this colored version with running time Õ(mn^{2/3}+ n^{5/3})+O(k). Moreover, for 1D queries, we provide an improved algorithm with running time Õ(mn^{1/2}+ n^{3/2})+O(k). Thus, we again improve on the elementary Õ(mn) runtime algorithm. Additionally, we prove that assuming the well-known Combinatorial Boolean Matrix Multiplication Hypothesis, that the runtime for 1D queries is essentially tight for combinatorial algorithms. Our algorithms combine several tools such as dynamic programming (to precompute increasing subsequences with some desirable properties), geometric data structures (to efficiently compute the dynamic programming entries), random sampling (to capture elements which are part of the LIS), classification of query ranges into large LIS and small LIS, and classification of colors into light and heavy. We believe that our techniques will be of interest to tackle other variants of LIS problem and other range-searching problems.

Abstract
The classical theorem due to Győri and Lovász states that any k-connected graph G admits a partition into k connected subgraphs, where each subgraph has a prescribed size and contains a prescribed vertex, as long as the total size of target subgraphs is equal to the size of G. However, this result is notoriously evasive in terms of efficient constructions, and it is still unknown whether such a partition can be computed in polynomial time, even for k = 5. We make progress towards an efficient constructive version of the Győri-Lovász theorem by considering a natural strengthening of the k-connectivity requirement. Specifically, we show that the desired connected partition can be found in polynomial time, if G contains k disjoint connected dominating sets. As a consequence of this result, we give several efficient approximate and exact constructive versions of the original Győri-Lovász theorem: - On general graphs, a Győri-Lovász partition with k parts can be computed in polynomial time when the input graph has connectivity Ω(k ⋅ log² n); - On convex bipartite graphs, connectivity of 4k is sufficient; - On biconvex graphs and interval graphs, connectivity of k is sufficient, meaning that our algorithm gives a "true" constructive version of the theorem on these graph classes.

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 351, 33rd Annual European Symposium on Algorithms (ESA 2025)

Abstract
We present an external-memory priority queue structure supporting Insert and DeleteMin with amortized 𝒪(1) and 𝒪(lg N) comparisons, respectively, and amortized 𝒪(1/B) and 𝒪(1/B log_{M/B} N/B) I/Os, respectively. Here, M is the size of the internal memory, B is the block size of I/Os between internal and external memory, and N is the number of elements in the priority queue just before an operation is performed. Previous external-memory priority queues required amortized 𝒪(lg N) comparisons and 𝒪(1/B log_{M/B} N/B) I/Os for both Insert and DeleteMin. The construction requires the minimal assumption M ≥ 2B.

Bounded Weighted Edit Distance: Dynamic Algorithms and Matching Lower Bounds

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 351, 33rd Annual European Symposium on Algorithms (ESA 2025)

Abstract
The edit distance ed(X,Y) of two strings X,Y ∈ Σ^* is the minimum number of character edits (insertions, deletions, and substitutions) needed to transform X into Y. Its weighted counterpart ed^w(X,Y) minimizes the total cost of edits, where the costs of individual edits, depending on the edit type and the characters involved, are specified using a function w, normalized so that each edit costs at least one. The textbook dynamic-programming procedure, given strings X,Y ∈ Σ^{≤ n} and oracle access to w, computes ed^w(X,Y) in 𝒪(n²) time. Nevertheless, one can achieve better running times if the computed distance, denoted k, is small: 𝒪(n+k²) for unit weights [Landau and Vishkin; JCSS'88] and Õ(n+√{nk³}) for arbitrary weights [Cassis, Kociumaka, Wellnitz; FOCS'23]. In this paper, we study the dynamic version of the weighted edit distance problem, where the goal is to maintain ed^w(X,Y) for strings X,Y ∈ Σ^{≤ n} that change over time, with each update specified as an edit in X or Y. Very recently, Gorbachev and Kociumaka [STOC'25] showed that the unweighted distance ed(X,Y) can be maintained in Õ(k) time per update after Õ(n+k²)-time preprocessing; here, k denotes the current value of ed(X,Y). Their algorithm generalizes to small integer weights, but the underlying approach is incompatible with large weights. Our main result is a dynamic algorithm that maintains ed^w(X,Y) in Õ(k^{3-γ}) time per update after Õ(nk^γ)-time preprocessing. Here, γ ∈ [0,1] is a real trade-off parameter and k ≥ 1 is an integer threshold fixed at preprocessing time, with ∞ returned whenever ed^w(X,Y) > k. We complement our algorithm with conditional lower bounds showing fine-grained optimality of our trade-off for γ ∈ [0.5,1) and justifying our choice to fix k. We also generalize our solution to a much more robust setting while preserving the fine-grained optimal trade-off. Our full algorithm maintains X ∈ Σ^{≤ n} subject not only to character edits but also substring deletions and copy-pastes, each supported in Õ(k²) time. Instead of dynamically maintaining Y, it answers queries that, given any string Y specified through a sequence of 𝒪(k) arbitrary edits transforming X into Y, in Õ(k^{3-γ}) time compute ed^w(X,Y) or report that ed^w(X,Y) > k.

