Computing Twin-Width via Treedepth and Vertex Integrity

Abstract
Twin-width is a graph parameter that has become central to explaining the fixed-parameter tractability of first-order model checking across many graph classes. Despite its algorithmic importance, computing twin-width remains poorly understood: even recognizing graphs of twin-width at most four is NP-hard, and no fixed-parameter approximations parameterized by twin-width itself are known. A recent approach towards breaking this barrier focuses on first developing fixed-parameter algorithms for computing or approximating twin-width under parameterizations distinct from twin-width. Our first result establishes that approximating twin-width is fixed-parameter tractable when parameterized by treedepth, thereby breaking the long-standing barrier that all previous tractable parameterizations were based on deletion distance. The proof proceeds via oriented twin-width, yielding the first constructive evidence that this variant may be easier to handle algorithmically. As our second main result, we show that computing twin-width exactly is fixed-parameter tractable with respect to vertex integrity. This constitutes the first non-trivial parameterized algorithm for computing optimal contraction sequences.

Hitting Geodesic Intervals in Structurally Restricted Graphs

Abstract
Given a graph G = (V,E), a set T of vertex pairs, and an integer k, Hitting Geodesic Intervals asks whether there is a set S ⊆ V of size at most k such that for each terminal pair {u,v} ∈ T, the set S intersects at least one shortest u-v path. Aravind and Saxena [WALCOM 2024] introduced this problem and showed several parameterized complexity results. In this paper, we extend the known results in both negative and positive directions and present sharp complexity contrasts with respect to structural graph parameters. We first show that the problem is NP-complete even on graphs with highly restricted shortest-path structures. More precisely, we show the NP-completeness on graphs obtained by adding a single vertex to a disjoint union of 5-vertex paths. By modifying the proof of this result, we also show the NP-completeness on graphs obtained from a path by adding one vertex and on graphs obtained from a disjoint union of triangles by adding one universal vertex. Furthermore, we show the NP-completeness on graphs of bandwidth 4 and maximum degree 5 by replacing the universal vertex in the last case with a long path. Under standard complexity assumptions, these negative results rule out fixed-parameter algorithms for most of the structural parameters studied in the literature (if the solution size k is not part of the parameter). We next present fixed-parameter algorithms parameterized by k plus modular-width and by k plus vertex integrity. The algorithm for the latter case does indeed solve a more general setting that includes the parameterization by the minimum vertex multiway-cut size of the terminal vertices. We show that this is tight in the sense that the problem parameterized by the minimum vertex multicut size of the terminal pairs is W[2]-complete. We then modify the proof of this intractability result and show that the problem is W[2]-complete parameterized by k even in the setting where T = binom(Q,2) for some Q ⊆ V.

Quadratic Kernel for Cliques or Trees Vertex Deletion

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 359, 36th International Symposium on Algorithms and Computation (ISAAC 2025)

Abstract
We consider Cliques or Trees Vertex Deletion, which is a hybrid of two fundamental parameterized problems: Cluster Vertex Deletion and Feedback Vertex Set. In this problem, we are given an undirected graph G and an integer k, and asked to find a vertex subset X of size at most k such that each connected component of G-X is either a clique or a tree. Jacob et al. (ISAAC, 2024) provided a kernel of O(k⁵) vertices for this problem, which was recently improved to O(k⁴) by Tsur (IPL, 2025). Our main result is a kernel of O(k²) vertices. This result closes the gap between the kernelization result for Feedback Vertex Set, which corresponds to the case where each connected component of G-X must be a tree. Although both cluster vertex deletion number and feedback vertex set number are well-studied structural parameters, little attention has been given to parameters that generalize both of them. In fact, the lowest common well-known generalization of them is clique-width, which is a highly general parameter. To fill the gap here, we initiate the study of the cliques or trees vertex deletion number as a structural parameter. We prove that Longest Cycle, which is a fundamental problem that does not admit o(n^k)-time algorithm unless ETH fails when k is the clique-width, becomes fixed-parameter tractable when parameterized by the cliques or trees vertex deletion number.

Structural Parameterizations of Simultaneous Planarity

Abstract
Given a set of graphs on the same vertex set, the problem Simultaneous Embedding With Fixed Edges (SEFE) asks, whether there exist planar drawings of all input graphs, such that every pair of drawings coincides on their shared subgraph. It is known that SEFE is NP-complete [Elisabeth Gassner et al., 2006], even in the so-called sunflower case, where all pairs of input graphs have the same shared graph G_∩ [Marcus Schaefer, 2012]. Fink, Pfretzschner, and Rutter [Simon D. Fink et al., 2023] recently initiated the study of the parameterized complexity of SEFE in the sunflower case, mainly focusing on structural parameters of G_∩. In this work, we shift the focus towards parameters of the union graph G_∪ that contains the edges of all input graphs. On the positive side, we establish fixed-parameter tractability for the problem with respect to the feedback edge set number of G_∪. We complement this result by showing that it, surprisingly, remains NP-complete even if G_∪ has constant vertex cover number. These results settle two open questions posed by Fink et al. [Simon D. Fink et al., 2023].

Structural Parameterizations of k-Planarity

Authors: Tatsuya Gima, Yasuaki Kobayashi, and Yuto Okada

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 357, 33rd International Symposium on Graph Drawing and Network Visualization (GD 2025)

Abstract
The concept of k-planarity is extensively studied in the context of Beyond Planarity. A graph is k-planar if it admits a drawing in the plane in which each edge is crossed at most k times. The local crossing number of a graph is the minimum integer k such that it is k-planar. The problem of determining whether an input graph is 1-planar is known to be NP-complete even for near-planar graphs [Cabello and Mohar, SIAM J. Comput. 2013], that is, the graphs obtained from planar graphs by adding a single edge. Moreover, the local crossing number is hard to approximate within a factor 2 - ε for any ε > 0 [Urschel and Wellens, IPL 2021]. To address this computational intractability, Bannister, Cabello, and Eppstein [JGAA 2018] investigated the parameterized complexity of the case of k = 1, particularly focusing on structural parameterizations on input graphs, such as treedepth, vertex cover number, and feedback edge number. In this paper, we extend their approach by considering the general case k ≥ 1 and give (tight) parameterized upper and lower bound results. In particular, we strengthen the aforementioned lower bound results to subclasses of constant-treewidth graphs: we show that testing 1-planarity is NP-complete even for near-planar graphs with feedback vertex set number at most 3 and pathwidth at most 4, and the local crossing number is hard to approximate within any constant factor for graphs with feedback vertex set number at most 2.

Courcelle’s Theorem for Lipschitz Continuity

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 351, 33rd Annual European Symposium on Algorithms (ESA 2025)

Abstract
Lipschitz continuity of algorithms, introduced by Kumabe and Yoshida (FOCS'23), measures the stability of an algorithm against small input perturbations. Algorithms with small Lipschitz continuity are desirable, as they ensure reliable decision-making and reproducible scientific research. Several studies have proposed Lipschitz continuous algorithms for various combinatorial optimization problems, but these algorithms are problem-specific, requiring a separate design for each problem. To address this issue, we provide the first algorithmic meta-theorem in the field of Lipschitz continuous algorithms. Our result can be seen as a Lipschitz continuous analogue of Courcelle’s theorem, which offers Lipschitz continuous algorithms for problems on bounded-treewidth graphs. Specifically, we consider the problem of finding a vertex set in a graph that maximizes or minimizes the total weight, subject to constraints expressed in monadic second-order logic (MSO₂). We show that for any ε > 0, there exists a (1±ε)-approximation algorithm for the problem with a polylogarithmic Lipschitz constant on bounded treewidth graphs. On such graphs, our result outperforms most existing Lipschitz continuous algorithms in terms of approximability and/or Lipschitz continuity. Further, we provide similar results for problems on bounded-clique-width graphs subject to constraints expressed in MSO₁. Additionally, we construct a Lipschitz continuous version of Baker’s decomposition using our meta-theorem as a subroutine.