Near-Optimal Differentially Private Graph Algorithms via the Multidimensional AboveThreshold Mechanism

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 351, 33rd Annual European Symposium on Algorithms (ESA 2025)

Abstract
Many differentially private and classical non-private graph algorithms rely crucially on determining whether some property of each vertex meets a threshold. For example, for the k-core decomposition problem, the classic peeling algorithm iteratively removes a vertex if its induced degree falls below a threshold. The sparse vector technique (SVT) is generally used to transform non-private threshold queries into private ones with only a small additive loss in accuracy. However, a naive application of SVT in the graph setting leads to an amplification of the error by a factor of n due to composition, as SVT is applied to every vertex. In this paper, we resolve this problem by formulating a novel generalized sparse vector technique which we call the Multidimensional AboveThreshold (MAT) Mechanism which generalizes SVT (applied to vectors with one dimension) to vectors with multiple dimensions. When applied to vectors with n dimensions, we solve a number of important graph problems with better bounds than previous work. Specifically, we apply our MAT mechanism to obtain a set of improved bounds for a variety of problems including k-core decomposition, densest subgraph, low out-degree ordering, and vertex coloring. We give a tight local edge differentially private (LEDP) algorithm for k-core decomposition that results in an approximation with O(ε^{-1} log n) additive error and no multiplicative error in O(n) rounds. We also give a new (2+η)-factor multiplicative, O(ε^{-1} log n) additive error algorithm in O(log² n) rounds for any constant η > 0. Both of these results are asymptotically tight against our new lower bound of Ω(log n) for any constant-factor approximation algorithm for k-core decomposition. Our new algorithms for k-core decomposition also directly lead to new algorithms for the related problems of densest subgraph and low out-degree ordering. Finally, we give novel LEDP differentially private defective coloring algorithms that use number of colors given in terms of the arboricity of the graph.

Buffered Partially-Persistent External-Memory Search Trees

Authors: Gerth Stølting Brodal, Casper Moldrup Rysgaard, and Rolf Svenning

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 351, 33rd Annual European Symposium on Algorithms (ESA 2025)

Abstract
We present an optimal partially-persistent external-memory search tree with amortized I/O bounds matching those achieved by the non-persistent B^{ε}-tree by Brodal and Fagerberg [SODA 2003]. In a partially-persistent data structure, each update creates a new version. All past versions can be queried, but only the current version can be updated. Operations should be efficient with respect to the size N_v of the accessed version v. For any parameter 0 < ε < 1, our data structure supports insertions and deletions in amortized 𝒪(1/(ε B^{1 - ε}) log_B N_v) I/Os, where B is the external-memory block size. It also supports successor and range reporting queries in amortized 𝒪(1/ε log_B N_v + K/B) I/Os, where K is the number of keys reported. The space usage of the data structure is linear in the total number of updates. We make the standard and minimal assumption that the internal memory has size M ≥ 2B. The previous state-of-the-art external-memory partially-persistent search tree by Arge, Danner and Teh [JEA 2003] supports all operations in worst-case 𝒪(log_B N_v + K/B) I/Os, matching the bounds achieved by the classical B-tree by Bayer and McCreight [Acta Informatica 1972]. Our data structure successfully combines buffering updates with partial persistence. The I/O bounds can also be achieved in the worst-case sense, by slightly modifying our data structure and under the requirement that the memory size M = Ω(B^{1-ε} log₂(max_v N_v)). For updates, where the I/O bound is o(1), we assume that the I/Os are performed evenly spread out among the updates (by performing buffer-overflows incrementally). The worst-case result slightly improves the memory requirement over the previous ephemeral external-memory dictionary by Das, Iacono, and Nekrich (ISAAC 2022), who achieved matching worst-case I/O bounds but required M = Ω(B log_B N), where N is the size of the current dictionary.