Max-Distance Sparsification for Diversification and Clustering

Authors: Soh Kumabe

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 351, 33rd Annual European Symposium on Algorithms (ESA 2025)

Abstract
Let 𝒟 be a set family that is the solution domain of some combinatorial problem. The max-min diversification problem on 𝒟 is the problem to select k sets from 𝒟 such that the Hamming distance between any two selected sets is at least d. FPT algorithms parameterized by k+𝓁, where 𝓁 = max_{D ∈ 𝒟}|D|, and k+d have been actively studied recently for several specific domains. This paper provides unified algorithmic frameworks to solve this problem. Specifically, for each parameterization k+𝓁 and k+d, we provide an FPT oracle algorithm for the max-min diversification problem using oracles related to 𝒟. We then demonstrate that our frameworks provide the first FPT algorithms on several new domains 𝒟, including the domain of t-linear matroid intersection, almost 2-SAT, minimum edge s,t-flows, vertex sets of s,t-mincut, vertex sets of edge bipartization, and Steiner trees. We also demonstrate that our frameworks generalize most of the existing domain-specific tractability results. Our main technical breakthrough is introducing the notion of max-distance sparsifier of 𝒟, a domain on which the max-min diversification problem is equivalent to the same problem on the original domain 𝒟. The core of our framework is to design FPT oracle algorithms that construct a constant-size max-distance sparsifier of 𝒟. Using max-distance sparsifiers, we provide FPT algorithms for the max-min and max-sum diversification problems on 𝒟, as well as k-center and k-sum-of-radii clustering problems on 𝒟, which are also natural problems in the context of diversification and have their own interests.

Linear Layouts Revisited: Stacks, Queues, and Exact Algorithms

Authors: Thomas Depian, Simon D. Fink, Robert Ganian, and Vaishali Surianarayanan

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 351, 33rd Annual European Symposium on Algorithms (ESA 2025)

Abstract
In spite of the extensive study of stack and queue layouts, many fundamental questions remain open concerning the complexity-theoretic frontiers for computing stack and queue layouts. A stack (resp. queue) layout places vertices along a line and assigns edges to pages so that no two edges on the same page are crossing (resp. nested). We provide three new algorithms which together substantially expand our understanding of these problems: 1) A fixed-parameter algorithm for computing minimum-page stack and queue layouts w.r.t. the vertex integrity of an n-vertex graph G. This result is motivated by an open question in the literature and generalizes the previous algorithms parameterizing by the vertex cover number of G. The proof relies on a newly developed Ramsey pruning technique. Vertex integrity intuitively measures the vertex deletion distance to a subgraph with only small connected components. 2) An n^𝒪(q 𝓁) algorithm for computing 𝓁-page stack and queue layouts of page width at most q. This is the first algorithm avoiding a double-exponential dependency on the parameters. The page width of a layout measures the maximum number of edges one needs to cross on any page to reach the outer face. 3) A 2^𝒪(n) algorithm for computing 1-page queue layouts. This improves upon the previously fastest n^𝒪(n) algorithm and can be seen as a counterpart to the recent subexponential algorithm for computing 2-page stack layouts [ICALP'24], but relies on an entirely different technique.

Monotone Bounded-Depth Complexity of Homomorphism Polynomials

Authors: C.S. Bhargav, Shiteng Chen, Radu Curticapean, and Prateek Dwivedi

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 345, 50th International Symposium on Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science (MFCS 2025)

Abstract
For every fixed graph H, it is known that homomorphism counts from H and colorful H-subgraph counts can be determined in O(n^{t+1}) time on n-vertex input graphs G, where t is the treewidth of H. On the other hand, a running time of n^{o(t / log t)} would refute the exponential-time hypothesis. Komarath, Pandey, and Rahul (Algorithmica, 2023) studied algebraic variants of these counting problems, i.e., homomorphism and subgraph polynomials for fixed graphs H. These polynomials are weighted sums over the objects counted above, where each object is weighted by the product of variables corresponding to edges contained in the object. As shown by Komarath et al., the monotone circuit complexity of the homomorphism polynomial for H is Θ(n^{tw(H)+1}). In this paper, we characterize the power of monotone bounded-depth circuits for homomorphism and colorful subgraph polynomials. This leads us to discover a natural hierarchy of graph parameters tw_Δ(H), for fixed Δ ∈ ℕ, which capture the width of tree-decompositions for H when the underlying tree is required to have depth at most Δ. We prove that monotone circuits of product-depth Δ computing the homomorphism polynomial for H require size Θ(n^{tw_Δ(H^{†})+1}), where H^{†} is the graph obtained from H by removing all degree-1 vertices. This allows us to derive an optimal depth hierarchy theorem for monotone bounded-depth circuits through graph-theoretic arguments.

Abstract
In the Telephone Broadcast problem we are given a graph G = (V,E) with a designated source vertex s ∈ V. Our goal is to transmit a message, which is initially known only to s, to all vertices of the graph by using a process where in each round an informed vertex may transmit the message to one of its uninformed neighbors. The optimization objective is to minimize the number of rounds. Following up on several recent works, we investigate the structurally parameterized complexity of Telephone Broadcast. In particular, we first strengthen existing NP-hardness results by showing that the problem remains NP-complete on graphs of bounded tree-depth and also on cactus graphs which are one vertex deletion away from being path forests. Motivated by this (severe) hardness, we study several other parameterizations of the problem and obtain FPT algorithms parameterized by vertex integrity (generalizing a recent FPT algorithm parameterized by vertex cover by Fomin, Fraigniaud, and Golovach [TCS 2024]) and by distance to clique, as well as FPT approximation algorithms parameterized by clique-cover and cluster vertex deletion. Furthermore, we obtain structural results that relate the length of the optimal broadcast protocol of a graph G with its pathwidth and tree-depth. By presenting a substantial improvement over the best previously known bound for pathwidth (Aminian, Kamali, Seyed-Javadi, and Sumedha [ICALP 2025]) we exponentially improve the approximation ratio achievable in polynomial time on graphs of bounded pathwidth from 𝒪(4^pw) to 𝒪(pw).

Token Sliding Reconfiguration on DAGs

Abstract
Given a graph G and two independent sets of same size, the Independent Set Reconfiguration Problem under token sliding asks whether one can, in a step by step manner, transform the first independent set into the second one. In each step we must preserve the condition of independence. Further, referring to solution vertices as tokens, we are only permitted to slide a token along an edge. Until the recent work of Ito et al. [Ito et al. MFCS 2022] this problem was only considered on undirected graphs. In this work, we study reconfiguration under token sliding focusing on DAGs. We present a complete dichotomy of intractability in regard to the depth of the DAG, by proving that this problem is NP-complete for DAGs of depth 3 and W[1]-hard for depth 4 when parameterized by the number of tokens k, and that these bounds are tight. Further, we prove that it is fixed parameter tractable on DAGs parameterized by the combination of treewidth and k. We show that this result applies to undirected graphs, when the number of times a token can visit a vertex is restricted.

Temporal Dominating Set and Temporal Vertex Cover Under the Lense of Degree Restrictions

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 330, 4th Symposium on Algorithmic Foundations of Dynamic Networks (SAND 2025)

Abstract
We study the Temporal Dominating Set problem, in which one asks whether a temporal graph 𝒢 = (G₁,… , G_T) given as a sequence of snapshot graphs, over the same vertex set V, has a set S of temporal vertices of size at most k such that each vertex v of V is dominated by some w ∈ S in the snapshot that contains w. Additionally, we consider Temporal Partial Dominating Set, where one asks whether at least t (and not necessarily all) vertices of V can be dominated by S and a further generalization in which the solution may only contain a bounded number of temporal vertices from each snapshot. We analyze how the complexity of Temporal (Partial) Dominating Set is influenced by the maximum snapshot degree and the structure of the underlying graph, the graph with vertex set V and whose edge set is the union of all snapshot edge sets. For example, we obtain a complexity dichotomy for the maximum snapshot degree and we show that Temporal Partial Dominating Set is fixed-parameter tractable for tw+Δ, where tw and Δ denote the treewidth and the maximum degree of the underlying graph of 𝒢, respectively. We also show which of our results transfer to the well-studied Temporal Vertex Cover problem. For example, we show that Temporal Vertex Cover is also fixed-parameter tractable for tw+Δ which substantially extends the previously known polynomial-time algorithms for the case that the underlying graph is a path or cycle.

Bandwidth Parameterized by Cluster Vertex Deletion Number

Abstract
Given a graph G and an integer b, Bandwidth asks whether there exists a bijection π from V(G) to {1, …, |V(G)|} such that max_{{u, v} ∈ E(G)} | π(u) - π(v) | ≤ b. This is a classical NP-complete problem, known to remain NP-complete even on very restricted classes of graphs, such as trees of maximum degree 3 and caterpillars of hair length 3. In the realm of parameterized complexity, these results imply that the problem remains NP-hard on graphs of bounded pathwidth, while it is additionally known to be W[1]-hard when parameterized by the treedepth of the input graph. In contrast, the problem does become FPT when parameterized by the vertex cover number of the input graph. In this paper, we make progress towards the parameterized (in)tractability of Bandwidth. We first show that it is FPT when parameterized by the cluster vertex deletion number cvd plus the clique number ω of the input graph, thus generalizing the previously mentioned result for vertex cover. On the other hand, we show that Bandwidth is W[1]-hard when parameterized only by cvd. Our results generalize some of the previous results and narrow some of the complexity gaps.

Extended MSO Model Checking via Small Vertex Integrity

Authors: Tatsuya Gima and Yota Otachi

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 248, 33rd International Symposium on Algorithms and Computation (ISAAC 2022)

Abstract
We study the model checking problem of an extended MSO with local and global cardinality constraints, called MSO^GL_Lin, introduced recently by Knop, Koutecký, Masařík, and Toufar [Log. Methods Comput. Sci., 15(4), 2019]. We show that the problem is fixed-parameter tractable parameterized by vertex integrity, where vertex integrity is a graph parameter standing between vertex cover number and treedepth. Our result thus narrows the gap between the fixed-parameter tractability parameterized by vertex cover number and the W[1]-hardness parameterized by treedepth.

Algorithmic Meta-Theorems for Combinatorial Reconfiguration Revisited

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 244, 30th Annual European Symposium on Algorithms (ESA 2022)

Abstract
Given a graph and two vertex sets satisfying a certain feasibility condition, a reconfiguration problem asks whether we can reach one vertex set from the other by repeating prescribed modification steps while maintaining feasibility. In this setting, Mouawad et al. [IPEC 2014] presented an algorithmic meta-theorem for reconfiguration problems that says if the feasibility can be expressed in monadic second-order logic (MSO), then the problem is fixed-parameter tractable parameterized by treewidth + 𝓁, where 𝓁 is the number of steps allowed to reach the target set. On the other hand, it is shown by Wrochna [J. Comput. Syst. Sci. 2018] that if 𝓁 is not part of the parameter, then the problem is PSPACE-complete even on graphs of bounded bandwidth. In this paper, we present the first algorithmic meta-theorems for the case where 𝓁 is not part of the parameter, using some structural graph parameters incomparable with bandwidth. We show that if the feasibility is defined in MSO, then the reconfiguration problem under the so-called token jumping rule is fixed-parameter tractable parameterized by neighborhood diversity. We also show that the problem is fixed-parameter tractable parameterized by treedepth + k, where k is the size of sets being transformed. We finally complement the positive result for treedepth by showing that the problem is PSPACE-complete on forests of depth 3.
